Hey so after I finish college I want to move to Germany- I'm a trans woman and I naturally have a lot of considerations. I have an in to the EU (I can claim Polish citizenship by descent) so that won't be a particular issue for me.

Where is a good, inexpensive place to live that is going to be open to my existence and that I can find a job in (I want to either be a history teacher or an English teacher, haven't quite decided yet)? Berlin seems to be increasing in cost, a lot of the west seems incredibly expensive, and I've heard about multiple neo-Nazi marches in Saxony- none of that seems particularly good for me.

If I start HRT in the USA, will I be able to immediately resume it when I move to Germany or will I have to start the process over again?

If I legally change my name/gender markers in the USA will that transfer over to Germany?

Any other considerations I should keep in mind?

#

can someone help me choose a room for college

#

I have a few options. Price is a significant factor so if thez are all similar quality, I'd just go with the cheapest. Yeah so basically how is Tilsiter vs kaiserlauterer vs carl duisberg vs waldhausweg vs Guckelsberg? Naturally I cant get any information on the "vibe" or "atmosphere" of the district. I guess in the city or anywhere aesthetic would be nice but not a priority.

Is space really that important as a student? (if any past students could offer advice). I dont have much stuff so I'm happy to go with the cheaper option unless theres some reason that in Germany it woudl be better to have a bigger one.

I dont particularly like shared bathrooms but again not a problem if its cheaper. One of my top priorities is also being able to make new friends and practice my German, so I actually DON'T want to live in an "international" apartment where everyone will just speak english.

Here are the rooms:

Single room14m² in Tilsiter Straße (305€)
Single room 23m² in Tilsiter Straße (345€)
Single room 13m² in Kaiserslauterer Straße (280€)
Single room 15m² in Kaiserslauterer Straße (290€)
Single room 21m² in Kaiserslauterer Straße (310€)
Place in a double room (40m²) in Kaiserslauterer Str. (230€)
Single room 15m² in Carl Duisberg Haus (305€)
Apartment 16m² in the dormitory Waldhausweg (299€)
Einzelzimmer 9m² in the dormitory Guckelsberg (206€)

I got a binding job offer to work at a company in Bremen, and both I and them are being buffeted by all the classic German red tape that surrounds this process

#

I live in NY and the embassy has no available appointments for applying for a work visa. Their site only lists "appointments" (just an empty list for every single month) up until October, but then it doesn't go any further than that

#

So trying to stay positive, is there any possibility of getting a work visa (long term stay) besides that? I will email them today so I can hear something back on Monday but it's not looking great right now

#

I would move over ASAP once I get my contract but they can't legally send me one until they're done with their bureaucratic dance with a bunch of agencies, and I need to get this visa without prolonging this

exotic barn
#

Ok, while I filled out some other forms and ordered some necessary documents, I also learned that apparently the consulate site adds new appointment dates at exactly 12AM in Germany. wish me luck idiotbulli

The basement in my building flooded, my landlord sent a company today to check the water because it wasnt working properly and the workers forgot to turn something off and the whole basement lvl is flooded, about 20-30cm water i would say.

Of course i took a video and photos and the question is am i eligible for some compensation? A lot of stuff has to be thrown now cuz of this flood

What do you think of Ausbildung in Germany? Is it worth doing? Do people enjoy it? And, how are blacks treated in Ausbildung?

do you want to study at a uni or do an ausbildung?

#

depending on the Ausbildung, your qualifications might not have to be recognized

burnt vale
#

erre atm im thinking of a fallback plan in case i flunk any of my alevels but i do have igcse

#

So for ausbildung yws

#

But i believe even if I get a D for maths it can still be recognised as an abitur equivalent right?

olive summit
#

i wouldn't know, the process can take up to 6 months btw

burnt vale
#

Hm...

#

I mean both certs are recognised

#

But im not really sure if them being in english is an issue

#

For the application process

olive summit
#

read the document, it says both english and german certificates are accepted as is, for all other languages they must be translated

burnt vale
#

Ah.

#

Alright. I was quite confused because on the ausbildung website they didnt specify that so i had to double check

olive summit
#

well for instance, I did not need my diploma recognized to do my farmer Ausbildung. It didn't have to be recognized for Inudstriekaufmann/Kaufmann für Büromanagement/etc. Ausbildung either since you simply need a contract at a company for that one.

burnt vale
#

Did you have to apply for a visa?

olive summit
#

imo if you're confident it will be Abitur equivalent then just apply via uni-assist for study. You can also contact a Berufsschule with an Ausbildung you're interested in and ask them what the requirements are.

