#3d-printing
1 messages ยท Page 3 of 1
hey people, i'm looking to 3D print a metal piece in very high detail, that looks more like it's casted and expensive rather than obviously 3D printed. if one wants to spend extra, what's the best option for this?
an SLA printer will do you well for figurines, but you wont get something that looked casted without a lot of post processing
what's the best online printing service for metals?
i think shapeways will print metal
will still have a "powdery" appearance though
they have an option to print a mould and cast something for you though
it's just very expensive
i was wondering about shapeways, but the examples in metals i've seen 3d printed online haven't been as impressive as i hoped
but they can actually cast it?
any "printed" metals will look rough since it uses a metal powder and compression or something along those lines
but yeah they'll print a wax mould and then cast it properly if you pay them enough
i'll throw a printable stl up and get a quote for a 10 inch model real quick if you want prices
i see rhodium plated brass looks nice
or silver
if they can make it look mostly smooth i'd love to do this
it's for a prize so it can cost a bit extra
looks like for the most part all their metal stuff requires a size of <100mm
which would be anywhere from $250-700
25k if you want it in platinum ๐
oh really? that's to have it cast? i uploaded just part of my model, i don't have it put together fully atm, and to have it polished steel is pretty cheap
but it didn't require it that big
yeah a polished steel piece would probably do fine, and yeah that's the "worst case" for my model (100mm Z height exactly)
Foda se
...okie...
Hi there im new to vr so please forgive my ignorance. What are 3d prints? Are they those custom avatars ive seen people make?
not at all ^ ^ they're actual 3d printed stuff
as in, with an actual 3d printer
cuz some people like to 3d print their avatars
like this from way earlier
And to perhaps get this channel going a bit again, I just finished printing a set of charging stations for all my equipment, doubles as a good spot to put things that isn't just the floor.
I need help with my printer. This will be the first time I have tried to reprogram it for dual head extusion. One head for pla/abs the other for support material. I am trying to compile marlin but cant get it to verify. I know it has something to do with the board I am going to use but not sure what I should do to get it to compile and work. The board I am using: https://www.hic3dprinter.com/collections/3d-printers-parts/products/hictop-3d-printer-control-board-mpx-3-reprap-arduino-compatible-mother-board
I have the board listed in configuration.h
@weary mesa it's complaining there is a missing header
ie: avr/io.h
verify that it is indeed present
if not, investigate the download, and if worst comes to worst, contact the library suppliers/developers
@rough sinew Thank you for your response, but I'm not sure that's it. AVR is a micro processor. ie atmel or micron. I am using a Atmel Arduino based processor. I just need to make sure the marlin firmware is configured correctly.
Might be some incompatibility or bug for such configuration (or sth else messed up) as avr libraries are linked properly in arduino ide. And yes I've compiled marlin for ramps and ultimaker boards before so should be doable
@weary mesa ...Arduinos use Atmel processors. Arduino is not an Atmel brand. This means it is an AVR, and the header is actually relevant.
And Micron doesn't make AVRs; it is owned wholly by Atmel.
And: what you have on your micro is indeed a microprocessor.
Or, if you wanna be pedantic, AVR is an instruction set architecture.
yes
hi @near crag !
hi
Finally fixed my MP Select Mini and got a successful print again. Bed wire was cut from friction.
i wish i had a printer
like i know how to operate one,
(my school has a couple pretty big ones)
but obviously i cant go ask the tech profs to use the 3d printer to print my entire minecraft mansion
Anyone got any interesting things to 3d print to make ones time with a Rift S better?
Here's a cool print for index owners
omg
oh, bad time to post that, thingiverse is down for maintenence ๐

omg. i haven't checked this server in ages
and there's a dedicated 3D printing channel.
I'm... going to be in this server a lot more ๐
I guess for a smol intro. I mostly like to do functional prints. Especially if something in my janky rental house is broken and I want to fix it.
Here's like >20 of my prints, most of which are my design.
current printer woes I'm having are sudden underextrusion with every roll I have 1-2hr into a print. Even my most reliable rolls are having this issue, and I tried cleaning and replacing the nozzle. I noticed that my extruder stepper is getting really hot, and when I converted to bowden, I had to increase the current to get it to push filament through. I think it may be overheating or is just worn out. It's also only 1.33A. After exhausting some other options, I'm ordering a much fatter stepper motor to see if that'll push plastic without issue. Plus- I have a volcano block and haven't been able to take full advantage of it yet since I can't push plastic fast enough, hopefully this will let me!
Nice stuff mate!
thanks!
My anycubic chiron arrived today, but oh no
You can guess in what shape the rest of the printer is ๐

