I did, it said to throw a lava bucket under the guide NPC but that didn't work for me

You must either lure the Guide to a lava pit, or easier, craft a bucket, fill it with lava , build a wall close around him (ideally leaving only two blocks for his sprite) and dumping the bucket of lava on him.
