Honestly it was a slow evolution. You could hear them edging that direction a little bit with every album they made, then they went on hiatus, and anyone who paid attention to the music that Patrick and Pete made during the hiatus was NOT surprised when FOB "changed their sound" coming back from hiatus

People really overexaggerate how different it is. So much of it is just in production.

Clarinet sucked with the high notes...always sounded like a squeal, never smooth. I honestly found clarinet much more difficult than oboe

And despite having a very similar mouthpiece, sax was WAY easier than clarinet

Someone I know used to play the bass as well for school (not bass guitar but they eventually moved onto that as well), their fingers would get hurt from the strings but they basically had a way to prevent it by cutting up those gel rubber pencil grips and putting them on their fingers.
