hey people, i'm looking to 3D print a metal piece in very high detail, that looks more like it's casted and expensive rather than obviously 3D printed. if one wants to spend extra, what's the best option for this?

compact cobalt
#

an SLA printer will do you well for figurines, but you wont get something that looked casted without a lot of post processing

junior hamlet
#

what's the best online printing service for metals?

compact cobalt
#

i think shapeways will print metal

#

will still have a "powdery" appearance though

#

they have an option to print a mould and cast something for you though

#

it's just very expensive

junior hamlet
#

i was wondering about shapeways, but the examples in metals i've seen 3d printed online haven't been as impressive as i hoped

#

but they can actually cast it?

compact cobalt
#

any "printed" metals will look rough since it uses a metal powder and compression or something along those lines

#

but yeah they'll print a wax mould and then cast it properly if you pay them enough

#

i'll throw a printable stl up and get a quote for a 10 inch model real quick if you want prices

junior hamlet
#

i see rhodium plated brass looks nice

#

or silver

#

if they can make it look mostly smooth i'd love to do this

#

it's for a prize so it can cost a bit extra

compact cobalt
#

looks like for the most part all their metal stuff requires a size of <100mm

#

which would be anywhere from $250-700

#

25k if you want it in platinum ๐Ÿ˜…

junior hamlet
#

oh really? that's to have it cast? i uploaded just part of my model, i don't have it put together fully atm, and to have it polished steel is pretty cheap

#

but it didn't require it that big

compact cobalt
#

yeah a polished steel piece would probably do fine, and yeah that's the "worst case" for my model (100mm Z height exactly)

Hi there im new to vr so please forgive my ignorance. What are 3d prints? Are they those custom avatars ive seen people make?

gusty ferry
#

not at all ^ ^ they're actual 3d printed stuff

#

as in, with an actual 3d printer

#

cuz some people like to 3d print their avatars

#

like this from way earlier

And to perhaps get this channel going a bit again, I just finished printing a set of charging stations for all my equipment, doubles as a good spot to put things that isn't just the floor.

I need help with my printer. This will be the first time I have tried to reprogram it for dual head extusion. One head for pla/abs the other for support material. I am trying to compile marlin but cant get it to verify. I know it has something to do with the board I am going to use but not sure what I should do to get it to compile and work. The board I am using: https://www.hic3dprinter.com/collections/3d-printers-parts/products/hictop-3d-printer-control-board-mpx-3-reprap-arduino-compatible-mother-board

rough sinew
#

@weary mesa it's complaining there is a missing header

#

ie: avr/io.h

#

verify that it is indeed present

#

if not, investigate the download, and if worst comes to worst, contact the library suppliers/developers

weary mesa
#

@rough sinew Thank you for your response, but I'm not sure that's it. AVR is a micro processor. ie atmel or micron. I am using a Atmel Arduino based processor. I just need to make sure the marlin firmware is configured correctly.

delicate jetty
#

Might be some incompatibility or bug for such configuration (or sth else messed up) as avr libraries are linked properly in arduino ide. And yes I've compiled marlin for ramps and ultimaker boards before so should be doable

rough sinew
#

@weary mesa ...Arduinos use Atmel processors. Arduino is not an Atmel brand. This means it is an AVR, and the header is actually relevant.

#

And Micron doesn't make AVRs; it is owned wholly by Atmel.

#

And: what you have on your micro is indeed a microprocessor.

#

Or, if you wanna be pedantic, AVR is an instruction set architecture.

zenith willow
#

omg. i haven't checked this server in ages

#

and there's a dedicated 3D printing channel.

#

I'm... going to be in this server a lot more ๐Ÿ˜„

#

I guess for a smol intro. I mostly like to do functional prints. Especially if something in my janky rental house is broken and I want to fix it.

Here's like >20 of my prints, most of which are my design.

#

current printer woes I'm having are sudden underextrusion with every roll I have 1-2hr into a print. Even my most reliable rolls are having this issue, and I tried cleaning and replacing the nozzle. I noticed that my extruder stepper is getting really hot, and when I converted to bowden, I had to increase the current to get it to push filament through. I think it may be overheating or is just worn out. It's also only 1.33A. After exhausting some other options, I'm ordering a much fatter stepper motor to see if that'll push plastic without issue. Plus- I have a volcano block and haven't been able to take full advantage of it yet since I can't push plastic fast enough, hopefully this will let me!

#

I really need to finish building my custom linear rail hypercube evolution.

zenith willow
#

@abstract badger i've been looking for a large-format printer. Is this Anycubic's fault, or the vendor, or the shipper?