#

Well yes since im from the US.

burnt vale
#

Tbh my biggest worry for the abitur equivalent is that my visa application might get rejected

#

Lol

#

Because of math that may have become an E

#

I do know that people shouldnt worry as long as they get acceptance for a uni

#

I cant be sure tho

olive summit
#

The ABH doesn't review grades, if you have an Ausbildungsvertrag or an Immatrikulationsbescheinigung and meet the other requirements you can be granted a residence permit.

#

the "other" requirements being proof of financing, health insurance, etc

burnt vale
#

This is a dumb question but one does need a visa in order to get a residence permit right?

olive summit
#

well people use them interchangeably, but the "visa" part of a residence permit is what allows you to travel

#

they are technically different but are ultimately issued at the same time

burnt vale
#

I guess im really confused.

#

From what i know people can only apply for a residence permit in the country itself only

olive summit
#

that is what i did, so i wouldn't know of any other way tbh

burnt vale
#

So without a visa for a long term stay wouldn't that be impossible?

Unless you're telling me that i can take advantage of the 90 day stay limit

olive summit
#

when i first arrived i applied for my residence permit within that 90 day period, but i had help from the exchange program i was in at the time

#

so i imagine it could be difficult to manage it alone, but it should be possible in theory

#

keep in mind the processing period for your documents AFTER you submit everything can last up to 3 months or more, so you'd be cutting it close

burnt vale
#

Thats definitely risky lol

#

🤣 gosh it's stressful

olive summit
#

now if you have an ongoing application you should be able to stay until your application is resolved

burnt vale
#

ah yes i hesrd of that

#

Theres some kind of pass/document you get so you dont get in trouble right

olive summit
#

but its important to recognize that the 90 day period is for tourism and business trip purposes, you're not typically expected to apply for a residence permit during that time

#

yea i went over a month and got something signed by them

#

It is entirely possible, just make sure you have everything organized and prepared before arriving

burnt vale
#

I mean international students are required to renew their visa yearly

olive summit
#

probably not, as long as your passport is still valid

# tender hull Hello! I have a bit of a problem with deutsche bank application form. As I’m try...

So as you might know "ungültig" means invalid. Without having seen your specific problem, I can think of a few possibilities:

  • You might have used a special character the form might not be able to recognise.
  • You might have entered a place or number the form wants to check for validity. Either you typed it in wrongly or the form cannot find the corresponding entry in its database if it is referring to something to something outside of Germany/the country you are trying to apply at. Or it may be incorrect for Germany, even though it is not for your country of origin (for example the legal age you need to have for starting an account).
  • If its for typing in/setting a password, there often are specific conditions these have to follow which you might not have fulfilled in whole.

Hallo, I have a computer engineering bachelor degree and I checked in ZAB website an all essentially saying that it is recognized as equal. Though it's just a soft check, I haven't file the request yet. Would you say the most reliable way to immigrate to Germany is to find a job first? or can I apply jobseeker visa so I can stay there and find work? I'm from Indonesia if that helps, my English is basically close to native level (C1-C2). My interest is to work, though I'm open for study possibilities. Been looking up https://www.mygermanuniversity.com for uni, but I would assume it is difficult to get admitted to affordable uni or I would think it's not easy to get free/low tuition. Any input from anyone is greatly appreciated.

fiery edge
# vague pumice that's what it says yes. i'm just not sure if it's easy to get admitted there. i...

It's relatively easy to get a uni admission (at least for bachelor's) since most programs are non-NC (they accept anyone that fulfills the minimum requirements, which is mostly just getting a highschool diploma and the language requirements.
For master's though it's a bit more difficult if you have a degree from outside Germany. Even if your degree is recognized you might need to do some tests and take up some classes to make up for potentially missing credits. They look at such cases individually.
As an example, since u have a bachelor's, you might have not taken a few classes that the uni you're applying to sees as a prerequisite, so you'd likely get a conditional admission and be required to take these classes in your first semester in the master's program. And only once you pass the class would u be officially enrolled in the program.
These are called "Auflagen".

