What's the other major VR headset besides Oculus Quest? I can't recall

Building a new PC for Unreal developing, would you rather go for Ryzen 5950x or Intel i9 12900k?

vivid skiff
fair maple
#

I'm (trying) to use ue5 on my gtx 960
does anyone know some affordable gpus for using unreal 5?

median marsh
#

depends on your budget

#

in my personal experience the gtx1660 works quite well unless you want to do raytracing or a lot of groom stuff

#

one of the cheaper cards which has 6gb memory (as vram is important for unreal)

#

but honestly they are all overpriced at the moment, i bought mine 2 years ago and it was only 50% of what they sell for now -.-

fair maple
#

yeah gtx 1660 now costs almost as much as the rtx 3060ti at msrp

hoary lintel
# vivid skiff Preferrably AMD Ryzen CPUs, you got a lot more cores for cheaper, and it's cruci...

my thoughts as well.
Boss just decided to ask my colleagues as well what they think and there are some massive Intel fanboys there. (Even though im the one working with it, i've already argued that it makes no sense to involve the others but it didnt help)
i dont have anything against one or the other, i just want to get superb performance which was in my opinion AMD
ive just been wondering if there might be any argument for intel that i've missed

median marsh
#

ryzen is the end of an platform, intel may be more futureproof for upgrades

#

also which performs better for you seem to depend on your workload

#

end of day, they seem to be both good cpu's

hoary lintel
median marsh
#

there wont be any new AM4 cpus

#

next amd gen is AM5 with DDR5/PCIx5

#

while intel just started on their new platform

hoary lintel
#

hm right didnt think about that, good point

median marsh
#

if you care about them^

#

there's also workloads where one can profit from faster core speed over higher core count

#

so it depends what suits you

#

quite a few actually

#

a lot of stuff isn't threaded yet

#

i just waited half an hour to fix redirectors 😄

#

and yesterday a few minutes on LOD generation

#

yes probably it is

#

thats why i say, they both have their benefits

#

if you compile a lot, ryzen is probably better choice

hoary lintel
#

yeah ive read that article as well in the morning
it end with a "depends on your work" conclusion, so i wanted to see what others think of it

median marsh
#

didn't you actually? 😄

#

but iirc you have an alder lake?!

#

xD

#

yea yea, efficiency cores and higher tdp than ryzen 😛

hoary lintel
#

well we work in architecture so we dont develop for a broad audience
basically we'll buy 2 PC's
1 for the client to have in their showroom vor VR and Controller Based "gaming" for People to see their real estates
and the second goes to me so i can have an exact idea of how our work will perform on that system

median marsh
#

still 20W more than 5950x

#

how comes?

hoary lintel
#

it is?

#

ive not testet my oculus with my new ryzen 5 at home, seems like there will be a surprise waitng for me ?

median marsh
#

but honestly, that sounds more like a mainboard/driver issue

hoary lintel
#

i can only find forum threads talking about how much a pain in the a++ it can be to connect with an AMD GPU but we're going for 3080ti anyway
maybe im missing something

median marsh
#

see, i was using intel since 25 years... and switched to ryzen with concerns

#

but everything just works fine

#

but i haven't tried VR, so i can't speak of that

hoary lintel
#

ok i've heard a few good arguments now, i'll search for what linus has to say about it but i guess Intel would be the better choice for now, didnt think so at the beginning but im open to admit ive been wrong 😄

#

maybe we'll hook up an AC with the i9 like ltt did

#

wish that new HP Omen case was available as case alone now, that looked like a sweet solution

crimson flame
#

Ryzen works fine with VR and stuff for me, just no thunderbolt

#

Although i am on laptop so maybe things are different on desktop

#

I hope AMD calls zen 4 r9 the 6969x

mighty cosmos
#

I haven't had any issues so far with a 5950x and a Taichi x570 board, might be more of an issue on specific or lower end boards?

#

Only problem I had is that the xmp profile didn't just work like it did on Intel

Had to switch the SOC voltage from auto to 0.95V and it worked fine 🤷‍♂️

#

Interestingly 0.95 is lower than what auto was setting it to

median marsh
#

...