#

also, ive been having shit quality prints for the past few days. octopi said for the first time its been suffering unexpected timeouts. Just did a wholesale cold reboot of the printer, printer's control board, and the pi, and now its printing as good as it's recent best.

abstract badger
#

I am not sure yet as to whose fault it is, the shipper says it's not their fault, and I'm still in the procces of opening a support ticket with anycubic

#

The packing used by the vendor was an absolute disaster, just shredded paper and some of those bags filled with air which were all popped

abstract badger
#

good news, i managed to play cave story's main theme on it

zenith willow
#

that's useful ๐Ÿ˜›

#

it seems like you bought it pre-assembled though?

#

I wonder if it comes in kit form, I honestly would trust myself more to put it together better, and tightly packed separated components definitely stay protected better in shipping. also prob wayyy cheaper

compact cobalt
#

i had to put together one of those very very very early i3 knock-off kits some time ago and i vowed never to buy kits again lol

#

probably better since my experience but there were all kinds of parts missing, ill-cut panels etc

zenith willow
#

thats my printer rn ๐Ÿ˜› but I love putting shit together.

#

the only really meh part was peeling the protective cover off the plastic panels, it was paper instead of plastic and really hard to take off

#

Then again, I already have my own working printer, so I'm probably better off getting some open-source printer plans and building a new one from hand-selected parts and generic hardware.

compact cobalt
#

i got mine from monoprice this time around, just had to screw together the z axis and stuff and it was ready to level/print

zenith willow
#

especially since my current printer, I've had to either replace or heavily modify at least half of the stock components anyway.

#

so why buy shit parts from a kit to replace them later instead of get quality parts on first build

compact cobalt
#

yep lol

#

ive been really tempted to get an SLA printer

#

going to probably wait til i have a garage for that though, i hear they smell absolutely horrid with the resin

zenith willow
#

SLA seems both a lot more expensive and a lot more messy tho. I still haven't mastered FDM. my goal for my next printer is large format, since building cosplay armor pieces is really slowed down by needing to design and print multiple parts and take care of the extra steps needed to finish the parts with a smooth seam.

#

I assume just talking about 3D printed related stuff?

compact cobalt
#

SLA is basically necessary for minis unfortunately :(

zenith willow
#

I have no idea.

compact cobalt
#

it is in the other category ยฏ_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ

zenith willow
#

my guess is 3D printing derailed other channels so much, this is the quarantine zone for it

abstract badger
#

Oh no, it comes in parts, that pic is after fixing most of tha damage and bending the bits back into place, it comes in 2 main parts, the base, and the z axis that connect with some metal parts in for of a T on both sides

#

Or well it was supposed to come in 2 parts, but ended up being a little more than anticipated

zenith willow
#

ahhh. Hmm, I was hoping for it to be like, really deconstructed into like 50 or whatever pieces (not including fasteners)

main elm
#

Anyone have recommendations on what materials are best to paint 3d printed objects? Like the type of paint etc. Thanks ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

thorny flare
#

@main elm depends on the result you want and the base material you used. for general use acrylic paints work fine.

#

if you want to go nuts... sanding + bondo + spray acrylic for gloss and then just about any paint on top of that

#

ABS is solvent senstive... PETG and Nylon are better off using dyes and color markers.

#

almost nothing sticks well to Nylon. Nylon = copolymer

#

if you do not sand / post work... you will likely want to use a paint that is fairly thick as thin paints tend to wick along the layer lines and make it hard to get good detail.

velvet sandal
#

If you're going to use acrylic paints on any type of plastic, it's advised to prime the plastic first to stop the paint from sliding off, or just not sticking in general. Wargaming spray primers work well with most printer filaments. Like Games Workshop's Spray Prime, or Army Painter Spray primer. Source is 10+ years of painting tiny plastic and metal soldiers.

#

@main elm

normal sphinx
#

^ Strongly agree

thorny flare
#

PLA is fairly matte / not slick... if you want to paint all surfaces a primer is good... but if it is only details like edges, eyes, accents. than it's just a lot of extra work.

#

i guess it also depends on how much abuse the object is expected to take also.

#

Why I like 3d printers sometimes

onyx stone
#

Yeah I am doing tha same when my trackers come

#

I was wonderimg how long homemade straps last

#

But I guess I can just use 100% infill

compact cobalt
#

i used those same mounts but the ones modified to have shoelace holes for foot trackers w/ like 30% infill and they worked great

#

switched over to a different solution rather than them breaking, which was like 4 or 5 months

tiny burrow
#

I think the default ones w/ smaller holes would never break.... I'm printing solid w/ 5 shells I think now.... on my new ones... strongest yet.... the one that broke was either .15% infill w/ 3 shells or 3 shells solid..... but it lasted like 12 months+ .... and really it depends how you mount and how far you tighten them.

