Er macht einen Kuchen - He is making a cake
Er hat einen Kuchen gemacht - He has made a cake
Er sagt, er hätte einen Kuchen gemacht (aber ich bezweifle es) - He said, he would have made a cake (but i doubt that)
Soo many tenses/moods/aspects/whatever 😐
@cinder python every language has them but you don't even think about it
right right, I get that aspect
That's not really true
I still often get the have been-form wrong 😅
Might be true for most IE languages though
@cinder python to be quite honest, non-IE langauges are even harder, for their own reasons.
chinese,japanese,arabic,swahili, whatever
all have their own peculirarities which make them hard
not to be nit-picky but russian is an IE-language
So is Hindi xD
Finnish, Hungarian, Albanian and Baske aren't though
and those are super hard
Albanian is
ah yes
i had in mind that it is an isolated language but not that it could still be IE ^^
"Ich hatte gemacht" would be Pqpf
There is no distinction between Perfekt and Plusquamperfekt in the past Konjunktiv II
there is no way of stating that something had happened before something in the past in the K II without using prepostions like bevor, nachdem aso.
hello
ok, where can i make a request for a resource?
the gender is called neuter, not neutral
also that 1) 2) part is not very clear 🤔 (is it an AND or an OR gate?)
apart from that, nice work

I always just thought of Neutr. As neutral, cuz it just kinda makes sense as its neither masc. Or fem.
...
a website to download ebooks (many of which in epub form) was posted some time ago. You might want to check the resource list in the pinned messages and see if it's there (or if there's anything else of the sort)
Thanks. I've looked into that and it's not really what I meant but thank you anyways.
declension* :P
looks good. What did you use to make it?
it would mean that it neither has an article nor hasn't one. I don't know if it's the term I would sue but it does sound pretty "out of scope" to me
@sand marten @carmine canopy there are miscellaneious words that require either "strong, mixed, or weak" endings that aren't easily predicted
to include them all in the chart would make it so much more complicated
words like jeder, etwas, alle, viel, derselbe etc
you just have to learn those on your own ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Unchanged article? 🤔 Got it.

Does anyone have the PDF for A series of unfortunate events? I downloaded one, not realizing it was only the first chapter and then I couldn't find a complete version online ;(
if so, tag me too
Maybe not :(
Pretty simple, but I was looking for a simple explanation of which pronoun to use and I found one: https://www.lsa.umich.edu/german/hmr/grammatik/Basic_Chart.html
I really don't feel like reweriting my whole reddit post so here ya go
"Hi everyone, I'm a current high school student who is very enthusiastic about German! Currently, I am at an Intermediate to Advanced level in French and am taking it in school. However, I've always wanted to learn German(my school doesn't offer it.) What would be the best and most in-depth way to do this? I don't have time in my schedule to take a class or the money to go abroad. Please give me some good online program or book recommendations, thank you!"

This is my way to trying to tame the difficult subject of cases and genders in German. Step by step instructions. Practice. A bit of humor. Not for beginning...
The "Schenke and Seago - Basic German" link in the resource document is dead 😮
For now.
Well, the site is up but the link 404s, so I'm not sure it will be coming back
Thanks!

I know this has been mentioned before, but it seems that a lot of people join us every few days, so just to let other people know: Duolingo's TinyCards app is quite nice.
It's a cute looking flashcard app where you can also add images and voice, and there's also a training part after reviewing the cards where you're asked questions. And there are already premade Duolingo German flashcards with all the words from the app :) it's really good for tests and such where you have to memorize a set of words.
Info about how to form superlatives
This is probably an FAQ, but does anyone know of a bescherelle equivalent for German?
i think german conjugation is regular enough to not require anything of the sort
if you just need conjugation tables, you can look at conjugator.reverso.net
help conj
>[verb|conj] <verb> [lang=german]
Get the conjugation for a <verb> in <lang>.

