Not really any point in manually changing the max size to 512x512 either. Unity automatically handles that when the textures native resolution is lower than the maximum.

if the asset is ever replaced later greater than 2048, it will be loaded as 2048. Otherwise, no.

Typically it's done to cap the resolution so you can use crazy high resolution source images without scaling them down just for unity

usually i always export textures at 2k, 4k, or 8k if theyre high quality but u can reduce the resolution in unity if not much detail is lost
and it will reduce the file size
increasing the resolution is useless since it just scales to whatever the lowest resolution is
either of the image or of the setting
thats why its called max size anyway, but crunch compression is good for reducing size also
I compressed a 147 frame spritesheet to 2.7mb with very minimal quality loss. Each frame has small text in it and is still very readable in-game

hey sorry for the late reply, but I don't have any screenshots unfortunately ;-;. It's basically just a robotic hand on one side and a normal hand on the other side. Typically the hand is pretty stylized with effects and stuff. I've seen it in many different forms but its very much the same base. Thanks for replying btw and its okay if you don't know where to find this model ^^
i have textures that used to be 4k exported with crunch compression, really good quality when i downscaled to 2k in unity, and also took like 3 MB i think even with mip mapping
Well ideally you should be compressing textures to less than 1024 if they're not an atlas
But yeah you can do some pretty good stuff with compression

metal scratches and the subtle bumps of the surface

Remember, VRChat isn't a movie. Everything doesn't have to be super HD fidelity with no pixels anywhere. It's VR. You have to respect realtime rendering rules and RAM usage

I compress every one of my avatars to 10mb or less no matter what I have on it. I have major textures compressed to less than 20kb to save as much space as possible

You can do that with particles
Particles can be meshes and have collisions that let them die and spawn child particles, as well as play sounds
Just set the emission to 0 and max particles to 1, then with an animation change the emission value so it emits one

Seems as if the new update messed with jaw flap bones. Mine, even when mic is muted, is slightly open. In Unity it does not appear to be open when previewing the "closed" state but in the game it is.
Regardless though, it's only local that this happens. It appears normal for other people.
I've heard of this happening with visemes as well (specifically the 'it looks bad for me but it's fine for other people' part)
flap bones are doing it now. i dont have any facial expressions that control my mouth, so its just lip sync that's screwing it

The biggest issue with non-humanoid avatars is finding good animations for them that don't look jank af

I just uploaded my model and now it's stretched beyond recognition into the sky and the camera zooms all over the place from simply looking around
What the heck happened to my model?? It looks completely fine in Unity in play mode and everything, even lets me line up the camera to take a pic during the upload period

@harsh raven I'm not sure if this is the issue or not, but worth a shot. Do you have any kind of colliders on the model? Having any sort of collider on the model that is not marked "is trigger" can cause weird issues like that. I've never seen it cause that issue specifically but I know that with colliders there's really no telling.

You can set it as cutout with a transparent texture, or better get a “no render” shader off the unity store

If you want it invisible in unity and vrchat even if people have your shaders disabled, use standard fade setting with zero alpha, black, with specular turned off, and make sure the mesh renderer component on the object itself has shadow casting/receiving turned off

I'm wondering how the melee system is set up because my melee weapons are killing me when I toggle them on
I have the damage particles go through the blade of my melee weapons
I'm not really familiar with that but if it involves particle collision, it could be a layer issue. Maybe you need to set your particles up to collide with only the player layer? Your own body is on the "playerlocal" layer, if you left your collision settings default they would collide with "everything", which would include yourself.
I understand that, the pvp system has melee classes like brawler, tank, assault, and probably assassin
so I'm wondering how their combat abilities are setup to not hurt themselves
I don't know what this pvp system is but if it uses particle collision it'll be the layer configuration that I mentioned

@hazy oar So I actually know the people who worked on that system, according to one them the way you avoid hitting yourself, you literally turn off the particle locally for you
vrc has a built in boolean parameter named "IsLocal" that's only true if you're wearing the avatar and isn't synced across the network
I have yet to try this out myself but it seems to work for them

Hi guys im looking everywhere for 1 avatar. It's an avatar of anime girl (probably loli) that can tranform using reactions. 2 sets of tranformations 1 wings transformation that calls drones scaning the area gives her big energy shield in left hand and gun in the right hand that she can shoot.
Second transformations slowly turns floor into red grid like blueprint. everything is durring epick song while she does this.

