other than that its fine though if you have fast fingers
sorry
it's not the most easy german lol
like a lot of political vocab, konjunktiv I which can confuse beginners, and the vocabulary is kinda complex at times
There are news for kids too
oh fairz
@hot cloak I have changed your name for now, please change your profile pic too. Racist/nationalist/sexist content of any kind will not be tolerated.
Finally on ||alpha|| it looks the same as ||beta|| which looks the same as ||normal discord||.
@rancid agate 😠
Yeah, spoiler works 😃
But I thought there would be more magic

I hate that you can't hide the spoiler things again

Oh you'll see when they roll it out.
You'll either hate me or love me, I'm not sure which.
Just a question but.... nationalist content.... what do you mean by that....?
(I don't want to ping moderators... but it's a question I got because I wonder what is put behind the words "nationalist content")
Basically don't post Nazi shit.
Once exams are over we'll be reworking both #282831147942281216 in general and the rules, so some things should be clarified.
Well, i won't do it.
So if Hitler poops, I can't send a picture of it?
But, Nazism doesn't represent nationalism for me.... nor fascism
No sir.
Aw
Well, the wording indeed leaves room for ambiguity, that's why it's being changed.
This is what I thought.
That it's kind of ambiguous...
(Also a thing that causes me trouble.... when I say I am a nationalist.... I'm automatically assimilated with Fascism and Nazis)
hallo
@still meadow No politics in this server please, especially not insults related to politics.
Affirmative sir won't happen again
@young ledge because that's something strictly rooted in nationalism and essentially a direct consequence of it. There is a difference between nationalism and patriotism
No absolutely no German teaching happens here
Twas a joke

Hallo. Guten Abend!
@nocturne frost weil ich es kann

hallo 😄
Guten morgen
@spring pilot please refrain from holding conversations in #introductions, thanks
Hey

welche, wenn ich fragen darf?
hi
@hot cloak Freiburg :)

A0, setzen, 6.
wie sprech dutsch
ich spreche deutsch @desert pecan
was das
ich weiß nicht was du eben gesagt habe aber ja ich spreche deutsch
ich schwöre
@desert pecan hey do you wanna add me so we can speak german to each other and learn some more?
kannst du machen wenn du willst
wunderschön ,':^)
n kollege von mir habe mal n paar deutsche Touristen überhört, die effektiv sowas wie “Die Einheimischen hier sprechen immer noch ihre ursprüngliche Sprache” gesagt hatten
lol
Hi
Hello @hot cloak
@whole rapids die passivaufgaben wurden gemacht, also bin ich bereit für mein Wort
@nocturne frost sich bekriegen
danke liebes pferd
Hallo
@viscid cape Remember when i asked about the „Was hast du Neues gemacht?“ thingy? I use it quite often tbh
lol
Warum fragst du denn dann nicht mich?
Krypti: Ich hab niemanden, mit dem ich sprechen kann
Auch Krypti: pingt nie jemanden
Dann nächstes mal
@viscid cape WIE GEHTS DIR; HAST DU IN LETZTER ZEIT WAS NEUES GEMACHT
@hot cloak ^ So solltest du tun 😠
If only I had someone to ask it to
Das ist aber nicht, was du wolltest! Entscheide dich doch mal!
hallöchen
Hallo.

Wie geht's dir?
Sehr gut, danke. Und dir?
Mir geht's gut, danke. 😄
Wie heißt ein "channel" auf Discord? Ein Kanal?

Achso

Guten Abend
In diesem Fall guten Morgen. Wie gehts?
Hello can someone correct this if its wrong 😃 Ich würde gerne zum Anfang meines Studiums zurückkehren und beweisen, Warum die Verspätung nicht meine Schuld war.
Ich bin auch immer müde, außer wenn ich es nicht bin
lol
Das war richtig, oder sollte es sein wenn ich nicht bin ?
*wenn ich es nicht bin/wenn ich nicht müde bin
Oh danke !
Irgendwie ist es so ruhig in diesem Kanal
keine ahnung
Hallo alles
Hallo Ich bin alles
nein, bist du nicht
“ALL errors”, eh?
- there should be a comma after Hallo
- ich isn’t capitalized
- you just said “Hi, I am everything”
nein du
- in linguistics, errors and mistakes aren’t the same thing and I believe you want corrections to mistakes too (a mistake is like a one-off thing you said wrong, while an error is a persistent thing you systematically get wrong)
so errors are repeated mistakes?
😎
hey trish, wie gehts
gut, bin grad vom strand zurückgekommen. und dir?
ach so

