Hello
German natives, what is the general attitude surrounding walther wenck?
No
Hi, are there any peculiarities concerning the German world "grapefruit"?
Like I know that it’s kind of tabu to talk about nazis there
Grapefruit (f), Pomelie (f)
My teacher asked me to prepare a report on this
but I don't know what's the difference between these nouns
But what’s the attitude surrounding him specifically
I am not sure many people even know who it is
my German girlfriend saw your message and said "Who?"
yeah, we looked at Wikipedia
why do you specifically want toknow about him?
@flat marten how good is your German? this website has etymology: https://dwds.de/wb/Grapefruit
thanks!

Gestern habe ich und meine freunde 1 Mai gefeiert bei meinen Hause.Bevor das,wir musste unsere Hof aufgeraumen und vorbereiten fur den Feier.Wir habe viel gegessen und viel gelacht und macht spaß aber danach jemand geht nach Hause und Ich war enttäuscht weil niemand bot sein Hilfe an.Ich und meine Bruder musste alle selbst aufgeraumen aber was auch immer Es war toll...
Konnen jemand meine ubung koregieren
Ich weiß dass es gibt zu viel Fehler aber ich versuche sehr fließend zu sprechen...
P.S vieleicht jemand fragt sich warum Wir haben 1 Mai gefeiert - in Meine Land 1 Mai ist Tag der Arbeit und auf 1 Mai keine Geschäft,Market oder Supermarkt arbeite.Ja wir sind verzogern Leute Ich weiß...
@blazing zodiac 1st of May is May Day, it’s a holiday in lots of countries 😃
Can somebody explain the difference between wurde,würde and werde
Sure. You can think of werden as the "present/future tense" form of werden and wurden is like the "simple past tense" form.
There are a few uses for werden.
The first one you learn is for making the future tense. Ich werde essen. I will eat.
You also use it for passive sentences, but you can wait to learn about that if you're a beginner.
But werden is for present tense passive and wurden is for past tense passive basically.
Würden is a bit different. It's konjunktiv 2 which is basically for "imaginary" or "theoretical" things, like "I would do that if I could". Ich würde das tun, wenn ich könnte.
@blazing zodiac
Summary: werden = future or present; wurden = past; würden = imaginary/theoretical.
Waren is past of sein.
Ich bin => ich war.
Every verb has its own past forms.
Sorta like in English. I am => I was. I eat => I ate. And so on.
But it's werden => wurden.
Np.
Everyone, what's the priority order on articles? For example, does a word's ending (e, ei, heit etc) take presidence over let's say, weather expressions which tend to have the der article. Anyone know?
Yeah, they sometimes do. I've made a chart for that when I was in secondary school, actually. Let me see if I can find it.
Would be very much appreciated if you could find it 😄
Found it! It was in Dutch, so I've translated it to English.
First page is prefixes and suffixes, second page are some other clues that can sometimes tell you what article to use.
This is great, thank you!
You're welcome! ^^
that's a lot of endings to keep track of haha

I won't be able to host on weekdays anymore - if anyone else would like to volunteer to host this group during weekdays then you can, just ping me. The Saturday slot should still usually be ok for me, but I can't guarantee that every time as my location depends on my family's plans.
Nonetheless, a session will be starting in ~15 minutes for everyone that's interested. It will just be a standard session going by the original plan of everyone speaking alone for a time frame and then a discussion, followed by the next person's opinion.

Wann muss/darf ihr gehen? -In 10 Minuten, der Zug fährt um 13.30 Uhr
Did you want to say "When do you have to go?" or "When can you go?"
do you have to go
I'd rather use "Wann müsst ihr gehen?" I am not that good at German though.
hey lads?
what does this sentence translate to? wen ihr den anrufen?
ignore capitalization/spelling errors please
@deft jungle i think this sentence is the error, where is it from?
It was on one o f my german worksheet, but it was in present tense. The version you see up there is my attempt of putting it into past tense
@deft jungle what is the present tense version of it
Wen ruft ihr denn an?
qwait i think i know wht i did wrong
is hat wen ihr den anrufen? (ignore spelling/caps) correct?
no, question words go at the beginning
Check word order and verb form
ok cool
Hey guys, I was wondering if there is gonna be a session today

"Wir sind nach Berlin gefahren."
"Wir haben ein Auto gefahren."

