you can't really without using cutout or some sort of transparency. It'd be the most efficient way, the other way involves actually modeling that hair out with polys but that can quickly get out of control with the amount of polys you'd need for that. So either that or stick with a "clay like hair"

also I would note that someone logging into someone else's account to upload avatars is against terms of service so there's not literally any legal way to get an avatar without a computer

and it looks like they uv mapped a "water" texture to give the impression of water
that is a perfect example of some clever artistry, and whoever did that also understand rendering very well
Indeed, Inverted normals is a great way for fake transparency on Quest, done right and it can look really good.
inverted hulls can be used to do outlines as well

well i tried the inveted face for my slime girl but i wasnt happy with the result
especially in the face, seeing inside the head was horrible
so i simply used matcap but now she look like a metal slime girl

put your goo Shader material on a sphere so you could take a picture of it to turn into a matcap
the problem is if i do this all the body will have only one color (that matcap) no more darker hair and ears, nor melted feets
i could assign different material for hair and ears ig
you could set your Goo Shader on the sphere to just be Gray
as mainly you're just trying to capture the specular highlights
and the rim lighting

going to be a bit tricky to get it to look quite right since your base texture might require some modifying as you cannot have specular highlights show up if the base color of the madcap is white
well i'm pc anyway, so i don't really mind if my quest version is not perfect
I think its important to mention also (just in case) that you won't get the quest version to match 1:1 with the PC

and I might suggest also brightening up your base color texture of a quest version so that when it gets multiplied with the matcap it doesn't get too dark
I suppose brightening the matcap would help with that as well
there's only so bright you can make the matcap before you eat the specular highlights

Was told by another user , that upload was limited to 12 on quest (transforms not bones) since yesterday. Avatars not updated are not affected. Can confirm I did an update yesterday on quest , quest user complains my bones are only on two places on my body while I had them on multiple/more.then two under the quest limits

Any idea why a model shows no support for Windows or Quest even though everything is setup correctly? The SDK won't tell me what's causing the issue. I have previous revisions of the model that have updates correctly. The only change I made was making an atlas for the UV map + Textures. Importing the older versions of the model have the same issue where it won't show support for either.

Quest lacks any shader with cutout, the only fix is to get that avatar into blender and manually cut out the black part, using the knife tool.
Update to my original question. Somewhere between me changing and merging the UV maps, going from 2 single maps to a custom atlas it broke the avatar completely and between the start and the end of it I'm unsure of what's causing the model to break completely.

Quest shaders cannot use transparency so anything that's transparent is turning solid black

VRChat on Quest 2 has 4GB of RAM (that also works as VRAM) to play with, I reguarly use more than 16GB of RAM and 8GB of VRAM on PC.
we are talking about 10 MB, not 100MB or 1000MB...

The primary reason behind Quest users crashing is using up that RAM.

a quest 1 would bottleneck everything by the limitations.
Don't think that has been confirmed, but if it does then it just means Quest 3 owners will crash less, which is good. But VRChat would be dumb to change that upload size because that would ruin the experience for Quest 2 owners entirely.
The Quest 1 has been unusable for a long time, it was not hindering the Quest version at all, the Quest 2 is the bottleneck and has been for a long time.
Quest 1 is slower than quest 2, so its a larger and worse bottleneck than quest 2... right?
VRChat stopped considering the Quest 1 as a bottleneck, which is what left it in such a unusable state.

The Quest 2 is still to be sold alongside the Quest 3 so it gets a bit more complicated, but they will pressumably change the limitations whenever they see that the Quest 2 is barely used by users.
That will most likely be quite a bit into the Quest 4's lifespan.

rando question but when it comes to questifying your avatars is it better to just make a copy of the og unity scene and make it quest or is it better to just switch builds on the pc unity scene.
If you don't need to make major changes for it to be quest compatable, you are best off switching builds on the PC unity scene. If there are more major differences, you should make a separate copy of the og unity scene.
How do I get shading and specular reflections to appear on a quest avatar? Whenever I use any of the quest shaders, my avatar looks very flat and un-shaded. The only quest shader that appears shaded and reflective is the Matcap shader, but you can't do normal maps and a matcap at the same time. Is there a way to get shading on an avatar with a normal map supporting shader?

hey so uhm. I was attempting to find a folder that did not come with the creator companion, and attempted to spawn in an Avatar Dynamic Robot to see if i could find that file in there. However it got rid of my other avatar that I had already rigged and such. I closed unity and asked it to NOT SAVE,,,, though upon reopening, its still there with my avatar being gone. Dear lord. Please tell me it didnt override without me asking it to.

The ball generally just has to be inbetween the eyes. If you have an HMD, try moving your head up and down to see if you crouch or float despite not moving. If you do, try moving the ball in the head or a bit out untill it's right.

