One of the things I do is make sure I have the potions that I'm going to need in order to succeed, which include each of the following
Ironskin, Regeneration, Swiftness, Archery, Thorns, Endurance, Wrath, Rage, Heartreach, Lifeforce, Inferno, and Shine...
I use Shine Potions for bosses that can only be fought at night
I use Inferno Potions for bosses such as Eater of Worlds & Queen Bee to prevent being hit by projectiles
I use the Endurance, Wrath, and Rage Potions to reduce how much damage I take, and to increase how much damage I deal
Lastly, I use the Heartreach & Lifeforce Potions to help me reach healing hearts from far distances & increase my maximum life

What I did was I caught the quest fish and put it in my piggy bank and then caught another and put it in my piggy bank and did it again until I filled it
And then I put them in a chest
Cuz you can only hold 1 quest fish at a time
Give the angler the fish and then rename your character and you can give him another one
