i understand that they default by hiding very poor but deleting it will force me to update so many avis, some which i dont have the files for anymore

if you really cared about inclusivity you would start with the quest version of an avatar as the base and then just port that to PC, that would be a lot easier

I have like 2-3 fallbacks for questies to see and I'm perfectly happy with that.
Yeah I don't have complete feature parity on mine because it just isn't feasible. Quest/Android version is just so those users can see me instead of a fallback.

Exactly. So you have options: if you want to be inclusive, make the quest version of an avatar first - porting to PC is ezpz. If you you want higher fidelity / bells and whistles, start with the PC version, and just accept the fact that you're going to have to put in additional work to make that avatar compatible with quest. It's just a limitation of the hardware, you can't have your cake and eat it too.

also like the Imposter system is coming out in the future so if the Avatar can't be squashed onto Quest without being very poor less of an issue if it can't get uploaded at all?
given how long it's taken them to implement features the community has been kicking and screaming for I would just keep the imposter (I fucking hate that name) system out of mind until it's in open beta or something

@Ashy is 100% correct! More & more Q2 users are getting the same message "you were sent home because your system ran out of memory" (or something like that) I'm even getting that when I'm in my home space! We just can't use VRC anymore. Why is this so hard for them to understand...& FIX?!
That's not really an issue with VRChat, but Meta themself that add more and more features while not really optimizing the whole OS.
VRChat isn't the only game having this "out of memory" issue.
Quest 2 is just becoming the new quest 1
Quest 3 will temporarily fix that until eventually it goes the same way

Quest headsets aren't future-proof at all (standalone headsets in general too). That's why I don't recommend them to people that can do PCVR.

At any point, Oculus can disable PCVR on their Oculus software/Quest OS, and VD can stop updating it for a specific Quest (or can be forced to stop updating its software)

Certainly isn't hard to just block updates on them though, if all you are using them for is PCVR, then you should block updates to keep the experience consistent.

Honestly Microsoft/steam could put out an update tomorrow that would render their headsets unusable if they wanted to

question for anyone who may know- I just uploaded an avatar for android build, but its very poor. I wanted to check it out to see if it uploaded properly, so i checked through Mobile since it was convenient. For some reason I can see my android build uploads in the menu, but when i try to swap into them, i see my fallback avatar instead. Is there a setting somewhere that im missing to allow me to see my own avatar?
I've never checked an avatar on quest/android build before so idk where to look

The Avatar Performance Ranking System allows you to see how much a user's avatar is affecting performance via analysis of the components on that user's avatar. You can also use it on yourself to see how performant your avatar is.

as an example, the avatar im talking about has too many materials and too many polygons.
and second thing to note all the other ranks below very poor have a maximum cap to the resource usage so you can be sure what to expect with a poor Avatar but a very poor Avatar could be just a little bit over the line or oh my God that's using more resources than than the entire world and everyone else Avatar put together

VRChat will never add very poor avatars to the Android version. Even better, very poor avatars will be removed from Quest too one day.
If you want to see your avatars, you need to optimize them.
VRchat players can't optimize so prepare for a content apocalypse

vrc considers everybody uploading very poor avatars on the quest to be a failure

Your phone have almost the same SoC as the Quest 2.

One very poor avatar is fine. 40+ very poor avatars and your FPS will be gone. Even the Quest 2 can't handle that much very poor avatars without having 15FPS.

Besides, as you've noted, my 3 year old phone has similar/better specs to a quest. Yet is rendering on a single screen with way more performance overhead, but I'm not allowed to see any VP, yet on quest, I can happily sit in a lobby full of VP easily choosing who I want to see and not using existing tools. Even if the game ran at 15fps, who cares. It's VRC, not cod.
Hell an S23 has like 4x my performance and is 3 years newer... No phone...

More people than you think. For you, running at 15FPS is fine, but for the average mobile player, they will launch the game, their game will run poorly, and then leave a bad review on the play store, and at the end, the game have a average start reviews of 2 stars because VRChat run poorly due to very poor avatars.
Besides. Personally, I never go to large lobbies. Ya know, not everyone plays the same. I like 2-5 people groups max.