#

my feet I just sewed elastic onto I don't think they will ever break.... I just have a tendency to overtighten belt I think (its a friction clasp not a hole clasp)

#

I suppose I should also mention I print in ABS..... if you had the setup you could probably do soemthing like PC or just modify file slightly and make it a lot stronger

How easy is it to get hooked up to a 3D printer and print a file off thingiverse?

#

Thereโ€™s a nice one sitting in my garage but Iโ€™ve never used it lmao

hazy steeple
#

well it simple really

#

its the same for most printers @crystal plume

#

either you can plug in a usb and use that company's sofware. or you can use other better software like cura ultimaker. just make sure you have the correct usb and you know what printer you have

#

in fact some printers can actually print from micro sd cards

#

if your printer supports it. all you need to do is download cura software, and select your exact printer

#

once done plug in the micro sd card if you can and once it slices the model for printing you can save it to your sd card

#

and then you can print from sd card

#

if you wanna print via usb you just connect the usb to your computer and this will show up

#

if you need any help i can help you out a little more! just ping or dm me it dosent matter. @crystal plume

#

and just download files off thingivers as well. you can also convert models using blender so if you make custom avatars for vrc you can do so by converting to obj wavefront or stl

Just use desolvable support 4head

#

Jk that stuff is very pricy and you need 2 extruders

#

If there were a system which allowed VRC users, who were not 3D Printer owner/operators, to grab a virtual item in your world and send it out to a local mfg network of their choosing... what types of objects would you offer in-world? Would you strive for things that would be suitable for r/functionalprint? Would it be things you'd likely see at the impulse-buy section of gamestop? Would it be a print-ready version of an avatar to compliment selections of your avatar world? Would it be an extension of your etsy store? Would it be homegoods and other stuff that hits BedBath&Beyond's bottom line?
What type of 3DP tech in VRC do you want to see in the roaring 20s?

thorny flare
#

@winged blade there are 3D print services like shapeways... not cheap but you can get it in what ever materials you want. or in a few processes that have colored surfaces.

winged blade
#

@thorny flare Hmm? I'm familiar with shapeways, iMaterialize, what 3Dhubs is/used to be as well as MakeXYZ. In ref to my comments above, since 2015 I've been angling for an export function in VRC that takes advantage of those outlets. 3DHubs specifically because back then it was far more decentralized than it is today and the possibility of having your item printed in recycled material was a thing.

#

3DHubs has since gone full Darth Vader just like MakerBot did

thorny flare
#

yeah i used to have a hub.... it was never possible to run jobs for as cheap as shapeways...

winged blade
#

The aspect of "local" is the key there though. IMO it is the best way to leverage the tech in a meaningful way. I turned away a bunch of work through Hubs and helped the customer find someone local to them. I'm a zealot though.

#

When I was in the role of "mayor" of my region on Hubs, I took offense to the Hubs on the other side of the country making profiles lying about being in my area. It's all moot now though. Hubs is now just another shapeways.

#

Just another nail in the coffin of the maker movement.

onyx stone
#

subdivide your meshes

tiny plume
#

Shes from back when there was a 20K poly limit so no I'm not going to make her look abnormally smoothed just for printing

#

She is exactly how she appears in VRC although the camera makes the tris that make up her face show more than they actually do

#

Little bit of sanding and then touch up paint will fix that

#

And word from the wise don't immediately tell someone to change something on a project they have been working on, especially if they haven't asked for criticism. Its extremely rude and makes people not like you.

gaunt stag
#

๐Ÿค”

solid wraith
#

.

onyx stone
#

@tiny plume actually no, because 3D rendering can do "smooth shading" which smooths transitions between polygons. That doesnt exist in real life therefor you get very visible blocky geometry. For a 3D print it only makes sense to do physical smooth shading.

