while I do vouch for toki pona to be added, keep in mind (and Azerty will probably tell you this as well) that there are currently more than 200 000 words to translate

I came here around October 2024, when the progress was somewhere around 24%. The work was quite big. But now we have finally completed the translation into Belarusian by 100%. The localisation builder has been quite unkind since February, refusing to update our progress. But I hope @red niche will set everything up this time, and we will be able to announce to our circles with a clear conscience about the full addition of Belarusian to the game
Ye the build system is not really set up well for translation progress, but I'll update this as soon as I can - great work tho!
As an Arabic speaker, that would be great. I’m not very good with Arabic so maybe it could teach me more.

Rewards were semi-automated to filter some malicious actors, who translates through google translator or something, and some who just suggest random spam. As of the localization build, it was intended to be everyday if I recall correctly

You need to reach at least 50% of the AllGameText file. Then the language will be added to both versions as "in development"
Well, you need to warn about the achievement of 50%. It's not the automatic part
its def not meant to do that, and it is automated with the caveat of the build number being manual
tho, adding new languages is a manual process and that is sadly shared between all branches, rework soon(tm)

I'll get it sorted in the morning. It's sort of a special builder so I am weary of just adding another of our build machines to that pool, don't think any other machine has that setup
We have build setup changes inc so this will improve, together with better configs so we can have all languages in the build too, but rn it's sad

how do you guys deal with people randomly coming into crowdin, completely ignoring the established terminology, and adding random questionable "translations" with broken grammar?
this is pretty much why have a one month delay so that each languages proofreader have time to sort things like that out
or people who just use ai to translate
i am struggling to understand if even AI could translate "defend doretta" as "defeat doretta" 😄

almost all languages leave it or transcribe it, greek goes with "leather pants", but i wish i could speak bulgarian to experience the rest of the game with this 😄
I think you should talk to either the language proofreader, or if you don't know who that is then @shell vine or in that language discord channel here

As for Serbian, as far as I know, we don't have a proofreader (yet), but you should definitely downvote translations you feel are not appropriate.
If you notice some extra amount of bad-ness, please tell us here and we can take action.

We did have some instances of people genuinly trying to help but not aware of the existence of a structure.

This is about Rogue Core.
Falconeer is confirmed female. Unless devs will decide to make separate voicelines for Falconeer and any future female characters, it may complicate translating.
Polish is very gendered language. It wasn't a problem for DRG, because even though all dwarves share one voiceline set, they all are males. If that would remain the same for Rogue Core, we might have to change the voicelines to be genderless or Falconeer would just refer herself as male, lmao.
I would like to take this opportunity to suggest some syntax for this. The same string could contain something like this without having to be separate strings:
I can see {male="him", female="her"}!
Especially, because I've run into a similar problem with DRG whenever Mission Control says ‘you’ – whether this is singular or plural is ambiguous in English, but not in lots of other languages, and we've bad to compromise by always making it plural, therefore making it incorrect for when there's only one dwarf in a cave. The same problem could be solved in the same way.

Percentage wise there are more women involved in making the game than in the reclaimers....

The DEI nonsense got so bad that there is now the peril of having a contrary reaction (the pendulum swinging, blah blah). The mere presence of a female character in a game isn't a problem — what would be so would be things like lecturing men for the "inherent evil of maleness" and other crap like that.
It stands to reason it should; shifting voice pitches isn't enough to make a "male" voiceline sound properly female.
With both above points said, we do need to remember that: a) these are Dwarfs, not Humans; b) there is considerable lore (in fantasy in general, not just Tolkien and WarHammer) regarding the Dwarfes' phenotypes. GSG should honor that lore OR have the DRG lore well defined, so as any change (*) will be consistent with that expectation.
(*) Any perceived change going from DRG to RC.
Nobody has said they have to abide to any phenotypes created by lore from previous fantasy entries. In all account, they've already made their own, with dwarves being sizeable taller than the average "fantasy dwarf".
They don't have to "honor" anything, nor is there a need for "well defined" lore.
The only existing expectation is the one people created for themselves, but that's not on GSG, that's on the person.
It's not complicated nor hard: they wanted to make female dwarf for a long time but didn't have the opportunity with DRG (because it's simply too late to be a task that can be done without a tremendous amount of work).
Rogue Core was the perfect opportunity for it, however.
That's perfectly well and good. The only thing to consider is that some expectations need to be heeded (either honored OR making it clear what the differences are and why). 👍
I simply thought the crew in DRG being male only was just easier to implement. One VA to make one set of voicelines shared among all dwarves and just changed in pitch is clever and surely much faster and easier to maintain. Thats why I brought this topic up in the first place, so new voicelines will be easy to maintain by translators as well.

and to some degree we depend on you all to let us know the quirks of your languages, since we only speak a handful of languages in house (and even then it's hard to predict how things translate. I never think how things will sound in Swedish for example.) So telling us these things and being proactive, especially now while we are implementing new things, will help the game be better

Anyhoo: serious question for the development of RC: we have one confirmed female (the falconeer). Are there plans or is there hope to add more female characters for any classes? Translators can make shortcuts if they know only at most one member of the team will be a dwarfette, but that goes out the window the instant there are two.