Oh i just want to know, when do the unterricht start?
@manic geyser The schedule is very unstable, people are usually pinged when there's something going on
Ask Passivpferd for more info
@runic valley okay, thank you very much! =)
@ruby ocean excuse me, do you know when the next Unterricht will be? Or is there any plan? =)
There's no plan, people just do it when they feel like it. The lessons are usually held on the weekend, however.
Hey hab bald ps4 p
okay, thank you

So I was alone, without anyone with whom I could actually speak, until 6 years ago, when I have had an accident in the Sahara desert.
Thank you, anyway do you know why "hätte sprechen können" is used?
hätte is Konjuktiv II, which is roughly equivalent to "would" in English (at least in this case)
so hätte sprechen können is "could have spoken (to)" whereas simply sprechen können is "can speak to"
Then is "gesprochen haben könnten" wrong?
yes
well
I don't know
@desert vault halp, is it wrong or not :o
sowwy for ping :<
a) it'd be könnte for ich
b) since the auxiliary is now attached to sprechen instead of können the meaning probably changes slightly; not 100% sure how though; still thinking
c) ping me anytime flops
I'd say that attaching the haben to sprechen instead changes the temporal meaning
gesprochen haben könnte - could have had spoken to
hätte sprechen können - could have spoken to
Okay thank you
Hi
If we wanted to say a phrase like
I spent my whole holiday in X, a small town near Y
in German, would we conjugate the second part of the sentence as well?
if it has a verb, yeah
I mean if it would sound like
Ich habe meine ganze Ferien in X, eine kleine Stadt verbracht.
Or
Ich habe meine ganze Ferien in X, einer kleiner Stadt verbracht.
einer kleinen Stadt

Hallo, willkommen!
ich versuche mein deutsch zu verbessern. aber nicht schlecht :)
Hello
Am I right with the prepositions?
-Wir treffen uns um 17.00 Uhr vor der Schule (ab would also be correct, but it would be translated to "from" not "at" if you intended that)
-the third sentence doesn't really work. Is Herr Bellmans vacation from today 15 o'clock to the 19th of july? "vom 15 Uhr" definitely does not work like that
-Am Montag bin ich für drei Wochen im Urlaub (Um would be translated to "around Monday", but this sentence does not look like it fits here, even though I think it might be grammatically correct)
@mental stirrup
Thanks André !

But in others it is: Räume ... aus!
Why?
Both are gramatically correct
It's just that Räume or Laufe or Schlafe is a very old way of saying it
or like in literature
you'd use it in literature

Who is making the Unterricht? :O And is it in this channel that the unterricht is?
I ask some question in this channel
ok:)
@vagrant prism was glaubst du, was die Lösung ist?
@boreal zealot It's usually for when we do grammar lessons that are held on a voice chat. They're hosted by various people, for example me, at random times
@ruby ocean Ich denke 'a', aber in den Lösungen steht : 'c'
Everyone usually gets ping when it happens
So what do you think
@vagrant prism Hast du 'a' wegen "Heimatmuseum" gewählt? Ich glaube, dieser Termin geht nur um "Feiertage". Keine Termine passen zu der Frage perfekt, aber vielleicht wäre Samstagvormittag besser, weil man während der Begrüßung ein bisschen Geschichte bekommt.
die Frage ist immerhin unfair
Ja wegen Heimatmuseum
Ich hätte deswegen auch 'a' gewählt
Jeder hatte 'a' gewählt.
deswegen ist die Frage eine Fangfrage und also doof
Das stimmt
Die Frage hat mir geraten, "Im Text stehen andere Wörter als in der Aufgabe"
das berichtet, nur was ohnehin offensichtlich ist
Gibt es jeden Samstag Unterricht?

