also to clarify on the power adapter voltage/amperage thing, voltage and amperage go hand-in-hand with one another. You can trade voltage for amperage, which is part of what your AC adapter is doing, turning 120v or 240v at a low amperage to 5v/12v at a higher amperage

alternatively you could trade amperage for voltage, turning a low-voltage incoming power source into a higher voltage one, but with a lower amperage - see switching regulators, etc