sehr gut, suzu.
well, that's the extent of my german capabilities, see you folks later
lol bis später, caroline
@rich hatch hmmm, also...
um genau zu sein studiere ich weder deutsch noch koreanisch
und koreanisch lerne ich nur ab und zu, wenn ich Lust drauf habe
hab grad bemerkt warum hast du die level a rolle 😄
memerrem lol
das weiß jeder
aber du bist ein mod
ja?
natuerlich kannst du deine Rolle aendern, richtig?
das kann man, auch wenn man kein mod ist, ctu lol
lol
oops
rif ich
also, joa, aber mir macht's nichts, wenn ich eine A rolle habe
achso
ctu, wann B?
ich kann nicht aufhören, 'achso' wie 'achoo' zu lesen
ich fuehle nicht als B
a- A- Ahhhh CHOOO

ka, ich denke, so klingt es besser
es klingt ein bisschen wie Russisch 🤔
ich schätze mich nicht auf B
weil du (fast) C bist? ^_^

in exchange, take this one:
Schabernack
@whole rapids
@pallid kindle um etw. bangen
@whole rapids what’s the rest that you’re getting down rn?
in general? vocab and application of it
grammar? not being concentrating on that lately, but want to get word order down properly
to get natural word order
instead of English leaking in
I see
How do you learn vocab?
It’s the hardest part for me
Thanks for the word btw, was truly exciting
Was liest du am meisten
Gute Nacht, Kleine
For anyone who's done Steuererklaerung in Germany - how much would a working student get in returned taxes ? like more than 50 ? 100 ? wanna know if it's worth it to pay a company around 30 euros.

@hot cloak Heyo Teri, would you have sometimes time to VC and help with reading and pronunciation in korean please? 👀
@charred mulch Could you change your profile picture and username of your account(since it pops up when you're pinged)? Racist/nationalist/sexist content of any kind will not be tolerated.