Driver4VR, a app that do webcam tracking with your phone camera. When you launch the app for the first time, you have a big text to say that performance entirely rely to your phone, and yet the app have a average start review on the play store of 3.7, where most of the reviews are "it doesn't run well", "it doesn't work" (due to their phone not powerful enough), "I need to put my IP on the app, I won't, this app is garbage" (the app uses OSC, and the IP that you need to put is only the local IP).
People on the mobile gaming market are dumb

I will say I don't think people HAVE to optimize (Like demanding wise, I wish people woudl stop that). With the "Imposter" idea supposedly coming to fruition at SOME point VP won't be necessary. Although it does probably upset alot of the avatar creators once VP gets removed. Because they made the avatar work the best they could woth the knowledge they have. Now they are gonna have to do more work for the Imposter system to even work, or just for the avatar to work st all. Cause as we all know VP isn't JUST an android/quest thing. That shows up on PC too.

Making poor avatars on PC is much easier than on Quest.
But PCs are much more powerful, so they can handle very poor avatars just fine, there is no chance VRChat removes VP avatars on PC anytime soon.
It's not about how easy it is. There are certain things basically throwing you immediately into very poor once implemented
Your previous performance rank doesn't matter, some things gonna be immediately very poor
Example being the thing that requires 2 light sources that never even get activated or GPU particles throwing you over the poly limit and bounds limit
Both will mean instant very poor
Even one is one too many.
Especially as VP's usually are not just close to the limit but at levels that they are easily 2 or more poor avatars.
Let alone medium or better ones.

A big issue with people making mobile avatars is not accepting the necessary (but mostly unnoticeable) down stepping in quality.
Especially Texture sizes.
People use massive textures that already on PC are waaaaay to big for the details, and then even want to use them on the mobile build as well.

How so? The 10mb upload limit is already enforcing texture quality quite a lot
Compressed texture / avatar bundle vs uncompressed texture in memory is 2 very different things

It'd compress stupidly small.
But it's completely raw in memory.
Compressing on upload is not solving memory

they get decompressed when they get loaded
compression only shrinks bundle size

If the texture is only white, I would remove the texture and just set in the material the color white.

If you have a texture that is 100x100 white.
It's originally 10000 pixel values in ram representing the texture in RAW each with individual color values and such.
Compressing it would store information on how to replicate it, rather than the raw value,
So something like "Hey, this texture is 100x 100 White pixels" which is NOTABLY less info.
Cus it only stores that it's 100x100 pixels, and the pixel 1 to 10000 is white. Not everythin individually.
Uppon decompression however it will read that and replicate the RAW file again cus it can not work directly from the compressed file.
So the memory is once again the full 10000 individual pixel values, not the compressed information how to replicate it.
That totally does help and is the way to go!
But not compression (crunch compression for example)
Crunch compression is the only compression method that doesn't take less VRAM
BCn/DXTn/ASTC do actually shrink the VRAM footprint
It's not what most people do think about when compressing a texture tho

Easiest being smaller color spaces and such.

color space as in not using HDR textures? color space information used by image editors isn't retained when unity imports textures

I have an avatar that's 200 something MB I hope it can work regardless. Just dunno how the spell system will work lol
It's pretty well documented, you just add the optimizer component to your avatar and it spells everything it does out for you
it's not going to magically shave 190MB off though

sounds like you have a lot of big textures, lilavatarutils and/or Thry's VRAM calculator can help you nail down your biggest offenders
It has a lot of clothing. Most people I run into had no issue loading even with a decent PC
But others block my avatar xD
For quest especially you're going to want to keep it to one outfit per avatar
It's not impossible, but putting multiple outfits on a quest avatar without tanking your perf rank is a lot harder than on PC

that sounds like pretty solid advice to me. once you get more familiar with tools like blender you'll be able to interrogate your polygons more effectively

im sorry ive been banging my head against this issue for the past couple of days and have frankly no idea what's wrong. I spent a lot of time getting this avatar to Poor (from v.Poor) for android and now it does this.
zero clue what causes this. I suppose what Im trying to get to the bottom of is if this is an issue or bug with the alpha client or (most likely..) my own doing

I even tried duplicating the hair material and just changing the texture lol! Its gotta be something wrong with my model i assume, but its the very first time Im seeing it, ever

Or the textures. If it's persisted for multiple uploads. Make an empty new material and toss it on without the texture. Least remove that as a possibility.

huh okay, whatever I've done looks to have fixed it? now to upload the fix to all the avatars xD
I've removed the FX controller from the upload as well as making a blank material and then selecting just the texture
I know unity keeps track of some extra data in the meta files too, so it might have been either the material itself corrupting for whatever reason or otherwise Ill dig through my FX to see if that was it

I've noticed that ever since the client update, I can't see my avatars anymore? They are very poor, but barely. They worked on an earlier version, but now they say that they cannot be used. Is this a bug or intentional?
Intentional. It was removed quietly in an undocumented update just after the release. You just likely never updated after the release.