Anyone know of any good shaders that are good for metallic surfaces? Cause polmoi or what ever its called doesn't really convey the subttle details in the metal as well as standard shaders, but some worlds make my characters that use standard shaders Incredibly dark when they have metalics applied
try using standart shader with metalic set to 70% strenght
its my guess but i think it should help

The avitar will have a animation where it snaps its own head and the head spins slowly a full 360 and then comes to a stop and it will have hidden lights that show in the dark plus it needs some kinda Aura around it

Well, all your locomotion is technically just a blend tree state in the locomotion layer, so you could make a toggle that switches off of that state
But no there's no way to toggle that setting specifically

Anyone think it's weird that stealing models from video games is more acceptable than stealing models from each other in this game?
It's not condoned, but nothing bad really happens unless a DMCA takedown gets sent their way.
Even then, it's nearly impossible to stop with how much this game relies on user-generated content.
You have people who ask for vrchat to make it not possible to rip other users avatars, and they even have a report option for stolen avatars. But nothing would be said about a ripped Mario model. (Other than don't talk about getting the model)
Mostly because people don't care if a model was taken from another game, they are only concerned if their original art gets stolen.

There's a huge difference between using game assets and using someone's private model? Using a game asset is similar to wearing a t-shirt with the companies logo on it lol

Paid for the game too, every company has their own individual stance on it, but most from what I've seen enjoy content created by their users regardless if its from scratch or using in game assets
When you buy the game, you aren't buying the rights to the assets
You get the finished product
They don't just give you the model, you have to extract it.
Some companies do give you the models. Like I said, broad generalizations are difficult since companies do things differently
Nintendo is a specific case since they hate user made content usually. Also definitely not 99%, thats purely anecdotal.

also the video game artists are paid with salaries so they already got their money from the models whereas vrchat Avatar creators are dealing in direct sales of avatars
most of the time companies could care less about ripped assets
unless theyre affecting copyright, impacting sales, or making bank, its not usually something they care about
the developers usually give their rights to the asset to the company also so the individual doesnt have much control over that
also the company released a game, the character is a part of that game, its not the same as someone releasing a character cuz that wouldn't just be ripping, but also piracy/theft

Even if the models weren’t ripped, if they were simply fan recreations, they’d still be copyright infringement. All fanart is, companies just don’t act on it because it would be received very negatively.

Another late reply to this that I'm surprised no one mentioned, is simply the aspect of personal identity that frequently comes into that question regarding VR-Chat.
Mario is Mario. If someone rips a Mario model and wears it around the game, it's little more than a cosplay.
If someone rips the personal avatar from someone, regardless of whether that avatar is a 100% from scratch work, or a relatively basic MMD edit, it's still someones adopted identity.
For many many users, there's a massive sense of personal insult and violation attached to that.
It's like if someone could steal your physical likeness IRL, and go around slandering your image. For many it's a deeply unsettling concept, enough to make them avoid any risk of it at all costs.
This aspect is obviously specific to actual private personal avatars, and is somewhat different for public avatars or people who don't maintain a consistent identity in their avatars.

Bone wise you need at least three bones coming off of each hand. You don’t need to model anything on them they just need to exist in the armature even if it’s not part of the model

If I get your meaning correctly, sort of yes.
You can use a custom fall off curve to make it only audible at a certain range.
Eg, 0% volume out to 10 meters, then it raises before falling off again.
Bear in mind that range limits in VR-Chat might interfere with it at longer ranges. I've not done anything with audio in a while so am rusty on the specifics.

If you want to reliably test an audio source without needing to bug friends to run back and forth to give you impressions of it, would probably help to put the audio source on a fixed world object.
is there a way to make it so a toggled animation overrides all other animations until its toggled off?
for example I have this screen, set to different expressions with my hand gestures (Index Controllers) but I have a toggle that makes this screen do an old windows blue screen of death, but when that BSOD is toggled on my hand gestures still change the screen to the expressions
if you use the idle animation switches to toggle the bsod, you could set all other shape keys to 0 in that idle

If it's just a model you can use it with either, but if it comes with assets you can just for example, create an SDK3 project and import the package and see if it comes with expression parameters/menu or any custom controllers. If it has an avatar descriptor attached the script will also be broken if it's the wrong SDK. But there's (most likely) no reason you couldn't adapt an SDK2 package for SDK3 if you wanted to by just using any provided animation clips in SDK3 controllers

manual atlasing requires that you manually unwrap the objects into a 2nd uv map
which u can make in the same window where u can edit shapekeys
and then u can use Cycles to bake the textures onto the new uv map