I'm solely providing the commands, it's up to you to use them ;)
but I forget when i need it
or most often I don't want to clutter the chat or be seen forgetting always the same things so I just hop into my browser :P

FYI - Whoever is responsible for keeping the Curated List up to date
The first link for the Schenke and Seago Basic German workbook is broken, it should be changed to http://www.readersstuffz.com/downloads/ebooks/Language Books/German/German - Basic.pdf
Also, where do I make suggestions for the music list? I used the Edit function on the wiki page but it doesn't appear that anything happened (not sure if it gets sent to a "waiting for approval" bucket somewhere or not)
@carmine canopy ^ would you/another Mod be the person to ask?
probably @sleek holly
I'll take care of it in a few minutes
❤ Danke schön
Does anyone know any good basic german textbooks in french? I need to get a new one :P
There is only a Spotify Playlist that was not made by a user here though
We could start a YouTube Playlist though
It will just be a bit difficult to find videos that are available both in- and outside of Germany.
ah yeah... I got a bit mixed up I think on the music piece, I was referring to the music list linked from the /r/German FAQs
I was wondering if you guys had any reccomendations on how to get started on learning German.
No problem!
be aware that the very first link is dead and is about to be updated
you can scroll up in this channel just a bit for the correct link
gerne
@ruby cobalt I fixed the broken link
I noticed there's a 2nd version of that book: https://www.amazon.com/Basic-German-Grammar-Workbook-Workbooks-ebook/dp/B01EAHZJUO/ref=mt_kindle?_encoding=UTF8&me=
Anyone got a clue how different they are?
Danke @carmine canopy
Only mods can update the list?
Yes
Herzlichen Dank to all you guys who put these resources together - I feel like I'm learning more from the German - Basic workbook than I learned in all my time on Duolingo... definitely right up my alley for my learning style 👍
Well, most of those were submitted by you guys. ❤ We just try to organize them in one place. Although I've fallen a bit behind lately.
mein Freund suchte nach Kinderbücher um Deutsch zu üben. Kennt jemand irgendwo, wo man sie kostenfrei kriegen kann?

My Lemon Cake recipe
Actually, don't use TinyCards.
It's quite bad :/ very slow and you /have/ to do stupid exercises based on your own flashcards
I just kinda regret making over 50 flashcards and having to rewrite them on another app
Basically
stimmt - I hated my (very shortlived) experience with tinycards
It's not good for revision
It's terrible
I kinda liked it at first @ruby cobalt
But just because of the design
Because most flashcards apps look like they were made in 2011 and never updated
Oh and yeah
It's really difficult to write flashcards on that thing
tbh, while old, Anki still seems to be one of the best
Not intuitive at all, you always have to tap on the cards to write something (why tho), you have to scroll right and left on the screen /just a little bit/ to write in the front and back of the card; since the app is slow it takes a long while for the word to appear on the card after you typed it, so you think that maybe you didn't type on the card first, so you rewrite the word but, oh, look at that, you did write the word the first try and now you have the same word two times on the same card! Good luck deleting only the last one. Then the whole thing of changing keyboard language from your native language to German or otherwise be prepared to rewrite every word since autocorrect will do its job.
@ruby cobalt I'll try it, everyone talks about it
Go for a frequency-based vocab list (top 1000 or something) and try to create a deck where the definition of the word is a picture of the thing rather than a translation. Easier to retain for most
Where is a good article to learn the 4 cases?
pinned messages 👀
Hey guys quick question - should I work on the Basic German grammar book then move on to the Intermediate German grammar book after I'm finished? The contents seem to overlap a bit
Repetition isn't bad at all for language. If you like the format, I say go for it.
thanks!

Does anyone have a list of suffixes that without exception have a specific gender?
I think there is one in "Hammer's Grammar Guide" in one of the first pages
this page has seperate sections for words that are always a certain gender and words that are usuallya certain gender based on endings, word groups etc.:
https://www.thoughtco.com/masculine-feminine-or-nueter-in-german-4068442
please ignore the fact that they have a spelling error in the title, their resources are usually quite useful, i think

Does anyone know of a resource for pronunciation? Specifically: ö v. u v. ü? They all sound the same to me.
you could try youtube, I'm sure many tried to explain that
also you could compare the audio from different words on forvo
and listen to the audio for the various German vowels as provided on wikipedia
I've seen people compare u and ü, but not all three. I'll look into forvo. Thanks !