#

should i start to rant about ram issues on intel? 😛

#

but yea, i think my xmp on amd also doesn't work, but i haven't bothered yet

mighty cosmos
#

Could be the same thing like it was on mine, just setting the SOC voltage to 0.95 works fine
Default was set to something like .98

I think auto was setting the voltage too low when booting up which caused issues

median marsh
#

that's all related to memory right? because i actually haven't even read up much about XMP

mighty cosmos
#

Yeah

median marsh
#

i just know for a fact that my memory is adverted with XMP compatibility and that it's now running with 2800 instead of 3600MHz

#

because it's probably actually only 2800MHz memory which was tested to perform well at 3600MHz

mighty cosmos
#

Yeah mine has a 3200mhz xmp profile but I couldn't get it above 2600-2700mhz without increasing the SOC v

median marsh
#

i guess i'll just keep it for later, when i feel i could need an upgrade 😄

#

on my 3rd gen i7 i was bored when it was busy with tasks

#

on the 5950x it stresses me out to be constantly working because everything wents through 😄

mighty cosmos
#

lol

#

Lots of factors to consider. What CPU, MOBO etc?

median marsh
#

what's your current memory configuration?

#

2x8GB?

#

nvm, the board only got 2 memory slots, so you would have to pick 2x32GB at least

median marsh
#

i would check the memory compatibility list of your mainboard

#

basically they should work all, but it is what it is...

#

and get sure that they don't hit your cpu cooler because some modules are kinda high

mellow galleon
#

check your motherboard QVL list and pick any available matching

Which PC components are a must when you want to develop a big game in unreal engine 5(nanite, lumon, megascans etc)?

median marsh
#

a keyboard, a mouse and a monitor

serene scaffold

and the rest

stoic ore
#

Yeah and a mousepad

serene scaffold

dont forget speakers

On the serious notee

serene scaffold

cpu, ram, and mobo are a must, gpu also since.. yknow, so that leaves.. hmm well a psu ofc, cooling too, then maybe some ssds..

wind egret
#

Basically you need all the components, except for sound/capture cards and other special purpose hardware.

median marsh
#

there they list what epic uses

serene scaffold

keep in mind that LED is not a must 😏

stoic ore

I will paint my components, no need for LED

#

Hi all, I'm planning on getting a new computer soon, and running UE5 is high on my list of priorities.

My wife and I travel for work a lot, so a heavy-duty laptop is a necessity for me.

In my price range, I have a choice between a build that has 32gb of RAM and 1tb SSD, and one that has 16gb of RAM and 2tb SSD.

All other things being equal (graphics, processor, chassis build, etc.) is there a strong justification to pick one of these builds over the other?

serene scaffold
median marsh
#

i second this^

agile haven
#

How portable are external SSDs? This is something I've literally never looked into.

median marsh
#

they are like usb sticks nowadays

agile haven
#

Oh whaaaaat?

median marsh
#

imagine an NVME ssd in a small usb case

#

which exist

#

if you know how "Large" an nvme ssd is, you get it

agile haven
#

Woah. How much storage is on that?

median marsh
#

whatever you can afford 😄

agile haven
#

XD

astral musk
#

you provide the SSD, so whatever you want

agile haven
#

Okay, I guess I should ask: How much should I care about Intel vs AMD processors?

To me, this is just a thing I need, and big numbers/newer are generally better. I know some people have strong opinions, though, so should I care?

median marsh
#

however you need usb 3.1 to profit from an NVME, otherwise an external 2,5" ssd is perhaps better in price/value

#

specially the big ones >2TB

agile haven
agile haven
#

Thanks! That clinches the decision for me.

hoary lintel
#

upgrading a cpu on a laptop might not be a concern to have, the way they are built nowadays

hoary lintel
#

yeah but that person asked that question with a laptop to buy in mind

stoic ore
#

Next year I am going to the university and I need a strong laptop which can run unreal engine 5 where I can build seriously big projects. Does anyone of you know any good laptops?

hoary lintel
#

watch LTT How to buy a laptop video as there is no "good" laptop for everybody
generally speaking for that workload you should go for gaming laptops

timber cobalt
#

just a thought: how easy to use a computer remotely for gamedev?

