sure that works too but if we r going replay route, i usually ask a few preliminary questions
what rank r u
Ok
how much experience do you have with fighting games
what does frame data mean to you
how familiar are you with fighting game notation
Brand new. Just 4.5 -5 months. I also just started gaming just in general
I have been studying frame data and fighting game notation. Example: 5HP is standing HP
Frame data I’ve been learning about frame advantages and frame traps etc
For example Ryu 6HP is +3 on block. Ken’s heavy dragon lash is either +2 or +3 on block depending if blocked is crouching or standing
i havent played ken in awhile so i might have to fact check myself but, i think its +1 or +2. either way, doesnt matter and yes that is good to hear u have a solid understanding of those things
will make it a lot easier for us to communicate
and ur rank?
Sounds good
Bronze 3 stars. But I haven’t been playing ranked much the last 2 months. Just casual n custom
ahhh okay gotcha
in customs/casual, what rank of player do you find yourself competitive with
bronze?
or r u able to take on higher ranking players
Ya. I got frustrated with Rank cuz they just spam DI and I needed to learn to counter it lol
i only ask to assess ur current level of skill
Maybe Gold. I’ve won a few against low platinum also
nice!
I hold my own enough to avoid embarrassing myself lol
okay, i think it would be easiest for us to hop in a call if around later, about 10PM EST ish
otherwise, ill give u a writeup when im off work
which include some questions about your gameplan, and what replay to send me
ya np doesnt have to be a call either, i usually just write a blurb about you identifying your own gameplan, what tools you use, etc, and then asking you to send me a replay that embodies those things
I can’t tonite or tomorrow
yeah that works for me
yep exactly
Thank you!
i have a quick question when do u usually go for anti air normals i sometimes fail dp anti air on p2 side and get chunked so im considering aa normals as contigency plan
for ken
im ngl, i pretty much exclusively use dp for aa
so i cant give u much advice on that
other than to practice p2 side dps
maybe @mystic sedge or @hardy parrot have better advice for this
u could always air to air
if u mean what normal to use for aa, its probably Cr. HP
Yeah i mean like using cr hp more often to anti air but my friend says not worth cause u trade hits so ig its just more practice to dp then
Also im not good at air to air ngl i overuse heavy kick so i lose trade sometimes what buttons r u suppose to press for that
You dont trade if you time well. I tend to use cr.hp when im mental stacked and need to focus on other aspects of the game.
Air to air youd use j.mp
Ok yeah for mental stack i forgot the word ty
Do u ever use lights when air to air or its too little dmg to be worth only case i think u can use is if opponent spams lights too
jump back jab is common when denying crossups, for fastest possible button.
Jump forward air to air you go for j.mp so you can cancel into OD air tatsu
oh you're ken
you could cancel into tatsu but its up to you, j.mp puts them in a juggle state
Yeah u can cancel jumping mp to normal and ex air tatsu too on ken and it has good scaling for some reason like 100% both moves
Ok ill try doing air to air more cause cross cuts aint it when mental stacked lol
going for air to air when they forward jump imo is harder than just dping, so def consider how fast you have to react
up to you tho! Everything depends on context
I was wondering do u have tips against guile its supposed to be slightly guile favoured if im not wrong
Ken has slow overhead so when i meet turtles its really hard to damage them
throw them
ken's overhead is whatever
you open up turtles with strike/throw/shimmy
The other way to open up turtles is to do nothing.
Walk them to the corner, sit in your DP range and wait
if u r having a hard time specifically against guiles that are holding down back and completely stationary, it's pretty much what touch said
u have to get up close and threaten with offensive strings
but if u mean just guile turtling with sonic booms and his general gameplan, that's a bit different
Yeah ig not exactly turtling but just passive normal guile lol
okay it can help to identify what guile is generally trying to do
and also to identify when he does or doesn't have charge
typically, guile's are trying to do a slow boom at a range where they can drive rush behind it
to force you into a mixup
so you want to stay at a range where even if you block the light sonic boom, you can still check his drive rush afterwards
for identifying charge, it helps to know what buttons he can use/tends to use while holding down back
like cr. mk
cr. mp
cr. lp
sweep
if u see him use other buttons, you know he doesn't have a down charge to flash kick you
outside of these things
how well practiced you are with perfect parry
is really important in this MU
Yeah parrying booms at close range is hard
I just get annoyef cause u basically have to whiff punish every hit to deal dmg to these guys holding down back
ya it is
this is the MU tho
and guile risks himself when he throws a boom too close to you and you jump in
but yeah it's annoying af
slowly but it's getting somewhere
@sweet grove gameplan still not 100% incorporated but doing an aproximation of it in ranked showed some results
lets goooo
master after 50 hrs lets go
gonna go tank my mr now
all it took was to be low forward drive rush merchant
New Meta to BM on Akuma: You can sneak in a down taunt and still barely hit a Demon after stunning someone in the corner
Thanks boss cant wait to hit up some locals soon
took a bit of a break, back today
@sweet groveusing the gameplan made a juri one and done
i cant hitconfirm 2MP, i always flub it, especially when its a PC
i dont hitconfirm the cancel window of 2mp but can hitconfirm it for linking purposes. Are you tryna hitconfirm the cancel window
It is possible and youll have people telling you its easy but ignore them lmao i think its hard af
Agreed.