#

example, you can see individual polygons on the hair which wouldnt have been visible in game

abstract badger
#

not using flat shading irl ๐Ÿ˜”

tiny plume
#

Subdivision wouldn't give her the flat lighting look she would just look strange compared to what she actually looks like

#

The only way to get "flat lit" is in videogames

tiny plume
#

Personally I think she looks great for how much more I need to do

#

As I said before your unsolicited criticism is unwelcome so please take it elsewhere

onyx stone
#

thats not what we are talking about

#

we are talking about normal orientation and how normals work compared to how the real life works

tiny plume
#

Normals only have 2 orientations and if one or more would have been wrong the model wouldn't slice correctly due to the slicer software relying on that information. Also you were complaining about me not upping her poly count and the edges of all the faces being visible and not normals

#

Please if you are going to complain at least try to know what you are talking about

#

You obviously don't like that her polys show on the final print and I obviously don't care about your opinion so why do you keep pushing this argument?

onyx stone
#

okay Let me explain what i am talking about

#

the 3D print would look like this though because thats not something that happens in real life.

#

in real life the geometry is just like it is

#

Id like to think I know what I am talking about

#

while using subdivision would make the model look way more smooth and closer to the original normals.

#

does this explain what i was trying to tell you?

#

Normals dont just indicate which side of the face is rendered, it also indicates how its rendered and how lighting reacts with it

tiny plume
#

Oh I see what you think you are talking about. Blender can form a simple normal map to help smooth edges on a model but that is part of the shader system and not part of the data for the mesh. Face normals and normal maps are two entirely different things. Slicer software has nothing to do with shaders or normal maps and can only see the mesh itself. And whatever metadata is imbedded in it such as face normals

#

If I were to just apply a smoothing effect to the mesh it would make her look like she is made of clay and would be disturbing to look at

#

The effect you are asking about would be best achieved by splitting the mesh apart and slowly subdividing each section and some would have to be done by hand due to how blender's subdivide modifier works

#

And then the final effect would be a winter miko that looks wrong

#

Reason being mmd models don't look correct with actual lighting and require flat lighting or at most specialized shaders for the higher quality models and the miko base definitely isn't one of those

#

Also you are missing the very important point that I'm not going to spend days rebuilding her mesh and then weeks reprinting her just to please some random on the internet that thinks thier opinion is worth something

tiny plume
#

TLDR: 3d printers don't use shaders, edge smoothing makes her look diseased and doesn't translate to slicer software well, I'm not gonna spend days hand subdividing a model just to make her look smooth (wouldn't look right anyway due to me wanting to print her as she is), and finally and most importantly you have mistaken me for someone who cares about your criticism. If you don't like how I have printed a 3 year old vrc avatar then don't look at the pic

onyx stone
#

I know real life doesnt use shaders lol, thats why I suggested subdividing. Unless the topology isnt actual garbage consisting of a shit ton of Ngons you can just subdivide the mesh and bevel edges by angle to get sharp edges where they are needed and smooth ones we there should be smooth. Afterwards you will maybe have some areas that need manual adjusting but that would take at worse a few minutes. I dont see why youre getting so angry at me suggesting this technique.
You clearly care alot considering you have replied to me each time. I am not being rude about it in any way so I dont see why youre being so aggressive about it.
Case and point. I know Slicers and real life dont take normal and shading data in to account, thats the whole reason why I suggested subdividing you mesh, because thats what shading data is for, to give an illusion of a smoother surface which in real life can be only achieved by, well, being smoother.
And lastly. I am sorry if expressing my opinion that blocky prints look bad upset you but, I am allowed to express it even if you dont ask for it.

abstract badger
#

damn, this went of for much longer than expected

tiny plume
#

Yea it did lol and I still need to take some more pics of her cause I never got around to it

going by wiki references as to her height of 125cm she comes out at 41.6cm or a bit under 16.4 inches.

Did a first test print at 1/8 scale to see if the parts fit together and while impossible for me to actually string properly due to having the too big elastic she would have come out at about just over six inches at this scale if i finished this test up:

@mint escarp
There are a few qualifying questions to picking a printer. What do you plan on printing? Bolstering an existing hobby? Printing anround the thingiverse to see what peeks interest? This will tell if you should be concerned with build area dimensions or stock material considerations like temp range or heated build plate. You'll likely end up choosing something from Creality, as the market you described has started to stabilize around their product line it seems. I know a few happy owners of CR and Ender models. If you are into putting it together yourself and want to get out what you put into it, then a kit can stretch the budget and get more features. I think Folgertech is still not back up and running but they had the lowest part prices.