@radiant matrix hmmm do you think I might have gone a little bit off the scope of the guide 😅
guide?
The thing you suggested to write
In answer of the question "how and where do I learn the language?"
oh as in beginner’s guide thingy?
*ein
Danke krazan
Oh nein
musst die mods fragen
@hot cloak Sag maln bisschen was auf Deutsch. Nur, damit wir wissen, dass du auch Muttersprachler bist
Guten Tag wie geht es ihnen heute, schönes Wetter nicht war?
Reicht das?
joa, danke und willkommen :)
thx
Wo ist eigentlich der Grammatik channel ?
etwa #questions und #beginner-german
In diesen Channels geht es meistens um Grammatik
ok
@nocturne frost I still don't understand 😅
Is the speaker saying that the "terminological ..." term is very formal ?
Uh no I just meant the phrase is very formal and dramatic
Aha
@true dragon yes but what does the whole " .... is of unfailing interest to the honorable gentleman" mean 😅
@rustic sedge Speaker A: Speaker C lied. Speaker B to Speaker A: You seem to have a strong interest in whether Speaker C lied.
Cheers
Now this level of formality and articulation is quite impressive
How can I learn to speak like that 😅
Or I don't need to speak like that?
@solemn gull my korean reading thingy happens on sunday, time: now minus 1h 15 min
Teri said yes? I'll try to peek. @hot cloak
same
I think you should have most of the vowels. Except for ㅓ
i have that
Then it's just consonants 😱
US
consonants are a problem in korean? Do you mean in terms of associating glyphs with sounds or making the sounds themselves?
Making the rounds and listening
@hot cloak "symbols"
ㅅ is just s/ß
do you live near the coast?
hmm
you see a flat line
a line
troll
if the earth were round
i have problems differentiating the normal, aspirated and "stronger" letters
you'd see a curve
thats it...... m convinced
I was shocked when some homeless dude pointed this out to me
so I can understand your disbelief
please stop trolling, we're trying to have a conversation on stuff here ^^
i can read and pronounce it, i'm basically A0 grammar-wise
i see :o
Hello fellow A0
ok so, as far as aspirated vs not aspirated goes:
- practical example: put your palm in front of your mouth and say
t!. If you feel a puff of air hit the hand, that's aspirated. English, by the way, does this with p t k all the time, you hear it especially from british speakers and some accents of american more than others
as it happens with t, it happens for other consonants. Korean, as many other languages, does it only with unvoiced consonants (so p t k, but not their voiced counterparts b d g)
ok, i think i got the aspirated ones
quirk of korean: as you may or not already know, when it's at the start of a word, a consonant will be always unvoiced. Aspirated consonants in korean are always unvoiced even in the middle of words
!!! i did think it was so but wasnt sure
that's why you may see western words written in korean with aspirated consonants in the middle of a word, to maintain for example a t ㅌ, that with a regular ㄷ would instead become a d
makes sense
as for stronger letters, what's your native language again?
ok so, afaik your language doesn't have the distinction, and english or german don't either. Moreover, my native language does use them extensively, so they're natural to me, and all this may complicate it for you, but i'll try my best to explain ^^
i also speak vietnamese if that helps
but before i try anything else, you should know that the best way to learn that is probably to find a minimal pair (two words that sound the same, except for that one letter. Such as what in german could be Massen vs. Maßen) and audio of it
hmmm, yeah i should definitely try that
so that you can try to distinguish the two and intuitively find what makes them different. It's normal for it to be hard to hear at first because neurologically, our brain "unlearns" to distinguish stuff that it doesn't need to, so it takes a while
oh makes sense
if i knew korean better i could help you find words but unfortunately my vocab hardly reaches 10 words lol
its ok!! i can ask around, thanks a bunch for the tips! ❤
btw, congrats on the wedding, just realized i didnt say anything lol ❤
haha np, thank you ^^
anyway, i think i have one more tip for double consonants. It should be rather easy with s since it's a fricative
What's your language berkzi?
if you imitate a snake you do ssss, that's definitely longer than the normal s you do when pronouncing words with s. Then it's just a matter to find the shortest "sssss" sound that is long enough to be different from a single "s"
I'm Italian, natively
i dont get that
hm
If you imitate a snake and do snake you won't get banned.
^ the right motivation
random thought that probably won't help: sometimes English natives, especially some accents of british, might pronounce a double consonant without noticing. Since those don't exist in english, they'd mentally detect them as the same letters
but for example a finnish or italian person would be able to tell the difference
i'd be able to help better with this in voicechat but i won't be available for that until monday morning
no problem, ill try to find some audios or ask some natives, thanks anyways berzi!!
There you go, lol.
it even sounds like you lmfao
@pallid kelp voll cool du sprichst also Italienisch? die Sprache wollte ich schon immer lernen, weißt du ob es einen Server wie dieser gibt halt für Italienisch?
@hot cloak see if you can find words on forvo that form minimal pairs. Since your problem is not specific to korean but rather of phonology in general, you can search for words in other languages that have double consonants. Recommendattions: italian, greek, finnish. An example of italian minimal pair: moto, motto
@shy plank jo, sicher. Bin zwar mod darauf. :P
https://discord.gg/nDJ8gA
Omg even the name is the same lol
we have fans
I’ll check it out, thanks again berzi :D
@pallid kelp dankeschön!
I won't get to do Italian until last quarter of this year
you can start now
no do german
Wow @pallid kelp no advertising next warning = shot dog omggg.
knowing arrem, he'll give you a dog just to shoot it
what if i shoot the dog before he can even give it to me
@sudden panther what then?
Then we buy him a cat and shoot it.
DON'T shoot cats wtf what are you a monster
Arrem and monster are synonymous
Hallo alles
Morgen
Hallo alle zusammen?
Ampel was just trying to be inclusive and say hi to objects too :P
@pulsar edge wo in Deutschland wohnst du, wenn ich fragen darf?
hey
I listen mostly to exo and NCT - especially nct 127 and nct u
Bts a bit but I’m not such a fan @median tree
@hot cloak exo has such good songs.. and D.O.'s voice 👌 💯 .
Have you heard BTS' Spring day? That's prolly my fave song of them.
Have you gone to a Kpop night in Germany before?
@pulsar edge ich war nur neugierig
und hab noch nie von einer kpop nacht in de gehört
@median tree yeaaaaaa, i like d.o the most there
you should also check out exo cbx
and my fave songs from bts are blood, sweat and tears and idol
