1. review the guy's portfolio and reverse search everything. if it appears elsewhere, check if it's uploaded by someone other than him (the reason that search results dont mean anything without checking is because some people publicly share the work, e.g me)
2. ask for progress pictures as the map was being built. not everyone has these because not every builder takes progress pics but if this person does, they're most likely the builder
3. past transactions: has this individual made successful past sales without complaints? check other servers that have a reputation or merit system if possible
4. check the hiddendevs scam logs just to be safe, scammers usually get one more chance after being banned for scamming
5. if you're truly that paranoid, use the HiddenDevs middleman service. though the seller is not obligated to use the service, and can cancel the deal.

i for example, would cancel a deal if it involved ANY middleman. yet i have lots of successful transactions not involving middlemen and i would be happy to prove it lol. i dont want to send my files to anyone other than the customer, simple as that

also my advice for maps specifically: dont buy them. ive had plenty of clients dm me about maps they bought needing bug fixing. most maps are riddled with bugs and are hot messes. it's best to make your own or commission someone to do so
