The fact alone that people recommend waiting for any kind of “catch up event” to take place before people come back or try the game out just shows how bad the current new player experience is. its never too late to come back, but if i were in your shoes, i will not come back - if not for a community/group of friends whose still playing the game. Without one - if you get to that point of doing raids in order to push your gear ilvl further - it's mostly unfriendly and unwelcoming, unless you find a lobby hosted from LFG Discord (prog/semi-prog groups). Most people you find in PUGS are either perfectionists/imposters i.e reclear = perfect run. But if you find a community, it's manageable (if Lost Ark itself is fun for you)

basically there are two skulls
one glows and one doesnt
akkan turns to the one that glows but that doesnt mean thats where you will go
because his shadow is behind him
so the shadow will go in the opposite direction
so basically if the skull on the right glows you go left
and if it glows on the left you go right
as long as you are going in the direction you are meant to go you wont get caught
thats basically how i learnt it 
sometimes he will try to bait you aswell but he will still always go in the direction of the one that glows
just need to look at the skulls alone nothing else oh and also dont stand too close to him aswell cuz it can count you infront of him and therefore outside the shadow so you get caught

Check the pinned gear progression TLDR. You just want to do the main story
The main story will become item level gated, so there's the speedrun to tier 3 guide pinned as well.
The speedrun will have you do islands which'll give you boxes of honing materials. Just open as you need them to hone your gear to reach the next area. Rinse and repeat until you finish South Vern.
Refer to the google doc about tier gear progression for a short section on how honing works.
