If the devs want to discourage players from wandering off alone, they could make something that latches onto you like a tick, that slowly drains your HP, and can only be removed by a teammate. It wouldn't completely incapacitate the player or disrupt the game’s pacing, since the affected player would still be mobile and just need to reach their team’s line of sight for help. guntouchables already does this

What about a glob of flesh spawns at a corner of the cave (like a cave leech) and when a player approaches it shots a highly accurate projectile that infects you with the tick.

That's why cave leeches work. Because Cave Leeches' biggest weakness, is simply being aware they might exist.

I'm not famililar with guntouchables, but from an outsider looking in on RC. I don't really see the big issue with Cave Leeches. The leeches are easily countered by the player. You only really get caught off guard if you

1. Wander off alone.

2. Are not actively looking for them.

On top of that, a flare gun is probably the most effective counter to cave leeches as a whole.

If players really don't like cave leeches that much, you really can just play to counter them, instead of rushing

From my POV, you wouldn't really need to slow down (play carefully) if you clear the roof using a flare gun, or even your laser pointer sometimes

there's no acidspitter equivalent, expenite is neon glowing green and there's no other minerals/secondaries

and spotter darts can outline enemies

i don't feel very strongly about leeches either way tbh, maybe make them grab faster though

Also most leeches spawn because the team chose to take the cave leech cluster modifier, so people know it's a thing they have to keep in mind for the rest of the run. Sticking together, throwing flares towards the ceiling and listening for the hissing all gets the job done.

They're mostly just a threat when everyone else is downed. Rogue Core is not really a game where a single dwarf goes to the next cave on their own significantly earlier than everyone else. It's more of a "everything left is already being handled, may as well proceed, people will be behind me in 30s".

Visibility is generally good enough that I never really think "I wish we had a flare gun" whenever we don't have one. In DRG it happens plenty where you're a gunner or engineer and hear stuff spawn in the distance and wish you could see better in order to kill them efficiently as they appear. In RC, enemies spawn at glowy areas and they either have glowy bits or you can still see them well enough, so you don't get that "I wish we had a scout" feeling

i actually think visibility is terrible since all of the enemies are gray but it doesn't matter since 95% are melee

i just don't really like how similar creepers can look to players, but guardian being neon yellow helps that a little

maybe that's a class issue more than enemies
