Newbie question: is honing and maintaining alts really a "must have" if you wanna keep up with endgame? I'm hearing either it's still a must have and that it's fake news. Is there a consensus?

Generally yes, but if you're new and on jumpstart (hoping you are) it's not hard to make a second character and use that as an alt with the 2 express events
