@wary atlas i really dont know where to start on this server i just started learning german could you please help?
How to get started
The simplest way to learn German is to find topics you don’t understand yet and search for explanations of them. This list provides you with a guide for which topics to learn if you are completely new to German. Type the topic into Google (or YouTube) and start learning!
Introduction
1: Alphabet (especially ä, ü, ö and ß)
2: Basic greetings (hello, goodbye, etc.)
Part 1 - Simple Sentence
1: Noun gender & plurals
2: Nominative case (What are cases?)
3: Nominative pronouns (I, you, he, she, etc.)
4: Verbs in present tense
5: Definite/indefinite articles
6: Accusative case (for nouns)
7: Accusative pronouns
8: Word order of simple sentences
9: How to ask questions
Tips
- Always learn the gender of a noun when you learn a new noun
- Learn to use a translation dictionary (e.g. dict.cc, leo.org)
- Use
>faq resourcesto see our list of German learning resources - For listening and pronunciation practice, try watching movies or videos (incl. YouTube)
- You can listen to pronunciation for words on websites like dict.cc, forvo.com, and others
- Practice writing sentences every day (and asking people to correct them)
- Ask as many questions as possible
- Don’t be scared to make mistakes!!!! If you don’t let yourself make mistakes, you will never be able to learn German
This is the best place to start.
When you have questions about German, you can ask them in #questions.
If you just want to chat with people in German, you can use any of the General Discussion channels.
If you want to post some of your writing to be corrected, you can put it in a Google Doc and post it in #writing.
You can use >sub translation or >sub writing to be pinged when the weekly translation or writing prompts are posted.
@wary atlas could i get someone to help me?
@boreal zealot With what?
just learning in general
Oh, like a tutor/mentor?
We don't have any system in place on the server for that. We generally learn as a group effort, so we recommend for people to use #questions when they need help.
But you're welcome to get to know people in the server and try to meet some study partners.
ok
@wary atlas where did you get the bot?
It's created by the admin @boreal zealot
oh
gute nacht @everyone
hey guys how do I start taking lessons from here ? I don't understand , can anyone help me?
Yes. Currently no lessons are being held. They are only held when someone decides to host them, at which point the host will post an announcement in this channel about the upcoming lesson.
Ok , danke!
@boreal zealot Type >ex beginner in #botchannel
Does this mean would you like to order? "»Befehlen der Herr?«"
Is it just antiquated?
@hollow narwhal Wrong channel.
Uuuh, can you give me the Chapter/roughly where it is on the page? Then I'll check as soon as I'm home :> @hollow narwhal
»Was haben Sie?«
I think this is all the context you need
Yeah, it's either austrian or antiquated (or both) for 'What's your order?'
I didn't know if it was standard or because the waiter was being flippant
Thanks Milly
is not old, is regional. Read Woyzeck by Büchner or read Terezia Mora's speach on Georg Büchner prise (but is on german). there are a lot of germans speaking like this "Trax, Er ist ein guter Mensch. Was braucht er? Er braucht das? Gut."
I never met one talking like that. I think it's lyrical or old
the language used in Woyzeck is not a commonly spoken one
nobody would ever talk like that but it could very well be from an older book
Terezia Mora writes like this in Das Ungeheuer, and she won the Georg Buchner Prise last year. So maybe is very gehoben, or maybe is just she.
its a mixture of both probably
It's "gehobene Sprache". very very heavy forms of it.
Ich weiß nicht, warum mir gerade Kacheln einfielen. Ich hätte ebensogut sagen können: Limousiner Email oder Satsumavasen oder andere Dinge, die ich nur aus den Museen und Ausstellungen kenne.
Email? Was? Dieses Buch war im 1918 erst mal gescheiben. Und haben die Leute da Emails?
Oesterreich war ahead of the time
welches buch?
Leo Perultz: Zwichen neun und neun
no idea but i have no clue what satsumavasen is supposed to be either so xD

