It's a mod that can be rerolled to give different stat bonuses

I.E. spending Kuva on it can change its stats

They can significantly increase the effectiveness of a weapon

Or do very little, depending on the weapon's Riven Disposition, which is a stat that adjusts how powerful a riven's stats are for that weapon

For example, a weapon with a .5× riven disposition will only get half of the stats of a weapon with a 1× disposition from the same riven

Primes usually have lower dispositions than their regular counterparts (or any other variants of a weapon like MK1/Vandal/Wraith, etcetera), but all variants of a weapon can use the same riven. A braton or MK1-braton can use the same riven mod a braton prime can and vise versa.

If you're lucky you can make insane amounts of plat from rivens

when you hover over planets on the star chart, you should be able to see which resources that planet drops in the bottom right

at some point you can make extractors

but this was before the change where you could carry every key, and also before the change where they reduced how much each key costs from 3 coordinates to 1 coordinate
so for 5 months i was farming 3 coordinates per key to fight mutalist alad v and got helmet and chassis within a week, and then he never dropped mesa systems for the entire rest of that time period
