When I made my first significant particle effect, I made sure to learn how to set it to a dual gesture first. (As in, you need to do two separate gestures to activate it.)
Didn't want to have the issue of it firing off accidentally like so many avatars are spoiled by.
I wish more of the armed avatars (eg those with guns) did this. Would make them much nicer to use.
