You can certainly look at the tech tree even without contributing any materials towards it. It's separated into several... well, tiers. Each tier there's some techs that have to be chosen between (basically a voting system where building one prototype kit counts as a vote for that tech) and then things that the faction will just get once that tier is completed. From a quick internet search most people want to get rid of the choice-of-1 section.

Not recommended, though doable. You need to constantly have 1 person switch between gunning and watching with binos and if you get caught off guard you die to an enemy vehicle.

This game used to be a lot about getting the first shot/shots in. Maybe not so much anymore with armor changes we will see how that develops but i doubt its changed massively

Current clans on wardens are older and more massive but fewer, while colonials dont feature this as heavily though raid has been long enough now to count as one i guess...
Warden road network is a mess but natural terrain makes traveling as an enemy into them a bit longer though i dont actually believe on side has an advantage with building because the terrain irregularities make building bunkers as a warden crap.
The colonials have a nice main logi highway but wheter it sees use is pretty much dependent on how the war goes not always good either if you dont defend it.
Theres aesthetics too and town layouts
But for the vehicle and gun differences you have no choice but to play both sides each multiple times.

For you to use a single tank effectively you need infantry to take out their anti tank AI with HE grenades

or artillery etc

Then you can advance the tank with the infantry slowly and use the tank to flatten trenches and slaughter infantry
