Play normally. Some enemies will drop weird items named Mechanical Worm/Skull/Eye. Use those items at night to continue the game's progression. You can also craft them to fasten up the process (go to the guide with some souls of night or souls of light and use the crafting option)

Chloro bullet: 9 damage + homing on a boss which is hard to miss (+ may target the tentacles rather than damaging the boss)
Crystal bullet: 9 damage + on impact it splits into 2 shards which deal 50% damage - Crystal bullets deal absurd amounts of dps (the highest out of any bullet in the entire game)
But those are base stats: the shards that spilt into 2 are based on the final weapon damage (damage of the weapon + bullets + damage boosts, etc), making crystal bullets even more powerful