#

just hitting up anydesk or win built-in remote desktop and do stuff

serene scaffold
timber cobalt
#

I mean using a decent but not a powerful notebook to connect to the main pc, that is good enough for gamedev

#

my logic is all the calculation would be on the PC and I would only controlling it from somewhere via remote desktop

#

of course a decent internet is necessary on both places

serene scaffold
timber cobalt
#

I downloaded parsec, and actually it is no so bad

errant peak
#

I've done remote work between a desktop and laptop in the same room as a sort of KVM setup. I don't remember which software I used but the latency was really bad if not using a wired connection and sorta bad with a wired connection

#

I'm also highly sensitive to latency though

#

The typing was probably around 50 to 100ms off, which was just enough to throw off my cadence

timber cobalt
errant peak
#

Maybe less. I didn't actually measure the latency, but it was enough to throw me off

timber cobalt
#

right now I connected the notebook to my mobile

errant peak
#

Nice!

#

Might have been the software I had issue with

timber cobalt
#

suprising actually

errant peak
#

I use my tablet with smart something as a secondary screen and drawing tablet, and it works really well

#

It is over USB 3 and directly connected to the computer though

timber cobalt
#

ah, yeah, I was thinking about using my ipad for that

#

could be really useful and not so expensive like a cintiq :D

#

I am happy now with that Parsec as a remote desktop solution. Few times a year I may have to work from a remote location, and I would hate to buy a high end notebook for that days. Also there is no chance I would bring my desktop :D
But that is a cool solution.
And my mobile internet is limited to 10 mbps, and was still fine.

hoary lintel
#

we've tried some things in our office like Teamviewer and Anydesk, but they all have these waiting times included now to remind you to pay for their service.
pretty daring of them, cause both their services are slow and the picture quality can degenerate fairly quick. in the sense that in anydesk, all colors are shown falsified

we use parsec now, and its the best remote "Working/gaming" software we've ever used

stoic ore
timber cobalt
#

I used Parsec to remote connect to my PC from my Macbook Air. I used mobile data to try how would it work from a different location and it is promising.

serene scaffold
#

you'll have to scrounge for that 4.69 then 😢

spare mango
#

Um what?

serene scaffold
#

i think the hard drive is a normal disc, not ssd - i would recommend ssd

median marsh
#

and the PSU is way beyond what the system needs

serene scaffold
#

was gunna say

median marsh
#

you can get along with 650W or probably less

serene scaffold
#

might be more wattage than needed, and modular isn't really a big deal

#

if you can get cheaper than great

median marsh
#

yea, half modular is fine enough, you gonna connect the ATX cable anyhow 😄

serene scaffold
#

bronze, gold, copper, plat are lies also, just get whatever

#

i swear windows keeps going up in price..

median marsh

and maybe go for 2x32GB instead of 4x16GB

unless the system supports quad channel

serene scaffold

not familiar with that mobo, im an amd boy

spare mango
#

Oh, thanks. I am not a fan of Good looking pcs, I need High performance for simulations, rendering, etc. This was my first list so mistakes are there. Please recommend where I can improve.

serene scaffold

read above

#

could also get some ram and then get more when its on sale

#

g skill are pretty common

median marsh
#

for the tower, maybe look at be quiet! Pure Base 500 if it's available where you live

serene scaffold
#

i have some in my pc that i built 2 or 3 years ago and i can still buy more for it

median marsh
#

it costs like half the price, and overall quality is good in my opinion

serene scaffold
#

if you don't plan on using both gpu slots, go with a micro-atx, it's the same thing but not 9'x12', instead 9'x9' - you still have cpu, 4 ram slots, gpu, etc