about forvo, it might be best to hear words that have all those sounds you're interested in. I can't think of anything that has all three though 🤔
It seems like ä sometimes gets pronounced like "ey" (as in, "hey" or a Spanish "e") - is this just the nature of the consonants that follow the ä making it sound different, while the vowel is formed the same every time regardless?
hmm actually come to think of it, and yea maybe it's just poor hearing of the vowel sound by itself, but it seems like it ranges from
"eh" as in t[e]n, b[e]d, l[e]nd (Männer, hätte) to "ey" as in h[ey], th[ey], f[ai]r (fähren, bär)

Does anyone have any good resource on verbs with prepositions?
the best I've got is reverso context. Whenever I'm unsure of a preposition I write the verb and look for sentences that specify the kind of info I want to specify, then look at the prep they use
Thanks. That was exactly the kind of thing I was looking for.
Is it ok if I share scans?
Of papers my teacher gave me? They're a lot but I don't want to be spammy
you could make a shared folder on google drive/dropbox/similar and share a link to that instead
Oh, that makes sense, good idea
Anyone know where to watch Disney movies in German?

anyone got any lgbtq+ vocab stuff?
nope, couldn't find anything online either. I'm happy to translate stuff for you though
Ok so like, this might go into very strong non-standard/neologistic territory, but i guess that's the case for lgbtq+ stuff in general isn't it..
do you know if there's like any talk on neutral pronouns?
I only know of "Es"
So I guess that discussion hasn't really been had with German too much yet?
I've never really heard it, sorry
is ok
don't use "Es" for non-binary people - it makes them more an object than a person.
and we do have that discussion, it is just that we already have genders in our language and itroducing a different pronoun into a language is not that easy then.
I feel this is a pretty common theme in Indo-European languages...
There's often no room for gender neutrality... And you just gotta... Be very forceful and have like standardisation reforms to get neutrality.
yeah
In Norway, there's a very huge debate currently with this, Norwegian is mostly neutral, but that's because we've been trying to make it so for decades.
(there's like no gendered work titles anymore basically)
we have a discussion about endings of professions though - for example:
a teacher is a Lehrer
a female teacher is a Lehrerin
if you want to say both at the same time you can write it as one of these:
Lehrer*in
LehrerIn
Lehrer_in
the first one is a bit better imo, as the * is meant to include trans*- and non-binary people as well
There's a long distance to go with this stuff it seems.
@unkempt sinew Are you familiar with what pronouns nb people generally favour? Because like, one can discuss what could be done all day, but in practice I feel it might be more interesting to know what the communities naturally have gone towards.
i don't really know tbh :/ - i don't personally know any non-binary people myself, but i could do some digging and try to find something if you give me a minute
Maybe not the place for this discussion but it feels really awkward to me for anyone to expect an entire language to change in order to make an accomodation for an excrutiatingly small subsect of people. Being trans isn't a choice, but being offended most definitely is. Generally, in languages with in-built genders, there's a common vernacular that people use and 99.999% of people, trans or otherwise, don't get offended by it because that's just the way the langauge is. Don't mean to spark some debate on this, just my unpopular opinion on the matter.
oki
Well you know, Anubis, you can be like the majority then and just ignore trans/nb people's feelings.
Yep, go ahead and get defensive. I'm not going to reply here because as I said this isn't the place. I stand by what I said: being offended is a choice
I'm not getting defensive.
Very passive aggressive
I'm just making a statement.
There's nothing stopping you.
Anyway, I was just asking for some lgbtq+ vocab, not for a discussion on your political views on it.
maybe we should stop making accusations towards anybody 👀
I don't think he would be automatically set himself to ignore the feeling of two entire categories just by saying that taking offense at a language matter is a matter of choice 🤔
sorry to weigh in. I dislike it when misunderstandings like these can bring on unneeded arguments
i just don't know where we got the whole "offense" thing form here?
I was just looking for some words that aren't easy to look up. And of course, as expected, I get faced with prejudice and bigotry. Always so typical that someone would make an ignorant comment when you bring up lgbtq+ topics.
We can't all be your cis straight traditionally feminine/masculine Housewife and Workinghusband, Anubis.
Prejudice and bigotry 😩 and the choice to be offended has been made.
absolutely absurd
You're the one getting offended.
would you two stop right now?
You literally created a problem from nowhere. There was no conflict before.
i'm just gonna leave this group
The blog you sent me has actually a lot of pretty good lists I just noticed.
that was 0x1's link though ^^