time to pay extra 200 for return shipping
yee haw!
These are most of the yikers It suffered
Ouch
I really need to finish building my custom linear rail hypercube evolution.
@abstract badger i've been looking for a large-format printer. Is this Anycubic's fault, or the vendor, or the shipper?
also, ive been having shit quality prints for the past few days. octopi said for the first time its been suffering unexpected timeouts. Just did a wholesale cold reboot of the printer, printer's control board, and the pi, and now its printing as good as it's recent best.
I am not sure yet as to whose fault it is, the shipper says it's not their fault, and I'm still in the procces of opening a support ticket with anycubic
The packing used by the vendor was an absolute disaster, just shredded paper and some of those bags filled with air which were all popped
But despite how bad it was, still managed to put it all together, I'll keep you updated if it actually prints anything
good news, i managed to play cave story's main theme on it
that's useful ๐
it seems like you bought it pre-assembled though?
I wonder if it comes in kit form, I honestly would trust myself more to put it together better, and tightly packed separated components definitely stay protected better in shipping. also prob wayyy cheaper
i had to put together one of those very very very early i3 knock-off kits some time ago and i vowed never to buy kits again lol
probably better since my experience but there were all kinds of parts missing, ill-cut panels etc
thats my printer rn ๐ but I love putting shit together.
the only really meh part was peeling the protective cover off the plastic panels, it was paper instead of plastic and really hard to take off
Then again, I already have my own working printer, so I'm probably better off getting some open-source printer plans and building a new one from hand-selected parts and generic hardware.
i got mine from monoprice this time around, just had to screw together the z axis and stuff and it was ready to level/print
especially since my current printer, I've had to either replace or heavily modify at least half of the stock components anyway.
so why buy shit parts from a kit to replace them later instead of get quality parts on first build
yep lol
ive been really tempted to get an SLA printer
going to probably wait til i have a garage for that though, i hear they smell absolutely horrid with the resin
SLA seems both a lot more expensive and a lot more messy tho. I still haven't mastered FDM. my goal for my next printer is large format, since building cosplay armor pieces is really slowed down by needing to design and print multiple parts and take care of the extra steps needed to finish the parts with a smooth seam.
I assume just talking about 3D printed related stuff?
SLA is basically necessary for minis unfortunately :(
I have no idea.
it is in the other category ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
my guess is 3D printing derailed other channels so much, this is the quarantine zone for it
Oh no, it comes in parts, that pic is after fixing most of tha damage and bending the bits back into place, it comes in 2 main parts, the base, and the z axis that connect with some metal parts in for of a T on both sides
Or well it was supposed to come in 2 parts, but ended up being a little more than anticipated

ahhh. Hmm, I was hoping for it to be like, really deconstructed into like 50 or whatever pieces (not including fasteners)
i love how every other chinese 3D printer or filament is marketed using 3d prints of very-damn-copyrighted models/characters
not mine, thought I would share
That's just anime
correction, nekos

wow rude bot buzz
hehe
o-o??
Anyone have recommendations on what materials are best to paint 3d printed objects? Like the type of paint etc. Thanks ๐
@main elm depends on the result you want and the base material you used. for general use acrylic paints work fine.
if you want to go nuts... sanding + bondo + spray acrylic for gloss and then just about any paint on top of that
ABS is solvent senstive... PETG and Nylon are better off using dyes and color markers.
almost nothing sticks well to Nylon. Nylon = copolymer
if you do not sand / post work... you will likely want to use a paint that is fairly thick as thin paints tend to wick along the layer lines and make it hard to get good detail.
If you're going to use acrylic paints on any type of plastic, it's advised to prime the plastic first to stop the paint from sliding off, or just not sticking in general. Wargaming spray primers work well with most printer filaments. Like Games Workshop's Spray Prime, or Army Painter Spray primer. Source is 10+ years of painting tiny plastic and metal soldiers.
@main elm
^ Strongly agree
PLA is fairly matte / not slick... if you want to paint all surfaces a primer is good... but if it is only details like edges, eyes, accents. than it's just a lot of extra work.
i guess it also depends on how much abuse the object is expected to take also.
how often u guys replace ur nozzle or hotend
WuT
nozzle replace = hundreds of hours. Basicly anytime it has a major issue or cleaning i cycle though nozzles.
hot end... i have had to replace one heater in like 3k+ hours of run time.
I accidentally cut off the tip of my nozzle once. That was fun
@zinc heart vrchat is free and runs decently enough on desktop. grab it from steam
why cant you get steam?
if you really cant you can try getting it thru oculus
just skip the headset setup and go straight to the store
you should be able to download desktop from there

lol
My design for mounting vive trackers ๐
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3861524
(repost from neighbor thread)
This is my solution for mounting vive trackers on human body.
Wide belt was taken from here https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33039087281.html
(one piece used for hip belt and another one is cut in half for using on both legs)
or you can use ordinary flexible belt from a clothi...
Interesting design, thanks for sharing
This is a cool design for sure! Bravo!

So guys, what kind of 3D Printer do you recommend for a 3d printing n00b like me? I want to get started with it soon
There's some good looking-to-buy info pinned to the 3DP subreddit
https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/dboha9/purchase_advice_megathread_what_to_buy_who_to_buy/
Reading the latest about people printing avatars, got around to posing and printing my latest daily-driver robot avatar.

oh nice ^^ thank you
Wait, you guys are 3d printing your vrc avatars?
Thats sic.
Just got mine resin printed today
Epic!
You guys like my custom avatar?
Too spook
Ngl, i miss the old loading avatar

