Swinging Ape had the plot to all three games mapped out long before the even started work on the first, sierra had commissioned a trilogy and by god were they going to make it. Right up until activision bought swinging ape and canceled the whole series, scattering the dev team to the wind.

The only problem with Swingin' Ape Studios' devs was that they were too good not to get bought by Blizzard. They had only published one game at the time, and it was obviously Metal Arms: Glitch in the System

I'll say it louder for anyone who hasn't done more than a recursory glance at that "project." Those are assets from the publically available level kit on archive.org thrown into unreal engine. That specific version of Tanks A Lot only exists there.

Guy claims to have created all the assets himself despite the fact they're clearly ripped. Really disingenous and it's purely for views. When I commented on his video, he deleted my comment and blocked me from commenting again

Nightdive has 3 1/2 years, imho, to make a remake for the game's 25th anniversary if they can make a remake and do it on the anniversary. any word on if they are able to make a remake/remaster yet?

There's certainly nothing official, as the only games announced are System Shock 2's remaster and SiN's remaster (which is currently on the back burner while other projects are being worked on). There was a job listing a while back for a UE5 project which I would imagine is the team that made System Shock Remake, but that project hasn't been announced yet and I don't know what game that is.

As far as patterns go, it seems that something is usually announced at Quakecon each year and Stephen tends to offer interesting information on things on his personal socials (older info on his abandoned Twitter, newer info in Bluesky) such as him reaching out to Nintendo about Eternal Darkness and that not going anywhere.

The ideal situation is having access to: the source code with a chain of custody, willing business partners, available original devs to bounce ideas off, and developer enthusiasm. From my external perspective, the source code being leaked before the pandemic indicates that someone loves the game and kept the code, so that would be two of the things right there, so then it would be business dealings with Activision (since Microsoft isn't very top down when it comes to these things it's not just the existing connections from the id games, but that connection could help get the ball rolling with measurable data) and what else is already on Nightdive's plate.

If a game has a dream list fulfillment announcement, I would be under the impression that the publisher views that as satisfactory for creating a backlog revenue stream. (Examples would be Capcom's recent ports)

If it's already existing on gog for years, then I'd think that a remaster project would be possible.

Realistically, the community has already done all it has power to do. It got the attention of staff, which allowed staff to reconsider if this should be a project to pursue or not. Beyond that point it's all negotiations and contracts and such.

There are usually other stumbling blocks that commonly scuttle projects that Metal Arms avoids, such as missing source code (it's on archive, which means someone with chain of custody still has it) or ambiguous/hostile ownership (It's owned by vivendi, which makes the line simple: Vivendi-Activision-Microsoft)

The only real worry that would remain would be Microsoft's very recent moderate pivot away from gaming and toward Gen AI in terms of resources, but hopefully that can be overcome by the good results and reputation Nightdive has had with id properties so far

I grew up on the gamecube version but natively the og xbox version runs the best. Dolphin Emulator (Gamecube/Wii Emulator) is the definitive version because it gets the most support from the community, especially modding support
