that guy is supremely weird
you seem to have won

he was certainly different than the typical trolls
Ja, woran hatted jelejen
but it seems by referee decision rather than your own skill
are you still satisfied?
"different" https://i.imgur.com/ihN27dZ.png

before that he only asked for translations for old philosophical books or so
without wanting to learn german
so there's that
Sol, seems alright. I guess having your contrahent in an argument shot into lower earth orbit by the swing of a ban hammer is a fine way to finish a conversation ¯_(ツ)_/¯
ah yes, I was employing understatement

i kinda wanted to see what else he was trying to say to our lord
Here no. He went on to talk how it would be silly to have Merkel lead you in a war against Turkey, which is when we decided to get rid of him.
Trolls D:
Trolls 😦
Well, that would be silly, but for a different reason than i think he intended it to be 😛
Just a smelly troll. Nothing to worry about. 😉
So yee.
Okay, so I'll write it again: "The French girl's favourite horse". 🐴
Oki dokie.
des lieblingsferd dem französischem mädchen
(Arrem, why)
...
(Mika, sorry. <3)
Yeah, jus wait a sec. I am translating.
Nobody cares.
Yeah see this is why I suggested #questions. Because I can yell at people for being offtopic there.
Mika, savage.
for learning? sure...
Ok, I'm done here.
I am sorry but please, I need concentration, thank you
good job arrem
weww banned
Please enjoy some lovely peace and quiet™.
Thank you Arrem.
Yes, let's do LEARNING TIME Flops 2017.
Thanks
Genitive episode.
So. Base. Give us the sentence again and let's maybe try not to get it burried in banter.
Did I miss another banning?
"The French girl's favourite horse".
Why oh why
let's go.
And if anyone else wants to try it, let me know, I'll give you one.
Did the edgy teen get banned?
Yes.
Yes.
Me?
How are you doing fraktur in latex?
\mathfrak
"Das Liegblingspferd des französichen Mädchen"?
wait no.
Des. Not Dem.
WHY.
let me rephrase dat.
The dem might be my fault. badpokerface
ban arrem again
Yes.
Do rephrase it though. And think about the genitive endings.
Good to see its gone
OH.
Thanks mods
it
👌
LMAO
The only edgy teen allowed is flöpsi
and Solet
They aint edgy
Am I edgy?
Super edgy
Yes. Now back to work or banned.
Wow.
I bet u only wear black or very dark grey
LOL NO
And have at least four Evanescence albums
BRING ME BACK TO LIFE
THERE'S A MISTAKE ON THE SECOND ADJECTIVE

USE THE CORRECT ARTICLE
AND LOOK UP THE PROPER SPELLING OF FRENCH
AND THINK ABOUT GENITIVE ENDINGS
AND WE SHOULD STOP SCREAMING
NEIN
I DIDN'T USE THE RIGHT ARTICLE
WER SCHREIT, HAT RECHT
let's do once again without screaming
No you used "dem". You corrected yourself afterwards, but you should correct the whole sentence too. 😉
Oh yeah lol
so after that there is the "french" don't tell me I have just forgotten one letter or so...
or swapped 2 letters, that's a thing
You have.
go write flaps
You swapped 2 letters in another word.