hello
impressive 3D print
it's nice even tho i don't like fortnite XD
Maybe they're asking if anyone can print them a lithophane of that image?
Yeah I am doing tha same when my trackers come
I was wonderimg how long homemade straps last
But I guess I can just use 100% infill
i used those same mounts but the ones modified to have shoelace holes for foot trackers w/ like 30% infill and they worked great
switched over to a different solution rather than them breaking, which was like 4 or 5 months
I think the default ones w/ smaller holes would never break.... I'm printing solid w/ 5 shells I think now.... on my new ones... strongest yet.... the one that broke was either .15% infill w/ 3 shells or 3 shells solid..... but it lasted like 12 months+ .... and really it depends how you mount and how far you tighten them.
my feet I just sewed elastic onto I don't think they will ever break.... I just have a tendency to overtighten belt I think (its a friction clasp not a hole clasp)
I suppose I should also mention I print in ABS..... if you had the setup you could probably do soemthing like PC or just modify file slightly and make it a lot stronger
for quest users... https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3937499
Another lithophane request? Why are backlit lithophane panels so popular again all of the sudden? Y'all should try running your 2d images through this customizer and meet us printers halfway. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:74322
Oh damn ima try that
I 3d printed my VRChat Avatar
๐
I plan to refine some parts in the model and the slicer settings. Then re print and paint it.
Touched up some settings & Re printed in white.
@sick nymph Awesome job. Now split the solid virtual model in half, add an empty space to house a small usb thumbdrive to store all the avatar files and resources inside of itself. ๐
cant you just store it on your computer
@tall stream if you lack any sense of imagination or whimsy, sure be boring
im sorry
Not to mention it makes a superficial print a functional print
@tall stream nah I'm sorry. But that comment felt trolly
@winged blade Thanks! Haha I like that idea. Very clever!
Golden toothpick from splatoon 2
How easy is it to get hooked up to a 3D printer and print a file off thingiverse?
Thereโs a nice one sitting in my garage but Iโve never used it lmao
well it simple really
its the same for most printers @crystal plume
either you can plug in a usb and use that company's sofware. or you can use other better software like cura ultimaker. just make sure you have the correct usb and you know what printer you have
in fact some printers can actually print from micro sd cards
Such as one like this
if your printer supports it. all you need to do is download cura software, and select your exact printer
once done plug in the micro sd card if you can and once it slices the model for printing you can save it to your sd card
and then you can print from sd card
if you wanna print via usb you just connect the usb to your computer and this will show up
if you need any help i can help you out a little more! just ping or dm me it dosent matter. @crystal plume
and just download files off thingivers as well. you can also convert models using blender so if you make custom avatars for vrc you can do so by converting to obj wavefront or stl
What are you guys and girls making your 3d models from?
@dusk vector are you asking which 3D printers we are using?
@unique path Great project
Bruh I'd love to 3d print my avatar
if you have the model in blender you can change the rest pose to w/e you want and export it as an stl and print it
though fair warning you are going to be spending quite a bit of time dealing w/ removing supports
Just use desolvable support 4head
Jk that stuff is very pricy and you need 2 extruders
You can play with the settings and get some easilly removable supports tho
If you make the model a bit bigger than normal
why are you asking that question in a 3D print channel?
alguem br?

If there were a system which allowed VRC users, who were not 3D Printer owner/operators, to grab a virtual item in your world and send it out to a local mfg network of their choosing... what types of objects would you offer in-world? Would you strive for things that would be suitable for r/functionalprint? Would it be things you'd likely see at the impulse-buy section of gamestop? Would it be a print-ready version of an avatar to compliment selections of your avatar world? Would it be an extension of your etsy store? Would it be homegoods and other stuff that hits BedBath&Beyond's bottom line?
What type of 3DP tech in VRC do you want to see in the roaring 20s?
You have a pretty cool wire-frame thing going on in your interior design there.
Got a bigger project going but it's on hold till after I get my Christmas presents printed but until then I'll show my little one off for now
My big project is printing her at full scale and all I have left is about 2/3 of her scarf and some pieces of her hair that had support failures. The little one is a little under a foot tall where as the full size Miko is 0.91 m tall
@winged blade there are 3D print services like shapeways... not cheap but you can get it in what ever materials you want. or in a few processes that have colored surfaces.
@thorny flare Hmm? I'm familiar with shapeways, iMaterialize, what 3Dhubs is/used to be as well as MakeXYZ. In ref to my comments above, since 2015 I've been angling for an export function in VRC that takes advantage of those outlets. 3DHubs specifically because back then it was far more decentralized than it is today and the possibility of having your item printed in recycled material was a thing.
3DHubs has since gone full Darth Vader just like MakerBot did
yeah i used to have a hub.... it was never possible to run jobs for as cheap as shapeways...
The aspect of "local" is the key there though. IMO it is the best way to leverage the tech in a meaningful way. I turned away a bunch of work through Hubs and helped the customer find someone local to them. I'm a zealot though.
When I was in the role of "mayor" of my region on Hubs, I took offense to the Hubs on the other side of the country making profiles lying about being in my area. It's all moot now though. Hubs is now just another shapeways.
Just another nail in the coffin of the maker movement.
Quest avatar. Bananas for scale.
No, just painted. ๐จ ๐๏ธ
@balmy plaza dual extruders are great. They arent thag much expensive and work anazingly well
@crimson shale Thats so cutie!!!
i like the dead banna
Yeah, a min after the picture on the right was taken, there was a betrayal.
Nice 3d print ^
yeah how much filament was that? Looks like a a lot
That looks really good!
not really 3d printing exactly, but somewhat similar

I'm going to print and fold a few of these and doodle a few expressions on the faces
3d printer is fixed and I printed my vrc avatar just gotta paint it
Also made a little doomguy for doom eternal's release in 8 days
Why are you asking for avatars in 3d printing
How hard is it to convert a mmd model for 3d printing? like if i wanted to print my avatar form vrchat
basically throw it into blender and export it.
Also it needs to be a solid mesh with no holes
if there are missing parts of a mesh in the slicing software use an app called mesh mixer. thats how i got my vrc avatar working
Speaking of which
Here is the finished product and I know the painting is scuffed but meh I'm happy
I didnt know there was a 3d printer chat oh boy gonna start posting my prints here too
damn I wish I could print but my printer is broken L
might as well post my print
@formal gust rather easy. I like to use Zbrush for converting models for printable tho. There is feature called Dynamesh and seals the model and welds everything.
My friends' avatar
i like
Mr grizz from splatoon 2
nice
Doomslayer
badass
It's not really 3d printing, but someone shared bender eyes they found for quest, so....