I would like to have a idle animation for my avatar when I'm using desktop mode. I animated one in Blender and imported and configured the targeting and created a mask layer. No matter what I do my avatars arms are ether not in the correct pose or it is in the correct pose but my hand gestures are not working. Hey there. So I have two issues

I have an issue with animations. When I use the action menu using animations, the animation stops and starts immediately, as in, it starts, then immediately stops, and repeats the pattern until I toggle it off. For the introduction transition, it has no exit time, and a condition of "VRCEmote" that equals a number based on whatever the action menu has as a toggle. For the ending transition, it has no exit time, and has a condition of "VRCEmote" that equals a number based on whatever the action menu has as a toggle, which is also the same as the introduction transition of that emote. The emote itself is a looped animation.

I have another issue with animations. One of my animations has a toggle for a pillow to appear behind the head as they're laying down. Unfortunately, through each of the other animations in the set, it appears for them too, even though in those other animations, there doesn't have an "is active" property in the animation.

Basic question to make sure I've been doing this right: When updating to the latest SDK, is it proper I just open my unity project. Import asset, select the newly downloaded file, and poof..done? It should overwrite/update anything that has changes yeah?
No, at least, unless it's changed since release. You have to rebuild your avatars from scratch with AV3. I haven't tried it, but installing AV3 in a project that had AV2 will cause issues. @proper idol

It takes anywhere between 24-72 hours of playtime to get to New User rank, depending on many factors. Adding friends (even more so if they send you the request), and not getting blocked by people speeds up the process.

2.0 only lets you replace the default animations
3.0 lets you substitute your own entire animation controllers and behaviors and have menus trees and controls for the avatar. It also has better eye tracking control.
If none of that makes sense you, you are free to use 2.0, it’s simpler.

if you create 2 versions (1 with dynamic for PC and 1 without for quest) and both of them use same ID then yes
avatars have to be uploaded twice for cross compatibility
pc users see the pc only version, quest users see the quest only version

From the any node, have it so:
0 is neither
1 is hat
2 is glasses
3 is both
If you don't want to combine animations for some reason, you would need 2 layers, you should just create a new animation for the combination to keep it all on one layer.
if 3 = equal 1+2 , enable 1 and 2

Use seperate layers for each object then, and just use 2 conditions on transition , then you can enable a bunch same time without making more animations

and make sure to use the appropriate state behaviors for disable/re-enable tracking and blending

I had similar issues and I just had to subdivide the mesh so there were more polys. That way when you do the data transfer it can get more information about the weights of the body.

only reason i know anything is because a friend helped me out early on. and they hated the doc aswell.

I'm not brand new to any of these concepts or tools. I work mostly with UE4 but I've worked with Unity in the past, admittedly not with the animation side very much however. My wife is a professional 3D modeler and is providing the models for us, so I'm only concerned with rigging and in-engine stuff. I don't mind if knowledge of something else is implied, I mean it's an API basically. I wouldn't get annoyed if OpenGL docs didn't explain the basics of C++, which they don't.
But, what it does do is provide lots of visual examples of how features interact with the API, and really detailed breakdowns of how some features work behind the scenes. Normally that's more than anyone will need, but sometimes it's crucial for understanding things like performance optimization. There really isn't much of that in the VRC documentation, but I realize that ultimately it's just a videogame, not an enterprise-level graphics pipeline or something lol
And i'll admit I was actually a bit wrong, after exploring the wiki a bit more I found quite a bit more info relevant to avatars sort of spread around
I've just kinda been compiling my own notes as I've found stuff, maybe if I don't suck at this one day I'll write my own guide instead of just complaining ¯_(ツ)_/¯

You can modify the mesh but its done after you use a modifier. I honestly barely use any modifiers
like its the only way to move stuff around, theres no "press button move mouse, click" its all just gizmos
I love using the gizmos. Theres keyboard shortcuts to move stuff around certain ways. Holding C will snap the object to a Curve and similar stuff like that
well, all I mean by that is just because of the amount of nice shortcuts in blender the simple stuff gets done much faster in blender than in maya
but there are definitely some things I would love from maya in blender
for animation and rigging maya is just so much better

One leg's higher than the other.
Applied all transforms, visuals and objects.. Fixed model with Cats..
Made sure all the bones were.. symmetrical, Using the Vertical Armature for it, no Fullbody Hacks.
Did away with those and never actually used any of 'em.