And forgot a letter in "french"
mmmh let me see dat again
Oh I totally missed "Liegblingspferd"
LOL
Rewrite it while paying attention. 😂
wait yeah there is a typo. FINALLY I CAN SEE A TYPO WITHOUT PROOFCHECK.
Damn, Jawzie.
Oki, so let's do this
i have the feeling flappsy needs more time just to translate a genitive sentence
than if we give her a long sentence
🤔
It's not even a complete sentence
yep
close
Good. Now think about genitive endings.
dammit.
Guys ima get food now
now write it correctly
Like, I think you're literally missing what I've been explaining for the last two days, so let's put it in simpler words.
If it's masculine or neuter and in genitive, you have to add an ES or an S at the end. I'm not sure if there's a rule for when you add which ending. 🤔
🤔
The rule is: learn it.
Thank you Arrem, but I think I saw the mistake right away 5 secs ago.
Base, that's rule number one of German, really.
Good. Now rewrite your sentence.
"after everyone telling you to look at it"
Substantive, die auf einen Zischlaut, beispielsweise -ss, -z oder -tz enden, bilden den Genitiv grundsätzlich auf -es, also des Hasses, des Glanzes, des Satzes, des Reflexes. Nur -s wird verwendet bei Substantiven, die auf -en, -em, -el, -er oder auch mit einer Verkleinerungssilbe enden, also etwa des Schwimmens, des Pegels, des Fahrers, des Büchleins, des Gärtchens. for Arrem
Oh my god.
Doesn't exist, Kelsey.
I am going to eat.
Enjoy.
That's lovely Kels, thanks. 😄
Before, sentence:
x) you're welcome, Duden explaination 👌
No food until you finish your German.
"
yeah
are you sure, flaps?
goddmait
It's correct.
yay
Dammit Mika. 😦
Question: Would "Das Lieblingspferd der Französin" be a bad translation because it implies a woman instead of a girl?
👏
now I go eating
That's not how you build up confidence. 😛
I'm the best Spielverderber.
It would be fine unless context required more detail, henbruas.
'to eat'*
In this case, it would be acceptable.
Viele Mikas verderben das Spiel. 😦
Also are diminutive denonyms a thing?
Uhh
Like, can you make a word that means "small french person"?
I haven't ever heard one.
🤔
Don't think so.
if you are a schwabe
You can probably just say junge Französin or something.
Franzöchen sounds weird.
And doesn't exist
Because I spelled it wrong.
I blame you directly
Whoa.
So rude.
He... tortures you directly? 🤔
Whether you're at fault or not isn't important. I still blame you.
sure, as long as it makes your german better :)
if not, you're gonna have to rethink it
@valid ice
Yes! It was my cat a year and a half ago! 😄
Luna, if my German level were based on my ability to blame others for my shortcomings, I'd be C3 by now.
Adorable kittycats server.
My cat refuses to do anything remotely cute anymore though
So this is the newest picture 😐
She just moans and sleeps in a grumpy manner
Aw.
Is your cat me?
You wish you were that cute.
i wish you were cute
Me too. 😦
I feel so attacked right now.

ICH WERDE BEDRÄNGT.
The violence inherent in the system!
Jawzie next ban?
👌🏽 Who made Arrem king anyway
I am back.
For what?
Yeah, there are some in #resources but did you want something more specific?
https://www.reddit.com/r/German/wiki/index this one maybe?
this is linked there: https://coerll.utexas.edu/gg/gr/index.html
You could save some lines by using \n for newlines
can't really read the lines of code
not useless if you're practising
not sure why there are thinking faces under what I said
what I mean is that I can't read your lines of code, the image is too blurry for me, but I'd like to read them
Cute.
@hot cloak I once made a C program for my dad on Father's Day, he got really annoyed when I insisted on showing it to him because he thought it was some kind of crappy game
😅
Managed to show it to him at the end though
I get that :c
Happens a lot lol
Okay, @ocean robin
Yus.
Starting with an easy one: "My sister's boss".
😮
😮
Arrem is always here. Watching. Silently judging.
Silently.
"Der Chef der Schwester." 🤔
Reread what I wrote, Flappy. 😏