@hot cloak yeah I liked Blooming day (that 'Can I be your boyfriend' is catchy xD) and Horololo.
Do you like any girl groups? Red Velvet and Blackpink have nice songs ^^
i dont think im going to hamburg tonight tho lol
i like those two songs too!!
also hey mama
and no, i dont listen to girl groups but im into solo by jennie lately
That one's so catchy lol. Her group even did a collab with Dua Lipa. I still can't believe how good those all groups dance ;-; I just sit and stare
im too poor for parties
yeah, i know righttttt
if you like the dances then NCT will blow your mind!
I only know Simon says and Regular. I'll have to check them out further
Sure ^^
7th sense
Limitless
Yestoday
Dream in a dream
Chain
Boss
Oh, Teamin is also good - move by teamin is one of my favorite dances
Ok i just checked all of them lmao and I gotta say they are good 👀
7th sense has such a nice vibe to it? Almost futuristic lol idk. Chain and Boss are 100% bops 💯 👌
Oh Move is great
Does he have any more solos?
Bc i've listened to some before xD
no way
i know like 5 of them thats all
do you know sm just debuted nct chine under a chinese label?
I only remember Lucas because comments seem to like him xD
🤔
Wait so
They separated them ??
yeah, cuz korea and china have some beef with each other
so sm had to set up a new company in china
no, i mean the countries, not the members lol
i remember mark cuz hes in all units so there are memes about him joining nct china despite not being chinese lol
yeah, im learning korean rn but im A0
I mean, Mark is an easy name to remember xD
I heard it is super hard. What are their letters/characters called? I know there are kanji in Japanese or sth xD
hangul - the alphabet is easy i think
cuz it was created artificially
im not sure about the language yet, ill tell you after/if i reach B lol
I find those languages fascinating. Like reading them seems like a new world to me because I'm obviously familiar only with standard European alphabet, it takes me longer to even read Cyrillic let alone sth else xD
Well good luck with it ^^
yeah, im also only familiar with the latin script and it takes me ages to read anything lol
thanks c:
standard european
latin :^)
its called the latin script, oder?
latin alphabet or script
but it's still a rather vague name either way because depending on the speaker and context, it may or may not also refer to letters with diacritics or expansions such as þ ð (used in Icelandic, which does use latin script exclusively)
aka "Germanic languages latin alphabet"
actually aka english alphabet
since there's no language other than some germanic ones that uses just those letters without any additional letter or diacritic
english and dutch
does afrikaans use any diacritics?
well dutch regularly uses diareses to split diphthongs
i feel like that should count
dutch uses diacritics, and also treats ij as a letter
complete with capitalizing it as IJ
does afrikaans not use any diacritics ever?
idk
there has got to be some other lang without diacritics
sth with a small phonology
The alphabet is perhaps the smallest in use, with only 12 letters of ISO basic Latin alphabet without any diacritics and ligatures. The letters are A E G I K O P R S T U V. T and S both represent the phoneme /t/, written with S before an I and in the name 'Rotokas', and with T elsewhere. The V is sometimes written B.
there we go
rotokas
all i can think of is serbian, but it doesn't exclusively use latin
but is there any language with exactly all 26 letters and nothing else?
uhh
look, it's pretty clear at this point that if one exists aside from english, it's just a coincidence
the "standard" was built on english. It's quite apparent
the standard was built on english
it was built on eurolangs sans diacritics
id say the standard was built on latin
German has the same alphabet as english, it just also has a diacritic and a ligature
neither of which are considered letters
i meant that the letters selected to be in the standard was based on english
indonesian and malay got their transliteration through western cultural influence. It's safe to say they were not a factor in determining the iso standard
Esperanto spin off lmao
ye
the only option left is interlingua. But I doubt it was what the iso people started from to determine the standard
the iso alphabet is literally “all the letters in common use throughout europe, but without diacritics”
^
that’s eurocentric, yes, but not anglocentric
What are diacritics?
things like ◌́
little marks above or below a letter
or ◌̋
So accents are diacritics...?
where ◌ is any letter
ėēĕęěéèêë
the only way out i see is that it's the smallest intersection of the set of letters used in european languages with latin script. But that may yet not fit
just a different name for the same thing
accents are a type of diacritic
accents are diacritics, but not all diacritics are accents
éè called accents in romance languages
what’s so hard about “all the regular letters, wtihout any diacritics”?
How do you send this dotted circle symbol?
ç has a diacritic but it's not an accent
Ah, I see
why is your compose key a musical note
“compose“
i mean it makes sense from the name but not really from the functionality
I mean it has to be called something right
but why
idk
@radiant matrix >what’s so hard about “all the regular letters, wtihout any diacritics”?
the fact that it's not just all the regular letters. There are letters without diacritics used in natural european languages with latin script that are not part of the standard, such as þ and ð which i mentioned earlier.
And the fact that only one or few languages actually use those doesn't matter, because many languages don't use many of the languages included in the standard.
the keyboard itself gives ♫ if I double-tap it
“regular” as in “used by most languages”. þ is used by one language. ð by two.
make that “most major european”
"most"?
þ is also a derivative of runes and not of the latin or greek alphabets which gives it another reason not to be included
that would be a good argument
just about every european lang has ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ as a subset in its alphabet, even if there are little to no native words with some of those letters
meanwhile just about no european lang has Ä or ẞ or Œ or Þ
every european lang that uses the latin alphabet*
I mean, what else would you have added or removed from the standard alphabet?
i can't think of any romance language which natively includes w and k
there arent any @pallid kelp
in Italy? No
you dont learn K in school?
JKXWY are not part of the italian alphabet learned in elementary school. You learn it later by usage etc but it's not official
fine, so italian is an exception in the other way
but e.g. portuguese also doesn’t really use K or W and they learn them at school. same with german and C
I think W and K aren't included in Spanish and French either, officially
And Y, we dont use Y either
for portuguese you mean?
Yeah
Das ist ein schöner und sexy Regenbogen

