OK, thanks. Really quick one for DE: In on-site refinery missions when you build the pipes and extend too far to build a single piece, there's a string that probably just says "too long" in english. In german, it's translated as "Zu lange" which out of context wouldn't be a wrong translation but in context should be "Zu lang" because "Zu lange" is usually just used to refer to stretches of time ("This would take too long" = "Das würde zu lange dauern") but not to the physical dimensions of an object.

What you might see are scrapped content strings, which DRG Historian has probably already covered in a video.

Technical question: what are the margins for translated string length? As in: how much larger can my translation be in comparison to the original?

It really depends on the strings. Some strings are in containers that are dynamic, some are fixed. You would have to check in-game and see if it works for your language. The only thing I can recommend is trying to keep the same character length, but not super strictly. Then later check if it looks good, once it has been updated.

So I've noticed that certain languages like to change capitalization in words or entire sentences - in the game Sometimes Entire Sentences Look Like This, each word is capitalized. I don't know whether this should actually be changed or not, and probably certain languages are more okay than others with using the same, just please, try to make this consistent in the language you're translating, look at other, similar strings to see if it matches.

Pologne, and here generally I see people making it non-capital, but some people don't follow that (probably because we don't have a good way to communicate with each other) and it makes me have to just revisit old, already translated strings to correct people's mistakes (maybe we should make separate threads for each language in this channel?). And also, Polish afaik doesn't really have a rule for that either so that could be another source of confusion, should we stick to the sauce material or make it have more sense?

There's never enough to improve. You can overlook old stuff easily, or translate technically correct but unfitting for a certain point in game, make errors, don't stick to terms (f.i. translating machine events different in different places) and on and on

Big languages have more than 5 (regular) translators

Spanish, French, German and others

Or people who translate lots of stuff good enough quickly and then the nitpickers who improve the quality. It helps a lot to correct or go over existing translations, so every kind of translation helps.

Translating puns is always fun for everyone involved.

I think a lot of the point of any kind of translation is to try and stay true to the original intention. If not possible - there The Troubles begin, with books you can use bibliography, but in translation like this, either keep the original or invent something yourself, which might leave the original intention

One example of this is the poisson (a fish in french) - poison joke in Feet of Clay by Terry Pratchett, in the original that works great but in a language that has a completely different word for poison you gotta hope the readers can just understand the original joke

mission and assignment and one more word all had the same translation in my language

For German we try to translate/localize most words to plain German or their German equivalent.

If that's not possible or would sound weird we go with the English word or a term sounding very similar to the English original.

We try to not be lazy but also not to bend or force something.

Either way the translation should sound natural in your language and should be coherent with the existing translation. That's the goal.

Some phrases like perks are so common in all games, it feels odd (to me) to translate them to fitting words which you never used before or are rare in your language. We did translate season (Saison) for instance, I still feel odd about that one. Artificial so to speak? It's a subjective line.

The only things that have been requested not to be translated are the name of the game and its abbreviations, the name of the company (GSG) and the names in the credits.
And if you use a different alphabet, those are negociable.
All in-game text, rock and stone, beer names, etc. Are fair game.
Some translation teams chose to keep them as the original version, but the consensus is to make it as natural as you can, for your language.

If you use a different alphabet than the latin one, you may request to translate those anyway, but it needs approval from GSG before being uploaded (for example, Chinese has a localized version of Deep Rock Galactic)

Translating away on your own is not really viable IMHO, as you need to be on the same page with your team. Plus GSG gives us some inputs and feedback here on discord which helps a lot. 🙂