It's hard to get a Saitama character from anywhere else, and I'm trying to make it with Yusoft, but after searching, I don't see a character called Saitama.
i had some vive tracker charging docks 3d Printed , but i sent the guy the wrong files and it only fits the OG Vive Micro USB cable https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2540120 Does anyone want to buy a set of three for 45 bucks?
oh nice, yours has joints and stuff
cool
Very nice!
brb
@serene iron Thank you
it stands over 18 inches tall and each limb like the upper leg/lower arm piece took a day to print cause i have a small print bed
Ah
i cant really go any smaller without it actually taking longer cause it would need super high quality for the little pieces
I 3D printed a Mandalorian helmet! It took about 117 hours to print.
Hehe thanks!
That's so cool
So cool!
nice 3d print you got there antiweeb
@random drift do you have a place you display these. Like an ig or something
I love it so much
I love bjds
Buy a filament that glow in the dark by mistake and now im just using it, it really cool when you go sleep and you see your thing glow
now this is epic
@rough loom i do not, but would be nice, have any ideas? its over 18 inches tall
bruh im too 3rd world for even a standalone OCULUS GO.
i got this new rainbow filiment and when i print with it, it turns this nice gold color, strange, but i like it
@random drift make an instagram!!
ewww, pass
Me who's still trying to print all of the brushes
Printed zombie cup took 38 hours

I love this haha
dis looks like me when i may not go on de pc
Approved

Still waiting for the Index, super excited :)

Can you maybe not post this here?
Pansexual_Person(megs left boob) wow that is a very cool looking 3d print, how did you color it so well?
The Shrine! Basicly Wireless charging
that. is. sick.
looks very nice, please post this make on Thingiverse, there are not enough of them on that print
Printed this on my Ender 3 Pro, its working like a Charm without any Problems.

oh lol, you are the other make on it, that makes sense
So ive never own a 3D printer before, which resin printer is better for qquality?
Anycubic Printer or Egloo Mars Printer
very nice
Hello does anyone have any, or know an avatar world with, danganronpa avatars?
this is the wrong channel for that question, this channel is for 3D printing
not the right channel, though somebody already told you to go to #user-support-old by now
Resin printing I presume?
Yeah, UV resin with an Anycubic Photon 3d Printer
Those turned out nice. Are you going to paint them?
Sure, already painted several prints
Man I wish I had a resin printer, I have an FDM but I can't print small models that good
Yeah, but a resin printer is a pain to use, and the resin is somewhat dangerous, so you have to take several precautions.
i just started using a .1mm and god does it take long to print but let me tell you it is the best
I might go back to a 0.5 because im getting ready to do a mass print
also here are the nozzel sizes for everyday printers
0.06-1.5mm
0.06
But how about 3D Scanning? Has anyone been succesful scanning his or her face to use as an avatar in VrChat or a 3D print project? I am curious about the process
How do you make 3d printing
Well, now that that is over, I wanna see some 3D print fails. Here's one that happened earlier at work this year lol.
God dam
my eyes :c
oh....
Yeah, I took it apart and i just decided to get a new thermostat heater block and cartridge haha. All that only cost like $20

