Had the chance to speak with a native during German class today. They pulled me into another room and had a quick chat to see how we would do when speaking and simulating a conversation. Apart from the intergenerational program and speaking to a neighbour, this was the first time I’ve really been put on the spot with questions and it definitely helped me discover my weaknesses and what I can improve. I recommend speaking with a native in German because it helps for sure

I'm mostly thinking about the fact that ~90% of the people around me spoke Bavarian better than Hochdeutsch and a big part couldn't speak Hochdeutsch without mixing it with Bavarian (which is hard to notice for me). I also had native speakers correcting my texts multiple time and they weren't really helpful.

But you should definitely speak with some native speakers. I'm not trying to say one group (native/not native) is better than the other. It just depends on the person and they are not all helpful in the same way.

I was looking into courses in TU Wien at Masters level and was wondering how theoretical the Bachelors/Masters courses tend to be there. I have heard that a TU is like a mix between a Fachhochschule and a Universität?

I am considering doing a Masters in CS there but have been put off by some German university courses which often place heavy emphasis on things like complex analysis, which wasn't the case at my university in Ireland. My university was also more practically oriented in classes like Algorithms & Data Structures for example

However theoretical you make them tbh, since apart from a few mandatory courses, your modules are up to you. I did Software Enginneering, with logic and databases as my two main modules of choice, so mine was a bit more in that direction. But if you pick idk software Enginneering and distributed computing then you could realistically finish the whole thing without really seeing too many formulas, apart from one formal methods class which is mandatory for all and also not a super big hurdle imo.
