4 years to be able to get B2 certificate, an additional year to be able to read novels without a dictionary. But the first two years I wasted doing only Duolingo so I could have gotten there a lot faster if I had used other methods.

Yes. It's not completely useless, but there are far better things you could be doing.

1. Your progress in a language is strongly correlated to the amount of time you spend on the language. The 15 minutes a day/do the bare minimum to maintain a streak thing that Duolingo has going isn't going to cut it.

2. You get good at the skills you practice. So the skill you are practicing with Duolingo is translating sentences, which isn't really a skill you use when actually using a language.

3. Compared to doing flashcards, you're barely learning any words with Duolingo. If you need 500 words for A1 and 1000 for A2, 2000 for B1 (these are estimates) , you can get to an A1 vocabulary in a month with flashcards doing 15 new words per day, versus with Duolingo you learn maybe 5 per lesson (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dAjO4iZxyV8LzE0c8MStydbhUbofiycRQQVjUC_dLi8) which would take you triple the time. Especially since they include each verb conjugation as a separate word.

4. It doesn't even make up for the fewer number of words by teaching you the grammar. There are no grammar explanations in Duolingo so you're left feeling lost. Much better to read/watch/listen to grammar explanations and then read or watch shows/videos at your level to see examples of the grammar in context. Plus by consuming input (videos/text) your exposure to the words and sentence structures are going to be orders of magnitude higher than what you would get through Duolingo.

5. There is no speaking with Duolingo. Their pronunciation checkers just have you guessing until the AI likes the sound you made with 0 explanation of the pronunciation, and you're not having to think in the language like you would in a real conversation.

If I were to use Duolingo, I would use it solely as a jumping-off point to start getting a feel for the very basics of the language while I am also doing flashcards and watching videos in simple German. I would stop once it starts feeling slow (your vocabulary will very quickly start eclipsing what Duolingo has you doing, after as little as 2 weeks).

it also doesn't really encourage any customization of your language learning journey. Motivation is sooo important with a language because you have to do it every day, and if it becomes a chore to practice because you're not doing something enjoyable for you then you're going to struggle being able to fill the ~hour each day you need to be setting aside for language learning.
As an added motivation killer, since progress with Duolingo is so slow, you're not going to see the fluency improvements you're hoping for and that also makes it hard to stick with it because you don't feel you're getting anywhere.

of course, language learning isn't always gong to be a type 1 fun, but it shouldn't be so painful you're hating every moment of it

like if on one day you would rather keep watching an hour of comprehensible input than stop and read a graded reader that's perfectly fine

or if you would rather watch a video that is slightly too hard for you and look up the words because the video is funny, rather than follow the principles of comprehensible input and only stick to beginner videos that you find a little dry, you are free to do that.

stuff like that with regards to customization

and Duolingo has no room for that kind playing around to find things you like

you can see this is the same sound as the ee in "free"

and in german we see that come up for the letters "ie"

One thing is that American English doesn't have a whole lot of rounded vowels, which are the vowels on the right of each group in the IPA chart

so like all the ones I have circled here in red are rounded vowels:

but fortunately, in order to get the rounded vowel sound all you have to do is just make the unrounded sound (the one on the left), keep everything in your mouth in the exact same place while you make that sound, and then just literally round your lips