Rainhert has a guide on YouTube, it can scim over some details but it can help, I recommend not trying to do a really detailed avatar and get used to the programs. You can also look at booth for free avatars and edit them (If it's allowed by the creator)
Hello there, if anyone skilled on unity making avatars quest compatible, i would be really glad to use some help on advice, please.
Long story short, i want to make avatar compatible for quest (from pc avatar), originally it's on poi/poi_pro, i got textures and meshes already done by someone else, but when i uploaded everything and connected to pc, my friend with quest headsed said avatar broken, all skin textures goes white. but if friend turn avatar off/on it's getting normal/working for a second, then it's turns completely white again, and also little 3d model spinning in avatar selection screen of avatar also looking normal, for some reason. Anything i can try to do to fix my avatar ?
unfortunately Poi isn't compatible with quest/mobile. You'll need to go through each object that uses shaders and change it to VRChat -> Mobile -> toon Lit (1st picture).
you'll also have to change your environment to Android, you can do that with the VRChat SDK. You essentially have to upload 2 different versions of your avatar one for PC and one for quest.
well, i did both, it's not my first compatible avatar i upload from pc and quest version and i know how to connect them and switch to android.
Usually i use VRCQuestTools to convert everything into quest-compatible equivalent. I just checked as well, every single object using shader toon lit, no exceptions.
But problem still there, after loading my avatar by quest users, literally after half second - for them my avatar body turns all white, only clothes stays same. And i have no idea why it happens
and most strange thing that if they turn my avatar off and on again, for split second, my avatar looks normal, all textures and shaders working as intended

Okay, for some reason i'm only getting one error and i can't find the cause of it, the error says this:
"Avatar uses unsupported shader Standard-DoubleSided". You can only use the
shaders provided in VRChat/Mobile• for Ouest avatars."
I've pressed the select button but all it does is select the root of the avatar, i've looked in all the elements of the avatar and no shader of that type has shown up. Is there a way to fix this?
Go thru all parts of avatar and look what shaders it's using, if there's anything beside the ones provided in VRChat -> Mobile - change it to something from there

I even checked the parts that wouldn't have the shader
Try open/expand error part, and look, sometimes it's showing path to materials/problem, also, if it's saying any material names or anything beside "DoubleSided" - try search by any given names in assets / avatar parts / shaders etc
Or, you also can try using tool to convert all shaders into quest ones (mobile), called VRCQuestTools, i'm using it, works most of times

have there been any changes to quest 2 performance requirements recently? ive uploaded a few avatars and on one of them my friends are unable to see the props, though when i use my own quest 2 i can perfectly see all 12 props, but i havent yet downloaded a vrchat update on my quest 2 so i thought maybe one of the recent updates changed performance requirements

yea i know about that , since the sdk wouldnt let me upload it if it was over 10MB , im just really confused by the fact that when i use my quest 2 i can see the avatar props but my friends cant
then first option, choose avatar by top right corner button, just as sdk if there problems, on top of menu would be "select/autofix" buttons, click those, if given, or read what it says, if no problems found, go on bottom of menu and click convert. You may find that some shaders or textures not working or missing, in that case, you need manually fix them. Not a big problem. Tool creates quest version of project and hides original one so just find problematic materials and copy them, then manually change their type to tool lite or standart lite, put inside shaders/textures anything that was in original avatar (if there slot for that, if not just skip) for eyes and other transparent stuff use particles/multiply (it's makes things transparent but works only for things without bones at all as people said to me). If anything works fine from start, just do work with avi quest version that tool created, try upload that one or do what need, and stuff

Flatout: No. You need a computer for some of this stuff, namely running VRC and creator companion.
maybe you could 3D model on Iphone, but to rig and do other stuff a PC is a neccessity

[Question] - Have some PC users noticed that certain quest avatars are semi seethrough, I saw this last night quite a bit with a group of new Quest users that some were using the Ready Player Me avatars.
They appear totally dark in the room until they get close to a bright lighting probe, when they will be obviously seethrough.
I haven't seen anything like that, atleast if you're referring to pc vr, idk about the Desktop version, I haven't really used that in about a year. But it most likely is just that someone messed up the shaders on the pc versions of those avatars

look through every part of you avatar in the hierarchy it has to be there somewhere
make sure to look through the entire avata- what they said
another useful way to do it, is to look in the materials folder and change the shaders on the materials itself

In Unity
back when i first started in unity i would shrink the head bone to .001
then you shrink the hip bone of the other avatar that you want the head from to .001 and scale the head bone on that one up to 100
then just drag and drop the head into the other armature on the head bone
Though i would suggest just learning blender cause that method ^ is going to make your avatars performance plummet

vrchat does not Auto convert from one platform to the other so you have to upload your avatar twice

Hey, y'all. I'm making my second Avatar ever, and it's been a year or two. So pardon my dust. I'm running into a problem when importing my .fbx file to unity. It rotates my object's armature by 90 degrees, and I can't find a way to fix this. Heres what it looks like in VRC and Unity, I hope this makes the issue clear. From what I can tell, the viewport is in the right place and moving appropriately to the head bone, but when I rotate and move the Avatar just t-pose moves in those directions.