not about my statement i was making

So I've been working on printing my vrc avatar for a while and while she's not completely done I wanna show off my progress
And yes she is to scale
Printed her on a cr-10s and her head /shoulders alone took 13 days to print from start to finish and used an entire spool of filament
subdivide your meshes
Shes from back when there was a 20K poly limit so no I'm not going to make her look abnormally smoothed just for printing
She is exactly how she appears in VRC although the camera makes the tris that make up her face show more than they actually do
Little bit of sanding and then touch up paint will fix that
And word from the wise don't immediately tell someone to change something on a project they have been working on, especially if they haven't asked for criticism. Its extremely rude and makes people not like you.
dude, he just has to appply smooth shading on it irl, no need to subdivide
Can you bring more photos
When I get a chance Ill take more and If I forget Ill def be posting some when shes done
๐ค
.
@tiny plume actually no, because 3D rendering can do "smooth shading" which smooths transitions between polygons. That doesnt exist in real life therefor you get very visible blocky geometry. For a 3D print it only makes sense to do physical smooth shading.
example, you can see individual polygons on the hair which wouldnt have been visible in game
not using flat shading irl ๐
Subdivision wouldn't give her the flat lighting look she would just look strange compared to what she actually looks like
The only way to get "flat lit" is in videogames
Personally I think she looks great for how much more I need to do
As I said before your unsolicited criticism is unwelcome so please take it elsewhere
thats not what we are talking about
we are talking about normal orientation and how normals work compared to how the real life works
Normals only have 2 orientations and if one or more would have been wrong the model wouldn't slice correctly due to the slicer software relying on that information. Also you were complaining about me not upping her poly count and the edges of all the faces being visible and not normals
Please if you are going to complain at least try to know what you are talking about
You obviously don't like that her polys show on the final print and I obviously don't care about your opinion so why do you keep pushing this argument?
okay Let me explain what i am talking about
lets say this is out geometry
it looks like this in game, because rendering engines can smooth normals
the 3D print would look like this though because thats not something that happens in real life.
in real life the geometry is just like it is
Id like to think I know what I am talking about
while using subdivision would make the model look way more smooth and closer to the original normals.
does this explain what i was trying to tell you?
Normals dont just indicate which side of the face is rendered, it also indicates how its rendered and how lighting reacts with it
Oh I see what you think you are talking about. Blender can form a simple normal map to help smooth edges on a model but that is part of the shader system and not part of the data for the mesh. Face normals and normal maps are two entirely different things. Slicer software has nothing to do with shaders or normal maps and can only see the mesh itself. And whatever metadata is imbedded in it such as face normals
If I were to just apply a smoothing effect to the mesh it would make her look like she is made of clay and would be disturbing to look at
The effect you are asking about would be best achieved by splitting the mesh apart and slowly subdividing each section and some would have to be done by hand due to how blender's subdivide modifier works
And then the final effect would be a winter miko that looks wrong
Reason being mmd models don't look correct with actual lighting and require flat lighting or at most specialized shaders for the higher quality models and the miko base definitely isn't one of those
Also you are missing the very important point that I'm not going to spend days rebuilding her mesh and then weeks reprinting her just to please some random on the internet that thinks thier opinion is worth something
TLDR: 3d printers don't use shaders, edge smoothing makes her look diseased and doesn't translate to slicer software well, I'm not gonna spend days hand subdividing a model just to make her look smooth (wouldn't look right anyway due to me wanting to print her as she is), and finally and most importantly you have mistaken me for someone who cares about your criticism. If you don't like how I have printed a 3 year old vrc avatar then don't look at the pic
I know real life doesnt use shaders lol, thats why I suggested subdividing. Unless the topology isnt actual garbage consisting of a shit ton of Ngons you can just subdivide the mesh and bevel edges by angle to get sharp edges where they are needed and smooth ones we there should be smooth. Afterwards you will maybe have some areas that need manual adjusting but that would take at worse a few minutes. I dont see why youre getting so angry at me suggesting this technique.
You clearly care alot considering you have replied to me each time. I am not being rude about it in any way so I dont see why youre being so aggressive about it.
Case and point. I know Slicers and real life dont take normal and shading data in to account, thats the whole reason why I suggested subdividing you mesh, because thats what shading data is for, to give an illusion of a smoother surface which in real life can be only achieved by, well, being smoother.
And lastly. I am sorry if expressing my opinion that blocky prints look bad upset you but, I am allowed to express it even if you dont ask for it.
damn, this went of for much longer than expected
Yea it did lol and I still need to take some more pics of her cause I never got around to it
Been too busy trying to fix my resin printer and get my fdm printers set up to use pei sheets instead of glass cause I'm tired of having to buy glue sticks
I love that you made it to scale.
It would be insane to have irl versions of my OC's.
ohmygosh she looks amazing!!! so cool she's to scale!
I don't know anything about all that technical stuff, but I think that's a dope idea. Great work!!
@tiny plume any kind of update? :3
Are you trying to print a whole VRChat?
5 days to enjoy coffee, sounds good to me
For anybody in the channel that is into 3DP for the eco/ethics of it all, this post-industrial-use recycled PETG is supposedly as easy to print with as a good PLA.

I made the cage of the tracker's Bluetooth. I'm going to put it in after work today.
Well, that looks rather nice. I should do something like that. These things are just haphazardly all over the desk at the moment.
@halcyon bear Nice print, though I dont see the point of it
considering the stands for the dongles are there to spread the dongles apart to prevent interference, youre kind defeating the point of them. Theres no different between this and jus plugging the dongles directly to your pc
still a nice print though
I made a storage box for VR when I wasn't using it. I take it out and use it when I actually use it. The room was so crowded that I couldn't find it a few times.
wait i dont have to plug them into pc?
the best way that works for me is hanging from the ceiling all on one 4 port usb hub. those right angle bases are kind of useless.
Im not sure, but as far as I know youre suppost to place them as far apart as possible.

Maybe yours was on that shipping container megaship what had the fiasco? ๐ข I wonder how many printers and kits were actually on that thing....
This is sort of related: Im working on ball jointed doll referenced on the thicc variant of the Kanna avatar by reshaping/resculpting the Polaris doll on thingiverse ๐
The head and upper chest arent printable yet but here she is next to an adult proportioned doll, ive started printing her at 1/3 scale which is one of the common scales for ball jointed dolls:
going by wiki references as to her height of 125cm she comes out at 41.6cm or a bit under 16.4 inches.
Did a first test print at 1/8 scale to see if the parts fit together and while impossible for me to actually string properly due to having the too big elastic she would have come out at about just over six inches at this scale if i finished this test up:
that looks awesome~ ๐ keep up the great work. i would love to see some more updates on this. i'm quite unfamiliar with 3D printing but this really peeks my interest.
Got all of her parts printed out and test fit together, here she is with the unmodified full size one i printed off earlier .https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/361304425803022346/787659258296008704/unknown.png
nice progress so far, what do you use for joints/hinges?
i think you can just print joints
yes there are printable joints
HI
@balmy plaza is that a 3d printing game there?
If we don't keep the 3dprinting chatter up in this channel, apparently the rest of the discord sees us as an empty closet to just toss random stuff into.

What kind of 3d printer you got that needs steam to log into it?

Hey guys
I don't think there's anything more satisfying than troubleshooting a printer and finally fixing it
Stupid grounding issues was screwing up my auto bed leveler. Was driving me insane.
anybody have any experience with filament dryers? seeing some humidity effects printing in the lower level of my house, and weighing whether to get an inline filament dryer, offline drying box, or both.
How would I go about making it to where i can 3d print my avatar?
one of the big things is making sure your model is solid, aka its not a plane but a complex 3d object with no holes
uygugugugug
^ another esoteric print request? Maybe a keychain? At 100% infill, ABS, color swap, .16mm layer height, 64mm/sec avg tool-head speed.... the shipping would be wasteful and more than the print cost. Best source a local printer to take full advantage of the benefits to decentralized additive manufacturing on demand.
@balmy plaza meshlab and netfabb are (at least used to be) free easy stand alone tools to make a model manifold or quickly fix mesh issues. Usually adds a fair bit of messy polygons by VR standards.
@balmy plaza pls don't image spam. Are looking for help making a printed lithophane of that image?
Ok. I deleted the 4 other identical image posts you sent accidentally then. No worries.

