Considering the huge number of nouns there is, how do you remember a noun's gender? is it just really from repetitive practice/use or is there patterns for a lot of them, like with the "chen" thing you mentioned when it comes to neuter words?

More or less, there's currently a holiday session marathon so we have pretty frequent sessions, but all sessions are run by volunteers, so we can't guarantee that they'll happen regularly in general. There are often fun things to do though.

Yes, unfortunately in general there is no rule. There are minor things such as certain suffixes, as you've said, that tell you which gender a noun will be, and you can memorize that, but for something like Hund, Katze or Tor, there's really no way to know other than to memorize it.

Some extra more advanced information:
It's a bit hard since some words change form when you add suffixes to them, but in general, something is a suffix if you can chop it off and still get a valid word. das Mädchen comes from an older word die Magd, so you still have a word if you chop off the -chen. Whereas if you chop of the chen from Kuchen, you end up with Ku which means nothing on its own.

Präsens (Present Tense)
When you use a verb in a sentence (or clause), you have to conjugate it (change the form) to match the subject of the sentence (or clause).

For example, in English, we write I eat but he/she eats. The verb has a different ending! The concept is the same in German, except German has more endings.

The first thing you need to know in order to conjugate verbs is: which ending fits which subject? Here is a simple verb “trinken” (to drink) as an example:

sie trinken / Sie trinken
(Note: the conjugation for sie (they) and Sie (formal you) is always the same)

Vowel/Stem Changes
There are a few variations and exceptions, but the most important is vowel changes (also called stem changes). Some verbs get a vowel change, which only affects the du and er/sie/es forms of the verb. (However, modal verbs and wissen have their own special pattern, which also has a vowel change in the ich form.)

Example: ich schlafe, du schläfst