In particular, whose sister?
Can't be my sister, I don't have one.
What.
Me neither, we're like, the same person. 😮
Touché.
You said "the boss of the sister", Base wanted "the boss of my sister".
But what you said is indeed correct. Just not what he asked for. A tiny change should do the trick. 👌
Good Flopps.
I don't want to say something wrong, so let's check, but before that
Could "meiner" be correct?
✅
Yep.
😄
"der Chef meiner Schwester."
Now find the mistake.
You tell me.
I don't see any. I doublechecked "Schwester" because I knew I could do a typo.
Correct. Your sentence is fine. 👌
Hehe.
Okay, Flappy, next stage of the challenge.
"The house belongs to my sister".
WHAT.
Dibs on the next next stage of the challenge.
That's not genitive, is it?
Dative afaik
because the sister's house is the same thing
You could translate it as My sister's House
Then it would be genitive haha
I have one last one after this, Arrem.
It is.
Then you can.
Stop spoiling things B speakers.
Goood, a seperable verb.
Haha sorry
On the note of Level B
I'll crawl back to my lonely corner and stay in a fetal position
Do you plan on getting the Level C role anytime soon Arrem?
"Das Haus gehört meiner Schwester zu." I think. I see "zugehören" for he translation of "to belong".
You don't need the zu
Soon. ™ No guarantees how soon soon™ is though.
What. Why can I delete the zu?
Because just gehören means belong.
gehoeren alone suffices
The meaning is complete with or without "zu"
With 'zu' the meaning changes though.
So Flops. What if it was "my brother" instead of "my sister"?
Sure about that?
I have no idea about the declinasion there, but I say yes. >:)
What case is this in flappy?
What happened the last time you had a masculune noun in genitive, Flappy?
"declinasion" oui oui.
Technically it's dative here, not genitive, but I'd like to remind you of this conversation https://i.imgur.com/GBcrOft.png
Gehören just takes dative.
AH.
http://www.duden.de/rechtschreibung/gehoeren Shouldn't it say somewhere that it takes dative?
I SHOULD LEARN DATIVE VERBS
Yes. Meinem Bruder. But the genitive of mein Bruder would be meines Bruders.
Yeah.
Yeah. It's fine not to know them already, Flappy. You can learn them as you come across them if you want.
While it doesn't explicitly state it, you can figure it out from the example usages.
It should say it more clearly in my opinion.
@sudden panther That's a really bad way to present that though
Explicitly.
I just know "danken" and "glauben" are dative verbs because I use them too much.
Oh agreed, yeah, but eh. What can you do.
Not sure why
Anyway, Flappy, here's the next one. "The house belongs to the boss of my brother".
WOW.
Oh that's a tough one
@cold vessel You should use other dictionary as a beginner anyway :v
Base, do you want to kill me?
If you get this right flappy, we'll throw you a party
WOAH
let me rephrase that in French, that'll help
@viscid cape Such as?
It doesn't have anything new, just a bit longer so think about it a bit longer
"La maison appartient au partron de mon frère"
Flappy, remember that pinned post in #questions, of all the verbs that take the dative case? ^^
If you get this one right before 18:00, I'll give you a 🍪.
Those who give should also receive. Take this, Arrem: 🍪.
"Das Haus gehört meines Chefs meines Bruders" Wait. Is Chef also genitive?
You tell us.
which case does gehören take again
^
DAMMIT
But where is it dative though, I think I have an idea.
And is it "your" boss? "My boss of my brother"?
whom does the house belong to?
Ahh Base
"Chef" is dative and "Bruder" is gentive because technically it's the brother's house.
I wanted her to notice it without help
And oh yeah.
Your answer is correct, but your reasoning is completely wrong. 🤔
Sorry. 😄
The boss owns the house, not the brother.
AH.
but you got your reasoning swapped
nope

