lmao
Just like they have upper and lower austria and theyre both in the north

because elevation, no?
Yea
Upper can means older layer in geology
where you get those question which don't show here in the chat? 😄
Can you type it Horko?
Grueezi
Ahh okay
Grüezi?
ok, I thought that I don't hear people talking 😄
I have never even heard someone in Germany say Grüezi yet, what region was that again
(Grüezi is relatively formal, not for friends)
Hi Hecke, Bye Hecke
Interesting
Auf wiedersehen
achso lel
I heard it everywhere in Krems when I visited ex
that map is cursed
Warum
adjüüs is what you say when you sneeze too
is 'einen schönen Tag noch' greeting?
I mean, if I say it, is it weird if I add tschüss after it?
It's a farewell.
btw, in Berlin you can hear tschüssi as well, don't know exact spelling
with "noch" it becomes a farewell
tschö, bis Morgen/bis Montag
Lan wieso gönnt mir keiner die native rolle
auf Wiedersehen is considered a little formal is it not? i was afk for a sec so idk if you already said that
I mean, cashiers say that, I reply, and then I'm conditioned to say proper bye when I'm exiting 🤣
@boreal zealot Grüsungen
yeah I have only ever heard employees at Penny tell me Auf Wiedersehen 😆
The speech can be super formal but they dont even look at your face
Bis zum nächsten Mal
They just pass your items at light speed and say their scripted greeting
Tschüssikowski (jokey)
schauen == sehen
sorry, for which you said it's used when it's less than hour or so
if anybody approaches me with that imma be friend
And maybe worth mentioning Wiederhören.
Can we say noice in Germany xD
@wary atlas kannst du mir pls die native rolle geben?
you can as a meme @boreal zealot
there is a few other greetings that are less common that are also farewells in Bavaria just like Servus, I can't believe I really just had to look up Verabschiedung to remember the English word farewell
beautiful denglisch there
@woven nacelle noice
yeah lmao
I made a mistake, repeat:
is 'einen schönen Tag noch' goodbye?
I mean, if I say it, is it weird if I add tschüss after it?
or - should I use only one of them or it doesn't matter?
super very goodbye
aaa, so they are fine if they come toghether
Bis bald super duper
muss ich hier jz noch nen test bestehen um native zu sein oder was lol
Which one to use if I want to come off as the coolest person ever?
people also say really commonly "schönen Tag dir noch", sometimes even employees have said that to me and it's technically not the most formal
@woven nacelle No but here is a lesson so it's not the right place to ask about it.
You can DM me about it.
ay sry
It was really close to Hamburg during my year abroad
I know some stuff about bavaria because I was an exchange student there but i did not live there for super long
oh please, can you repeat that thing about times, eg which is for sooner?
you mentioned that you will use some for short, like in an hour or so
Hey I have a general question, before speaking a sentence do you convert it from your language to german?
I don't
You
@boreal zealot Unrelated questions should generally go in #questions
what's the difference between wie gehts and was geht? I think the latter is for was geht ab right?
Also "ich bin gut" is never the correct way to respond to that question, I see that mistake a lot from beginners.
ugh, better stop using it
they are asking the same thing but with "was geht" it's more like "what's up" instead of "how are you"
i mean not asking the same but
they are greetings
yeah yeah just like in english
I watched on dark that some people said "mir gehts"....is that means its going ok ?
I decline learning this
yup, decline, declension
deklination
Note that dative doesn't get covered until week 5 so it's fine to just memorize these directly without understanding the case.
you can also answer with gut danke / nicht so gut, right?
"geht so", "passt"...
solala
Prima
what's the deal with squeezing a 'ja' in the sentence? Like, mir gehts ja gut or something, I think I heard it somewhere
👀WAT
Are people expected to talk about their current situation when you ask wie geht's or is it just a way to start the conversation?
I should've wiped my previous German knowledge before restarting XD
Another common thing is "Und dir so?" i've gotten so used to it that i almost always say it like that
yeah well close to it and also I see it online quite a bit
yes please
small
smol
did you just assume us to be ants
LMAO
dunno why i'm enjoying this basic lesson
Lol
hecke bin bald aufm zug vlt kann ich dann zuhören
@wary atlas ❤️
@wary atlas you da best bruh
im Zug* @storm turret
Danke base und tiktik
can we doownload this
good: gut, sehr gut, super, prima, ausgezeichnet
ok: ok, solala OR mir gehts.
bad: schlecht, nicht so gut, schrecklich
yeah
what the hell is solala
thanks man
all g
Solala sounds like just so so in English
appreciate you guys teaching everyone
wait, so so isn't common? 👀
This is a new one to me, never heard anyone say solala
they must be feeling good then
same
in this pic it says it's so la-la
I have 👀
sounds like french oh la la
Yeah I mean people who I know just say "naja es geht" if it's like so-so
ah shoot, I'm required to provide consistency
i am nowhere near that confident to do that
What does naja mean?
how do you end these small talks
What does naja mean?
@spice bluff
Well
ABANDONED convo
ich muss gehen 😄
@unreal coral @peak scaffold @toxic schooner ❤️
So it's like, "Well, it goes"?
it's a lot easier to feel than to directly translate
sounds like its a vietnamese word
oh no
shots fired
doesnt sound german at all
Naja kinda like also
Danke