# warm hare What’s average wage of a student working a part time job in germany

This is a copy of what i posted some time back.
Depending on the city you'd need between 700 and 1000€ per month (as a student), as long as u don't spend unnecessarily. And it's relatively easy to get a 20h/week job that pays over 1k a month. That's at least 13€ / h. Later this year Germany will have a minimum wage of 12€ / h. @vague pumice

olive summit
#

1k a month for part time? Sounds way too optimistic. The minijob wages will be raised from 450 to around 520 a month.

fiery edge
#

Those are Minijobs.

#

Don't look for Minijobs if you wanna get paid more

#

But rather Teilzeit / Werkstudent jobs

olive summit
#

In my experience those dont pay much more

#

perhaps unless you live in a big city

fiery edge
#

I live in a city of ~100k and worked at a Lidl warehouse. The starting pay was 16,45€ / h for 60h a month

#

But yeah that's a hopeful amount tbf.

olive summit
#

In any case it's very uncommon for students to supplement their entire financing with a job

#

you started at 16,45€? That's a pretty good gig then

How Much Bank Balance Is Required for Germany Student Visa?

As of 2021, the amount required by the German Embassy/Consulate to be deposited into the blocked bank account when applying for a student visa to Germany is €10,332.

Do I have to add the University's tuition to the amount or not?
for example of the Uni's tuition is 15,000, Must I have 25,332 in my bank account??

# olive summit Maybe Dorf wages are just minuscule lol

Are there any fee-less/cheap student German Bank accounts that an international student (Australia) can open before arriving in Germany? And do australians need the sperrkonto?

N26 and DKB, Commerzbank etc, basically all I have tried so far require a German address. I don't particularly want to go with Deutsche bank because of the fees and the stuff they do.

I'm just looking for any old bank that will let me open a German bank account while in Australia for me to send and received funds to.

Additionally, I am confused as to whether Australians need a Sperrkonto. It is one of the few countries that do not require a visa for studying in Germany, and as far as I understand, a Sperrkonto is only needed for the visa. I couldnt find further information on this topic for these nationalities (iirc Australia, US, New Zealand South Korea and a few others). So do we need it or not?

chrome mulch
#

unfortunately I can't give any tips on opening a german bank account with no german address. But I can say that for me personally: I have never needed a Sperrkonto, even though it's technically required for my Aufenthaltstitel. I have consistently used a normal checking account with Commerzbank and was never asked about it. This tip was given to me by the international office at the uni in Frankfurt, who said that they don't really care as long as the right amount of money is in it, and has proven true across several cities since.

#

however: this is anecdotal so take it with a grain of salt.

Apart from all the things mentioned before, especially from @chrome mulch , there's one thing to get into a decent university, the other thing is to stay there and graduate. This is something most German students underestimate, as the difference of difficulty between school and university is quite large for a large number of courses.

Numerus clausus can mean two things: Either the government does not want to accept students in the field with low grades in school (most notably the medicine-relates fields). Or the university decides that the number of applicants is too high, so they prioritise those with good grades. So if you have no numerus clausus, this might mean that there are few applicants (for various reasons) or the dropout rate is so high that they want as many students as possible to start, as very few will actually finish their studies.

Just for illustration, when I started studying physics at Uni Münster as a minor subject (my major being mathematics), the physics study group I was assigned to started out with about 20 people. Two weeks later, over 5 of them had voluntarily dropped out and changed their field of study. At the end of the (first) semester, about 10 were left.

So depending on what you want to study, starting out with just "basic knowledge" might be enough for the university to accept you (as they usually don't check that if you have the right qualification certificates). But for some fields it might not be enough to stay.

# tight sky is it hard to get recommendation letters from the professors at german universit...

This usually depends on the university and professor. But in my experience it's easier if the class of the professor is small and you already had some (positive!) interaction with the professor in question.

Some universities/professors are quite liberal in giving away recommendations for a stipend. For example, in a first-semester IT-course the professor guaranteed a recommendation for every student with the highest possible grade of 1.0. (The exam had 120 points and you got the grade with about 105 of them, which is quite generous.)

#

For most professors in Germany, the highest hurdle seems to be to actually ask a professor, as students tend to be quite reserved about things like that. But my experiences are not that broad that I could generalise my observations.

plain orbit
#

most professors have a template for letters of recommendation anyway, since so many students would ask every year

#

"it is to my greatest pleasure to recommend <STUDENT> to <UNIVERISTY>

next hull
#

Ah, but another thing: If the recommendation letter has to have a specific format or go on about a special topic, professors generally appreciate it if the student research that on their own beforehand. Some professors just ask for a prepared letter from the student, proof-read it, and then just sign it. Had this experience with a master's student working in the professor's lab.