Well yes, but neither meines nor des.
Yes.
✅
"Das Haus gehört dem Chef des Bruders."
It's still your brother
Whose brother?
^I was actually gonna do an example like that Ninja.
let me rephrase that
So did "zugehören" and "gehören" mean the same thing?
Practically
"Das Haus gehört dem Chef meines Bruders."
Yay
🎉
3 minutes before the timer
Congratulations, you get a cookie! 🍪
Thank you for the cookie. ❤
yaaaay
Now is Arrem's turn to give a sentence
So zugehören and gehören don't mean the same thing. If something belongs to something else, you use zugehören. If someone owns something, it's gehören.
Don't confuse either of the two with dazugehören though
But you still have to make sure you carefully look at your sentences when you write them.
Also to clear something up for a sec.
It's confusing because all translate to "belong" in English. The big thing here is the difference between something belonging to something and something belonging to someone.
Someone mentioned that dict.cc didn't explicitly state the case for "gehören", which is false. https://i.imgur.com/S4T4dNE.png
jdm. and jdn. are jemandem and jemanden respectively, and are used to give hints about the case of a verb. So jdm. gehören = DAT, jdn. sehen = ACC
Oh. 🤔
Duden still didn't though
oooooooh
Yeah, and it's also worth noting for etw. that you can assume it's accusative unless: 1) it's posted with jdm. or 2) it states dative next to it.
mh?
Oki dokie.
@pine ginkgo That's very sloppy though, that information should be unambiguously stated sepparatedly
Who said he was going to give me a sentence?
Arrem did
I am quite happy I did hem right quite rapidly.
Yup, you're steadily improving.
^ Nobody should ever learn Latin.
Righto. So, Flops, the thing Ninja mentioned earlier is kinda how you should be thinking about the genitive. Break it up into pieces. First translate the sentence you have in mind without the gentive part, and then add the genitive to indicate the posession.
So if we do something She didn't read her husband's letter, you'd go for
She didn't read the letter first and then add the her husband's part, that way you won't be dealing with two cases at the same time, and eventually your brain will adapt to the genitive an you'll be able to skip the separation part. Shall we give it a try? 😄
also duden is not really what you should use as a learner
Yeah it's pretty much a native's dictionary
It states what case prepositions take though
The reason you do seperate it, is so you don't end up with a similar mistake to the one earlier, where you thought it was the brother's house rather than the boss
Sure, Arrem.
Lovely. Let's go with "She didn't read the letter." then.
"Sie hat nicht den Brief gelesen"?
Sadly no
Good. Except we have a small word order problem.
Word order?
If you emphasise nicht, then it would be correct.
So it's not wrong wrong.
^^
It works as a response to someone.
Your positioning of nicht would just negate the den Brief part, and it kinda calls for a replacement Sie hat nicht den Brief gelesen, sondern die Zeitung, for example. But what we really want is to negate the whole clause, which is why we should push the nicht as far to the end as possible. Before the gelesen, in our case, since the gelesen must come lastt.
It's just open to multiple interpretations
Would this order, with emphasis, say like "She didn't read the letter [but she read something else]"?
This way it could mean that she read something other than the letter
@cold vessel Yes, you'd expect a "but rather..."
Yeah it's "She didn't read the letter" instead of "She didn't read the letter"
As casca said though, it's fine as a response
Goodies. And now we should just add the her husband's part.
since the context carries the rest of the sentence
Oki dokie, so "sie hat den Brief ihres Mannes nicht gelesen"?
Nice Flops. Do you see a tiny typo in there, however?
No, is there one?
are you sure?
Yes.
yes
do you wanna bet
😂
Bet what?
There's something all languages do
Your horse 🐴
I don't have one
your riding club membership
uh i dunno about dat bet
It's not a typo as much as it is a slight grammatical mistake if we're looking at the sentence in its entirety.
you have to do the daniel challenge
GOD
BUT
(a tip, read what chuck is saying)
And focus on the word, Tiny mistake
Focus on the first half of the sentence
This would be a mistake in German, English, French, Italian and so on.
focus on the first half of the sentence
It's a thing most if not all western languages share
You guys are mean 😂
No we're lovely. 😛
Focus on the first half of the first half of the first half of the sentence.
It's a mistake, that wouldn't happen if you were using a phone
flapsy muss pERFEKT WErden

