There is 4 levels of engravings one can learn and have free acess on all characters
+3 - USED to require green books to even have acess - now everyone gets for free in alt+i
+6 - rare books
+9 - epic books
+12 - legendary books

to get + 12 you need 20 legendary books AS well as all previous one - you can only start reading those books if you learned 20 rare and 20 epic
thats what you trying to do - to skip a level.

than you get to open map, do stories there and progress gearscore of your char

intro story lvl1-50
opening continents and upgrading gear 1-1415 (still can count as a story, you just do quests to get there but hone gear to upgrade with those materials)
1415 first proper raid normal diff and 1445 hard dif (nobody does normal)
path gives you tons of matterials to upgrade char 1445++++++ (to what extent we dont yet know but goes quite a long way actually)
at the release of path you get separate ticket, not connected to the path by using which 1 char gets 1445 instantly.

you start with the ilvl 250 gear which drops from very first chaos dungeon - that gear you hone to 1100 until you get access to 1100 chaos dungeon(unlocked after punika main story) in that chaos dungeon you drop T3 gear

there was a time where you started with 302 gear honed that to 600, did yorn main story to unlock T2 content, get T2 gear with 802 ilvl -> hone that to 1100 to get to T3 content

knowledge transfer is basically just a quest skip for gold, if you value 2 hours of your life more than 600-6000 gold depends which main story you skip

I'm going to be honest, I dont' remember what area that will be, I would recommend following the story, doing chaos dungeons, guardian raids etc for mats to get your char up to legion raid level (Valtan/Vykas) so you can start crafting relic gear, and then move up higher in ilvl.

Don’t worry about making a purple tool right now. You need life skill materials you get from excavating to even craft one in the first place. Just run around and excavate for now.

Later on, you can craft a tool in your stronghold. Look for a tool that rolls with super armor and preferably increased basic mat gain as well.

Just do chaos dungeons and stuff. Build up event currency and get back into the swing of things. You came back at a… not so great time. No new player events.
There’s gonna be a ton of events in a few weeks with the new Breaker class, but none right now. Refer to the pinned tldr and Google doc about gear progression for more.
