Well with the lack of an updated roadmap, EA scheduled for Q4 of this year is kinda hard to believe with CA4 coming end of the month or October, that would give them very little time in between the end of the alpha and the Holiday season to address Alpha 4 feedback and release an EA that's stable enough for them to go on Christmas break without having to worry about potential major bugs, but the Roadmap is in need of an update seeing it indicated DRG Survivor 1.0 still TBD and it's next week

It would explain why DRG’s primary operations on Hoxxes IV revolve around extracting various forms of Morkite. Because even though it isn’t as pure and powerful as Expenite…well it’s still a wonder material, just one that needs a bit more work.

It also has explains why the Morkite seeds look like Expenite. The season 5 briefing says that all DRG operations are for the purpose of extracting Morkite in either liquid or crystal form, but R and D theorizes that both solid and liquid forms come from an ‘ancestor’. That leads to them finding the Morkite seeds that they want so that they can find a way to synthesize Morkite for cheaper than sending dwarves with expensive guns and ammo to die. This search for how Morkite forms draws them deeper to planet, and that’s when they find Expenite.

heres how melee feels to me: in its base form, its useful for the basic enemies that are the grunt replacements, but obviously falls short with harder enemies. get some upgrades in you and it gets much better IMO

for now melee is best on slicer, but only because the melee bio-boosters are exclusive to him

hes not the best option for melee combat because his ability serves well to boosting and hooking onto upgrades that do things on melee hits/kills, its mainly because he's given all the melee energy drinks

What I mean by that is the following :

If I'm to pull out an example of a roguelite FPS with actual melee combat working decently well, I'm just gonna use Roboquest (because it's an amazing game and I actually have experience with it). Despite being a shooter first and foremost, melee gameplay works because of a few things.

  • It's a solo game at heart, and even in co-op there is no friendly fire/damage blocked by friendlies so no co-op friction.
  • The game is very fast paced, which gives you all the movement and speed you need to get to melee with enemies before they have a chance to shoot you down. DRG/RC is obviously quite different in that regard since enemies are mostly melee, but...
  • All flying enemies don't have erratic movement and are always in reach, thanks to all the movement option. DRG and RC don't have that luxury of giving you insane movement (you can get some movement option, but it's never gonna feel like you're that agile) and ranged enemies have erratic movement, are fast and are likely to stick to walls and ceilings, which can be very high, making melee weapons an even less appealing option
  • All melee attacks in DRG have somewhat a long range still, to allow for multiple melee enemies to strike you at once, to make swarms of enemies actually dangerous. This makes melee extremely hard to pull off without being slapped around at every occasion. Rogue Core can somewhat alleviate that due to upgrades and meta-upgrades, but that means you can't really start with a melee weapon and hope to do well in a run (don't forget ranged enemies still exist tooĂ

Even if they were to change some of these things, it means all weapons are gonna need some AoE component to even have a chance to perform decently well, and at this point it's just the energy blade of Slicer but without a cooldown (and less damage, I imagine).

DRG is pretty much shot and run, the idea of melee is that you stay on the place or otherwise have a lot of mobility and you risk to take a lot of damage. IDK how rogue would go, but if it's the same it's hard to make a system that let's you stay close range with enemies without putting your life on it. It should need quick time events or smt crazy like that to make skill-full and less risky without breaking the multiplayer dynamics.
Also because DRG is designed more around cooperation, making something similar to a tank breaks the balance power or dynamics between players making some roles more important than others.

the only thing i can think of is charge melee attack powers and deal increased damage once in a while and replace the empowered attacks with that but with more damage, lower cooldown and the need to be charged

To be clear, this was not even remotely a complaint. I just personally think the style of a mission is different enough that it will trip up quite a few folks coming from DRG. In DRG, it's fairly common to do everything in a mission before extracting. In RC, you won't always (often?) be able to. And attempting to is going to lead to a lot dying and failed missions in the early days as the community as a whole adjusts to the roguelite style of RC. Again - I do not think this is a bad thing. Just different.

you have all these various ways of improving your character in theory but it barely makes you feel stronger in the end. from my experience, the average power scaling throughout a run was kinda negligible? i never felt significantly stronger than i do in deep rock. and that's not to say i wasn't dealing more damage, but it feels essentially the exact same to me

and from what i'm inferring from information about the new update, they arent really improving the game in the directions i'd like it to go. just recently the devs revealed that there are now "100 new perks", but they're still all just stat changes, and the more involved perks are being relegated to a seperate system. i think this kinda dillutes the game with too many systems.

okay, so honestly as i've said too many times by now, there is a crazy amount of upgrades which just directly / conditionally change your stats. this is normal in a roguelite, but here... they're not really counterbalanced by anything of substance. sure, there are some things that attempt to be more mechanically interesting, but they fall flat because they don't really have any juice or they're kind of negligible or small bonuses.

your gun looks the same the whole run, your character looks the same the whole run, your bullets look the same the whole run. all that changes are the damage popups and maybe spawning red sugar when you hit an enemy. that's all that i can really feel by the end of the run.

sure, you could say that conditionally increasing your damage when doing specific actions kinda adds depth and strategy, but it's just not fun when it's essentially all the game is.

sure, you could say that inflicting cold to enemies near you is "different" from that, but this is about as inventive as anything here gets.

Let's look at the rarest items in the game: ALL of them just change your stats. gold ones, artifacts, purple ones. the three rarest tiers do nothing but make you deal more damage directly.

but this isnt even the end of the world - i think this would be fine if the damage were obscured behind some cool effects - look at risk of rain 2, it technically has like 15 items that basically just increase your damage, but they're masked behind being rockets, bombs you attach to enemies, lava pillars you spawn and more. it's at least visually appealing. it trades mechanical depth and strategy for spectacle, and people LOVE it for the spectacle. but in this game you kinda get neither honestly.

Some of that criticism here is cosmetics - which is up to everyone's taste (most roguelite don't have the style of Risk of Rain 2, which you seem to be comparing RC with a lot from what I can read).

It also has just basic stat upgrades, but it also has upgrades that buff certain actions, like running, your melee attacks, healing, just about everything you can interact with.

I think perhaps you overestimate where the game is in development that those elements should be a high priority to attract players.

Alpha and initial early access builds aren't really the time to attract people, unless you're desperate for money, because the game isn't ready for most players. It's in a playable state, technically, but a lot of what will make the game really feel unique is in the polish. This is the stage of the game where the priority is building the framework that holds up the rest of the experience.

Flashier gun effects aren't really a going to be better for the game that an actual UI or progression system

you need to have at least gold promo's for all 4 dwarves in regular DRG, then you have to order 500 beers (any kind, except a leaflover resets the counter to 0). After this you'll have to break Lloyd's highscore in Jetty Boot. This will grant you a beta key. Good luck Miner!
