Found my issue by looking at the Chrome console. The entities endpoint was failing because my invite URL had an emoji in it. The returned field verification JSON didn't provide any warning on the webpage.

I resolved the issue by encoding the field with the javascript function: encodeURIComponent('mycustominviteurl') then copying that result into the form.