@faint bluff Welcome to our server 👋 the only context I’ve ever seen “Ich hab lieb” used in is when you tell someone you like them - mostly with family/lovers since it’s pretty... uh, strong? So like “Ich habe dich lieb”, so using it with languages sounds strange :’)

@hot cloak haha danke! I’ve only seen it in the context of a song I sang “Herr ich habe liebe die Stätte deines Hauses“ and could only piece together “ich habe liebe” what’s a way I could use it in other contexts?
It's "ich hab lieb die Stätte deines Hauses..."
It's like saying "ich liebe die Stätte deines Hauses", the parts of the whole phrase are just kinda mixed up @faint bluff
you can do that for (almost) every phrase in German, actually.
They can sound wrong, especially to a native speaker, but technically they are right.
As long as you keep the "Satzglieder" together, the phrase is grmmatically correct.
So einfach kann man Satzglieder umstellen: In dieser Übung lernst du, Satzglieder umzustellen. Jeder Satz besteht aus Satzgliedern, die man umstellen kann.
I think in the sentence "ich hab lieb die Stätte deines Hauses" the word order is technically incorrect just like in "Kommst du mit ins Kino?"
Hallo leute. Wie geht's? Ist jemand wach?
Morgen
hallo
Moin!
Hallo alles! Aber, hier es ist nacht! Was machst du heute alle?
Wo lebst du?
@whole rapids Erbgut
@hot cloak "kommst du mit ins Kino" is just a normal question someone would say
The other sentence is also right, but not in an order you would normally say. To a native speaker, it sounds a bit ancient. But grammatically its still 100% correct
@heavy wave my point is, "kommst du mit ins Kino?" does sound perfectly natural in spoken language, but also is plainly incorrect in written language. The rule is, separable prefix goes to the very end: mitkommen, liebhaben.
except it’s not because that sentence is analyzed as having the verb kommen plus an adverb mit
mit doesn't exist as an adverb
so what's the right way? Möchten Sie mit mir ins Kino gehen?
You probably don't have to bother yourself with that as a native speaker
You can say
"kommst du mit ins Kino?" or
"kommst du ins Kino mit?"
They're both right
Because in German you can mix up a lot as long as you keep the Satzglieder together
See their explanation
Roman, as evidenced by the sentence “Kommst du mit ins Kino”, which only makes grammatical sense if mit is an adverb, it exists as an adverb
language changes, get over it
the only sense in which we can assign parts of speech to words is by looking at what syntactic situations the words come up
But there's a quite strict rule about separable prefixes at the end of a clause
yes which is why I am arguing it is not a separable prefix
It's not like we can do that with every verb
separable prefixes don’t appear in that position
so clearly it isn’t one
which leaves the option of “the verb is actually kommen and mit is acting as an adverb”
which makes perfect sense to me
Why do phrases from the spoken language have to be grammatically correct?
Because it IS correct
because that is the only sensible notion to even define “grammatically correct”
otherwise you end up with speakers who cannot speak their own native language correctly, and that is an oxymoron
grammaticality (in linguistics) cares about how people use the langauge
not what some stuck up style guides prescribe
From my perspective schriftliche Sprache and gesprochene Sprache are kinda two different worlds
they're not
As long as you write words like they're supposed to be written and not like you hear them, it's the same
You hear a phrase, you write it down, both would be correct
Yea it's correct
It's not something someone would say daily, but its 100% correct
I don't think it's entirely correct to say that separable prefixes need to be at the end of the clause. I would say this type of sentence is a stylistic variation which alters where the verbs are located in a clause.
normally you would say "ich räume mein Zimmer auf"
You can also say "mein zimmer räume ich auf"
The ending of clauses in German have some flexibility for style preferences, even if they are not all that often written this way.
Doesn't have to do with "written", cause some wouldnt also say those type of sentences in their daily life, cause they sound weird. But they're correct
@heavy wave What I meant is that in a standard/learning context, you will usually see it with the verbs all at the end. Because in those contexts you don't see as much stylistic writing as you would in everyday usage.
But in real life, you will see variations for certain kinds of examples.
Like often wie/als prepositional phrases are placed after the verbs, right?
Normally yea
So I think it is inaccurate to call the "mit" an adverb. I also think it's inaccurate to call the sentence grammatically incorrect. Rather, it's just a case where a prepositional phrase is pushed outside the normal clause for stylistic reasons.
Maria, I'm replying to the whole discussion, lol. My comments aren't specifically directed at you personally.
@hot cloak KANNTE ICH SCHON (aber ich hatte die Bedeutung vergessen, ich habe es mit das Erbstück verwechselt
I dont think about it much, I often dont even know what to call the type of a word in a sentence, like "is this an adverb or not" lol I dont even know
I'm proud enough to know Relativsätze.. Und Fälle, wie Dativ, Genitiv etc