what doesn't @dense nest
@sharp rune Falscher C-Rolle-Verdiener. Du bist hierhin reingekommen, um etwas auf deinem echten Niveau zu lernen, oder ?
the previous word she said
yeah true, otherwise it'd have been a narrow comfort zone
Yay !!
yes move on
Hecke there's literally a slide number on top
seems like your 3h estimate was on the spot 😄
i will need to sleep eventually 😔
same ade
ahh
do you swim?
du stinkst 😌
Do you eat bread
stinkst du, syro?
Lol
I hate how schwimmst has a single vowel this language is impossible
duolingo lessons kinda quirky
naja, muss nicht mal fragen
die antwort ist offensichtlich nein 😌
no ferch, try gvprtskvni
Welche
whow
mir kam das nicht super offensichtlich rüber aber das glaub ich dir syro
wuerd ich ned
syro stinkt
is there a way to disable that ba-dum sound when someone joins/leaves?
where from you?
yep in notification settings
user settings -> notifications -> scroll down
awesome thanks sun & syro
wohin fliegst du?
@boreal zealot also the verb still comes in second place - "where from/whence come you" you might analyze it as
oh
woher kommst du?
her/hin are also sometimes in principle synonymous unless you are nit-picky, however for woher/wohin it's not the case at all, they are not interchangeable
also like "hinein" would be kinda literary but "herein" is still said
wer, wen, wem
hard
whats that noise
wen/wem are the same as whom (which is outdated in english)
wer bist du? who are you - nominativ
whomst
Lol wat @outer vector
wen siehst du?
Wen/r?
'a bit' kinda oversimplifies it
jk tho nothing's easy here
👍
I actually like how wer/wen/wem teaches you more about dative/accusative (it makes you pay attention to what's happening in the sentence)
wieso sind es so viele fragewörter für das 😩
how so?
wieso
wieso - why, how so, how come
ohh TIL
wann - when
wenn - when
wann sie kommen.... - when they are coming
wenn sie kommen... - IF they are coming
wann auch immer
you understood right, all good 🙂
or 'immer wenn'
immer wenn is what
if you say "wenn" for example it can't refer to "at what o'clock", only "wann" can do that
wenn is a conditional when - when x, than y
uhhh
Wenn actually reminds me of like, coding logic (from this convo)
"When x = 5, then do this"
warum, wieso, weshalb - why
weshalb=deshalb?
oh now it makes sense that deshalb looks similar
(it's different i kno)
(weshalb is the question, deshalb is the reason)
oh
I don't know if it's just me but "warum" feels a little bit more demanding than "wieso", however I guess it also depends on the situation and tone of voice and all that jazz
yeah
which is how come and which how so?
wie kommt
warum - standard why
wieso - how come/how so
weshalb - for what reason
wie kommst doesn't exist in that sense fercho
good explanation
too many options
i know
i've never heard of weshalb
know the others exist but warum is a good cover-all for 'why?' for a beginner
btw, on topic of weshalb-deshalb, there's warum-darum
but I was told that darum is extremely impolite (probably as single word answer, I doubt it's impolite if you do full sentence, right?)
"weshalb" I believe is either more formal/literary, one of the two, can't remember. But also it can be used in combo with "deshalb"
Lmao
so you wouldn't say darum is impolite per se?
@burnt scaffold darum
I thought so 😄
changing the 'w' to 'd' in those question words sorta makes sense sometimes 🤔
wieso? dieso
no worries
du musst mal 😄
ich, wenn ich mal muss
🤣
wenn die Lehrerin nicht in 15 Minuten wiederkommt...
Lmao atomic joined then left
Nein. Hier ist kein Zoom-Vortrag
wie heist du be like what called you
hey the crinkling sounds are worse rn for some reason
or something like that
@boreal zealot heißt
the crinkle is louder and the hork is quieter than before :(
What are you called i believe
i bims
heisst
ye i havent got a german keyboard on my pc @wary atlas
Is it okay to write w/ two ss's? Like would that bug German speakers?
@boreal zealot Then heisst. But not heist.
you can write two s bro
ok cool
not louder, just more frequent, probably more head movement?
what
alt gr + s works for me too
Hallo, ich heiße Jhu und ich komme aus England
yeah
👀 I just heard things that I didn't know
memorizing alt codes just to type in the language you're learning 😩
Looks everyone is b lvl here
is it a complete beginner class?
I was just following that guys lead xD
wait maybe it's 255
THE ENGLISH?