What would be "a hint of" in German?
ein Hauch von X
more general
Esskultur describes eating habits and behaviour at the table etc, it's a broad and lofty term (for me at least) @vale flint
What about Essgewohnheiten?
Essgewohnheiten is purely meant for eating habits
I'd say that Essgewohnheiten is a part of Esskultur
Thanks man
How would I say "A lot of different situations arose because of the German Kaiserreich" or something similar?
lit. would be "Viele verschiedene Situationen haben sich aufgrund des Deutschen Kaiserreichs ereignet" but something like "Vieles hat sich wegen des .... ereignet" seems more natural here
Okay, thank you very much!
anytime
Hello everyone! I was wondering when you would use 'von' over the genitive. Anyone care to give me some advice on that?
I think you can use it in nearly every scenario
In daily usage, most people use "von" instead of Genitiv
@stiff fractal
thank you very much!
@stiff fractal Das ist ja keine Ausrede, den Genitiv nicht gut zu erlernen!
Oh definitely, just gotta make sure I don't make any mistakes on it!
I have heard that there are two type of conjuctions in German and that the bisentence changes depending on which type you use.
Which kind of conjuction are those?
@vale flint I don't know what you mean by "bisentence changes", but the names of the conjunctions are coordinating conjunctions and subordinating conjunctions, the latter of which changes the word order of the conjugated verb
I mean sentences like this Gemüse zum Erbse und Bohne ist Populär mit Dorsch. Essen kommt aus Agrikultur ist populär, weil die Geografie gut ist.
After the comma the verb is placed last
Because there is weil
But this is not for all conjuctions I think
Weil ist die Subjunktion. Subjunktionen leiten Nebensätze ein. In den Nebensätzen stehen Verben immer am Satzende.
Konjunktionen verbinden zwei Hauptsätze miteinander. z.B, er geht in die Küche, denn er möchte das Frühstück zubereiten .(denn) ist die Konjunktion. In diesem Beispiel gibt es keinen Nebensatz, nur zwei Hauptsätze, die mithilfe der Konjunktion "denn" miteinander verbunden wurden.
If I understand correctly the Nebensätze is the one who decides the word order yes?
Nebensätze = subordinate clauses, in which the verbs are always at the end of the sentence. Subjunctions induce the subordinate clauses.
Is aber one of them?
Lust auf eine Abkühlung? Kein Problem! Auf moebel.de findest Du bequem eine große Auswahl an Schwimmbecken, Whirlpools oder Planschbecken zu Top-Preisen.
Planschbecken
Schwimmbecken
oder Pool
@vale flint weil, obwohl, wenn, als etc. are subjunctions
denn, aber, sondern, oder, und are conjunctions
Ah thanks 👌
Tbh, German use Pool
Does this sentence look right? "Ein von dem größte und wichtigste Länder in Europa."
The adjectives in particular
Eins der größten und wichtigsten Länder Europas
Okay, thank you
Hey guys, this question has probably been answered before but i still need to ask again when do you use dir, mir and when do you use dich, mich?
👍 will do
What does 'Wärst' mean in 'Wärst du da'? Google translate says it means were and be but i cant really get the feel of how and when i should use it
Wärst is a shortening of wärest, which is a part of the subjunctive II mood in German
that in itself is an entire grammar concept which you should learn as you are able, but it's like a hypothetical
well that's what i mean
it's a large concept that i can't just explain with examples
google's translation wasn't really correct
it's best to just ignore that for now and come back to it when you have an understanding of how the subjunctive works
alrighty thanks
ofc
Hello! Im looking a language partner to learn German in exchange for Spanish Lessons/ Classes
If you're interested, pm me! 😃
in 'Würdest du sie verlassen' why isnt ihr used instead of sie? I thought sie=she and ihr=her? or am i mistaken
verlassen takes a direct object
sie stays the same in its accusative form
you can't translate word-for-word, as ihr also means "their"
if i used ihr would the sentence still be correct?
no
oh
ihr is the indirect object for feminine singular, e.g. ich gebe ihr den Apfel "I give her the apple"
in english, "her" happens to be both the direct and indirect object, but they're not the same in german
oooooo i see tyty
I dont get the meaning of "sich an" and the context of als in "Es fühlte sich an, als würde es brennen". Can someone help me out hehe
"sich" is part of every reflexive verb.
"anziehen" is composed of "an" and "ziehen" and is divided. "an" is always at the end of a sentence if it's in present tense. Can't get the name of this kind of verbs, though.
moin, na alle fleißig am lernen ?
so i should just put an at the end of present tense sentences regardless of the prescence of a seperable word with an in it?
Not every time.
"Ich kaufe im Supermarkt ein."
Infinitive: Einkaufen
Isn't there a more fancy word for this ?
Nope
I thought too complicated in this case, then 😄
You could say it's a verb which is split into a lexical core with its respective separable particle
But who wants that :^)
so is the seperable verb for "Es fühlte sich an, als würde es brennen" be anfülen?
sich anfühlen (reflexive verb)
im a ghost, seems like nobody can see me 😛
i can see uuu c:
Mainly because it doesn't make much sense for me to learn German 😄
"as if"
hmm i see
i just wanted a reaction on my person 😦
hello person
hello 0x1 😃