For students with good grades out university actually invited a guest speaker who is involved with selecting people for scholarship applications. His talk was quite long and his handout were >10 pages long. I'll try to summarise.

#

Benefits that come with a scholarship:

You should know that scholarships come with two different kinds of benefit to you:

  • Money: I'm not sure about the smaller organisations, but the big ones give out at least 300€ per monthe, which you don't have to pay back. Most of the big ones put the regular Bafög-Satz on top of that (Bafög is a gouvernment-provided grant for people in training which depends on your income, your wealth and the income of your parents along with a large number of other factors).
  • "Ideelle Förderung" (~non-material support): Most organisations will provide you with opportunities to get more experience in your field or to make connections through the organisation. It is generally understood from the organisation that this is the main benefit and the money is just "on the side".
#

Providers of scholarships (1/2):

Scholarships ("Stipendium" in German) can be divided into two broad categories by the size of the organisation giving out the scholarship (foundation -> "Stiftung" in Germany). First I'll talk about who the big ones are:

  • Stipendienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes ("scholarship foundation of the german people"): Seems to be the top of the lot in terms of prestige, but is only open to truly exceptional students. Is sponsored by the German state.
  • Political Foundations: Every major party sitting in the Bundestag (parliament/congress of Germany) is provided with funds for a scholarship programs. You don't have to be member of the party to apply. The partys that do this (did this at the time of the talk) are:
    • CDU (Christian-Democratic Union): Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung
    • CSU (Christian-Social Union, the sister-party of the CDU in Bavaria): Hans-Seidel-Stiftung
    • SPD (Social-democratic party of Germany): Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung
    • FDP (Free democratic party): Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung
    • Grüne (The greens): Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung
    • Linke (The left): Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung
    • AfD (Alternative for Germany): Desiderius-Erasmus-Stiftung
  • Religious/Confessional Foundations: There are some among that regularly take students not belonging to their faith.
    • Catholics: Cusanus-Stiftung
    • Protestants: Villingst-Stiftung
    • Jews: Ernst-Ludwig-Ehrlich-Stiftung
    • Muslims: Avicenna-Stiftung
  • Tarifpartner (translated with "Social partners", apparently):
    • By the trade associations (Wirtschaftsverbände): Stiftung der deutschen Wirtschaft
    • By the labor unions (Gewerkschaften): Hans-Böckler-Stiftung
#

Providers of scholarships (2/2):

There also is the Deutschlandstipendium ("German scholarship"), which is different from the "scholarship foundations of the German people". The money you receive is fixed to 300€ here, which is provided through a partnership between the German state and a private company. You have to reapply every year, while most other foundations would provide you for as long as you study, if you don't overdo it too much in terms of time.

Then there are the small ones: Foundations founded by indiviuals or smaller organisations. So some of those may not be able to offer you as much in terms of opportunities, but you'd have a lot less competition (and as far as I know, they all provide at least 300€/month). You'd usually have to fullfill very specific criteria to apply, but there are so many of these that there should be something in there for you. Specific conditions may cover things like researching a certain topic, coming from a certain place, being the first in your family to go to university, having already learned a trade and wanting to go further in academia or really anything you'd imagine. Also some of the bigger organisations offer more specific scholarships on the side as well.

#

If there are any questions to this already, I would answer them first.
Maybe I'll come around later to add more about the topic.

Knowing Cottbus, I'd definitely choose Paderborn but this is my personal preference.
Brandenburg is not the liveliest state, life is not that exciting there from what I know. My grandparents live there.
I don't know much about Paderborn, but NRW and the Ruhr area (which is not far away) are definitely livelier than Brandenburg.
However, it also depends on the university and possibly rent prices? It's best to look at both options and cities in detail and decide for yourself what is best.

"Every applicant has to submit proof of medical travel insurance covering the entire length of
the stay in Europe when applying for a Schengen visa.
The letter provided by your insurance company MUST clearly state the following conditions" and a big list of conditions follows.