Everyone b1
nooo
@storm turret what state g?
romans were not too original when naming that island
woher kommst du/ wo kommst du her
ich komme aus algerien
@toxic schooner I'm between B1 and B2 in some stuff and converse in bunch of situation, but I skipped a bunch of grammar, so, repeating it 😄
is the point B what that her emphasizes in that sentence?
@green pebble wow
🇩🇿
as the speaker, when you say "her", it implies that a person is coming towards you or to you, in your direction @peak scaffold
aesthetically pleasing
Hecke du bist nicht zu laut ich kann nicht höre dich
das ist die "flag" von algerien
oh yeah so it adds that little sense over there, cool
now is better with sound
ich studiere Buchhaltung
Ich studiere Informatik. Ich arbeite nicht, aber ich bin Student.
Ich studiere information science and libraries und ich arbeite "as data analyst in Generali"
Ich studiere Biochemie
Ich studiere nicht aber ich bin ein Programmierer
Ich studiere maschinenbau
What languages do you use, eyes?
i don't know why i specified being a uni student after saying i study at uni
@spice bluff not the nerd talk now, bud
do i just say ich arbeite data analyst or am i missing "as" data analyst somewhere
Ich heisse hecke, ich komme aus England und Litauen und studiere gerade Physik
sorry lol
engineering
@boreal zealot ich arbeite als Datenanalyst
data is plural? 👀
was ist maschinenbau
@exotic wasp
Mechanical engineering
hahaha, in english too?
@toxic schooner danke
plurals in german are epic
Id say its uncountable in english, not plural
oder Mein Name ist...
ich heiss/ich arbeit/ich studier
you could count it but lets not go there XD
als = as
Ich arbeite als Programmierer (is that correct?)
how do i say "for" who i work, or like "in"? am i making sense?
bei?
thanks
ich arbeite bei siemens/tschibo/rewe
ty
when you say bei you like the company
bei for a company name but für for a person, right?
bei siemens für Marko
how do i say marko is a ****
we dont do that here
Ich bin Nate, und hab mich bisher für kein bestimmtes Studium entschieden, aber ich zieh momentan sehr in Betracht BWL eventuell zu studieren, genau wie die anderen deutschen Studenten die nicht genau wissen was die überhaupt machen wollen
just curious
this and 14 more 😄
heck i'm sorry to point it out again but some sounds are kind of covering your voice
Ich - me
Schwester - sister
Bruder - brother
Vater - father
Mutter - Mother
Sister/brother in law?
hold
stief is for not in law but half 🙂
What if you clone yourself would that be ich or dein zwilling
well technically mir/mich can in some sense also mean "I" so
like in "mir geht es gut" = "I am doing well", not "Me is doing well"
Grossvater - grandfather
Grossmutter - grandmother
Onkel - Uncle
Tante - Aunt
Cousin - Cousin (male)
Cousine - Cousin (female)
gross father
Schwager - BIL
Schwaegerin - SIL
👍
Is vater und mutter too formal? or is it like causally used
also yes "ich" can mean "me"
"das bin ich" = "that's me"
so hecke wasn't actually wrong @exotic wasp
mama, mami, mutti
papa
vati, papa
The I/me thing is weird thing that English has. Often when you use a pronoun by itself in English, you use the "object" form of the pronoun. Whereas most languages use the "subject" form.
In case that wasn't explained.
^^
schwiegersohn - son in law
schwiegertochter - daughter in law
yeah, what base said. i didn't want to interrupt
@green pebble dunno if it was corrected in vc but stief isn't half. that's halb. stief is step
Enkel - grandchild (boy)
Enkelin - grandchild (girl)
@tardy prawn i mean using ich mir oder mich depends on the sentence
Nichte - Niece
Neffe - Nephew
Nichte was a great philosopher
yes, it does, but the meaning lies more in the grammar than it does in a literal linguistic translation @exotic wasp
That'd be great
danke
@storm turret all good, I messed up english terms, I was thinking right 😄 too early for me it seems 🤣
haha I can not remember the last time I actually needed to say Väter, let alone in English Dads
geschwister - siblings
Maybe your friends' dads?> haha I can not remember the last time I actually needed to say Väter, let alone in English Dads
@tardy prawn
it crackles insanely now
Ja
It sort of sounds like the mic getting jostled
YES
it was like you were talking into a plastic glass while squeezing it
wat no
lol your voice echoes now
no crackles, but a little echo (not bad, better)
but no crackles
lol your voice echoes now
@tardy prawn but its better
yes i agree
ye
or poor noise cancelling
if its mic from iphone earbuds, it makes noises when it touches surfaces
wie viele geschwister - position 0
Wie viele väter
Die zucker väter
Zuckervaeter
whats that
Sugar is zucker
Oh really hahah
zuckerburg = sugar castle
Zwilling - twin
oh confused burg and berg
@boreal zealot
Its berg
Also michael Schumacher is schuh macher
Ich habe drei schwestern, und wir sind zwei paare zwillinge
How would you say "I'm the oldest sibling" or something?
how would you say if you have two more twins, eg when someone has triplets or more?
drilling
I didn't know that (the gender and sentence structure)! Ty for the info
would you say Ich habe zwei Drillinge oder?
How would you say "I'm the oldest sibling" or something?
@spice bluff
alteste
altest?
dann vierling und dann quintuplet usw mit den lateinischen begriffen
dunno whats doch and zahlt das auch
we're still stuck on previous slide 😄
doch doch?
Ich höre nicht
exit and reenter
comparatives often get an unlaut added.
ältere Schwester älteste Schwester
Gibt es kein anderes Wort für nicht identische Zwillinge?
sorry, I'm slow, exit the voice completely and reenter, so, close it and join again
ook
"Do you have a sister?" "Yes, I have a sister"
Ich wohne mit meine eltern un meine drei schwester, wir sind zwei paare zwillinge
zweieiige Zwillinge - anders
eineiige Zwillinge - gleich
sorry, I'm slow, exit the voice completely and reenter, so, close it and join again
@green pebble
Danke
Nein, 2+2
how do i say any, has du "any" Geschwister?
Ich habe 11 cousinen
hast du ueberhaupt geschwister? - do you have any siblings whatsoever
would jeder work at all?
ueberhaupt is like any?
or hast du irgenwelche geschwistwer?
So no specific word for any?
and irgenwelche?
irgendwelche is a specific any
Youre so patient hecke i admire that
this ^
Ty for spending the extra time answering side questions/elaborating on stuff
what do you call ex-relatives like ex-wife, ex-sister in law? You also use ex?
Eine frage
Gibt es unterricht morgen auch?... wenn ja dann wann?.....Gleich zeit?
@boreal zealot Ich habe auch...
tomorrow when? 👀
Ich habe zwei schwarzen Kater
PM?
Pm?
wew super late

