Der Ritter will sein Visier nicht öffnen. Er sagt, er kann es nicht vor Mitternacht öffnen, wegen eines (richterlichtes? maybe ritterlichem? like kightly.) Gelübdes. Er ist da, weil er vor 15 Jahre den König gerettet hat, und er kommt um seine Belohnung abzuholen. Der König hat versprochen, dass der Ritter etwas haben könnte, dass in seinem Schloss ist. Der Ritter hat nicht gewusst, was es war. Es war eigentlich die Prinzessin und jetzt kommt der Ritter um sie einzufordern.

Die Königin, Frau Calanthe, stellt einen Ritter namens Igel von Erlenwand vor. Sie hält dessen Ablehnung, seinen Helm abzunehmen, für eine Beleidigung. Er widerspricht, dass es ihm verboten sei, sein Gesicht vor Mitternacht zu enthüllen, und Frau Calanthe akzeptiert diese Erklärung. Der Ritter erzählt, dass er vor 15 Jahren das Leben des Königs gerettet hat, und behauptet, dass er gekommen sei, um seine versprochene Belohnung abzuholen. Frau Calanthe fragt ihn kritisch, ob er dem König helfen würde, hätte er dem Ritter nichts versprochen. Zudem lehnt sie es ab, die Belohnung einfach abzugeben. Der Ritter verkündet zornig, dass Prinzessin Pavetta ihm damals versprochen wurde, und daraufhin bricht im Publikum Chaos aus.

Die Gäste zeigen sich verärgert, aber die Königin erlaubt es. Igel von Erlenwald beginnt seine Geschichte zu erzählen: Vor 15 Jahren, Calanthes Gemahl, der König Roegner, habe sich im Erlenwald verirrt und stürzte vom Pferd in eine Schlucht. Er rief um Hilfe, aber nur die Schlangen und Werwölfe antworteten. Ohne Igels Hilfe wäre er zweifellos gestorben, und jetzt kommt er nach Cintra um seine Belohnung zu erhalten. Damals hat Igel darum gebeten, dass der König ihm das verspricht was er im Schloss zurückgelassen hat, ohne zu wissen, was das auch nur sein mag. Als der König zurückkam, fand er seine Frau im Kindbett, mit einer Tochter, Pavetta.

Sie bittet ihn, sein Gesicht zu zeigen, aber er lehnt die Anfrage ab, wegen einem ritterlichem Gelübde. Er kann sein Gesicht erst nach Mitternacht zeigen. Obwohl der Saal sich mit leisen Flüchen an Igel adressiert füllt, stimmt Calathe zu.

Igel erzählt seine Geschichte. Er spricht über König Roegner, der ein Unfall, während einer Jagd hatte. Er lag in der Schlucht, zur Schwelle des Todes, und dann kam Igel und rettete ihm. Aber die Rettung war nicht uneigennützig. Calanthe wollte ihm ihren Dank aussprechen, obwohl Roegner bereits verstorben ist. Sobald Igel eine Belohnung erwähnt, wird Calanthe misstrauisch. Sie fragt, ob er Roegner gerettet hätte, hätte er keine Belohnung versprochen. Igel gibt zu, dass Calanthe Recht hat. Er will ... ihre Tochter, Pavetta! (Rittersporn sitzt in einem Gasthaus weit weg und hat ein seltsames Gefühl, dass er etwas -Geralt natürlich- vermisst).

Calanthe erklärt, dass in ihrem Schloss Igel machtlos ist. Sie droht Igel und sagt, dass er derzeit auch an der Schwelle des Todes steht, wie ihr Ehemann auch in der Schlucht lag. Igel zeigt keine Furcht vor Calanthe und hat ein verstörendes Grinsen, als er erklärt, dass er 15 Jahre gewartet hat. Er will nur Pavetta, seine Belohnung, einfordern.

Das einzige woran ich mich bei dieser Geschichte, die mit so vielen Altmodischen Wörtern voll gepackt ist erinnern kann ist :

Die meisten haben einfach nur gestritten und waren kurz davor sich gegenseitig ins Gesicht zu schlagen... Messer wurden definitiv rumgefuchtelt.

Viele Gäste äußern sich, oft mit Flüchen, zu den Worten Igels. Die Königin versucht, die Situation wieder unter Kontrolle zu bringen, aber nur mit wenig Erfolg. Dann bringt Gokgokling das ganze schließlich zu Ende. Geralt merkt, dass Pavetta die smaragdgrünen Augen erhoben hat, und lässt ihren Blick zwischen ihm und Mäusesack wandern. Gokgokling bittet um eine Chance sich zu der Sache zu äußern, und Calanthe gewährt sie ihm. Er fragt, wie Igel hätte gewusst haben können, was der König zu Hause als Erstes finden würde. Was wäre wenn ein Gardist oder Schwiegermutter das Erste gewesen wäre? Er meint, dies sei die Vorsehung, ein Überraschungskind, und er warnt davor, sich der Vorsehung entgegen zustellen.

Dann warnt Gokgokling, dass das Schicksal nicht verarscht werden darf, deshalb muss das Versprechen eingehalten werden.

Nach der Baron von Tigg ausredet, stand Calanthe und, zu riesige Überraschung, bestätigt, was Igel behauptet. Roegner hat das Versprechen wirklich gemacht.
Calanthe schlägt vor, dass der Rat einberuft werden sollte, so sie entscheiden, was zu getan werden muss. Sie entschuldigen sich, aber der Herren sind nicht zufrieden.
Dann erhebt Geralt sich und spricht, dass ein Rat nicht nötig ist. Alle Leute starren ihn an. Der Hexer und Mäussack spürt ein Kraft in der Luft.
Igel versteht Geralts Wörter wie eine Herausforderung, aber Geralt erzählt was er meint. Er erklärt, dass der Thron nicht Igel interessiert, sondern die Prinzessin mitzunehmen. Dann sagt der Hexer, dass er kann die Prinzessin nur mitnehmen kann, nur wenn Pavetta das will. Das war die Bedingung des Roegners Schwurs.|| @coarse yacht

Igel will die Prinzessin bekommen (not wrong but sounds more natural without it). Er sagt, dass der König ihm die Prinzessin versprochen hat. Gerald sagt, dass diese Versprechen nur gültig sind, wenn das Kind zustimmt.

Plötzlich offenbarte Geralt die Bedingungen des Vertrags. Laut dem Recht der Überraschung, kann die Prinzessin nur mit Igel gehen wenn sie es selbst so will. (Rittersporn wartet in einem Wirtshaus auf Geralt. Gleich werden sie die Küste besuchen, und am Strand während des Sonnenuntergangs spazieren gehen. Dort wird er Gerald sein neustes Lied darbieten, welches von ihm inspiriert wurde. )