Even though crowdin project is still far from coming, translator may already make a run down the current database and see what their language need to adjust
I think it's safe to assume there will be more, especially since "Adding a new character" will be a viable new content update for us in the entire of RCs lifecycle

Random comment that's kind off off-topic in the ‘gendered’ sense, but not the ‘language quirks’ sense. Since you've mentioned RC translation is in a planning phase, I thought it would be best to say this now, since it was an issue in DRG and still mostly remains one to this day.
Please make sure whenever a ‘current/total’ counter is displayed, that it is a translatable string, so that I can go in and reverse it for Hungarian. For us, ‘total/current’ is more intuitive from a syntax sense.

Jenny destroyed the server it was building on because it was a slacker. I guess she had no time for a temporary solution since then #babelfish-lounge message
Yeap, soo the machine that was doing those builds (a bit of a special setup unrelated to translations) just died. We are doing a proper fix after summer vacation and quite swamped until then (also the latest translation build incorrectly got tagged/assigned the upcoming summer event patch, so you still can't coop on it)
All the combined hacks for years are starting to show on the build system hence why we are doing a proper setup, and something that will also be future proof for RC
The new mods stuff is still untranslatable...
And the promised push is still not there…

To play with people on the regular live branch, they must have the same game version. The incorrect gameversion, the patch that went live today, was built and pushed by that machine, so users on the latest translation branch was unable to play with live players for a while
but the patch is live now so its "resolved"

Hey, not sure if this affects anyone else's local version of the game... but the Italian one has most of the text under the seasonal event untranslated. Since all of the occurrences of that text on Crowdin appear to have been translated, I'm assuming this might be due to absent strings. How to fix this?
UPDATE: The same applies to seasonal assignments and the related text on the Assignment Board.
The same in Belarusian. When I saw the announcement of the event I was like: Wow, I need to run to the Crowdin website to translate the new lines! I go there, and nothing has been added and no one is translating any new lines. No one complained here (and this is the first event for which we had the rest of the translation done), and so I thought in our Belarusian way: "Maybe this is how it should be?"

Hello, the localisation for RC is not yet set up (the prototype is evolving too fast for localisation to make sense right now) but should be launched in the coming months.
RC will follow the same method as DRG for the translation and will be uploaded to crowdin when the time is right.

UHM unsure, the guy doing it had to prioritize some other build things and external deadlines, we will try a new special setup for Rogue core internally and if that turns out nice we'll backport to DRG soon(tm) 
So, until then, we'll all only be receiving our events in English? Tragedy, tragedy!
By the way, what do we need to do to remove the "This language is a work-in-progress" marker? I understand this is when the language is officially added as supported, but what are the requirements? All Belarusian files are fully translated, except for the "PatchNotes.po" file, which contains manually translated all the patch names and all season path notes (which accounts for 33% of the file)
Nothing, that's on us to mark. But we haven't done it in a while since our plans for the new system involves automating it

We have been investigating/testing out an entirely new build system and it's looking very promising, but that also meant we deprioritized making new builds in the old system for RC, but will instead be made in the new system

Even if i think this won't happen i'd like to have the attention of the developers of DRG, I wanna say that i'm grateful that you still take care of deep rock galactic, even if you have 2 more games to handle you still take care of it, and I appreciate that, but i gotta tell you that one of your latest updates is not good at all, in the Italian translation of the game, more or less everything changed, and it sound bad, really bad, i know that you use all of your effort and also you use your budget to make the experience of game absolutely pleasing, but i beg you to put the original italian translation back please, now it is very more confusing and certain adaptations sound so bad, thank you for you effort and your time, have a good day

Again long gaming night ahead with 2 friends I lured to this game. Havent had time to translate yet 🙂 :). We played over 16 hours the first time, then maybe 10 last night and evening. Now probably little less

Hey, I'd like to raise attention about holiday event lines.
Most of them are practically the same every year, yet they still need to be checked by people to keep the consistency in localization. Although I remember one situation where we made all the translation long before upcoming event (Lunar Year or Easter), but all the lines were still in english for the entire event, never to be seen again.
This creates unnecessary clutter in crowdin base. I just checked and see 16 pages of new lines, part of it is from past few events, which will never be displayed again, yet they still need to be translated/approved to clean up "untranslated" list.
To avoid clutter and breaking the neat localization in game, maybe a list of lines used every year would help.
What language version are you talking about? When I search for "holiday" in the Italian one, I only get 4 pages of strings... far less than 16
Also, if I remember correctly, the yearly iterations of those strings aren't exactly identical from year to year, they differ slightly by the names of the cosmetics, so even if they're mostly a copypasta, they're not 100% the same every year

