I heard there were issues with people starting way before october and thus releasing much better stuff that people actually playing within the rules couldn't compete with. And since the prizes were things like the valve index and stuff, it was no small issue

that's unfortunate. always felt like spookality had a bit of extra oomph than a normal jam because everyone knows about it well ahead before it's ever announced. it allows for extra creativity when players can reliably start building their map in advance knowing what's to come. i think downgrading it will lose that extra creativity, and while normal jams are fine, they're definitely limited to the more rushed format and maps aren't allowed to flourish as much.

nonetheless there's no harm in sending a report that way, it'll be more definitively seen

When you upload a world to the jam you upload the world id, when you update a world using the same id the world gets updated automatically in the jam

ah, switching platforms isnt really an option for me, takes a long long time to do that. this year it wasn't too much of an issue for me, different hierarchys, but last year i wasn't aware that they had to be identical, so i had made some changes that i didn't even think about which was a huge problem lol

basically forced me to create that export json script so i could locate the differences because it could have been in a million different places

once i got to the point where the world was almost done i would copy the project/convert to android, i still had a couple weird quirks, like when i converted to android unity actually changed a bunch of things around automatically in the hierarchy. was really weird

was hopin there was something i didn't know about to compare hierarchys a bit easier haha. the json thing can still be a lil tricky

This is the closest thing I can find towards there being that sort of requirement, but I don't think that's what this really means. Rules are like that are some what unenforceable. Someone could easily submit something they've been working on in secret for months or years with minor changes to fit the rest of the rules and no one would really know. And probably more importantly, a lot of people reuse a lot of stuff between models. (Sometimes I find random mesh attributes that are from stuff I've made 5+ years ago on my new stuff) I've notice lots of game jams have dropped that rule and just say it to make something generally new or fresh.

basically my project is a deliberately short avatar. i could scale it up but i genuinely think it would loose a bit of its expressive power if i did.

first im wondering how strict that rule is given the "should be" rather than "must be"
im also wondering if this height is measured by avatar bounding box, height of the avatar mesh or by the height of the viewpoint...

I haven't quite submitted my avatar yet, I'm making it as customizable as quest allows and am having 1-1 parity between quest and PC so (as a fallback) Quest players will get to enjoy and see everything PC players see for the fallback ^^ (and have some low poly props to mess with using blend shape tomfoolery as well), Will this affect anything judging wise?

Just a question, I used inverted normals on the visor so that you wouldn't see any clipping for the 2d facial expressions that use an emission map, is that appropriate? I've used inverted normals before in my designs, just making sure that it doesn't affect continuity!

I made it have a fixed cubemap reflection so that it doesn't break in any worlds (some world designers forget to bake their cubemaps)
Would judges perfer that quest and PC users can customize the primary (in this case) and secondary (also in this case, emissives) colors?
It would make use of removing redundancies (e.g. having multiple uploads of the same avatar in different colors pre-AV3)

Its an open species call the protogen, you are allowed to create your own and distribute copies of created characters as long as they are self made (In this case, from scratch!)
It was an open species created in response to the upsurge in the popularity of their privatized species that was characteristically a lot more "robotic", the creator of the protogen concept is Malice-Risu.

It is a animal-cybernetic protogen, with 1-1 Quest to PC parity, meaning every feature and trait present on one platform is compatible with the other (besides Poiyomi Pro for PC to make it look consistent in different lighting conditions) It features:
-Custom designed cartoon icons for the SDK3 menu.
-RGB Emissive customization using radial menu.
-Customizable fur color.
-Semi-2D visemes with lip sync and colored facial emotes based on hand gestures.
-Contact receiver interactions on the nose for interactivity.
-3 optimized physbone components on the ears and tail, respectively.
-Inverted hull mesh (Thank you Faxmachine <3 for clarification) for the face plate.
-Extensive Color and Body customization, including changing gender, leg proportions, tail spikiness, etc.
-FBT Compatible armature.
-Optimized and clean quad-mesh made using poly-building rather than sculpting via blender, ~9800 polys
-Excellent performance rank on PC and Good performance rank on Quest. (with respect to maintaining already minimal physbone use)
-VRAM usage according to each platforms limitations set by the VRC Team..
-Humanoid-focused body proportions.
-A RGB Hue-shift option compatible with both platforms that slowly transitions between all colors.
-The rather silly long snoot button (made a button so it doesn't become a nuisance) making use of the SDK 3.0.
I spent several dozen hours from start to finish on this avatar, and wanted it to be an optimized and fun character for all VRChat users to enjoy.

bakery took a while even with a good GPU, I used substance to remove any continuity issues that might arise due armature deformations, I might try mixing the AO with it so that seams will be less obvious

also there's a difference in how Blender and Unity show the number of vertices - Blender shows the number of geometric vertices, whereas Unity shows the number of logical vertices, which is the actual number of vertices your GPU has to render
Seams, having multiple normals on a vertex, multiple vertex colors on the same vertex, etc can result in a geometric vertex being split into two or more logical vertices

I added a toggle for the color emotes and smoothed the transitions for them, so it looks much nicer on the eyes.

I unfortunately cannot make the deadline for the Avatar Jam due to irl schedules and me hearing about the Jam only this past Wednesday.
It was something I thankfully had the idea for several months prior but was finally able to work on it this past Friday. It's fully modeled, rigged, and textured, but doesn't yet have its lip sync or expressions. I'm still impressed with how far I got.

Here are the specs
Tris: 5,716, would be more than ready for PC and Quest
PhysBones: 4-7, depending on if the hat and/or tail got physics, specifically on the Quest upload
Textures: 1, 1024 x 1024 pixels
Materials: 2, one for the main body, and the other to make the illusion eyes shadeless

I couldn't stay up to finish it last night as I had work in the morning, but I didn't want to upload something I didn't feel was ready. Should I just upload it as a public avatar once it's ready outside of the jam, or will these Avatar Jams be held a bit more often?

Hey I need some help. I just finished my model for the Jam and was about to submit it (wanted to get it as perfect as I could) but the submissions were closed. When I check the website this morning it said that it would be open until Midnight tonight but I just checked and they changed it to noon... Is there a way I could still submit since the time was changed last minute? I have been working hard on this model for the past weeks to get this prepped...

IIn that case I'll give my PC version a shader work-over update in an hour or two, because I worked with the restrictions of quests platform for both while trying to achieve the best and consistent visuals, but maybe that doesn't always matter ^^'

If you do all the thumbnail in unity, you can add pos processing to the camera and add anti aliasing. Will have less shimmering on the edge of mesh.

but the one thing I dislike about avatars with all this customization, is you lose your preset if you ever wanna play around with the avatar's other randomizing bits

I have room to make a Slot 1 and Slot 2, and I'd love to add that sometime in the future! That way you can have the character you made and a fallback incase you wanna revert to your old one

essentially- just duplicate all the layers, and dupe your parameters with a "Slot 2" distinction to them

@wanton halo or any other dev, I once saw a neat little trick, if you have a controller in the animator slot, it will run that in the preview in the VRC menu, but won't run in when using the avatar, will use this for a neat little trick to make it do a cool lil dance in the VRC menu ^^