They’re taking about Emaille/enamel :>
No problemo

Hello how speaks German?
Sehr progressiv war die Menschen in den fruehen 1900s. Die Maenner tragen Rock (cross dressing), und war es ganz normal:
Es kam mir wirklich nicht zum Bewußtsein, daß ich gefesselt war, auch nicht, als ich mir den Rock abbürstete.
Nah, Rock is here referring to 'Gehrock' which is a jacket :>
Email is enamel, now rock is a jacket. This novel is one big let down after another
When are the lessons usually?
The lessons schedule is decided by whoever is hosting the lessons. Currently we have no one volunteering to hold lessons.
but you could volunteer
I wouldn't mind doing something like group reading & discussing articles from https://www.nachrichtenleicht.de, but I wouldn't describe myself as a proficient German speaker.
aka it'll depend a lot on someone who knows wtf they're doing to show up
@dusty wyvern Questions should be asked in #questions
@wary atlas danke
Any available lessons at the moment?
Ahhh not in #announcements ?
#announcements is used for server related changes and news as opposed to letting people know when we host lessons
hey, can you take a look on what i've done? 😄
and tell me the mistakes
please
it's not much, im beginner
Hallo
@cosmic hare if this happens I'd love to participate (not a fluent speaker either but it sounds interesting)
Great! I just ordered a new microphone, will be here Thursday. That website has new articles every Friday I think, so maybe then? Maybe Saturday?
Who would be interested in doing some group reading this weekend?
What kind of level would it be? E.g. Beginner, Intermediate?
I'm thinking we read an article from here:
https://www.nachrichtenleicht.de/
Then discuss it. Level would likely just depend on the level of whoever shows
Okay, yeah, I'm interested 😃
Ok! Great!
I might show up, don't guarantee it though
What day/ time? I'm in the UK.
What time?
11AM PST?
https://www.nachrichtenleicht.de/wald-braende-in-russland.2046.de.html?dram:article_id=455817
^ We'll start with this one since it's short but still has some good vocab
Could anyone teach me German
When we are discussing?
I'd prefer 12AM, I've just woken up
"sehr viel Wald und sehr wenige Menschen" nice way of saying it
@boreal zealot I need it too
Guys, is there any online good courses for learning?
Like with normal, rules, step by step from A1 level
I don't think you can get that kind of thing from any one online course. I think it's better to just get a list of topics and work through each one yourself.
You can use a text book or other similar thing to get an idea for what order to learn topics.

@wary atlas thank you so much!!
Np. Glad to help. Feel free to ask in #questions if you get stuck on something. @boreal zealot
@wary atlas ok!! Appreciated:)
@untold dove @cosmic hare Yeah if that's okay, 12am is better for me too, cause something just came up.

Hello everyone. I'm planning to start doing some German sessions in the near future, if anyone is interested. I'm just going to post a poll here that you all can vote on to give me an idea of what kind of lessons you would like to see. You can select as many options as you want.
JX#2702 asks: What kind of session do you prefer?
1⃣: A2 Reading
2⃣: B1 Reading
3⃣: B2+ Reading
4⃣: A1 Grammar
5⃣: A2 Grammar
6⃣: B1 Grammar
Btw just as a note for the sake of convenience, I'm not going to ping people for the poll so if anyone has any questions or wants to discuss anything about sessions, ping me in #beginner-german or #general-2 so people can get a chance to read the above messages.
<@&526087868079144961>
Hallo zusammen! We're going to have a Level A reading session at 6pm CET today (about 10 hours from now), so feel free to come along if you want to join. And you are welcome to join even if you're not Level A. :D
And if you want to join the Reading group to get pings, please go to #botchannel and type >sub Reading. There is also AdvancedReading (for B2+ reading only) and Grammar (for grammar lessons). Feel free to join those too, if you haven't already!
And don't worry if you're interested in the other sessions types. We will also do some other types of sessions in future, but I can only hold one at a time, so please have patience. 😄
On a related note: if there are any eager members of the community interested in running sessions, or thinking about getting into it, feel free to DM me to discuss it or get help planning. We're always happy to have more members of the community running sessions and I'm very happy to help people get started!

Pandas geboren
Was bedeutet ...
China
China ist ein großes Land in Asien. In China leben über 1 Milliarde Menschen, also über 1.000 Millionen. Damit ist China weltweit das Land mit den meisten Einwohnern. Die Hauptstadt von China heißt Peking. Die meisten Menschen in China sprechen Chinesisch. Es gibt aber auch noch viele andere Sprachen. China hat auch eine sehr starke Wirtschaft. Das Land verkauft seine Produkte in viele Länder auf der Welt.
@robust osprey Do you want to read and translate?
This is an A1 suitable session, so feel free to join if you want.

<@&581851964007251968>
Hallo Leute. Today we'll do a B2+ reading session. It will be at 5pm GMT/UTC. That's about 7 hours from now. We'll be reading part of a short story. Anyone is welcome to listen, but beginners probably won't have the option to read today.
awesome :)
yay
yaaay
that time might be bad but i hope it won't
You're going to hold a session tomorrow as well right Basementality?
Probably not.
Probably next Friday or Saturday is the next time.
We will be reading out loud and translating. Do you mean if we will ask questions and explain stuff in German? I prefer English personally, because I don't like to risk making explanations harder to understand by the language difficulties.
(I suck at explaining stuff in German)
Oh, do you mean next week? In that case, I'm not sure yet. I think I will do at least 1 Level A grammar session, but I'm not sure if I'll do 2 sessions or what they will be.
Maybe continuing today's short story, depending on how it goes.
Add 7 hours to Bobby's post time frosty
In 2 hours.
<@&581851964007251968>