# upper scaffold my Left Controller is on Repair, so i need to build a new one ^^

If you want to get really crafty, you could make some sort of mount to attach that tracker to a Wii Nunchuck and then bind the VR controller buttons to that nunchuck via SteamVR's input config thing.
Did that part way some time ago when I was investigating using a nunchuck in place of a Vive Wand's trackpad. Was amazing, short of the issues with using the wand and nunchuck in the same hand at the same time.

upper scaffold
#

the Vive tracker doesnt have the right GPIO pins for this ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

crystal vortex
#

Doesn't need to. Connect a Wiimote and Nunchuck to the PC via bluetooth, run software on the PC side to make games and stuff think the wiimote is a xbox controller, it'll now show up in SteamVR as a gamepad, then set up that controllers bindings to the Wand/Knuckle controller bindings.

upper scaffold
#

oh thats a Idea, so i need a Wiimote ^^

crystal vortex
#

Gets a little annoying having to have the wire between the wiimote and nunchuck, but yeah.
This only really makes sense if you happen to have a wiimote and nunchuck already on hand. Doing this would work with basically any controller you like you can hook up to a PC. I just suggest a nunchuck because it's already designed to be used in one hand comfortably.

upper scaffold
#

i have some ideas thanks ^^

crystal vortex
#

No problem. Wish the Vive trackers were cheaper, making doing these sorts of fun little basic controller projects more practical.

upper scaffold

Oh really? How would I do it?

winged blade

What's the state of your avatar and what tools do you usually use? It's worth noting that any well optimized-for-vr avatar project is also optimized to start this process. However you are more likely to use any higher detail mesh that one would use to bake normals into the lower poly model. The word of the day : "manifold"

upper scaffold

you could convert your model per Blender or Unity->Vroid in an STL file

#

and STL Files are printable

bronze fiber

Ah ok, to 3D print I use cura and I know very little 3D modeling

bronze fiber

winged blade

Initiating a 3d print of an avatar from in-app isn't a thing yet. Fingers crossed. But it does beg the question; if you were able to export the .stl in a given pose that you then print (which is great!) , does the creator benefit? Is the use of a poorly distributed service like shapeways a better route because there is a revenue stream that the creator can benefit from? Complicated issues imo.

@barren glacier protopasta was making a htpla that you print and then bake in an oven at a specific temp to aneal the part and the strength after is pretty impressive.

I 3d printed a couple plastic pieces to hold them on along with a couple bolts. All the info is there in the thingiverse link. :)

#

I bought the croks specifically because they have those holes I could use as anchoring points.

#

The mount holes back of the trackers are just standard 1/4 inch thread bolts you can buy at a hardware for a few cents.

Anyone have any tips or tutorials on how to prepare/fix a humanoid model for 3d printing? I tried an auto fixer program and it was just like NO.

#

I have some blender experience. I'm just not sure what a 3d printer requires, if that makes sense

#

Model is a vroid model, if anyone have tips specific to that

faint void
#

basically all your meshes need to be solid. Look for standalone faces in blender and extrude them until they have volume

#

vroid uses cutout a lot which is harder to deal with since the slicer doesn't care about texture

#

so maybe you may want to use the knife tool to manually cut stuff out before extruding

#

i often extrude single faces into the body to make it solid

#

iirc it basically does a boolean and

Soo this prescription lens adapter is working with Eye tracking with the Vive Pro Eye. I just need to clean up some verts and model errors. After I finish doing that I will upload this to my thingiverse account. You will need custom supports addon to print this and print it lens side down. I know I'm going to get some negative comments about my choice for print material (ABS), but I chose it for 2 reasons. I notice that when I have eye tracking on and the infrared LED's are on it gets hot inside the headset. I know it's not hot enough to melt pla, but I don't have alot of pla laying around. Also need to get rid of my old abs filament and dont like wasting mats. The lenses that fit in this are Round Glasses 550021 Black from zennioptical.com/p/metal-alloy-full-rim-frame-with-spring-hinges/5500?skuId=550021
Mine cost about $50usd but could have been 12usd cheaper if I didn't have a high index in my prescription. Would anyone be interested in me doing some prints for them?

the hair, clothing and tail would be the hard part.... the hair and the tail would need to be solidified somehow. the mesh skirt would be better printed seprately or added in another way (depending on scale).

winged blade
#

The FDM or resin route would require some airbrushing skillz. Separate pieces made manifold and digitally chopped into pieces for least amount of support material. Glued together and very one-off.
On the other hand, more digital prep work getting the mesh manifold and making sure the colors are mapped to .obj format properly could get you a good file for this polyjet process.

thorny flare

if... you have good assets... you can get shapeways to print them. but likely some, if not all, the assest are not manafold (all meshes are "air tight" )... if you have blender exp, you could fix those issues yourself. if not commishing someone to do that work would (and then shapeways) would be a likely path.

if you have a preliminary manafold model / mesh you can upload it and get an instant quote to you can determine if it's with in your budget / expectations.
