I highly recommend using the Rod of Discord

to dodge the laser

and use a shield to prevent getting knocked about

When I am at a decent tier of armor, I go to the Dungeon to get the Cobalt Shielf

and also the Obsidian Key and such

You need to kill his head but the hands do more damage to you than you think and without his hands skeletron is pretty much a sitting duck
