yup, this seems just visual upgrades, new anims, new sounds... but the internals is more important.. people expect 'improvements' from a major update, from what i can see now this version is slightly more resource hungry than win 10, not sure if that is considered an improvement or not.
I hope the final stable version won't be like this.

I had a quadro NVS 290 and a PCI ethernet adapter from 2002 running in a PC that was using windows 10 early last year, is that sort of compatibility uncommon?

well microsoft has a very vast 'generic' driver repo which it install through windows update. I think if the hardware vendors wont release any updates for those deprecated hardwares, people will have no choice other than sticking with the ones provided my microsoft.

so far, Windows 11 doesn't cause issues with VMware/VBox's USB 3.1, serial port, disk drive, or other emulation, I think its going to be fine.

Windows Terminal being installed by default is suspicious. Maybe the larger changes are more focused on something that won't affect the average consumer.

You just grab the media creation tool from the link. Make sure you have a USB flash drive or similar device that's 8gb or larger with no files you care about on it. Follow the instructions the tool provides, choose your usb drive, and let it finish. Once that's all done, restart your laptop and boot into the USB drive instead of the current install of Windows. There must be other things taking up that storage you need. Are any large programs still installed? Check by heading to the programs and features option in control panel, rather than the "Add or Remove programs" option in Settings. Even with your own files gone, some may be taking up a lot of storage. Also, other user accounts under C:/Users is normal on a school laptop, you can try deleting the folders for some other users if they are present.

If you know how to use disk manager, I'd take the things you absolute don't want to reinstall and dump them into a small, second partition on your hard drive, have your install usb ready, wipe the old partition, and then install on the SSD
