Dyno Outage Postmortem (8/1)
TLDR: A change in gateway event data caused a significant increase in traffic within our network. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused service degradation; this led us to troubleshoot across multiple services, before ultimately finding the root cause. A hotfix was then deployed to reduce event payload size.
Timeline:
- While performing network maintenance, engineers restarted a host server that triggered a series of events leading to cluster instability.
- We began troubleshooting reports of delayed responses and commands
- After realizing our standard solutions weren’t having an impact, we started addressing increased CPU and Memory usage in the cluster.
- Once the cluster was stabilized, we were able to identify unusually high bandwidth in our message broker service, and began inspecting the event payloads to identify the cause of that increase.
- We deployed a hotfix to decrease the size of the payloads, fixing the root cause of the outage.
- A bug in a third-party service delayed the hotfix for approximately 6-8 hours before it could be released.
We established several new practices and systems to better prevent incidents like this going forward. Furthermore, we’ve expanded the team by adding a new Backend Engineer with experience in our infrastructure.
It’s the perfect time to level up your Discord server! 🚀

Dyno Outage Postmortem (5/28/2025)
As some of you are aware, Dyno recently experienced downtime due to multiple infrastructure-related issues that disrupted service stability and responsiveness. During the course of the incident, we uncovered areas for improvement not only in our hosting environment but also within the core codebase. We’ve since implemented several fixes and improvements to reduce the likelihood and impact of similar incidents in the future.
What We’ve Done
Infrastructure Improvements:
-
Identified and fixed infrastructure components that contributed to cascading failures across our system.
-
Improved monitoring and alerting systems to detect early warning signs of node failure, resource exhaustion, and unhealthy service states.
Codebase & Bot Performance Enhancements:
-
Refactored parts of our command-processing logic to better handle unexpected errors and reduce their downstream impact.
-
Improved our timeout and retry mechanisms to deal more gracefully with degraded external service conditions.
-
General bug fixes where things were simply just broken.
Closing Thoughts
We understand how important Dyno is to your communities, and we deeply regret the disruption this caused. Ensuring reliability is our top priority, and this incident has prompted meaningful improvements across our systems and operations. We’re grateful for your continued trust and patience as we make Dyno even more resilient.
If you have feedback or questions, we’re always here — reach out via our support server.

Dyno Outage Postmortem (9/25/2025)
As some of you are aware, Dyno recently experienced downtime due to network related issues that disrupted service availability. The issue originated from the fiber connection and wiring which is outside the purview of the Dyno infrastructure team. We worked closely with the data center provider to help restore the service.
Learnings and Planning Ahead
- The good news is that due to improvements we implemented during previous downtimes the service mostly restored itself once the network connectivity was restored. We will continue to invest in this area to make sure 100% of services can restore themself after an outage.
- Since our current data center provider had back to back issues on this site we are evaluating other data centers for hosting Dyno infrastructure.
Closing Thoughts
We understand how important Dyno is to your communities, and we deeply regret the disruption this caused. Ensuring reliability is our top priority, and this incident has prompted discussion to find a more reliable data center partner. We’re grateful for your continued trust and patience as we make Dyno even more resilient.
If you have feedback or questions, we’re always here — reach out via our support server.

Dyno Infrastructure Update (10/2/2025)
As some of you are already aware, over the past several weeks, our infrastructure engineer successfully migrated Dyno’s infrastructure to a new Kubernetes cluster. This move was important because our legacy cluster had become difficult to maintain and was running on archaic platform. At the same time, we updated several of our deployment pipelines.
The migration was largely smooth (datacenter outages aside 🥴). Some users may have noticed temporary issues such as delayed messages, but those have since been resolved. With the migration complete, Dyno now runs with improved performance, greater stability, and a foundation that is easier to maintain. If you notice anything unusual that previously worked, please let us know because it may be related to this change.
Scaling Up Capacity
We also expanded our physical capacity by purchasing and installing a new server. In the past, Dyno sometimes hit resource limits during peak hours, especially around holidays. This could cause shards to go offline and left us without enough capacity to bring them back quickly. With this upgrade, we now have the ability to handle peak demand much more reliably.
Closing Thoughts
These upgrades are not the only things we have done recently, our core engineer has fixed countless bugs and implemented automatic recovery for most of the services. Our goal is not only to prevent downtime but also to keep building a more resilient and scalable service for the future.
Thank you for your continued trust. If you have questions or spot anything unusual, we’re always here to help.

Announcing Dyno Memberships
Hey everyone, we’re excited to introduce Dyno Memberships 🎉
As you may know, Dyno is used by 11M+ servers, and we’ve always wanted to keep it accessible to everyone. However the challenge is that only a small group of server owners purchase premium which pays for the development, infrastructure, and ongoing live operations.
Memberships are our way of opening that up to anyone who wants to support Dyno. As a thank you, members receive a set of exclusive profile customizations, a small xp bonus and recognition across Dyno 🙌
To get started, head to the Premium section and switch to the Membership tab. You can choose from three tiers: Silver, Gold, and Diamond.
Each tier includes exclusive profile card backgrounds you can use across any server with Dyno:
- Silver: 10 cards
- Gold: Silver + 10 additional cards
- Diamond: Gold + Silver + 10 additional cards
We’re also working on another set of 30 cards (10 per tier) coming soon, along with plans for community submissions (more details soon).
Additional benefits:
XP Boost
- Silver: 1%
- Gold: 2%
- Diamond: 3%
Website recognition: your avatar will be highlighted (top right)
Diamond perk: leaderboard entries are highlighted with your profile card background for extra visibility (coming soon)
We hope you enjoy this new feature, and we truly appreciate your support in helping us continue to build and improve Dyno.
You can find more information in the documentation page.
If you have any questions, feel free to reach out in the appropriate support channel.