Hey, anyone here have an Ender 3 Pro?
Yes
I have an ender 3, pretty close
My printer doesnt seem to want to print beyond the first layer, any clue how to fix it?
recalibrate bed height?
possible that the nozzle is hitting the bed and not being able to extrude anything
What exactly is happening?
thinking on buying a newbie 3d printer not a cheap one but not a printer i need a loan for
wow every room is silent to questions tonight
@mint escarp
There are a few qualifying questions to picking a printer. What do you plan on printing? Bolstering an existing hobby? Printing anround the thingiverse to see what peeks interest? This will tell if you should be concerned with build area dimensions or stock material considerations like temp range or heated build plate. You'll likely end up choosing something from Creality, as the market you described has started to stabilize around their product line it seems. I know a few happy owners of CR and Ender models. If you are into putting it together yourself and want to get out what you put into it, then a kit can stretch the budget and get more features. I think Folgertech is still not back up and running but they had the lowest part prices.
I have an ender 3 and love it. If you do get it get octoprint. Some people say it's useless but I love monitoring it from my computer or from my phone when I'm away from it.
Speaking of which, this finished printing today and painted it too
Post yer beverage based prints!
I have a bcn3d machine and am having trouble with my prints. I have the bed and extruder set to what the filament is recommend for and have it sliced correctly on my bcn3d slicer. Anyone know how to make your printer have higher quality prints that don't fail?
Temp, speed and 1st layer squish. You might need to experiment with those variables more. I prefer higher than recommended temps, jacked up toolhead speed and a 1st layer that is so squished it's darn near translucent.
should I also turn up my bed temp? I'll run some tests tonight

An older Avatar Wall pic, some stuff added since. Robots n' stuff going back to 2016 using SketchUp, Oculus Medium, Maya LT, Google Blocks and SculptrVR. Another robot made in MasterpieceVR is getting posed, prepped and segmented for printing atm.
are you using ender 3?
Cosplay, airsoft, paintball or NERF? Is there a version of it somewhere in VRChat attached to an avatar? Does the avatar also have poor trigger discipline?
i remember in a penthouse i visited last week there lie a gun like this, i thought about to print it to XD
I'm quite sure it's an R-99 from Titanfall/Apex Legends
my Left Controller is on Repair, so i need to build a new one ^^
and it Works!, so all what i have todo now ist to rekonfigure my right controller to do the movement in VRC ^^
(Works also Great in BeatSaber o.O)
That's very neat
more comming soon its a part of a bigger idea with complexe problems and solutions for VR Problems
Who else has an Ender 3
Actually a good idea XD
I use them every time I'm in VR chat lol. very little to improve imo
is a ender 3 good?
Very, really good for@someone with very little 3D printing experience
ok, I heard it is only good when you set it up correctly or something
Artillery Sidewinder X1, or Genius are good... the Ender are more for beginners who like to upgrade and like to handcraft a lot
the Artillerys are more: 8Screwsd 12plugs and Start... you need round about 10minutes to rebuild it from the package and run your first print, its a higher class of beginners but the price is payed that you dont need to care about something
cool af

If you want to get really crafty, you could make some sort of mount to attach that tracker to a Wii Nunchuck and then bind the VR controller buttons to that nunchuck via SteamVR's input config thing.
Did that part way some time ago when I was investigating using a nunchuck in place of a Vive Wand's trackpad. Was amazing, short of the issues with using the wand and nunchuck in the same hand at the same time.
the Vive tracker doesnt have the right GPIO pins for this ๐ฆ
Doesn't need to. Connect a Wiimote and Nunchuck to the PC via bluetooth, run software on the PC side to make games and stuff think the wiimote is a xbox controller, it'll now show up in SteamVR as a gamepad, then set up that controllers bindings to the Wand/Knuckle controller bindings.
oh thats a Idea, so i need a Wiimote ^^
Gets a little annoying having to have the wire between the wiimote and nunchuck, but yeah.
This only really makes sense if you happen to have a wiimote and nunchuck already on hand. Doing this would work with basically any controller you like you can hook up to a PC. I just suggest a nunchuck because it's already designed to be used in one hand comfortably.
i have some ideas thanks ^^
No problem. Wish the Vive trackers were cheaper, making doing these sorts of fun little basic controller projects more practical.
thats the way i think, i try to build much usable things for this as i could imagine
i hope if the Trackers in some times are more comfortable they would be more commercial, that the VR Dev's try to inuild more for them in the games
ok