is there a way to tell when "als" would mean as if?
yes, it behaves that way due to "würde" which is a conjunctive
do people use "als" in a sarcastic way
like in english you say "as if"
but in a sarcastic way
that'd be "als ob" which is another translation of "as if"
when do i use als ob ?
in subordinate clauses that are unlikely to happen (https://www.duden.de/sprachwissen/sprachratgeber/Nebensatze-mit-als-ob-als-wenn-wie-wenn)
würde mich ja gerne beteiligen am helfen aber mit Konjunktiv, Reflexiv usw. hab ichs nich so 😄
Ja kein Problem :)
thanks a lot!
anytime
gon take me a while to digest hehehe
@safe crater sarcastic "as if" translates to "Von wegen"
als ob
von wegen is used more like youd use "on the contrary"
on the contrary is used more like youd use "auf der anderen Seite"
"Von wegen!" als alleinstehender umgangssprachlicher Ausruf ist näher an etwas stark Betontem, wie "You must be joking!" oder "As if!"
", von wegen!" am Ende eines Satzes entspricht dem englischen ", my ass!"
Aber die Betonung ist dabei wie häufig fast wichtiger, als die pure wörterbuchgetreue Übersetzung.
Übersetzung für deutsch-englisch/Von wegen.html) im Englisch-Deutsch-Wörterbuch dict.cc.
So viele freiwillige Deutschlehrer hier 😄
Ja dafür sind wir ja hier ^^
I believe the "fancy word" you guys were looking for was trennbare verben
About the separable verbs
Im just a begginer though, might be wrong
Even more fancy: Präfixverben
Guten tag. Ich suche Deutscher(innen) die mir deutsch unterrichten möchten. Als gegenleistung unterrichte ich gerne (um sonnst) Holländisch über voicechat. Ich kann mich sehr gut verstehbar machen auf deutsch, aber ich mache zu viele Grammatikfehler. Also ich möchte gerne mein deutsch perfektionieren! Dankeschön im Voraus.
Both immer noch and noch translates to "still". Do i take it that they are the same?
why is it er instead of ihn in"Ich habe weniger Münzen als er" ?
Because als takes Nominative. I would be unable to say why, though.
hmm
Posessive sentences that compare an amount just use the Nominativ (mehr als/weniger als)
"Ihn" is Akkusativ and asking "Ich habe weniger Münzen als wen/was?" wouldn't work, as you'd have to ask "Ich habe weniger Münzen als wer?"
If that makes any sense
so i use ihn only to direct something to a guy?
Kinda
As I said, like with als Kausus, you have a question assigned to it
Ihn = Akkusativ = Wen oder Was?
It could be "Wen magst du nicht?"
"Ich mag ihn nicht"
oooo i see i see
by any chance does this this got to do with direct and indirect objects
cos i had a similar case yesterday
Indirect Object are mostly Dativ and Genitiv
"Ich helfe dir" as example, "dir" would be the indirect object (Wem helfe ich?)
While in "Ich suche meinen Schlüssel" the group "meinen Schlüssel" would be the direct object (Wen oder was suche ich?)
A direct object by definiton is in Akkusativ
why is dir indirect btw
Because it is Dativ
By definition indirect objects are Dativ or Genitiv
Mostly Dativ though
so which would be the direct object in the sentence
In "ich helfe dir" is no direct object
hmm i see
As a sentence usually only as one object
Hey, i am learning how to write essay fur meine Familie
für*
"der Vater von meinen Vater" - " die Mutter von meinem Vater"
yes i dont have umlaut or whatevers it typed in my keyboard
XD

Xd
"der Vater von meinen Vater" - " die Mutter von meinem Vater" these are right?
yes
cool, i thought the " meinen"
would be the same in both cases
but seems it gets affected by Mutter or Vater
xD
oh wait
no
its always meinem
but you could say "der Vater meines Vaters"/"die Mutter meines Vaters"
oh okay , thanks, it made no sense to me XD
hmmm
i will go with von 😄
ty for the response !
np
one more thing since u are here 😄
" Mein Vater ist dreiundvierzing und meine Mutter is zweiundvierzing Jahre alt"

or it can go 1 time in the end?
you dont have to
it's fine the way it is
okay thanks a lot !
its okay how you have it, except its vierzig, not vierzing
np
also, you can leave off the second "ist"
"Mein Vater ist 43 und meine Mutter 42 Jahre alt"
ok good !
i used to be better in german, but 7 years passed without using the language and here i am