Goddamn, I just wanted to share a cool language learning app and I had to deal with ~discourse~ on the last place I expected it. I don't want to start another argument, I just want to apologize on behalf of transgender people for you-know-who's behaviour. Entitlement is not nice, nor is it playing the victim. You're here to learn a language, not to be offended because it doesn't suit you. Cultural diversity, baby.
Anyways, here's the really cool app I talked about. It's called Lingvista. Works like Duolingo but it's cleaner and has grammar explanations (though they're very brief). The system is very nice and you actually learn new vocabulary because they're used in context and you're not "penalised" if you don't know it. The goal is to learn 100 words a day.
And I'll probably send those sheets I talked about a long time ago tomorrow, sorry D:
I'm considering dropping Duolingo in favour of Lingvist
It's hard to let go of my streak though
I know the pain
But I've grown to dislike duo
I always feel like I never get to learn anything
It's more like a game
Same, I don't really have fun with it anymore
Then there's the weird sentences.
Back they they were fun but now, I'm tired of having to repeat exercises when it wasn't even my fault.
Yes
Thanks for reminding of it @proper musk
I'll try to keep doing both for now, maybe soon I'll just drop duolingo
I have an over 1300 days streak though
It's hard
But frankly it's the only thing that makes me come back
It's useless though
It'd be useful if I were studying multiple languages, but I'm not
How so?
Sorry, I never understood all those mechanics behind duo. I still have no reaction when that bird gives me lingots or whatever
I just mean the only reason why someone would have such long streak should be learning multiple languages
But I'm just learning German
There are better ways to brush up I think
Ohh
Yeah definitely
Wait
With a 1300 days strike, have you finished the tree?
Duo is morbidly long sometimes
Yeah I finished the German tree and the reverse one in the first year
There's a reverse one? Fancy
And one year?? Holy
Nah
You can leave duo at this point
You're right
One thing I like to do is watch a movie/series with English audio and German subtitles
I'm quite privileged on that aspect tho
I have a friend from the USA who didn't mind sharing his Netflix account with me
Otherwise my parents would never allow me that, even though it's not really that expensive and it would help the whole family learn German :/
I still feel guilty tho D:
I mean, he's the one paying for it
And idk I feel bad
Even though he knows it's just because I thought it'd be good for me to learn the language
And he really likes to talk about Star Trek
BUT STILL I FEEL BAD U KNOW
@viscid quartz Did you find it useful to do the reverse tree?
He'll be the one coming to Germany actually, for studies, and I promised to buy him ramen because he loves it :P
I'm curious about that too
@cinder python On the one hand the exercises are more challenging, but on the other the tree is smaller, so I'm not sure the advantage is that significant
That sounds like the perfect opportunity @proper musk 😸
@proper musk Netflix with German subtitles? That's one of my favourite things to do when it comes to learning 😄
Buuut sometimes if you switch to German audio they might not be the very same with subtitles so be careful with that ^^
Yup I've noticed that
So I prefer to stick with just one of them
For now my focus is to get used to everyday speech and read long texts, so subtitles it is.
Later for audio I'll just watch German original movies/series
At least that's how I do it :P
Good plan! 😄
Danke :)
I think there is an app that's a bit like this?
But it was about news, let me see if I can find it
This one
I didn't know about this app, need to try it!
I know this isn't german specific, but it's help me kinda plan my learning a bit more and thought it'd be a good thing for new learners to see (in reference to most common words)
That sounds about right
I saw that
I have another post which kind of breaks down languages so they dont seem so huge
once you learn these like 600 words you are ready for conversation
I know ~1500 words and I can't have conversations
You really know 1500 words? 🤔
I have no idea how many words I know 🤔 Probably fewer than that though
henbri knows B-level number of words
@open girder Quite the opposite, my vocab is awful. It's my grammar that's approaching B
what do you all think is the best resource for prepostions and learning the different cases?
Oh this is a good question
Learn German every day for three months, advance one full language level and get a 100% refund for the tuition. Use my Voucher Code MARATHON2 to get 4.50 EUR...
I'm not sure I understand how this is going to work but it looks worth it 😽
95% of people will probably miss one or more classes and lose the refund 👀
Lots of people will indeed, but if you are sure you won't miss any it's a pretty good deal 😸