that is not the problem. the problem is that the quest is very weak
you can't expect to upload avatars with the same fidelity as PC avatars, which is what a lot of people do regardless of performance rank
because of this, the game runs like ass, and crashes often due to the headset running out of memory
when it comes to the android version, they wanted to make sure the game would run well and not crash all the time. this could be due to a few reasons, but I speculate that playstore/appstore regulations have something to do with it
the playstore has a system in place where if an app crashes too many times on a certain device, it will start warning other users of the same device type that the app is suseptible to crashes
regardless, VP avatars can't be used on mobile. I'd recommend making a more optimized version of your avatar that is at the very least Poor

i have a samsung note 20 ultra the integrated mic works perfectly while im in a phone call or in a discord vc but vrc mobile its just unbelievably bad, and a friend of mine who uses a totally different phone suffer the same problem.

Huh, my 4GB phone only had issues for a minute or two after joining a world and it barely handles 2d stuff.
So maybe the android version assumes there will be at least 4GB, since that is what the Quest 1 had.

So I have the Nintendo Switch Pro controller directly plugged into my phone, and it's working almost perfectly, it's just the right trigger (ZR) button doesn't work at all for selecting options and interacting with world objects.
Actually, I just checked, and the B button works for menu/option selections, but no button works for world interactions, portal prompts, and the wheel menu (menu with expressions, emojis, etc.)

What they are talking about is there maybe a conflict with; the current android version, and the newest VRC SDK.

Feedback and bugs posted to this channel aren't logged, although I will say many of the things you noted are either known issues or intentional changes.
For example, we know interactions are kinda tough, and you can't rotate objects. Those are UX challenges.
Not being able to show Very Poor avatars is intentional and not a bug, Very Poor avatars are not allowed on Mobile.
The mic being static is worrying, you should post a bug on the feedback boards and note your phone model, Android version, etc.
because this is an alpha test while it's still very buggy so they don't want everyone and their dog playing

I have to ask out of curiosity, have anyone gotten the android application to run on any android emulator for PC (possibly mac?)? I did a few test on android 10+ emulators but always had 2 results, either "not supported message" or "app just closes itself instantly" Just asking since it's a biiiiit annoying switching between multiple headsets to test out my quest avatars/projects/better workflow and not have to ask "Does it work? Can you see this too if i toggle on while im on index?" classic questie hunting: "Oh, you questie, can i borrow you a sec and test a thing?!" most have been there at one point who are pc or index only owners.
(I know its not really supported most likely and never will be but still have to ask, no real info was found in "Andoid-info" channel on this topic any tips if it works or will be would be appreciated none the less)

You cannot use, wear, or see Very Poor avatars on Android Mobile. This is not a bug, it is intentional. Avatars are by far and large the biggest source of performance problems on Quest, and we're not interested in carrying that problem forward.
then make them not be very poor?
i had to make a whole new avatar to be able to use a custom one on mobile, getting the rank to at least Poor took a long time
also, here's a question, if we can't use Very Poor avatars on mobile then how are we able to still preview them in the avatars menu?

that raises the likelihood of crashing, and if VRChat crashes too much it'll get pulled from the app store
the very poor performance ranking is also definitely a good sign that something is seriously wrong, especially on mobile
i also click Show Avatar on every Very Poor avatar when i play on quest, and wasn't any lag for me

The microphone output (which is set to 100%) is still glitched, as it still outputs very quietly, even as I'm shouting right onto my phone's microphone. I also tried plugging in an external microphone that works very well on desktop and the result is still the same. Where could I send this feedback to the devs?

The a52s 5G plays VRC mobile pretty well, loading in a lot it did stutter quite heavily, but not sure if that was just early bug or because that phone is forced to use virtual RAM, the a7x series would probably be the ideal.

I was reading up and found your messages lol, yeah, we have tried to help him make their models more optimized and to combine the meshes, never works out and he doesn’t try. Most of his avatars are like hundreds of meshes and materials and like most of the time over 500k polys, sometimes millions
I would imagine it may not come out until the full version of Android is out. IOS is much harder to work with
it also doesn't help that it's another platform to build for, which unlike quest/android, is an incredibly niche platform to build for, more-so than PCVR, so it probably won't get very much support.