It's been extremely difficult to determine which insurance policies cover what the German Mission wants from me, the pdfs that those companies give with a quote don't state anything as explicit (except for AXA) so I can't cross-compare insurances and it seems like I'm stuck with this one. Does anyone have experience with this, or would anyone be able to recommend me an insurance policy if you've done all this before and have actually gotten this strict proof of insurance letter?

#

I've spent some free time this past week just compiling pdfs from different companies and trying to suss out whether they'd work or not, and waiting back on emails from those insurance companies with super shitty and vague responses, very exhausting

I believe i went with AXA. Iirc, travel health insurance isn't expensive and it's less important than an actual national health insurance that you also need. Getting a travel insurance is standard practice for any kind of visa in Schengen countries so it should be straightforward regardless of whatever country you come from. My advice is to just call them and state you need a Schengen travel visa, and if need be forward them the details from your embassy page

International transfers are more dependant on the banks and less on fintiba. It depends which country it's from and how you transfer the money. I've tried sending money via direct bank transfer from the UK and it took roughly 24 hours. I've also tried using TransferWise and it took a little bit less time iirc. Generally speaking, try to transfer during weekdays as most german banks aren't fully operational during weekends, and expect at least 48 hours to be safe

so, I am from india. Considering that you guys know that india got 12 years of schooling, unlike germany. So talking about myself, I have completed my 12 years of schooling and to fulfill the 13 years of german schooling, I am doing 1-year bachelors from india and then I am thinking to apply to german public universities. So, apart from my schooling, i am a software developer. more specifically, a Frontend Developer. i have 2 years of experience in frontend development. So will it help me to get german universities? i mean, will my career background help me to get the admission?

I don't think so. It might help you with other things, but I doubt it would do anything for university admission. The things universities want are usually very clear and not that high-level. They want proof that you're eligible to study, that you're allowed to live in Germany, that you understand the teaching language to a certain point, and that you pay the admission fee/semester fee. I'm not sure whether additional conditions apply for international students. For some courses at some universities they have NC ("numerus clausus"), which means they prioritise students above a certain grade average. And for some rare fields there are special admission conditions. Apart from the conditions they themselves mention on their website you don't have to have anything else.
Is there a specific reason for concern? Like, do you want to enter a course with a really high NC which you don't have or something like that?

polar onyx
#

as i have seen many people are preparing to learn German to get admission in public universities easily and i am. really focusing on English taught public universities.

next hull
polar onyx
#

so what are the chances to get an admission in english taught CS course? will i be able to get into one of them?

#

and yes

#

In India, there are 2 major years and their scores determines a lot for getting admission. and i have scored 90+% in both of the years. I have a good, decent school grades tho

plain orbit
#

also when it comes to your work experience, that will come in handy when you start doing your master's and are doing Praktikum placements, as when you get to that level individual professors/leaders tend to care more about your experience and personality. they're more individualised than the streamlined bachelor intake

plain orbit
polar onyx
plain orbit
#

yeah i personally can't tell you much since i never applied for an english-speaking bachelor's. my advice would be to contact an admission office directly

just shoot your shot basically

polar onyx

i emailed HAW Hamburg last month

#

they replied

#

they simply said that they don't reply on emails but my profile looks good for admission

plain orbit
#

that's a pretty good sign tbh

polar onyx
#

yes and the university is providing IT in english

plain orbit
#

yeah normally they wouldnt'say if you would get accepted straight off, but if there is anything that you need before application they will tell you, which is the impirtant thing

#

like maybe they'll need your grades converted to the CEFR system, or an english exam, or whatever

#

but them saying that your profile looks good is already a good sign

polar onyx

i am really confused right now

plain orbit
#

in what way

olive summit

just go on their website under admissions

like i have 1 year to prepare everything and i am confused about that should i keep seeking and hoping for English taught bachelors courses or should I start learning German to apply in German taught courses

especially since you still have your own studies to do

#

i haven't started yet because of some issues

i will be starting by October

polar onyx
olive summit
#

yea there are a limited selection of english taught bachelor programs, even less in STEM

polar onyx
olive summit
#

wait, then why not just finish your bachelors in india

polar onyx
#

because in india, the education system is so shitty. students are being exploited, and the study is shit

#

for CS/IT/Mechanical you have to do 4 years of bachelors

olive summit
#

your credits are unlikely to transfer, especially not all of them. It might be more time efficient to just complete it while improving your German.

plain orbit
#

4 years is common in many countries, but i guess germany only has 3 years

polar onyx
#

yes

olive summit
#

it's more like 3.5 but many end up doing 4 by pushing back exams or certain courses/internship.

polar onyx
olive summit

theres a greater selection of them, and if you spend more time learning German you could even apply to German taught ones

polar onyx

yes hoping for that only.

correct me if I'm wrong. do germany have some universities that accepts 12 years of schooling?