Just to be clear
50 cents for 90 classes
And if you miss one you dont get your 50 cents?
I'm a lil confused here
No, its 300 bucks if you miss a class
That's for the half marathon, almost 600 for the full one
any chance anyone still has a copy of the Hueber Große Übungsbuch? I was about halfway through it and lost both my progress and my files after screwing up a repartition like a noob. now the file isn't available anymore
I was able to find the file elsewhere on the internet. it was one of those situations though where you have to click through several different ad pages in order to get the download link. I'm guessing the file linked to in the resources doc was taken down due to copyright reasons, plus I don't really know of a good way to host it myself. it does still exist though. pm me if you're interested in a copy
Hey guys! I was wondering if anyone knew good apps to learn a languages (not particularly German, just languages in general) and that may be a little easier than duolingo. Something a kid might use
@ocean sail memrise isn't half bad
Might have been posted here already, but Lingvist is a good site für vocabulary.
is it useful ?
I’m going to type out all my resources that I bought and be posting them on here so that you all can benefit from them. I’ll only be posting in german though. It will most likely be Microsoft word documents.
I’m posting this here so that I can hold myself accountable. Hopefully you guys can also push / motivate me. I’d appreciate it
I will have 1,000 German sentences by the end of the day typed. I will post them soon. I am at 598.
what level are you?
absolute beginner
but I have books that I think everybody could benefit from. I would say more of a beginner actually. I can read and have basic conversation.
@tiny abyss
DuoLingo vs MemRise?
Hello.
lingvist
So i am coming straight outta General and I wanted to ask if anyone here knows some websites, documents or books that are maybe even for free which I could use to teach some German to my friends?
Ist Lingvist besser?
nicht unbedingt aber mir gefällt es besser
still waitin ^^ @flint epoch
@tiny abyss I posted the link about 20 min ago in writing and learning
Lemme see if I can post it here on my phone

My link is mostly grammar books in Germanic languages
but should be good enough to start
Wow, is there a way I can save that onto my personal google drive??? I’m not very tech savvy, I. Think I need to do this from home on the computer
@untold tusk Hammer is one of the most comprehensive books. You can find it in the resources.
In the pinned messages in this channel there is a link to a Google Doc which has a link to it and more resources.
Thanks
Is "Hammer" too in depth? I found myself getting stuck and confused a few times @open girder
it's a grammar book. It's supposed to be used for reference, not as a thing to read through (a textbook/coursebook)
Yeah, Hammer is basically what you want to use to look up some technical rule of grammar, or a literary concept (like weird sentence structures and stuff), or anything that another source doesn't really cover. But if you are learning about cases, conjugation, any basic stuff that you'd expect to find in a course, there's always a better resource for that specific purpose. Most of the other grammar books in #resources are better for that.
The pdfs of Basic/Intermediate German and Modern Grammar all have exercises you can do as well, afaik. So that's a plus. (:
i suggest dreyer - schmitt 's yellow book
@misty valve gets it, thanks man!
i showed that to a German Language Teacher he found lots of weirdy mistakes on that book. dunno if its possible or not but that was way weird
hey everyone, I'm looking for handsouts or exercises on possesive adjectives (nominative and accusative), does anyone have anything they could share? I've a test on Saturday x_x
here is a page that has tons of handouts and practice stuff, maybe you can find something:
looks like they got something for you:
THANKS SO MUCH ❤

that does happen sometimes
I wouldnt expect anyone to comment on it regardless
I try to find the right place to post my request but it seems that it's not the good place
I ask people to find a good place and someone told me to post on Discord but it doesn't work
Can you recommend a good place to join motivated people to practice?
discord

all I want is lingvist not being premium ;-;