5:12 am
aaa otherwise I'd say it's short notice 😄
listening to B/C level German instead of sleeping for work? Me likey
So are sessions gonna be weekly or only on weekends?
but it definitely is different if you're just making private lesson public 🙂
@tawdry gorge my lessons at uni are focusing more on word order so i figure i would clarify on the thing i was confused about earlier - the V1 is in 2nd position in declarative sentences, but it is in 1st position in question sentences, is that correct?
Friday morning german time?
danke :)
Sorry gonna get to sleep now it’s like 4am for me but I wanted to see how these lessons are run by you guys and you do a good Job from what I saw @tawdry gorge
yeah
um, isn't it like 1 am german time for those at friday
no worries, thank you so much for your input, it was loads of fun ♥️
@tardy prawn thanks for the corrections and colloquial inputs left n right

Nah I‘m goin to bed man I just remembered I had to tell my friend when I am gonna Chat with him (we practice German/English together like tandem partners basically, he‘s from Germany) : D @outer vector

alrighty that makes sense, thanks heckie
me when i don't have opportunities to speak german casually

How do you remember der das die😩
@boreal zealot okay
:o We're halfway down the scroll thing Hecke
Sie heißen Hex und Lynx 😄
Ich benutze Duo nicht. Duo benutze mich für Werbungen. Edit: Wrong word :^)
Nicht so hilfreich
Mein Mitbewohner betracht es, eine Katze zu bekommen

Er hat vielleicht keine Idee für den Namen
what does welche hobbys gibt es means
Meine
das Handwerk 🙂
so mag is for concept?
Ich mag es, Adverbien zu benutzen

ich mag es, mein pferd zu besuchen
@tawdry gorge
Kann wir diese satz ohne es benutzen?