However the challenge is that I finished my school in my country in 2015 and for some reasons could not complete a degree program during this time. I was working some part-time jobs/freelance unrelated to physics during this time. Can this seven year gap affect chances of student visa approval or cause the consulate to doubt my intention to study at university? I think it would be important to include a timeline in a CV or anything like that of what you've been doing in the last 7 years. I think the fact that you have a C2 cert and an admission should be very good for your visa. Hello
so when I have to do my internship during a master's degree while having to attend some courses at the uni, how does that usually work?

next hull
next hull
# thick dagger necessary for the degree

Then usually the university had a plan in how to incorporate it with the curriculum. Maybe they want you to do it between semesters. Maybe they've made room for it during the semester, as my university of applied sciences did. If you could ask someone from the same course at your university, this would be ideal. Otherwise you may ask a staff member familiar with the procedure. At most universities there's a position called Studienverlaufsberatung ("study-process-adviser"); if you can find one for your department, that would be good. Otherwise, the secretary might know whom you'd have to ask. Also there might be an explanation somewhere on the website of the course, but these can be quite hard to navigate.

thick dagger
plain orbit
# thick dagger Perfect! thank you so much!!

If i can offer my own experience (keep in mind that this could be very different from how your department handles it), we have a certain number of lecture ECTS we need to get, plus some from internships, and some from our master's thesis. In principle, it doesn't matter how we want to order our studies as long as we get all the ECTS. Some people actually start their master's degree immediately working on their thesis and have their lectures after, some do their Praktikum together with the lectures, and for me personally i did most of my lectures in the first 2 semesters and i will start my first Praktikum soon in the holidays

thick dagger
#

but I am very confused how to fit all those three things together in one semester as recommended by the university

#

I am thinking that the internship would be around 300 hours which would account to 4 months

plain orbit
#

Normally lab course would take place after the exams, so during the vorlesungsfreie Zeit

plain orbit
thick dagger
plain orbit
#

Do you know what theoreticum is?

thick dagger
plain orbit
#

Does your course have a more complete breakdown of their recommended study plan?

thick dagger
#

One moment let me check if that course is included in the module catalogue

#

#

So yeah from what I understood from translate it's preparation for thesis and research

#

but the workload is also around 300 hours

#

here's the catalogue, the courses for the third semester are at the end and they're all 300 hours of workload

#

since of course they're 10 ECTS but I mean their timing doesn't easily overlap during the semester and that's the problem

My course is conducted in german btw.

fiery edge
# remote badge I've been looking up recordings of classes in german Unis and wanted to know how...

It depends entirely on the lecturer. I've had profs speak clearly and slow like the prof in the vid, some that considered that foreign students have a more difficult time keeping up and make a conscious effort to speak clearly and not too quick, and there are some who just (naturally) speak really quick and it can be unclear. But they do make an effort to slow down if someone tells them they're going too quick.
Not something you can generalise.
I've had a prof who basically "spoke to himself" and u couldn't hear him even in the front rows despite him having a mic

#

But more often than not they speak at a regular, comprehensible speed. Bit quicker than in the vid

#

when i'm applying to a university as a foreign student

remote badge
# sterile axle hello everyone i have a question do i have to take the DSD exams if i have goeth...

that depends on your uni and the degree course you're aiming for. Look up the degree course you're aiming for and the unis will have clear language requirements for foreign students listed. Most courses taught in german require a C2 Goethe certificate/equivalent. If you have one of them, no need to go for preparatory courses(dsd). If not, you can register for preparatory courses provided that you have atleast B1/B2/maybe C1 depending on the uni.
That can vary widely for courses taught in english. It won't require C1/C2 for sure though.

although english tutors are really a dime a dozen, there's always demand for math tutors and stuff like that as far as I can see

there is demand for english and it's possible to find work there, but everybody claims to be able to teach english--particularly a ton of internationals who cannot speak german and are thus confined in what they're able to teach (default: english)