What I meant was they were a part of 16 pages of untranslated lines in general. What I meant these duplicates make a little clutter on list.
Not all are identical obviously, but there still are duplicates like "earn 2x performance points", summer fest assignment description, etc. The changes usually are small like "Lunar [Animal]" or just a year number. There are lines with variables like enemies which then are translated separately. Same with mineral market and its randomized news. So maybe there could be done something similar for holiday lines.
I'll add the recurring event string management to the list of potential things to implement for the Devs.

Yep, this is good feedback. I think the problem is that the easiest and most efficient way to both implement new events and keep track of old event in the game files is to do it in this way that duplicated the files and strings, and it wasn't considered that it would break have an affect on localization. Since it's more of a policy shift to do it a different way with tradeoffs, rather than a feature or a fix, no promises but I'll start a discussion internally how can remove or at least minimize crowdin annoyances and risks

I think those are just generic names to cave elements found in different spots, from the context you can see some have "ceiling", other have "walls" or "floor"
E.g. when I had to translate the various occurrences of Common Rock, I noticed they are relative to different biomes, and keeping in mind they pretty much only appear in game when you highlight them with your laser pointer, I tried to add more variety and depth by using terminology referring to actual rock types that can be found in similar environments on earth...the end result improves the immersion, the "work feel" of it all and sounds less like placeholder names

Sure thing! I think they aren't that inconvenient like duplicated lines. They're gray and put behind untranslated tagged lines, so they won't really get into way, they just bloat the numbers. But it's always better to let you know 
The grey lines should be "hidden" and only accessible to proofreaders and above

Speaking of, I'm not sure if this will help anyhow, but I feel like Oswald for standard and Tektur for militaristic are quite similar to the original ones and might be a good fallback for Cyrillic. But they both use "SIL Open Font License" and may need some extra care with distributing its license info

People generally have the choice between dark and light modes nowadays (though stuff being light-mode-only is still actually more common)
I vastly prefer coloured backgrounds, to either, though
didn't really think about vcolor modes on crowdin, but usually I stay with light mode on pages with tons of text - many times white text on dark background were straining my eyes
Mostly because translating the game is a lot of work (a lot) and the Devs prefer to make the game than translate it.
A couple tried their hand at it though.
But maybe we'll get a few translators for Danish and it will get localized eventually
The studio is Danish, yes.
But most of the player base has an understanding of English.
If you produce a game only in Danish, the amount of potential players is very small (only the world population that speaks Danish).
English allows you to target most of the world straight away.
The studio did not translate the game in any language, it was all done by volunteers.
This is the norm you mean.
Most small indie games are released in English. It simply is, for small and/or indie studios, a bad business decision to publish a game in anything other than English (unless you also have English available).
And if you do translate it, choose the most spoken languages next : Spanish, Hindi, Mandarin, etc.
The business goal of a translation is to broaden the target audience.
As for GSG and DRG specifically, when the game started, the six people behind it did not have the role to translate it or the money to hire a translation agency.
What they did instead was buy the tools for volunteers to do it they wanted and this is what we have been doing so far.
And again, all the translations that were done were done by volunteers from the community.
We have not had any Danish volunteers stay for more than a little while.
That said, if you want to give it a try, you will find the link to the translation platform in the pinned messages. After all, how better to have the game in Danish than translating it yourself ?

Welcome! New translations generally get in every game update. You can submit several different translations for the same string and upvote/downvote them. The one with the highest amount of points gets in. Of course, if there's only one translation for a string, then it will get in regardless of rating. Verification overrides the rating system so that one translation can be fixed in place, but isn't required.

Hold your horses is an expression from some English languages.
"Hold your horses" is to stop someone from jumping into action usually based on partial context or without taking risks into consider.
While "hold onto your potatoes" means "hold on tight" when the situation is going to get rough

I was also wondering why, as I recently tried Linux for gaming and, in general, I had better performance in practically all the games I play, whether through Proton or not, and better stability.
The most noticeable was Minecraft, where I went from 100-150 fps directly to 1000 fps in vanilla, and 500-600 in heavy modpacks.
on other games i have a +50 to +200 fps boost. DRG was 80-100 on windows and 170-190 on linux
The Unreal Engine is an Epic product, and Epic is not really "in favor" of linux gaming, so there are probably no direct build options for Linux ?
You do have a good point, but I can't answer your question because I'm not familiar with that. As long as it works with Proton, that's great, because Proton, in most cases, is already better than running on Windows XD.