whether you know it or not doesn’t affect its identity though ^^
(sry had to go eat lunch)
Ich räume auf mein Zimmer sounds wrong to me
This discussion seems like it's a discussion of how things can go outside the Verbklammer or whatever it's called
whereas imo the mit in the sentences above allows for the same amount of freedom as an adverb, e.g. Mit komme ich ins Kino is a correct, albeit very weird sentence
sounds is not the right way to think about it in our particular discussion
Maybe Satzklammer
(because it creates contrast with mit which is not really something you can constrast)
grammaticality judgements by native speakers are absolutely relevant to determining grammaticality though
and that’s exactly what that “sounds” is
it’s just code for “I perceive this sentence as ungrammatical”
From my experience my native-speaker intuition doesn't have anything to do with grammar, at least that's how it is with Russian
I just had to remember and accept a lot of things
then you are simply using the word “grammar“ differently from how it is used in linguistics
and that is all
also, it simply means that your native language is not standard russian
it may be very similar to it, idk
I'd say that's just how the language policy is in my country. Of course I am not a linguist at this point.
Let's say German is very liberal grammar-wise in comparison
yea the thing is linguistics gives no flying fucks about language policy (except for sociolinguistics)
ehh
Russian iirc is rather standartized, due to historical reasons? actually its an interesting question, but I believe it lacks the diversity of dialects, unless you count belorussian and ukrainian as dialects of russian
(you probably shouldn't)
like, there are dialects, but those are mostly variations on pronunciations and are more typical for more rural/isolated regional stuff
nah, language gives a lot of fucks about policies, if policies are "all books and media use standartized russian"
fair nuff
взымать or взимать?
in the context of linguistics, every speaker has an internal grammar (which may be rather different from whatever the standardized varitey is). these grammars are very systematic, but don’t all follow the same system
“wrong” in the context of linguistics means “does not follow that specific internal grammar”, and in particular does not mean “does not follow the codified standards pushed by politicians”
what is wrong to me may not be wrong to you
even if we both claim to be speaking german
🤔
I want to say first, Roman, but I am not 100% sure actually.
okay, on checkup I was wrong: it's взимать, because вз here is not a prefix.
Yes
otoh wikipedia lists взымать as old/archaic form of the same word
Because the spelling of the word is completely contra-intuitive
Because the word is a direct borrow from old church Slavonic
Although we have взыскать etc
And there are a lot of such words
It would be fair to accept both spellings but nah
взимать is exception from the rule which states that after prefixes ending in, uh, strong consonants, you must use ы
взыскать is prefix вз + иск or something like this
взимать has root взим or so
so uh
Not really, technically it's still вз+иметь
not even exception as much as not part of the rule cause, counterintuitively, its not prefix
hrm
https://ru.wiktionary.org/wiki/взимать
Корень: -взима-; глагольное окончание: -ть [Тихонов, 1996].
but
Этимология Образовано из вз- + иметь, далее от праслав. *jьmǫ : jęti, от кот. в числе прочего произошли: др.-русск., ст.-слав. имѣти, имамь, а также възѩти, възьмѫ.
lol
Like I said it most likely has to do with Old Church Slavonic
ye
joke is, wiktionary page on взымать lists it as having prefix вз and root ым
Yes because that's another point of view
so basically, both are correct, but over time взым started being thought of as one big root, leading to rule about prefix and consonant not applying anymore
thus transforming to взимать
quite peculiar
@hot cloak verriegeln
@whole rapids jmnd. anranzen [jmnd. beschimpfen/anmeckern]
@turbid mason danke dir, ich ranze meine Freundin jeden Tag an
@raw prawn @rancid agate It should be noted that German is still a very flexible language and we can say "unter sehr hohen Druck- und Temperaturbedingungen"
works. but no one said german isn't flexible
@hot cloak yes
What advice? 👀
Oh no. Did you get Suzu to study physics? :///
A bit
I’m just reading süddeutsche cuz one of the teachers said they often use their articles in exams and saw this post and got reminded of you lol
💞
Also, could you pls change arrems name to OUT?
I'm the same permissions level as you suzu lmfaoo
No bc I'm not disgusting. ://
I thought we can change his nickname