Boop.
the future is now kid
this is pretty sick ngl
Gonna maybe share the files soon.
The hip tracker standoff is like...WAY better for tracking accuracy.
Annoyingly so.
Cant wait
but there is more wobble...
The belt I'm using is a gun belt, with a paddle holster clip. It's so stiff that it stands up on its own.
thats right but if youre jumping around it wobbles, physic work for everybody without exception, its called leverage and inertia
You'd be surprised how little the amount of wobble there is. I'd have to do jumping jacks to see any kind of change, and it's honestly negligible.
Since I'm using a very sturdy mounting system and a stiff belt, the effect is surprising.
๐ when it works is fine its ok ^^ , i use a also Stiff Belt 6cm High machinebelt from EngelbertStrauss but havent a long leverage, its more an direct mount ๐
TBH the secret is the mount; gun holster mounts are designed to hold a few pounds of weight with minimal wobble, I'm cheating and just using that.
Hey is there any way to 3D print your avatar
Yes there are Many ways ^^
Oh really? How would I do it?
What's the state of your avatar and what tools do you usually use? It's worth noting that any well optimized-for-vr avatar project is also optimized to start this process. However you are more likely to use any higher detail mesh that one would use to bake normals into the lower poly model. The word of the day : "manifold"
you could convert your model per Blender or Unity->Vroid in an STL file
and STL Files are printable
Ah ok, to 3D print I use cura and I know very little 3D modeling
How do I find the avatar file?
If you didn't upload the avatar yourself then you don't have the resources needed to print it.
Yeah i never made the avatar but I have it in my favorites
Initiating a 3d print of an avatar from in-app isn't a thing yet. Fingers crossed. But it does beg the question; if you were able to export the .stl in a given pose that you then print (which is great!) , does the creator benefit? Is the use of a poorly distributed service like shapeways a better route because there is a revenue stream that the creator can benefit from? Complicated issues imo.
Yeah
if you could get an FBX or VRM file you could do a pose at Your own with Blender/Unity or Vroid
Vroid have an Extra Posing an Print Editor thats very easy to use
game ready models don't look that good 3d printed because the 3d prints don't get the benefits of shading
Unless if you print it in colors. You can use a machine like that for the shading
i wonder if i could murder an orphan with that belt.
( /j btw )
Hey! I know you
Oh do you
Yes, Im Bandit Boyo
Tis true then
not a 3D print yet but do you think it would be possible to print this out of an Ender 3?
With some supports it looks like it should be fine. At a certain scale threshold you may have very thin parts that might not slice or print well. All given that the model is correctly manifold and internal intersecting geometry isn't throwing your slicer a curveball.
It is all in different segments just incase it couldnโt 3D print it full scale to fit on a head
is it in peices?
yeah ive got the frame in 2 separate parts, the screens are separate and the fins too, i feel like i should try and split the head plate into 3 or 6 pieces
just woke up after i started a 10hr print just to find out i forgot to secure my resin vat. It was just living up my vat for 10 hours ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
Oof
that is the best shit i have seen in years
design has changed slightly (mostly due to pla losing its strength over time) but it still works very well!
likely would not be an issue with PETG
i just dont print that much with it because of the fumes
@barren glacier protopasta was making a htpla that you print and then bake in an oven at a specific temp to aneal the part and the strength after is pretty impressive.
I 3d printed a couple plastic pieces to hold them on along with a couple bolts. All the info is there in the thingiverse link. :)
I bought the croks specifically because they have those holes I could use as anchoring points.
The mount holes back of the trackers are just standard 1/4 inch thread bolts you can buy at a hardware for a few cents.
also added $9 power banks, with hair ties. Lasts longer than trackstrap :p
i dont get why you dont just strap em to you ankle
Omg Iโm a crocs fiend just cuz I think theyโre cute and I never thought of using the holes as anchors for trackers
it takes about 2 seconds to put on crocs and i have batteries attached that make them last like 12+ hours
oh ya, i modded my quest 2 for a horror-themed strap for halloween horror games ๐
thats sick! i wanna do something like that

Is the quest good at running vrchat?
As good as an Ender 3 is at printing avatars... but, y'know... an Ultimaker is gonna be a better experience.
most worlds i want to join don't support quest, i only run VRC on PC and use quest linked.
though I got FBT running on my steamVR setup so i rather use that for VRC now
ive designed a bracket to screw into the corner of a room for the index base stations, and i assume it would also work with the vive base stations as well from hearing they are the same unit, printing it now. i think i over engineered it but i rather it be that than under engineered. its also gonna be like a 22 hour print and im only 42% done but thats cuse i got a 0.25mm nozzle on my printer running at 0.1mm layers
Anyone have any tips or tutorials on how to prepare/fix a humanoid model for 3d printing? I tried an auto fixer program and it was just like NO.
I have some blender experience. I'm just not sure what a 3d printer requires, if that makes sense
Model is a vroid model, if anyone have tips specific to that
basically all your meshes need to be solid. Look for standalone faces in blender and extrude them until they have volume
vroid uses cutout a lot which is harder to deal with since the slicer doesn't care about texture
so maybe you may want to use the knife tool to manually cut stuff out before extruding
i often extrude single faces into the body to make it solid
iirc it basically does a boolean and
Wendigo I printed

Very nice! That turned out great!
Thank you, i am new to the resin 3D printing/ 3D printing in general, but good thing is simple enough to do, first time on painting a model
oh sweet! print off straight polygons or did you do any edits to the model? looks really clean.
most of edits was to make sure there where no floating meshes, the bow is super thin so could had made that more thicker.
Looks good. Shame you didn't increase the polycount
You can see every individual face
Yeah was more focused on whether or not was going to be able to print, next time would do that.
Can y'all add me on my new vrchat account its BellaDanger200

