i dont know german well, but i think that du is when you are talking to the person directly, like „du bist schön”, but when talking about dir is when talking „to you” like „was geht es dir”

I've imagined that the difference between 'ich' und 'mir' was like the difference between 'I' and 'me'. So then 'du' and 'dir' would be similar. 'Du' is 'I' in the second person, and 'dir' is 'me' in the second person. But I could be wrong.