Is Tinycards (the flashcards application from Duolingo) efficient?
No
@soft depot it doesn't work, it has a question feature but it's really retarded, don't bother
Oh well
You waste more time creating the flashcards than using them
Should I rather go to anki then?
^I agree, Tinycards aren't that efficient
Yup Anki is nice
Ok then, thank you^^
Anki ist ausgezeichnet
How many of you would recommend Duolingo?
0 / 10 Serious Language Learners recommen Duo
@pine glade when you're really at the beginning of the language, I'd recommend it to try out. Once you're past A2 level (or even A1+) Duo is child's play and you don't really learn from it much
u can always learn new words with that
Yeah enjoy having to grind two weeks to get to words you'll actually use. And then enjoy not being able to use them because all you learned in those weeks was how to win duolingo

I just have to add these two:

"Weshalb? - Why?"
Those who use LingQ, plz. Is there a way to find lessons in order? I only get the ones people liked, but I can't see them in order
Yes@arctic gull there is
i'd appreciate if you were more... specific lol
like whether I can see the whole series or if there are any "official" ones
@arctic gull
click that and you can activate what i have open (course library)
also whats your lingq name, ill friend you
does anyone know a good resource to explain the 4 cases? (nominative, dative, genitiv, and accusative)
I need one too
@slow flume Do you have a specific course to recommend?
To be honest I've been through almost all so I don't know for sure. But there is one I really like @cinder python
I'll find it later
@cinder python Der Chemie Reporter
@slow flume Thanks! ^^
@carmine canopy If you're brand new to the language you could try Duolingo, but some here consider it a bad source. Sauerstoff ^^ recommends LingQ, which I'm using now, but I think it's only good if you get premium which is like $10 a month
I use duolingo. It is nice for vocabulary.
Yea it's a good start, I'm thinking of going back to Duo just to improve with different sites
oh thanks lol
May be a silly question, but does anyone know of any resources for an A1-A2 to practice speaking? Duolingo doesn't cut it for me unfortunately!

guys i would like to get a book for A1 level, any suggestions ?
@alpine leaf Memrise works for me than Duolingo
It handles speaking too??
No
You may listen via Podcast on iPhone
If that helps!
And speaking, not sure! But the Memrise speaks their words in German and translates after
You might wanna check that out 😉
I made a vocab list for shopping that anyone else can steal if they wish to: https://germanlearningresources.blogspot.de/2018/01/vocabulary-for-shopping_9.html
If you~re interested, I am going to be regularly making themed vocabulary lists and posting them on that blog (as I need a more contexual vocabulary)
A blog for learning German. Themed vocabulary lists, short grammar lessons, etc.
get role Level B
Oh Danke
@carmine canopy Sorry though, I can't see you as B1 though. Your word order is way too off and sometimes I don't even understand what you mean, that's why I think you're still A, then you're your own judge. 🤔
Ok ich werde jemanden mehr hier fragen für die opinion zu erstellen
ich stimme Flops zu. Du musst mehr über deine Grammatik üben.

I don't think the admins care about that ...
You really don't seem B though, sorry to say

anyone gotta resource for remembering german grammar?
what kind?
verb conjunctuation mostly
trick №1 is to use it a whole lot
like a WHOLE lot
xd i try
ah maybe not verb conjunctiaon
more like dein, sein, ihr, sie, Sie
and how to use those in sentences and what to change in a sentence to match the,
them*
basically anything with sentence structure.
that is haaarrrrdd stuuuuff
i'll give you an example, like, i dont know if i should say fur mich for, for me, or something else
yeah just use it a lot
for specific things you can sometimes come up with tricks, but I don't think there is anything general
example would help
it stinks because i dont know exactly what i dont know, so its hard to find stuff on it
lol...
i would say for "i got to my house", "ich gehe zu meine hause"
but im positive thats wrong
This conversation is better held in #questions but can you explain your thought process of why you would write it that way?
Could anyone recomend me a german podcast? I'm interested in games, science, technology. Got any recomendations?
vielen dank
👌
@nova fiber have a look at the links in the r/German wiki:
Do try Coffee Break German
Yeah I remember that being fun. I can't remember if I actually ended up memorizing anything from it but it sure let me engage into the language more