I have a 3d printer but idk how to get it to work properly lol
Was gonna sell it to get fbt
What kind? The resin 3d printer that i have was supper simple to use, just need to take extra precautions with the resin
Oh that type of printer, you have to do a bit more to get things right for printing. But it shouldnโt be too difficult, for what i heard the main thing is to have it well level. What i did my self os watch YouTube videos on how people do it.
i have an ender 3 pro
i can help you if you want
Whenever it prints (using the default stuff provided by their flash drive) it only prints to the very side of the left, thus making a same streak

it's really cool to see something we modeled from scratch in our hands like that
Resin printer?
Fdm. Sadly there was a lot of temperature fluctuation
Soo this prescription lens adapter is working with Eye tracking with the Vive Pro Eye. I just need to clean up some verts and model errors. After I finish doing that I will upload this to my thingiverse account. You will need custom supports addon to print this and print it lens side down. I know I'm going to get some negative comments about my choice for print material (ABS), but I chose it for 2 reasons. I notice that when I have eye tracking on and the infrared LED's are on it gets hot inside the headset. I know it's not hot enough to melt pla, but I don't have alot of pla laying around. Also need to get rid of my old abs filament and dont like wasting mats. The lenses that fit in this are Round Glasses 550021 Black from zennioptical.com/p/metal-alloy-full-rim-frame-with-spring-hinges/5500?skuId=550021
Mine cost about $50usd but could have been 12usd cheaper if I didn't have a high index in my prescription. Would anyone be interested in me doing some prints for them?

yooo I need 20 to buy burst fire
What would be the price for one to 3d print one of my avatars and ship it to me in tx
^ in the Before Times, the Long Long Ago, there was a network of distributed additive manufacturing nodes where one could find a printer local to them and leverage the true benefits of the tech. RIP 3DHubs of yore... and good luck to @meager fog , may you find a local printer.
i wanna get a 3d printer for that
i wanna get the models of all my friends and print them and paint them
Resin printer is great for that to get as much detail as possible, the prices are not too crazy now probably can get one really good under $300. But always make your research on how the full progress is done to see if itโs something fir you.
plus the fumes
and curing after
Yeah true of the room were the printer will be is small and not well ventilated. Bit always can get a carbon filter to take some of the fumes smell
Is there a way I could print out my fursona but have it EXACT to this?
I want her done identical so I can mount her on my dashboard in my raptor
Budget is $400-500
the hair, clothing and tail would be the hard part.... the hair and the tail would need to be solidified somehow. the mesh skirt would be better printed seprately or added in another way (depending on scale).
The FDM or resin route would require some airbrushing skillz. Separate pieces made manifold and digitally chopped into pieces for least amount of support material. Glued together and very one-off.
On the other hand, more digital prep work getting the mesh manifold and making sure the colors are mapped to .obj format properly could get you a good file for this polyjet process.
https://www.shapeways.com/materials/high-definition-full-color
That would be amazing
Could I commish one of yโall?
I have all the assets and I made all the assets myself so this will be easy
if... you have good assets... you can get shapeways to print them. but likely some, if not all, the assest are not manafold (all meshes are "air tight" )... if you have blender exp, you could fix those issues yourself. if not commishing someone to do that work would (and then shapeways) would be a likely path.
if you have a preliminary manafold model / mesh you can upload it and get an instant quote to you can determine if it's with in your budget / expectations.
Shapeways is typically overpriced though
back when i was printing for $$$... i couldn't make min wage at the prices they charged for SLS nylon prints. only marketable feature i had was 24 hour delivery time. Shapeways takes 1 - 2 weeks.
Would be down to pay someone to get this done for me lol
Finally made a proper demo vid of nepnep talking

I have like ghost in the shell for years, major has been one of my favorite anime characters. Next step will be to print the tachikomas. Probably much easier to paint

Nope, you have to buy the Taidum on gumroad. Its against TOS of the Taidum to send ppl the files
why do the fins look abit deforms?
kind of looks like they where having first layer issues. or/and used a raft.
yeah it was just first later issues, in cleared up after 1-2 more prints
also any vrchat related 3d print ideas?
Hit me up if your wanting your stuff 3d Printed.... Will hand paint and finish... Thanks Drop your Dm on me....
Everything sculpted and posded to your liking...
does anybody know any good 3d printing services that arent damn expensive?
Me... I can do the 3d prints for you and I won't be expensive, Unless it's over a foot in diamiter and fully painted then something like that starts at around 2k... Smaller figrues about 6 to 8 inches tall not panited I can do for 300 and under... cheapest I went for a small helment to replace the one lost for someones toy I let go for 30 bucks
i can do 10mm x 10mm x 10mm (4.5 inch) prints for free in petg as im starting a business, id prefer honest feedback, i can paint them if needed but it will take longer (i have limited paints)
im not lookin' for printing something for vrc. its a bigger sized prop for a cosplay. around 13x13x13 inches. it can be separated into smaller bits though i think
do you have the stl files?
10/10
is this really yours?
I think this is an image you can find on google IIRC
It is.
Dude I love this (:
Do any of you have recommendations on how to make your models solid, so that they can be 3d printed? :)
Thanks x3
Blender. You just make sure it doesn't have any holes in the model, save as an STL or OBJ, then throw it into your favorite slicer.
rEee!
Could you please show me how?
I'm, so lost
I have a Taidum model aswell, but I keep getting air tight errors,
And I'm not even sure how to print it with a pose
I posed it in Blender and exported as an STL, if you are using CURA or Crealityslicer you have to scale the model down/get it to 0 0 0 because it will be in the sky
That it?
I kept getting Air Tight Errors.
But I WAS importing it as a FBX.

I worked on a project to get this thing I sort-of made 3D printed for a friend, its fully printed, now we're just waiting for the chemical to dissolve the support structures ^^, I'll show you all how it looks in the end!
"Proof that you have a heart."
(If anyone gets the reference)
Ironman, right?
No you would get nothing more than a cheap piece of crap
Finally got around to 3d printing my avatar
I like this! any plans on sharing the STLs or is this just for yall?
Second try 3D printing my avatar; turned out way better :)
Yoooo thatโs so cool
I used a buuunch of supports; it was printed on an anycubic photon S