We do not know, but it is still an alpha which means it is buggy and not feature complete, we don't know what other features they might add, but it is still definitely too buggy to release.

on the pc version i would just make it so that every very poor avatar shows by default

It's not being dumb, it's to protect their place in the Play Store. Too many crashes mean risk of being pulled out.
Just because your phone doesn't lag, doesn't mean others won't.
It required a pretty high version of Android though, doesn't it? A lot of phones that potentially would lag don't even seem to be able to download it in the first place
Android version doesn't mean anything, that's just the SDK being targeted. It's the same reason V Poor is auto-blocked on Quest (and can only have so many visible before you get the "Memory Low" message)

I agree with very poor Avis being blocked but i think the stats are just a lil too low. Needing under 20k polys makes it so hard to find anything to my preference I'd like to use.
to be fair, they gotta draw the line somewhere, and when people can't even stick to 70k on PC, I don't think a limit increase will actually do anything, hell they already did increase the limits, it used to be 10k, even worse, 20k was the PC limit years ago, which was actually SDK enforced to where you had to use TOS breaking modded SDKS to upload anything above 20k.
Yeah, I understand. I wish the limit was like 35K, excellent quality on PC.
In case you're wondering, 20k tris is a lot already. Take for example, Mario games over the years. Mario 64 was only 752 tris, with some of the new games using 5k.
People can 100% optimize their avatar into 4-5 high poly Marios. lol.

Here is a before an after retopo i did, from 720k polys to 7.5k polys. Could go lower but this was made for pc.

chances are it's still possible (unless we're talking fnaf 4 nightmare + springtrap combined levels of detailed), remember that the shading being a tad screwed up can be fixed with a normal map if needed.
also with impostors being a thing now and the VRC dev's current attitude on very poor avatars, I get the feeling this warning will actually end up coming true within the next few months, possibly right after the new year.
fnaf models generally have a crap ton of endo that will never be seen by normal means that can be deleted

The game simply cannot move forward if users aren't forced to optimise their assets. I'm sure the VRChat developers have already exhausted all efforts in terms of optimising the game/unity engine. I think stricter performance restrictions is the right way forward. It's nice to be able to see everyone's personal avatar in a packed rave with up to 80 users and still be able to move around with a decent framerate. Not very pleasant disabling very poor avatars to achieve playable frame rates and seeing giant fallback bananas and mushroom people. Really breaks immersion and social presence.
Honestly more hard caps would be nice over all on the Android build platform.
Content that is just a shader swapped PC avatar is not "quest ready" like some makers wanna believe.
Cuz you know if oculumetabook cared about crashing like the Play Store does, very poor would not be a thing quest either.

There are cases where you can't work around the limitations, but usually there is.
it took so long, but i finally got it to upload as poor performance rank
and the model looks really broken from decimating it, it has holes in some parts of it, and other parts look blocky
i got it to a little bit over 19000 polys
it started at over 80000 polys
i can finally use it on mobile
i wish i could still play the pc or quest verison, but i only have access to mobile currently

Hello, just wanted to ask if someone has a similar issue with that if FPS are on unlimited then they are not going over 30 but when I switch to capped they go on +-80fps (using xiaomi 12 just saying if in case that is just the phones problem)

when you upload an avatar, it will get a performance rank depending on optimized and how complex it is...
most avatars you see on VRChat are very poorly optimized, so you won't be able to see them on the android client

Has anyone gotten VRC mobile working in an android emulator for easier testing? Was trying to get it working last night with a few different emulators but was getting nowhere with the app not launching

That is the plan, but adding it to iPhone is significantly harder than Android, since they could just adapt the Quest version to be non-vr for Android.
And, it seems like IOS will be its own platform, meaning a third platform to upload to, not something VRChat can get around without a lot of work, or some really creative idea.
Hopefully they stick to the 6 GB of RAM requirements for that platform, given that the iPhone 12 Pro and a 1 TB model of a 3rd gen iPad Pro are the oldest iOS devices with that RAM space, which are 4 to 6 years old respectively at this point.
Highly doubt they'd go lower, if they did then IOS would need different avatar rank metrics from Quest, which would make it an even bigger mess to make content for, best case you just upload your Quest stuff to IOS an it works.
Aight, true that, most of my multi-toggle, but still single-mesh, avatars could only go so low in poly count 🫠

At the very least it would very likely use the exact same restrictions and metrics as Quest, so VRChat could make it automatically swap build target and upload.
Considering it has been found out that, at the very least, the VRChat home has an IOS build, a third build seems like the path they are taking.
when ios releases and they do automatic build target switch on upload ios people gotta wait 6-12 months until they see my avatars

You cannot use, wear, or see Very Poor avatars on Android Mobile. This is not a bug, it is intentional. Avatars are by far and large the biggest source of performance problems on Quest, and we're not interested in carrying that problem forward.