That is another problem that comes standard with any “clean” Windows installation. But yes, I am aware of that.
Unfortunately, I've had enough headaches to the point i just learn how to modify the OS, create scripts, and tinker with critical areas so that it only does what I want it to do and removes what I don't care about. But even so, it can be slower. More stable, functional, and without bloatware/telemetry/inconveniences, but the overall performance is worse.
Windows 11 still manages to be even worse with the number of bugs that come with each new update and the fact that part of the code is done with AI. With each update, there is always something that gets broken.
W10 will be my last windows pc ^^

I found out something quite funny recently: As far as I can tell, you can only get Unreal Editor from the Epic Games Store on Windows… Well, when I tried modding the game on Linux, I saw that EGS does not actually support it, and they just have a standalone Unreal Editor there.
They can't even be arsed to force their launcher on me!

I tried running EGS through Wine before finding out about the standalone install, but why even, when I can just run that?
Oh, but I had to compile Unreal Editor 4.27 from source, since they only host libraries for 5.x nowadays, lmao

AFAIK, user configuration is generally stored under ~/.config
I'm lazy, so I'd like to keep a copy of important folders and configuration files on an efficient disk, so that when I reinstall a computer, I only have to copy the folders back to their respective places and all the program settings are as they were before.
I do something similar in Windows with the FreeFileSync program, which is good for managing this efficiently. I would like to do something similar in Linux as well.

FYI, every file and directory whose name starts with a . is supposed to be ‘hidden’ and you generally don't have to interact with or worry about them, unless you're looking to change a specific configuration or something
You can disable the display of hidden files and directories to reduce visual clutter – you can still type their paths directly in the address bar
And yeah, Steam's quirky file management is on them lol
Or it could be that they just wanted to have shortcuts in their own folders that redirect to more standard system libraries down the line

The next step I'm trying to take is to make that “DISCO 2” folder a kind of mountable device (as if it were a separate partition) or a btrfs subvolume.
I'm also trying to understand how btrfs subvolumes work because I want some specific folders to be subvolumes and I don't want to create backups of them with snapper. Basically, some exclusions. I tried to do it with timeshift, but it seemed like some features were missing. I learned about snapper when I tried Fedora, and everything worked perfectly. Now, on Nobara, I want to replicate the same thing.

Greetings, I'm the proofreader for the Italian version of DRG, pleasure to meet you 🙂
I took up DRG a bit more than a year ago, been playing it ever since, and I also started pretty much right away a deep revamp of its localization, mostly due to the fact that I was a professional translator years ago (early 2000s, in fact, before I joined the navy) and couldn't help feeling awkward at how amateurish the Italian translation looked, littered as it was with typoes, outright wrong grammar, inconsistencies and generally how entire texts reeked of Google Translate (not to mention the TONS of pop culture references that had simply gone lost in the process).
I was burdened by the feeling such a translation didn't do the game much justice, so I took it upon myself and went through the whole of it in order to grant a localization that was worthy of it, which I've been at on a daily basis ever since, basically (2600 hours in the game so far, 500 of which actually playing, so the rest, roughly 2100 hours, went into revising/doing research/translating).
I'm more than ready to answer for every single translation choice that I've made (indeed I'm even extremely curious to know what you mean specifically, aside from the example you provided), and if you prefer to discuss this in Italian, please feel free to PM me anytime (as I don't think people here could get the Italian language-specific subtleties therein, anyway) 😉
(Personally, as a language nerd, I would be interested, but no pressure – I don't want to unnecessarily burden you with translating those subtleties to English.)

It's a nice thing we still can see translations from similar sounding lines even if they're hidden/moved. Easier to copy-paste and adjust than rewrite whole thing. Not saying about even remembering what was there previously.
It's called Translation Memory (TM) and good locplatforms (as Crowdin) have that feature. Also you can adjust persentage (%) of similarity.

Now, he says that maybe/probably only the devs can, but I wanted to know if it's really the case or if it's somehow possible (maybe it needs someone with a bit more power, Idk).

That's the basic idea. The export gets everything including quite a lot of info not publicly visible.

I swear this is just to get the perfect mental picture of how roughly it works: let's say you extract it. Is it like when you pull from GitHub (so you get all the classic files, the folders and the subfolders)? *If yes, then couldn't you just ignore the rest, zip the "Italian" folder and that's it? Or does the folder that I'm interested in also contains private stuff (so aside from the "Steam" and "Store Pages" folders and the 3 extra files, you have a bunch of (or maybe just 1, Idk) private files)? If yes, then I guess it would make sense and I'm fine with the denial.
*If not, then I'd imagine it would be an utterly mess with all files completely unorganized and (maybe) unintelligible and just with that, I could absolutely understand.