#

im also a fan of the modular thermaltake case

median marsh
#

i wont go with micro-atx

#

they often have less memory slots and overall full atx has usually better specs

spare mango
#

I plan to add another you when the prices go down and my pocket allows it.

serene scaffold
#

mine has 4 ram slots 😛

median marsh
#

how many M2 slots?

serene scaffold
#

i think 2, but i dont use em

#

its just ssds and sata

#

been thinking about getting an m2 though 🙂

median marsh
#

save some cash on psu/case and invest in an SSD

#

samsung evo is pretty good and you get it for ~$150 for 1TB

#

not adding an SSD in such a new system would be a stupid move

serene scaffold
#

also, pretty sure the cpu comes with a stock cooler (unless it says it doesnt)

median marsh
#

and damn those gpu prices...

#

wouldn't pay that for a 2060

astral musk

the 10900K does not come with a stock cooler.

I have a monitor that has 120 and 240hz for refresh rate. I currently have it running at 120hz. Developing on unreal can hog up some resources from the pc so I'm wondering if I run the monitor at 240hz would that take away some of the resources that I could be giving to unreal?

mighty cosmos
#

No, the monitor is able to display 240hz, doesn't mean it will somehow force unreal or whatever to run at that or take any extra resources

royal aspen
# silver nexus I have a monitor that has 120 and 240hz for refresh rate. I currently have it ru...

Depends on if you have vsync or gsync on. Both of these stop the game ticking faster than the display rate of the display which harshen the experience when the game could be running faster without showing the frames.

So if these are on then jumping from 120 to 240 could demand more resources yes. If they are off, the overhead is unlikely to be noticeable but you could expect anything outside of unreal to also tax resources a little harder, it would be hard to say your performance be observably worse with 240 so long as vsync/freesync/gsync is off — even with those on you’ll have a better experience with the higher refresh rate if you can hit it. If you aren’t hitting frame rates higher than these then it’s unlikely gonna be any difference resource wise

#

if liquid in aio cooler is distilled or deionized water does it means that it will not when leaked instantly kill gpu or motherboard?

errant peak
magic parrot
#

So i will heave some time in this scenario?

errant peak

Impossible to really say

If you had a leak, shutdown the computer immediately. Unplug it. And let it dry for a day or two

#

You might be lucky, you might not

magic parrot
#

What chances of leak on average? I think with time they are increasing?

errant peak
#

I personally don't trust liquid cooling having had bad experiences. However I wouldn't be able to give any estimate on leak probability. I would assume the chance to leak would increase over time. This is one reason I'm personally not a fan: higher maintenance in the form of periodic inspections for signs of leaks.

#

Well a 3080 msrp is 700

#

6800xt is 650

It depends on how much better the next gen of cards are right?

That’s not what I’ve heard

devout pendant
#

i have a iphone and windows and no problems pairing stuff

#

but i can not develop apps for it…

#

hmm

#

because apple is overpriced generally, but their software solutions are really solid and sometimes people use them for a long time, then it is understandable

#

yeah i just like how apple devices works and how they look, overall macos is easier to use and many people say that it's also better for coding, studying etc.

#

vim is universal 🙂

royal aspen
serene flame
#

I want it to last 6/7 years again at least, so a 3060 probably won't stand up to that. Don't plan to replace it anytime soon. 4000 series is out of the question since it almost certainly won't be here until post-Q3, and that's in this current dreadful supply market - I want it before April ideally, to be able to claim back on the tax year in UK.

#

Just seem to be so many mixed reviews about every different card.

#

And ray tracing performance on the NVidia cards apparently is so much further ahead than AMD's equivalents

royal aspen
#

The raster performance on amd is better

#

The ray tracing on any platform isn’t fast enough to utilize at high resolution without legit compromises to image quality and latency

But I'd rather have a higher-spec card that is underworked than a lower spec that is at it's peak all the time. It has to last, and it has to cope with a UE5 workload 10-14 hours a day for 6/7 years.