is linvist kinda like anki but more guided?
oops sorry yeah
I was trying it out for german and I liked it a bit more than duolingo cause it's like you gotta try before you see any options
though obviously comes with a cost but tbh if I am going to devote time I don't want to be a year down the road and like man if I had found an app to actually challenge me more then I would be so much better off
i mean
Its a really good way to learn vocabulary. It goes by frequency so you learn important words first
The only issue is that some of it can get business oriented for some reason.. but either way its great to learn vocabulary in context.
Also, dont buy the premium yet, they just introduced it and its not worth it
50 new words a day is already more than enough, and you need to be getting vocab from multiple sources anyways
yeah i'll prob just combine duo and lingvist for now
ATM i'm learning german and japenese and not sure how well it'll go but so far since i'm taking time out of my day it's kinda nice to go through both lists
and they're very distinct
and gonna go see what resources library has
ı tried to it ı think if you dont start kanji youll be ok @rustic mica
i tried to do it*
What you mean
kanji requires you to study in a daily basis
I already did this learn Japanese thing to learn hiragana and katakana
But yeah, kanji is daunting
But I'd mostly want to speak anyway
hiragana katakana is enough for a lot of time
i reccomend memrise for hiragana and katakana even ıf you learned all of them ıts a good way of practicing ı learned them ın 2 days with memrise
What are some good Youtube channels with subtitles? I just found Learn German with Anja, it looks pretty good
Does anybody use LingQ Premium here?
Thanks Nemoses!
German with Jenny is quite good as well
and German with Ania
Thanks :)
- German with Jenny and Easy German, the ones mentioned above, are the ones I use lately. Plus Coffee Break German podcasts (and I subscribed to their Reading Club as well, for free, on the radiolingua site)
and of course Duolingo and Memrise
Donttrusttherabbit is pretty cool too
after realizing how difficult Lückentexte are for me, I did some searching and finally came up with this generator from Goethe Institut. It's exactly what I was looking for, and depending on how you source your text and which settings you choose, it's even more difficult than the Lückentexte I've seen on practice B2 exams, making it a perfect way to study for them. http://www.goethe.de/lhr/prj/usg/deindex.htm
brilliant
I'm looking for good resources so I can start learning German by myself. I'm not gonna start learning with a teacher until next month, so what is a good starting point if I know nothing about German language?
I prefer books or things that I can read over videos
Check out the link in the channel topic, Gail.
Try the pdf for Basic German. It's probably a good place to start.
And the worksheets and information sheets at http://www.nthuleen.com/teach/grammar.html are a good way to start practicing.
But there are a lot of cool resources in that list, so just have a browse.
Yeah, having so many resources just made me confused so I thought that it'd be better to ask 😅
Thanks 😀
Do you guys know any good places I can get some B1-ish level poems in german?
poems aren't usually graded 🤔
although!
I found this. It might be lower than B1 since they're intended for children, but they're poems and they're for native children so who knows
um Grammatik zu lernen
Ja
To learn grammar, the best way is a combination of reading text books (or similar) and writing/speaking a lot and getting corrections.
Thank you
While I was researching for stuff, I found this link, may be useful for those who struggle with verbs+prepositions/cases

B2-C1 learners, check out the new book I uploaded. It's the second part of the best grammar book - Grammatik Aktiv.
Oh my god I love you
I was about to buy it
I got the first one while i was in germany and its great
Is the first one posted above?
@brazen ledge Yes, in the search box just put “from: foxxerl in: resources” if you type out foxxerl’s name just click it and it’ll give you her id
i’d paste the link directly but i’m on mobile and i can’t, sadly
@carmine canopy Thank you!
Thanks!
You're welcome. Pray to your slavic queen of resources.
hey guys, I'm an absolute beginner at german learning prodominantly from duolingo. One big flaw I find with duolingo is it doesn't really explain the grammatical rules very well, and just shows you examples until you figure it out yourself. Is there a site you guys would recommend that would explain these things? The sorts of things I have problems with are when die/das/der change depending on where the object is in a sentence e.g. changing to den, or eine to einen.
nthuleen? pretty sure they have an exercise for accusative and dative stuff
cool, I'll check it out, thanks
Another good alternative/complement to Duolingo would be Lingvist in my opinion. It gives you 50 new words to learn per day on the free version, and has grammar tips and explanations (during your exercises, but can also be accessed on its own insie the app).
To be fair, most language apps focus more on vocabulary than anything else. Nthuleen is also a good site but I haven't used it a lot yet. I mostly listen to the Coffee Break German podcast, do Duolingo, Memrise (very limited on the free version though), and Lingvist for vocab, as well as read the pdfs provided on this channel
I only started learning / practising German very seriously earlier this month (around 20 days now on Duolingo, which I use as a marker to know how long I've been at it), and I can say I am set on most basic grammar rules and it's starting to become more natural for me. A lot of people on this server have been really helpful as well