Hey everyone! Today at 6pm UTC/GMT we're going to have a Level A (beginner) reading session. Everyone who wants to join is welcome though. ❤
I will be not here oh damnn
I am unable to see the Reading channel. Is the #voice-chat group used for this?
Thanks @wary atlas
how does the session look like?
damn I can only be here for like 30m
That's right when I go into work 😭
@carmine hazel The reading sessions are usually like this: I'll provide a text, and each person reads a few sentences in German and then translates it to English, taking turns. And we can discuss anything which comes up, such as explaining grammar, vocab, cultural contexts, etc.
Can always call in sick Billy
@quiet ferry You're welcome to attend even if you are a beginner.
No, in UTC +0.
do you have roommates base? how do you do your lessons in the dead of night lol
No I don't.
I have some neighbours but they're like, you know, people who are being loud any time and don't care about it, so I don't feel bad if I disturb them now and then.
2 hours left for lesson for you ?
Yes.
Damn I wold love to join reading but I will be busy at that time
No problem. Whoever wants to join future sessions, especially if you've found the recent times difficult to attend, make sure you fill out the pinned survey to help me (and others) decide what times to run sessions. 🤗
Who's teaching the lesson
It's not really a teaching lesson. I'm hosting it and we'll be reading some texts.
Ahh okay
when will it start

damn right girl
anyone have any suggestions for someone like me who has absolutely no will to learn German but wants to know it?
No, the methods for learning are the same regardless of whether you want to do it or not. The only difference is, if you don't want to do it, it's extremely difficult and for many people, not really possible.
So my advice would rather be: find a reason to want to do it, or just find a hobby you actually enjoy.
i'll probably give up, 6 years and only a basic understanding and no use for it if i learned it
this would make it nearly 7 years
Already 6 years? Perhaps you should have already developed a decent amount of German by now, or at least enough to get by okayishly. Try immersing yourself in German without English for a bit, and see how much you can intake during those sessions, just chat here and ask questions when you run into a hurdle. I have a few courses & sources I can recommend too
@plucky wave what are your sources
i really don't want to give up but my will power is close to nothing
so i'll take anything and see if it works
I use Memrise as I find it easy to try learning large amounts of vocabulary there, they have their own official set of courses you can take along with many user made courses you can browse around to keep expanding your vocab, there's also the Easy German series, I'd recommend giving their episodes watches on their YT channel, Deutsche Welle also has its own course called Nico's Weg that I'd like to try out, seems neat. German With Jenny and German with Anja have plenty of good videos on German. If you've been studying for around 6 years I'm going to assume you've ran into them, but I still think they're worth a good looking intoo-
so far, watching YT videos and talking to people has been the best way for me to learn, just studying with a book or website makes me wanna break everything in site
Then just continue like that I suppose, just remember to look things up often and take notes of things so not to forget them too quickly
@brazen zodiac hey have you considered subscribing to the Deutsch Perfekt magazine?
It's posted out to you monthly, has stuff for all levels, has cardboard vocab cards you can cut out and store, and exercises
I'm B2 but still find it good. Well I just got my first trial subscription magazine but I would say it would be an effective way to learn for more passive learners - have your goal be to get through the magazine over the whole month. It's really doable!
the kids version Deins! is awesome for beginners too
Hallo
Moin
hallo leute
Hallo
But this isn't the channel for chatting like this
#general-2 or #german-only would be better for German chatting
Hey everyone, just a small note: I didn't do any learning sessions this weekend as I'm pretty busy with assignments. I should be doing another session or two next weekend though!
Thanks everyone who has been coming to the sessions so far. It's a lot of fun and I look forward to doing more soon. ❤
And by the way, if anyone else here is interested in running a one-off session today or tomorrow to make up for my lack of one, feel free to do so! It doesn't matter what level. Just post the details in this channel or DM/ping me and I can help you with whatever you need.
Willkommen
Willkommen @peak robin
Entchuldigung Leute. Diese Art von Gespräch passt lieber in #beginner-german, #german-only , #general-2 oder #general ❤
#lessons is for planning/announcing organized lessons only.
And for discussing during a lesson.

Au-pairs leben bis zu einem Jahr bei der Familie, kümmern sich um die Kleinen und helfen auch bei leichten Aufgaben im Haushalt.
This sentence is skipped?
I read that.
Außerdem müssen sie die Reise nach Deutschland selbst bezahlen können. Nicht-EU-Ausländer dürfen auch nur ein Mal in Deutschland als Au-pair arbeiten.
In Österreich und in der Schweiz sind die Normen ähnlich. In der Schweiz gibt es aber in jedem Kanton kleine Unterschiede.