Wow will you make me water toast?
Ok. :sadcat:
I'll throw it straight into your mouth too so you dont have to move

Maybe put it in a blender first so I don't have to chew either. Though it is water toast so I don't imagine it'll require much chewing.
I'll do even better, I'll just chew it up and regurgitate it out like birds do
@sudden panther we match
You're the IN to my OUT.
HA. Gayyyyyy
Regurgitate ❤ horkys so smart
👋
Hallo Ari. Wie geht's
yoo
@peak burrow quiescent
oh I pinged you in the wrong place
ist egal
@pallid kelp if you were writing it in a ticket I imagine this issue would almost never occur because it should have been already established that John was a carpenter
Text not ticket
Still thinking about work
But yeah, separate sentences seems more natural
no just, imagine you see a broken car down the street, you recognise the car for being john the carpenter's, and you want to tell your friend around the corner about it
but you both know a plethora of johns because it's a very common name
and for some reason you have a disease that prevents you from splitting a fact into multiple sentences
(this is turning into a d&d game for grammar nerds)
The phrasing would more often be used with "that X" instead of "the X" as well.
Like "that dog of John's got out again" and stuff like that.
Since naturally you'd normally just use John's car, John's dog, etc.
But in this other case, you're emphasizing it differently thus a different structure occurs.
@prime crag lets talk here
yeah there are tons of torrents that come with subs
