Or going Subscription based, prioritized small decals then making the game run better? Kinda feel bad for the devs. They give us a game like VRChat, it mostly works fine like all games, some people experience more lag than others, but that's normal. Then, the API seems to go apeshit and everyone starts screaming and whining and crying, even though people with a brain bigger than a monkey can realise that fixing a bug isn't just slapping a bandaid on and everything works again. Recently got into making worlds and just working on fixing a world can show you how it's not just applying a fix and boom.

vrchat almost doubling it's users on new year's was not hard to predict at all, in fact it was easily expected, and didn't surprise me in the slightest. new year's is a big celebration, everyone is inside cuz of covid, and many people got their new oculus quest for christmas. if i was the manager, that woulda told me that i needed to do whatever i can to try and handle double the usual load.

It's fluctuating a little, if you're currently alone in your home world - refreshing the instance and you might be able to have a refreshed friends list and join off someone now. Might be a luck thing but keep at it in the meantime.

@craggy dune Safety Settings and then disable things like animations mainly for non-friends to avoid issues like that. The whole Safety Settings option can be heavily customised to suit your preference in protecting yourself. ❤️

Also people forget that Chillout and Neos, while they're both great games on their own, also don't have as big of a player-base. They could potentially have the same issues VRC have if they were to get a huge influx of people suddenly one night.

you do realize that eve online's massive battles work because of time dilation where server calculations are deliberately slowed down to a fraction such as 5% or even 1% so a 10 minute battle in real time takes a few hours right?

the only way for EVE to perform unaffected by spontaneous super-gatherings of players that i can think of, would be if they had a neural network that could dynamically reallocate network resources to give that particular node traffic off to a more powerful junction, like have some nodes that are extremely high-load capable, and shift it off to there as people start to gather. making that seamless would probably require some genius

Last I checked they monitor player activity and prepare for large battles/gatherings by hand, and allocating network resources is not fully automated. But once again, in Eve online that is not the primary factor on how large player battles can be handled without server issues. Eve online employs a system called time dilation, in which the "time" in a system is slowed down when past a certain player count, and in large battles this can be as low as 1%. That means 1 second of real time game activity takes 100 seconds. The server slows down all calculations, so that it can keep up with the amount of calculations it has to do for the large number of players in the system. Obviously, such a system would not work for a social vr experience. Not to mention, its a different problem all together.

The network issues VRChat has been facing recently are from their API servers, and these are completely agnostic to how many players gather in whichever instance. There is no particular "node" that needs to have more resources than others. I don't know how their API servers are set up, but I imagine its a rather homogeneous network of distributed servers that share the load evenly.

I'm playing on the quest 2, using VD to stream pc vrc. decided to try a pc only avatar - however it's only shown to me as a "robot". I've read that this happens with pc avatars when using the mobile version of vrc (aka the native quest app), but it shouldn't be happening when streaming the pc version, right?
if so, how would i go about fixing this?

well obviously, but if you had a more advanced networking system, you'd have a strong custom api that is built for it as well. if parts of it stopped functioning, it should only affect that part, not the whole system, which is why the node-based compartmentalization logic is dandy.

but it didnt all go down did it? instance servers are self contained and wont affect other instances when they crash. The API servers did have issues but its not like everyone got kicked out, a good portion still managed to remain online. I'd say its decently compartmentalized already to prevent catastrophic failures.
