I've been thinking of my own theory about the slimes.. the normal surface ones blue, green etc are neutral and don't out right target you, they do have an annoying habit of just hopping into you, but if you don't hit back they'll ignore you,

So my theory is that slimes are generally friendly, you could hug one and it probably won't mind,

But once you go underground the evil biomes corrupt their personality and they start to mutate, like how the jungle and ice have spiked versions,

While some are mutated other's evolve naturally like the mother slime, they evolve in darkness that's why they're so dark, the black slime is a fully grown baby slime,
