Depends on the person really, but I find that Anki gets me to the point where I'll remember a word for a few weeks, and it won't necessarily become active vocabulary. To get past that line, I find that actually using the word helps out the most, whether it's engaging with content that has it, or producing your own content that has it (e.g., writing or speaking).