But it's worth pointing out that most information can be found simply by Googling it.
Or just browse all the links in the resources list until you find the relevant topics.
(You'll find there isn't really one good source for learning all grammar for all levels)
Idk if this counts as a resource but this book called Sadako is relatively easy to read if you're around B1. It's based on the real life Sadako which I'm sure you know the story
i don't
one, what’s Sadako
two, what’s b1
a, b, c are the CEFR levels of proficiency in foreign languages
least to most proficient
c is the lowest i presume?
the opposite
ah ok

ok, thanks
Maybe a dumb question, but can I download e-books from Libgen without getting a ticket when I'm in Germany?
They started releasing their videos in german again
That’s beautiful ❤
You can but use a vpn and use a public network like a cafe or a library
whats a good site to learn the prepositions

Thank you
yes
Website for German radio station operated by Italian government for broadcasting in a German speaking region (Südtirol, borders with Austria). For the news, they speak really slowly. Like seriously. Really nice for listening IMO because it's easier to hear each word.

Here is a German text for those who want to improve their reading skills and want to build up their vocabulary
Around 2500-3000 words for beginners
I've used some python scripts to put them together, so that's why they're in txt format and some characters may be wrong. The source uses "r n" for "m" often (IDK why), you can see that in gender part of nouns.
That is so hard to read.
Also it's definitely just an auto-conversion
Many unfixed typoes
Gluck for Glück
Spat3 for Spaß
and then also Spai0e 🤣
this is essentially unusable as is, unfortunately 😦
It is a very meme program.

ok yeah it is
@thorn trench I hate to inform you of this, but those txts (at least your "nouns" one) are full of misspellings (most notably missing umlauts 👀) from the python script, and also misformatted, so essentially unusable to learn. 😦

@karmic flare here is something similar, but just for verbs: https://www.memrise.com/course/1552402/500-verbs-sorted-by-frequency-from-tv/
500 Verbs sorted by frequency from subtitles extracted from TV shows and films. Original list, where these verbs were found, is here: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/User:Matthias_Buchmeier/German_frequency_list-1-5000
All strong verbs are given with their past tense and past participle to be typed out, but you can just write the infinitive if you want to.
memrise has many more similar courses
Thanks @open girder I’m working on the 5000 words by frequency, so this verb list would be a good complement
Wow, when I open it, it is one word per line. I am sorry, I'll try to fix it as much as I can 😌
I'm pretty sure that Windows' regular editor is just bad and removes formatting lines
looks like this for me
Putting it to .doc file may work.
there's still some things which might require work, though
and yeah
or PDF
hmm
Notepad only recognizes \r\n as a line separator. If you have just \n, Notepad will tell you to fok yourself. WordPad works if you don't have anything else.

Hey guys i was wondering, does anyone know of a website that has news articles that are not terribly hard to understand in german? My old teacher showed us one website but i dont remember it. I am looking for relatively short articles (or just anything) to read, no longer than 1 page. I am planning to start reading daily so i dont get fucked in my exams 😄
http://www.nachrichtenleicht.de/ This website is pretty good from what I've heard. Maybe that's the one you had in mind?
http://www.dw.com/de/deutsch-lernen/nachrichten/s-8030 Here's another one where they read the news out for you slowly

Not slow but news for kiddos
Thanks to both of you, the first one Chuck linked was the one my teacher showed me i think! 😃 I will take a look at all the links tho. Thanks a lot!
You're welcome!
https://www.pons.de/daten/pdf/Praxis-Grammatik/04_Verben_mit_Dativ-_und_Akkusativobjekt.pdf could be useful, I know I'll be using it often (tells you which verbs are with dativ and which with akkusativ)

Hey I wanna ask, other than ..., weil es zu heiß und feucht draußen ist., can you use ..., weil es draußen zu heiß und feucht ist.?
Does the position of draußen make the sense of a sentence different?