is the last sentence correct? :3
the gender mistake, always
Was bedeutet zocke?
zocke = gaming
will there be more to learn or this is the end of lesson
they said here, but leo says it's gambling?
Zocken - gaming
so I might misunderstood
thank you for lesson, see ya around
@green pebble oh ok
Ich hab gedacht dass computerspiele wort fur 'gaming' ist
danke!
computerspielen vielleicht?
kann auch sein xdd
Throwing computers
How do you say gamble in german, just out of curiosity?
zocken :)
ich spiele Klavier barfuß

@lean plume @boreal zealot suggestion is to write bot commands you need for yourself in #botchannel and if you want to explain something to someone else then it's fine to invoke bot wherever you are
Especially lessons are tricky since we others might think there's some mews about lessons :)
ping session 32 Casual lesson on modal verbs Können, Dürfen, and Mögen is starting now

<@&526087863339843585>
Casual lesson on modal verbs Können, Dürfen, and Mögen is starting now
|| What are modal verbs? ||
What level is this lesson for? Is it about basic conjugation/construction, or more about use cases and slightly advanced stuff?
Hi bulli!
@finite raven B & C.
oof
@finite raven "Casual lesson on modal verbs Können, Dürfen, and Mögen is starting now"
im here to just listen then. i probably wont get it
thats me all the time
Ich auch
I saw that. Just not sure what B/C level of modal verbs is 🤔
I would never have thought that this topic would be B & C
i find declension tables relaxing, hecke 😌
Yeah, hecke said she's doing more obscure stuff like stuff about modal verbs you usually don't learn as normal grammar.
Like uncommon usages, etc.
well, stick around anyways 🙂
i signed up to feel popular when i get pinged for lessons
@tiny dragon exactly. Why i was confused.
oh i c
Ich kann nur A-level verstehen 😆
But you will have to join to know the exact content.
the german here is made out of words
A
A 😦
A
whats a verb
I know können but whats a modal verb
Kind of familar with how they affect sentence order
Familiar but still curious
ok well we can lower the difficulty to something like A-B then since most people here are A and i dont think blu is coming
familiar but still curious
English is my native language
me too
(i was joking)
Im fine with listening to a beginner-oriented lesson
and i still dunno modal verb lol
Are you streaming?
ya
The idea is that they’re often combined with other verbs ☝️
I can't view it.
but its just a winter picture
bridge with water and snow on trees lol
the stream isnt relevant
relax? nothing about german is relaxing
ENTSPANNEN SIE!!!!
Thats sweet
Oh she's being nice. German is NOT a smooth learning experience
Konnen

I am familiar with all of them, except for dürfen
ue
Duerfen?

Sorry can you repeat the ones were going over today
Ich ||kann|| kein Deutsch schreiben

It’s easier than it seems at first glance. No need to stress 👌
Im confused already v.v
konnte ist Präteritum, oder?
Ich konnte sie gestern nicht besuchen - ||I couldn't visit her yesterday||
whenevre i hear Präteritum or see the word, i think of how base says it. LOL
Ich koennte sie morgen besuchen - || I could visit her yesterday||
idk. he just says it . i just hear his voice in my head
|| Konnte is could not and könnte is could? ||
He can swim
Er kann schwimmen
Er kann schwimmen
Er kann schwmmen
|| Konnte is could not and könnte is could? ||
@glossy cedar
No
Er kann schwimmen 😆
@glossy cedar konnte is past, könnte is subjunctive
@glossy cedar Konnte is past form of können. Könnte is the subjunctive form of können. They are unfortunately both “could” in English.
wats subjunctive?
schwimmen ist schwer 😆
“When i was young, i could do it” = konnte
“I’m not sure if I could do that” = könnte
Koennen vs Koennten
wats subjunctive?
@true adder its used in my native language and i have absolutely no idea v-v
Ich kann nicht buchstabieren 😛
Oh that makes sense chicken tiktik
Ich habe schon model-verben lernen. Es ist gut. Nicht schnell, nicht langsam.
@true adder
The differnce between “I will” and “I would”, i guess? I’m not sure if that helps. Would is a subjunctive. It’s expressing like possibility, i think?
i'm surprised i don't know the P2 for können
Wir haben meinen Onkel nicht besuchen koennen Perfekt
Wir konnten meinen Onkel nicht besuchen Praeteritum
Fur mich, Pefekt is mehr einfach.
oh oh ok
Can you give an example?

Compound tenses + subordinate clauses: modal verb comes after the infinitive of the main verb
Sie wird morgen nicht kommen koennen - ||she wont be able to come tomorrow||
Obwohl ich gestern abend rausgehen durfte,... - ||Although last night I was allowed to go out,....||
Obwohl ich ihn morgen werde besuchen koennen,... - ||Although I'll be able to visit him tomorrow, ...||