Check if the shaders match for the quest version, also make sure no other avatars are causing problems with the one you are trying to upload

For some reason trying to do outlines with the inverted normals method ends up looking fine in blender but in Unity it shows the outline covering the whole model.
What causes this?

im simply importing it from blender to unity
the method works fine on other models
what i've found out is that importing it without the armature makes the outline show up fine so i redid the whole armature and tried again but same issue
no idea why having an armature is causing it
dumb fix but i ended up just flipping normals in blender so that it shows the outline covering it incorrectly in Blender instead.
now it looks fine in Unity but that's such a dumb fix.

thats weird ive seen em before on avis
if that is so then those were uploaded with a modded SDK
which would be against TOS of VRC
why?
VRC intentionally imposes those limitations so that performance doesn't have to suffer so poorly
the basis of VRC is user generated content
and generally people are not good when it comes to optimizing
so I don't blame them for imposing those restrictions, but also it is true also for the quest itself in that it struggles with transparency performance wise

wish I had the photo saved but someone made a quest avatar that had a fish bowl as their head, and "faked" transparency on it by using an inverted hull sphere, and some other clever artistry to fake it

transparency isn’t allowed for a reason. You can make stuff completely invisible with particle shaders, but not semi-transparent

i mean you could use matcap with a matcap texture but in all reality quest shaders are limited, most you could do is make your texture sheets better, also standard lite gives you a few more shading options
Pretty sure in the future we will get better stander lite shader, since it was shown in a beta announcement.

We do not entirely know how the system works, on purpose.
You can get the ability to upload avatars if you pay once for VRC+, it gives a permanent, one time boost.

make sure the mesh isn't attached to the head (the bone can be, but the mesh render can't)
the reason for this is any mesh (cube, sphere, etc) that is directly attached to the head will be invisible to the wearer
if that doesn't work, make it run locally and make a huge af sphere attached to the neck that goes out far enough to where near clip doesn't make it invisible

Most likely it is a combination of too many materials and/or the textures are too large. The materials can only really be fixed inside of Blender or Maya, but the textures can have their resolution lowered. If any are 4K or higher, definitely lower their resolution. Even for PC, 4K can be considered a lot or overkill. If they are 2k and mostly consist of solid colors, you can easily get away with 1k or even 512 without much detail loss

Set your fbx as humanoid, and where the fbx is, click the arrow, and then there should be a greenish blue person looking thing to put in the avatar slot

How thick are the outlines?
I tried to make em thick enough to be easily noticeable, but not overwhelming
this is an example of it put on an avatar I did. This is the Quest version using that matcap
Medium performance rank as well, only held back by a slightly too high poly count. Otherwise it woulda been Good performance rank
but if you do use it and like it but the lines are too thick or something, you can quite literally take that matcap into any image manipulation software like Photoshop or GIMP and push back the black rim of the circle replacing it with the respective shade of gray
Ahh tbh I like what I’m trying to go for it the type of lines the most fnf avatars have around them i know there’s like this blender way to do it but I heard it sucks so I’m just trying to find a matcap that can do that effect
in blender you could set it up to use backface culling to your advantage and make an outline out of it, but doing so also doubles the poly count. This is because you make that effect by literally copying all of the polygons, scaling what you copied up a bit (the amount determines the size of the outline) and then reverse the direction they are facing
this works cause polygons technically have a "forward" facing side. Its why if you stick your head into someone you can see through them, you are looking through the back side of their polygons
and since game engines need to render what is on screen many many times a second, they have to cut any corner they can, so if you are never going to really see the backside of a polygon, why waste time rendering it? Hence Unity and all game engines do not render the backside of polygons, or better known as "Backface Culling"
Ahh I could try to do that but the kinda problem to that is k don’t really know where that is exactly haha. I’m kinda inexperienced but not really to put it in into terms i kinda figured out matcaps today and just wondering around to see if there was a huge shortcut to outlines around avatars using a certain matcap so I wouldn’t have to touch blender because I don’t really know how to work blender well

if they aren't there at all, you probably went over the limit of either one or both of the physbone component limit or the physbone transform limit which will disable the physbones on quest

You can still upload, it will just disable all of the physbones components
No, you cannot use alpha transparency on quest, at least for avatars
Unlike desktop GPUs, the quest doesn’t have the hardware to specify handle transparency which makes it very, very expensive on quest

It’s most likely using vertex colors, a lot of the quest shaders like to do that. It is really useful, but if ya don’t know it’s there or what it’s doing it can be annoying and confusing

so i'm tryna make two 2d avatars but i can't figure out how to make them double-sided or transparent, how do i make them transparent and double-sided?
You cant set anything transparent you would have to delete some of the tris for that
the double sided would just copy paste the first side
you could also use blender to achive a better rating for the avatar since just copy pasting the same block would drop it

Like I'm doing everything the exact same, it just won't export with the added mats anymore for no reason
Are you applying the solidify to the model?
looks like this model has vertex paint. i think you'd need to remove that in blender

I did it, I duplicated the model then put the shader on then deleted the shapekeys from the outline

i've had this problem for three days straight, and no matter how many polygons there are there's never android support for it and the sdk never tells me why
i've had it at 20.000, 15,000 and 10.000

There is mobile support, just not as a fallback. Fallbacks require everything to be lowered, not just polygon count.

i didn't have it at exactly 10.00, i had it around 9.600 something