I have to remake a sentence by using "dass"
- . Es tut ihm Leid. Er hat seinen Onkel nicht besucht.
i should put "hat" in the end of the sentence?
yes
As far as I know; you have to take the finite verb of the sentence that is initiated with "dass" and put it at last
Es tut ihm leid, dass er seinen Onkel nicht besucht hat.
is there a difference in the use of nochmals and wieder?
in the sentence "nehmen sie doch bitte platz" why do they use the word doch? Doesnt it mean but
Doch is what you say to counter a negative statement. Like if someone asks “don’t you have X”, “doch” means “yes I do”
But it also suggests things, as it’s being used here
It doesn’t really have a direct translation for all its uses but I guess you could translate that as “but please, take a seat”
Hello, i just want to ask if my sentense is correct? I need to make my sentense a little complex for B2 Telc. Hope someone can help make suggestions. Danke
Sounds better, yeah. Thank you!
Danke!
Darüber hinaus haben Sie mir versichert, dass das Zubehör komplett war, aber ich habe festgestellt, dass sich in der Verpackung kein Zubehor befindet.
How about this one?
id change two things, but that is just my preference: komplett to vollständig, and id say "dass sich in der Verpackung gar kein Zubehör befindet" to make it more obvious there was nothing at all
ahh sounds better, thanks!
There's another mistake
Darüber hinaus haben Sie mir versichert, dass das Zubehör komplett sei.
The Konjunktiv is needed here because it's a) indirect speech and b) the statement from the seller might not be true. You would use the Indicative only if the statement you're citing is absolutely true.
ahhh, yeah i remember. Danke
In "Hast du der Neuen schon guten Tag gesagt?" why does this refer to a woman?
der Neuen = der neuen Frau/Bewohnerin/Kollegin
it's in dative
i dont get it
but there is no frau in the sentence
should i take it that neuen always means new woman
in this context, yes
it's like in English
when you say
"Have you talked to the new one"
just that German gives the gender too
hmm i see i see
i also heard that in german you use any adjective as a noun if you want to
is it tru
well you have an example there
so if i were to use an adjective as a noun would it always be refering to someone or something?
yes
alrighty thankies
so basically if it were to be in english
it'd always be something like
adjective - one
pretty much yes, plural also possible (adjective - ones)
hmmmmm
dat digs up an old question
how does plurals in german work
its like sometimes they just substitute with umlauts
or just add an -en
idk
yeah you gotta learn it
oki
Kann man fragen: kennt ihr euch hier aus?
durchaus
Ich bedanke mich 😛
Hello, i just want to ask if these are correct.
Es war im Jahr 2015 als ich zusammen mit meinen Freunden eine Reise in Benguet gemacht, da ich gerne diese Stadt besuchen möchte, um unsere erste Bergwanderung in dem beliebten Gebirge "Mount Ulap" zu machen, die dort liegt. Ich liebe es, neue Orte zu besuchen und neue Aktivitäten auszuprobieren, deswegen, als ich die Einladung von einer Freundin erhalten habe, habe ich sofort beschlossen, beizutreten.
Reise nach Benguet gemacht habe;
den nächsten teil verstehe ich nicht, da die zusammenhänge wahrscheinlich mit falschen wörtern ausgedrückt werden. (what i understand "because i'd like to visit this city, for having our first hike [in some mountains], which is located there")
"deswegen, als ich die Einladung von einer Freundin erhalten habe, habe ich deswegen sofort beschlossen beizutreten/mit zu kommen."
it is not easy to correct if i dont know what you are trying to say
besuchen wollte
is und selbst an idiom?
ahh i want to say, because i want to visit the city, and make my first Hiking, in a mountain that is located there
google translate says und selbst mean "and even", is it wrong?
no, you can use "sebst" as emphasis just like "even" (eg, "is it even possible to do that?")
Mit einem Lied auf den Lippen zogen die Soldaten in den Kampf. =>is this grammatically correct?
yes
kennt jemand das Wort: Abflussregime? Was bedeutet es?
bedeutet also das Wort den Verlauf des Ablfusses eines Gewässers?
dieses Wort ist ein Terminus Technicus aus dem Bereich der Hydrologie und es beschreibt die Variabilität eines Flusses (oder generell eines Gewässers) durchs ganze Jahr
Terminus Technicus
also das hab ich auch noch nie gehört, “Fachbegriff“ zu deutsch?