Upcoming Scheduled Maintenance: May 19th, 2026
As many of you remember, last summer was challenging. Our data center partners experienced multiple back-to-back failures that impacted your experience. We promised to find a better solution, and we have.
We are excited to announce that we are moving to a new, premium managed provider. To make this happen, we need a window of scheduled downtime for a physical migration.
When: <t:1779195600:F>
Duration: 24 hours
The Task: We will be taking Dyno offline to physically move our servers to the new facility.
We understand that 24 hours is a significant amount of downtime. However, this move is a critical investment in our infrastructure. By moving to a better-managed environment, we are ensuring a much more stable and reliable experience for everyone moving forward.
Thank you for your patience and for sticking with us as we level up our hardware. We will be posting regular updates in #dyno-status during the transition—stay tuned there for the latest news.

Post-mortem
We had a rough week. Here's what went down:
On saturday, the datacenter we are currently allocated in caught fire. This brought down the AC unit and the building temperature quickly went up and crashed our entire server stack due to overheating. We were unable to remotely connect to the servers and had to get the DC crew to go there and flip the switches back on.
On sunday, two of our three servers crashed. This brought down most of our stack but we were able to remotely connect to the servers and fix the issue.
Yesterday, the first outage was caused by server overheating. There are no indications to what caused it (If it was related to the DC or not), but we have been monitoring our temps ever since and things are nominal.
Also yesterday, our mongo db cluster had issues and that brought down our primary DB node and Dyno failed to fail over to our secondary node. We brought up the primary node and Dyno recovered.
Yesterday/today due to a poor log rotation configuration, our primary node disk filled up. Dyno was unable to fail over because the secondary node had its data corrupted somewhere along the way. Recovery wasnt smooth, after we brought our primary node up, we had to wait for the secondary to sync gigabytes of data and rebuild all our indexes, both operations took a long time. After that, Dyno recovered.
Sometimes it's hard to get a sense of scale, so here are some number:
We are on 1,573,275 guilds
We manage 52 virtual machines, all dedicated to software related to Dyno (from dyno itself, to monitoring, backend processes, etc)
We processed 3.95 billion messages last month
We sent 116.6 million messages last month
We sent 20.8 million webhooks last month
Our local network throughput is able to fully saturate a gigabit link at any time of the day.
At any time, discord sends us 30MB/s of data, peaking at 45-50MB/s. Thats 1.3TB to 2TB of monthly data that discord sends to us.
We are a team of 2 developers.
We take pride in our uptime and we employ the best practices when it comes to our infrastructure, this was the first major incident in more than 2 years of operation, and was a really unfortunate chain of events. All of our core services are highly available and redundant, but the software world is a dangerous place, and sometimes things go wrong. As always, we will take all of this as a lesson and improve the Dyno infrastructure to be even more resilient in the future.
Thanks for the patience and for sticking with us

** Database issues **
Quick update while we work on this:
Our database cluster is having issues.
It first started reporting increased latency across Dyno and Premium, then proceed to fail.
Failover to our secondary database took place, but it was also struggling.
Currently, Premium is running off the backup database. It's struggling and can't accomodate the traffic that Dyno generates.
We are working on rebuilding the cluster.
There should be no data loss.
I will be updating this post as more information is available.
Update
We have managed to bring Dyno up on the current db cluster, however, we are running with limited capacity. We've had several issues with restoring our cluster and creating a new one proved to be a challenge aswell (Moving the data specifically).
We will be working towards getting everything solved, meanwhile Dyno should function but with increased latency and possibly higher than normal error rates.
Even though we were silent since the last update, I'd like you guys to know we have been working on the issue the whole time, taking shifts to try and get everything running. We still are, in fact.
Again, I will be updating you guys as we move towards a solution. Thank you all for the patience
Update
We haven't given up on you guys, Dyno had a minor case of blowing up but we made some adjustments and it should be good for now.
Again, this is not a full solution but a temporary one. Dyno will still run on limited capacity but we don't wanna leave you all hanging. Thanks for all the support we've been getting
Update
Again, we've been head deep into this and thus the silence.
We are moving our database to another server, this process takes time and requires our services to be offline or else data would be lost.
Update
Discord introduced an issue with their last deploy and that's affecting a good part of the major bots. This is all the info we have right now. Discord devs are aware and working on a fix and I'll keep you guys updated. Small bots don't look like they are affected (Which is why Premium and Alpha are working fine). We are waiting for a resolution to resume the service.
Thank you all for the patience.
** Emergency Maintenence **
We are performing maintenence in the bot. I will post an update later with more details, service can be partially offline during this period. We currently have no ETA but are working as fast as possible to guarantee stability
Hello people, It's been rough for Dyno the past few days and we know things aren't going very smoothly. Turns out running a Discord bot at this scale has a few challenges.
Today/tomorrow we will be performing maintenence on our physical servers to get back on our feet and provide an uptime we can be proud of. We've been acting as quickly as we can, but I'm some nice 5000 km away from the servers and noob, while closer, still has to take around 400km of highways to arrive there. When things go from software to hardware, the logistics are quite more complicated. We didn't forget or ignore the issue at hand, we are just moving as fast as possible, and we know it isn't as fast as you guys wished it was. We are deeply sorry about that.
I will update everyone on this channel and on dyno-status as things change and updates are available. Thank you all for the support
