Tbh I don't think defense matters much. Summoner seems like a sort of 'challenge' class.
It's got a rough earlygame, it has somewhat obscure mechanics such as whipstacking, it's the only class where global i-frames matter, etc. I mean, look at Terraprisma, it's designed to be the best summon but it's locked behind what is probably the most difficult challenge in Terraria.

already had an issue like this since skeletron can technically be fought in hardmode, but I didn't want the rules to give me flexibility to ignore duke
took me a day and a half to come up with "I have to fight every boss in that stage before moving onto the next stage" (stages being pre-hm, hardmode ending at golem and "moon lord" stage being cultist and ML)
