Why is Rogue Core not an expansion?
Since the inception of Deep Rock Galactic seven years ago, we have had the feeling that the core gameplay would work just as well with the roguelike/lite formula. So we started a prototype project as a new gamemode inside DRG. As the prototype evolved, we realised that it had much more potential, and that this would be a great opportunity to return to that open development and Early Access mindset. Thus, it became clear that making it as a standalone spin-off would be the right choice for us.

In itself its just a gammode, they use the same engine and everything else can be imported in it, they could make it a separate gamemode but they wont because selling it as a new game makes money instead (be mad all you want but thats what gamedev is about)

Okay so basically, making a game different enough from the original means that there's little incentive to keep it within. Otherwise you get too many content that is superfluous for the other parts of the game.
This increases efficiency as it also means they can make concrete engine tweaks that target only either game.
Imagine Doom Eternal. Why didn't they just make that a DLC for Doom 2016?

Just be assured. Developres with good planning (such as GSG) can very reliably work on more than one project at once. They wouldn't have gotten this far to show a trailer if it wasn't the case.

We are not dropping DRG. Season 5 has been in progress while we started working on RC and we quickly came to the conclusion that there was no way we could just run them side by side.

This timelime is the one we think will result in both a good start for RC and a good Season 05. I'm bummed out about it myself. I was trying to find a way to sqeeze s05 in before we started on RC but then s06 would just get mega delayed and s05 would also have very little development time. We didn't want to do that.

DRG is NOT being replaced, this is project that requires different tools. If it WHERE just a different mode then DRG development would indeed need to halt.
They are reusing some code and systems they have already built but they are also building new systems from the ground up, in game development that requires a new project or an INSANE amount of recoding of the base game.
Nobody wants that. If you don’t wanna play Rouge core that’s okay you can keep playing DRG with little to no effect.