You can but its not recommended to convert a 2.0 project to a 3.0 project
as it usually breaks everything
replacing the sdk isnt the only thing that has to be done

So the documentation says to keep things around 70,000 polygons, but how many do you think the average model actually has? I rarely see high performance models in VRC, especially not for decent quality stuff
i guess what im asking if anyone knows the "categories" 70k is obviously best case, but how hard is it to go from "best" to "moderate" to "low" ect
If it's an anime model it needing more than like 50k - 60k is already a bit excessive.
One of my friends for some reason doesn't believe that the 70k poly limit is warranted, despite what Oculus says about performance targets in Unity. Instead claiming that polygons on avatars of 160k or so is completely fine. In-fact I see him and a decent amount of his friends run around with over 120k poly models quite a bit.
Basically what I'm saying is that what somebody sees the average as for polygons really depends on their group and how they see the situation.
Ah okay thanks, of course it's all cumulative as well i suppose, you can probably have a lot of polygons if you don't have dynamic bones or crazy shaders, and you could probably have some dynamic bones or shaders if you go easy on the polygons I imagine
You can have a lot of polys but it's not going to be good for a world with quite a lot of people.
We where just adding some pretty straight forward hair to a model and the polygon count was shooting up into space lol already reduced it to about half the count but was wondering if people really try to hit that 70k limit like a religion or if its more of a guideline

I would actually propose that most avatars these days don’t even have worlds.
If you want an avatar someone else is wearing and they have their cloning off, the best way to get it is to ask them if they can turn their cloning on.

Animation controllers are literally state machines and they can read values, evaluate them, branch based on them, and set values via parameter drivers

If you can emulate something turing complete (redstone) you are also turing compete

I've been fussing with the Vroid thing too, I've gotten it into Unity but I've not been able to upload it or anything.
it seems the latest vroid to vrc script is bad, does someone have an older version?
@neon finch use CATS blender plugin in blender to import the .vrm from Vroid studio and fix it up, then you can export it as an FBX

Join the VR traders discord, there is a channel for free avatar requests. But honestly I felt the same way and just watched YouTube tutorials until I could do it myself. I even added cool 3.0 features like changing my clothes and toggling a HUD

Is there a better way to publish avatars cross-platform than copying over the folder and changing the build target? It would be nice to be able to just import a rigged model into both of my projects separately and have them reference the same avatar vs having to go through the process of copying everything and changing the build target each time.

u cant but there are some tricks u could use like making one folder that links to another
good if ur making animators that work on both of the models
that or just have both projects open, a quest version and a pc version of project
and copy paste stuff from one to the other in file explorer

youre not supposed to
you have to publish them to the same avatar
so that they are supported for both versions
i recommend making 2 projects, one for quest, one for PC
then u can share assets between them
without needing to convert the whole entire project each time
Sorry, I still don't understand. I can copy over the FBX, sure, but publishing the same model on different platforms gives me two different avatars, both of which are exclusive to a single platform. Is the avatar data stored somewhere that I'm missing?

the blueprint ID is the asset id for the avatar
anything you publish to that ID is published to that asset
so if you make a quest and a pc version with same ID
it uploads each version for each platform to the same asset
same for worlds
So to do that I would have to detach the pipeline and then enter in the avatar ID manually, right? I tried that earlier and it didn't seem to be working but I'll have to try again

so of course if theres nothing there it has to generate somewhere to place your new asset
and that gets stored in the pipeline id

Has anyone tried adding more emotes than 8? i tried adding more to the Actions controller by adding new conditions (ex. VRCEmote Equals 10) I'm guessing there's still a limit?
Smol question but, Im a quest 2 user whos had a hard time finding an avatar that they really like, and I know Quest users cant upload an avatar from the web. But I was wondering if I found an avatar online I liked or had one made, is it possible for me to have a pc player upload it for me so I can get it in game?
Or do I have to hope I find a public world that has one I enjoy?
You can get someone to upload it for you yes although it's not recommended you should keep your avatars on your account
If you have a PC, you can upload it yourself. You don't need a particularly strong PC to run the Unity Editor.
The limit with the default variable would be 255. By default the example controller uses 9-16 for seated emotes for you would have to start at 17 or repurpose the transitions a bit. Make sure to check the couple of states before the emotes because by default the conditions also only check for values below 17. It's easy to modify, just have to think about how you want the logic to work and modify the transitions a little
