So far, I might agree. I am very new but German words make sense. Some of the grammar is a little confusing or maybe it's words like zu that I am not quite understanding its place yet. I think these apps and stuff like Rosetta stone are cool but you have to supplement which I leanred the hard way with all my failed attempts to learn Spanish. But it's all good. here I am!

Yeah, there are gonna still be some things that don't make as much sense, like zu (at least for English speakers) but it's not as bad as English, I think. No matter what app you use, you're always gonna need more resources, even if it's just taking oart in conversations here. How are you finding Rosetta Stone? I've never particularly tried it

Agreed. Younger me thought I was all set after a few rounds of DuoLingo hahahaha...anyway. I do not think it's bad but I really dislike that these programms do not have further explanations. I like a good puzzle to solve but having to just notice words and their placement changing without an understanding as to why it is changing. Declinsions are new for me so we found this wonderful video online that made it make more sense and easier to digest. And.... some of the translations are possibly a LITTLE off but that's me wanting more explanation why / why not words appear in one place but not the other and the same idea is expressed.

So yeah... Rosetta stone is OK. Cannot say that the speaking piece is great. My husband has heard me mess up a word pretty bad and I will get 100% on my pronunciation. lol

I agree abt apps mostly.. And duo sucking. Busuu gives enough explanations to grasp the concepts imo so I always recommend/plug that. Youtube is definitely a good idea as long as you have a reliable enough channel, I recommend Deutsch für euch. Some translations are the equivalent rather than word for word so that makes sense. Where are you getting translations from or is this rosetta stone specific? Also, there was a lesson a couple weeks back on declension and the slides are pinned in #lessons if you want to look at those

Hahah, it's the Rosetta provided translations. I just typed a few out in Deepl's translator and although Rosetta wasn't wrong, I got to see zu's usage in the sentence with a second version of the idea being conveyed.

Hello, so my aunt lives in Germany and I live in a developing country. Naturally, the currency is different and so is the value. I'm wondering if €60 for 3 books of Henle sheet music is considered expensive (normally) in Germany/Europe. Converted into my currency, it is just not a reasonable price for music books. Before asking her (since she usually buys gifts when she comes here), I want to make sure that €60 is not a burden for Europeans? She lives okay I guess, not poor but not rich either.

My experience so far is that it has taught me enough to be able to have a foundation that i can then practice in other areas. Hence, being here. I'm sure there are plenty of things to be critical of but as someone using it I've found it helpful.

As for talking, the reason I'm here is to practice but if you mean voice then there are online Zoom meetings where you can talk to others based on your level.

@quartz viper „Ich werde geimpft“ means you are getting vaccinated. „Ich bin geimpft“ means you are vaccinated.

#

So in order to say you got vaccinated, turn werden into wurden, it’s simple past.

#

The confusing part is if I try to explain it with „I was vaccinated“ so I am using „got“

#

I was vaccinated can mean two things

#

Ich war geimpft
Ich wurde geimpft

Mean these two things

#

German just has a different form for each one

#

If you use „werden“ it describes the process, if you use „sein“ it described the current state.

It‘s actually totally smart to think of it like this because if it’s in the present tense „ich werde geimpft“ then you have to use „being“ as part of the translation anyways, ie „I am being vaccinated“ (whether or not you say it while a needle is in your arm does not matter, btw, it’s just before or during you can say it)

Spielen, wenn man mit älteren Menschen redet oder wenn man Brettspiele, Kartenspiele, etc. meint. Denn früher war "zocken" negativ konnotiert, da damit nur Teilnahme an Glücksspielen gemeint war.

Zocken wird im Kontext von Videospielen ausschließlich informell gebraucht, also mündlich, in Chats oder unter Freunden/Kollegen, nicht in z. B. Zeitungsberichten.

Ich würde aber generell meistens zocken sagen.