Huh? A capital?
exactly
And there's something you can do that kind of sounds like capital
But what if a country has three capitals, Chuck? WHAT THEN?
This is the part where she kills us.
LOL
And you have to do it in regards to your sentence
Looking at you, South Africa. 👀
but there is not adjectives, is it?
Look, Solet just did the same mistake! 😮
WAAH
"Well, This is the part where he kills us." "Hello. This is the part where I kill you." CHAPTER 9: THE PART WHERE HE KILLS YOU Achievement Unlocked: The part...
and so did I just now. 😮
i do you arrem
whoa Arrem don't make misteak
No pls I'm too young to be done. 😦
where can I put a capital letter, mmmh...
-Luna 2017
LOL
Good question, Flops.
Did you figure it out yet?
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN
so
I'd just put it in the first spot that's not capitalized.
flappsy
Where could you capitalise another word
Maybe it'll work
where do you put capital letters in german
There's only one place where you could capitalise it
Or any other language ever.
in adjectives when they replace a noun?
not any language
Nope
The sentence is fine
I was quoted ❤️
ah nouns then.
when you would you capitalize a letter
the words are fine
IT'S JUST A LETTER THAT I MUST CHANGE
So the big bang is generally accepted as the ________ of the universe
huh
smelliest sitcom
I don't get the point there, Chuck.
And they're all true
I should see my sentence again.
yeah
LMAO WHAT
Yes please do.
boom.
This sentence has no mistake.
this one does.
So what do we do at the start of a sentence?
Put our pen to paper?
^
Yes and what do we do to the VERY FIRST letter?
Flops I literally just told you the answer.
Capitlising the first letter.
YES
YOU DID
Yes. 😂
Aye.
JESUS CHRIST
DID YO UFLAPS?
"sie hat den Brief ihres Mannes nicht gelesen"
BECAUSE I AM ON COMPUTER MAYBE
Other than that, your sentence was perfectly fine. Nicely done. ❤
YOU STILL HAVE SHIFT
BUT NOW I FEEL SO DUMB OH MY GOD
I told you
It's a mistake that your phone wouldn't make
but i had fun
If we wanna be assholes we could also criticise the lack of a full-stop.
But you would
Still Flops, you're actually not messing up your genitives anymore, which is nice.
I'm so sorry Flappy
but this was just too much fun
are you sure?
https://giphy.com/gifs/1BXa2alBjrCXC flops right now
Then so are we, Flappy. ^^
So Casca. How about a sentence? 😛
Giving a sentence needs inspiration, Arrem. Let him search. 😛
Here's one to translate while we wait: "Where is Casca's inspiration?"
wooooo genitive again. Let's see if I have all correct.
vong dem Casca
LOL
Well at least, it's not that complicated. Just put an s to Casca for saying that it is his inspiration.
Less thinking out loud, more writing. Go.
Casca sein Inspiration
Preferrably something with genitive for Flopper.
ANd whoa, is it also "inspiration" in German?
Sogar das dann schreibt sie auf Deutsch.
Eh.
Meine Inspiration liegt in eurer Fröhlichkeit.
In spoken language, would you say "Cascas Inspiration" or "die Inspiration von Casca"?
Are you bullying Fläppers again?
Meine Inspiration liegt in mir selbst.
No, we're bringing her genitive bei.
by*
In spoken language, would you say "Cascas Inspiration" or "die Inspiration von Casca"?
Cascas Inspiration
Die Inspiration des Casca ist auch okay. ^^
vom Casca.
Yeah, let's say des because why not.
@cold vessel Now she's going to use 'von' everywhere instead of genitive :v
The dative + von thing is not used with names?
Mikuh, they're not bullying me. If they did I would not laugh so hard like I do now.
wow, new nickname
So, Cassiesause, sentence. When?
Arrem C. When?
Flappy 1 - 0 Arrem.
Arrem eagerly awaited Casca's sentence, as he had hoped to task Flappy with its translation.
So is that a no to my question?
Wow, that sentence. i even don't know what "eagerly" means.
@cold vessel I don't know to be honest
Zélé, Flappy.
AAAAAH.
@cold vessel Try asking on #questions
God why I love the word "zélé"
"Arrem hat eifrig Cascas Satz gewartet, als er Flappy mit seine Übersetzung zu nehmen gehofft hat." To task was really a wierd translation on dict.cc, because it was just saying "nehmen" but it's not "to task" litteraly, it is?
Impressive work, but sadly not correct. Let's go through it together. 😃
What made you choose gewartet?
Well, I thought it was the past participle of "warten" isn't it?
warten as in to fix?
Ah, it was await, woops.
holy shit, it was just adding er and boom you have erwarten
but I love that dict.cc says that warten is also correct
Warten is both to fix and to wait, but not to await.
depending on context
no
you don't know the context
dict.cc gives you the translations
but not the meanings
oh yeah, but I thought he was saying "to wait" so warten came immediatly to my mind
Maybe because in French "await" and "wait" are the same word. I don't think that it is because of French, just because I didn't see the word correctly.
is fine is fine
Then, where are the other mistakes?
To save having to scroll:
"Arrem hat eifrig Cascas Satz gewartet, als er Flappy mit seine Übersetzung zu nehmen gehofft hat."
well flappsy
Yeah, about that nehmen.
what is the subject
First of all, what would you replace gewartet with?
Erwartet?
Yep!
"Arrem hat eifrig Cascas Satz erwartet, als er Flappy mit seine Übersetzung zu nehmen gehofft hat."
After you, Solet.
Solet is ded.
Arrem, so er?
is there?
god, didn't see that mit, we use dative with mit right?
how did you write it
yeah, there is
What do you mean @whole rapids ?
if you didn't see it
I thought it was accusative at first
but forgot that mit is a dative preposition
so, it's "seiner Übersetzung"
nice!
what was the original sentence again?
Arrem eagerly awaited Casca's sentence, as he had hoped to task Flappy with its translation.
look at the verbs
No.
wat
wat.
what is nehmen in english, flapssy
Yeah, that was my question about "to task" I said it when I posted it.
To task <with> -> To instruct.
Nehmen is to take and that stuff, I know.
But the translation on dict.cc was...vague.
Charger, Flappy (to task).
But the others are nouns, Solet.
no
yes
Then tell me what "to task" is plox. Don't tell me you just have to put a prefix on nehmen, please.
You're definitely blind.
lookup task en de