You can hit confirm that it was a counter hit and link into a crMK
Or hit confirm the second crMP fairly easily.
But the first one? Hard af
i just dont know what to do when I do 2MP, get a PC
and just dont' do anything with it since I can't link it to another 2MP
@mystic sedge
stand hp - 5HP
9
5
18
3
-3
19
You can hit StHP or crMK depending on range
what can I do from here?
only drc?
What's going on?
You got a pc crMP?
yeah
I don't think any button would reach
Yeah, accidental PC is hard to react.
Especuat that distance
At that distance you should be buffering DRC or heavy adamant
Because cr.mp would whiff if it didnt happen to whiff punish terry
So this should be you pressing with the intention of catching him whiffing or walking forward
If you pressed without buffering, youre just putting yourself at risk or are reading DI
So its not how do i convert, you should be pressing with the intent to convert at that range
Anyone have any decent spacing traps for Akuma? i feel like i get caught constantly in them but struggle to apply them myself. I have a couple that catch mashers, like 5MK, 5HP (if spaced correctly) punish counters jab mash and i just buffer h-adamant and confirm if it lands
Also resurrecting this post
Im glad you resurrected this post, because I am a silver Ken main looking for some help. I will look through this thread and see what is in here
As I am quite new to the game, I dont really have any combos down as of yet. Do you have any recomendations for combos I should be learning. For context, I usually do the mk target combo, or try to hit confirm st hp in heavy shoryuken (this one has been harder for me, as I am still working on my motion inputs. I will also send a replay or two later when I am on the game. THis is for Ken btw
Basic basic ken routes is basically jab confirms and cr.lp, st.mp st.hp TC xx run DP/Dragonlash/Tatsu
Okay gotcha. As for Dragonlash, I basically never use it, should I be implememnting that into my gameplan while I am in silver?
Mellow
And thank you for the advice by the way
a good person who recently did a bronze to 1600 masters guide
Musclenoob
really really helpful for a new ken player
0:00 - intro
3:05 -Rookie
8:02 - Iron
12:12 - Bronze
21:10 - Silver
Thank you Rusty. I will be sure to watch this
Gl mate ❤️
Dragon lash is primarily used to swap sides. At the present moment, it might not feel like getting cornered or cornering someone is very strong, but as you get better getting corner is insanely advantageous. Ken is the king at putting the opponent where he wants
So st.mp st.hp TC xx run dragonlash switches sides, and then you can h.shoryu or do any SA
Wow that is crazy. I will have to try that
maybe it won't be super effective for me until I get better in the corner, but I feel like it would still be beneficial to learn then
Yes the basic combo route ending in mp hp chin buster tc cancelled into his run shenanigans is core
so for the video Rusty sent me, I was trying to do one of the combos, cr. lp cr. lp st. lk, HDP. I have the bot to block after first hit, and often times the bot is able to block the stand light kick, and blocks the HDP every single time. Am I just timing these things ridiculously wrong or am I missing something? In the video it looked like a true combo but I could be mistaken
yea you're just timing it wrong sadly, that is a real combo
if you're finding that one too hard im of the opinion that you can just do 3 jabs instead, and you can learn the st.lk version later when(/if) you find the 3 jabs whiff a lot
Yes after further review, I have found I can do it very inconsistently. Time to grind
@hallow hare as Akuma i suppose?
for Ken
The thing there is that the jab doesn't cancel into the stLK, it's a link. So the timing is more strict
Hmm, i don't know but it might be the same
Thinking of starting another ranked grind and see where it goes. I was going to send updates of my MMR on a weekly basis with some replays of what I’m struggling with and come up with some ideas of how to fix it moving forward.
Hoping it might help me and some other. Just need to summon up some discipline
@gusty schooner hmu if you want some sets
Yeah mate for sure, I’ll be on later tonight and I’m down for some sets or this weekend