No you don't need the first one.
Sachbezogen?
Because I am "fluent" in English.
German-French also isn't complete
Task, that's all Base.
I should really improve >lookup. Some of those translations are really shitty. 🤔
mayeb I should have written "to task"
Oh, I see. When you look up a verb you should write it like "to task", yeah.
@sudden panther What does it use?
Just pulls the things straight from dcc. But dcc also searches for things containing the word, thus returning sachbezogen as a result, which has nothing to do with 'to task'.
So I'm thinking about making it display more info. Source and translation.
AH.
Yeah, that sounds good, Flappy.
Okay, so it's "zu beauftragen" rather than "zu nehmen".
No, not really. I think we're just web scraping.

Noice flaps. Yes, nehmen makes no sense in this context.
What a twist.
Truly.
Anyone wants to give me a sentence? 😏
Kryptik needs one too. 😏
"My name is Base and I love you all."
^
Der kranker Mann ging im Krankenhaus
Ich heiße Base und ich habe euch alle gerne.
Never heard that
Der kranker Mann?
Great job.
yeah fix it
I guess
Der kranke Mann ging ins Krankenhaus, während der gesunde Mann, um gesund zu sein, lernte viel Deutsch.
word order base
Oooo.
It has to be "um gesund zu sein" at the end?
Der kranke Mann ging ins Krankenhaus, während der gesunde Mann viel Deutsch lernte, um gesund zu sein.
no
Noice.
Perfect on first try. 😏
can I get a sentence too?
You want English to German? Oder Deutsch nach Englisch?
Vielleicht sollte ich Deutsch nach Englisch mal versuchen
You can fix this.
Almost there! 👍
- Flasche Wein is perfectly okay, you don't need the mit here.
- What's the gender of the grandma, again? 😄
Danke!
In other news, I find it extremely amusing to run literature through vong converter.
Wow, good work.
Shouldn't it be 'Hier sind ein Kuchen und eine Flasche mit Wein...?
There's something like a vong-converter? Die Welt ist schlecht.
Does vong mean anything 😄
._.
Kryptik, vong is the word you'd use to signalize that you want to be lynched
Regarding your question: Both ist and sind sound fine in that sentence for my ears. I'd opt for sind however
Thank you 😄
@opal sequoia I meant the link to Flap's story
not done