#

nah not at these hyper-inflated prices

#

If I really wanted to I could stretch to one but the performance difference seems marginal

#

Yeah it's just wasted money though 😦 There's no resale value on them after a few months. Gonna have a market flooded with 2nd hand crypto cards

#

Yeah, true

#

As usual, it's always the wrong time to buy 😄

royal aspen
#

Going from a 970 to a 1660ti even is a upgrade

#

If your looking for just a top tier card it will always be changing and you won’t really be able to have great confidence in the market resting for 6-7 years

#

But I mean if the 40 series RTX cards cost 4,000 dollars shrug

serene flame
#

What I'm thinking atm is just suck up the inflated costs anyway and get the gigabyte 3080, do the thermal pad upgrade, and leave it be for a while

#

It's probably mega overkill

#

But I don't think costs for retail cards are going to decrease anytime soon, probably the opposite

#

I saw MSI doing something like cancelling past pre-orders, then relisting for inflated prices. Even the vendors are in on the game at this point

royal aspen
#

If your able to get a 3080 in stock then go for it. But yeah a 970.. like the latest rx6500xt is readily available rn and it in most cases is gonna be a upgrade and support much of the latest stuff unreal would use for a retail price that is supposed to be around 250 dollars https://youtu.be/kE8XUi28JNc

I really really do not recommend that card

#

But I just would say if you pull the trigger on just about anything you’ll have a better experience

#

3080 is kinda like the most unobtainable card rn

#

But you could get lucky or pay out of nose on one. I don’t know that it will last you 6-7 years but it will serve you well for some time. Idk why it’s got only 12gb of ram but at least it’s fast ram

#

eBay is your best bet and prices yknow aren’t great

#

It worked out fine for my rx6900xt. I overplayed at 1200 on it back then but now my card goes for 2000 so idk

serene flame
#

My 980 has done pretty well tbh, really stood the test of time. After to 1000 series it just went off the rails

royal aspen
#

Yeah like the 10 series dominated the 9 series

#

20 series did little

#

30 series made up for 20 series and then some due to competition from amd

#

Yeah you shouldn’t

#

There are probably stock alerting discords you could join to try to snipe one at retail

#

I don’t know of the Canadian equivalent to nerdspeak but there probably is one

serene flame
#

Yeah ebay I don't really trust, and I also wonder about potential RMA/warranty issues buying from there

#

Just for peace of mind I'd rather buy from retail

royal aspen
#

Nah that’s all through manufacturer. But you definitely need to be careful of fake sales

serene flame
#

take that scalpers

royal aspen
#

Unfortunately the reality of the situation with eBay is that Newegg and Antonline have eBay accounts they unload their stock on

#

Like I got my 5950x from an ant online eBay post

#

You just have to be careful to check who you’re buying from

#
#

That’s what I found too

#

Which is why I went eBay

#

Amazon wanted 1700 for it, I got 1200 which was about 200 over retail

#

Sealed, new in box

#

Yeah it’s weird of how much a upgrade the 3060 is to a 2060

#

A rx6600xt is a legit upgrade to 2060 but a 3060ti is beyond a rx6600xt (but not the non ti)

#

Nvidia has a really weird pricing mechanism

serene flame
#

I think also though, the 3000 series is already so close to it's peak performance when it comes from the factory. Overclockers haven't been able to squeeze much more juice out of them AFAIK

#

Whereas back in the 1000 series days, you could boost them a fair bit

#

I think that's where part of that performance bridge has come from, just higher base clocks/tuning etc.

#

And no doubt advances with drivers etc.

royal aspen
#

You can get more out of the amd chips in that regard but idk if overclocking is great these days yeah

serene flame
#

Hardware is so outrageously fast anyway these days it's almost not worth voiding your warranty over it

#

Unless it's just for the memes

royal aspen
#

Yeah idk, they are all power hungry and probably will be difficult to fit into your case

#

The 3090 and rx6800 at least

#

Id recommend the cpu just because stuff like animation and Niagara can be cpu thread utilizers.. but additionally if you need to pipe out video you’ll have many cpu threads to output better quality than the onboard encoder with gpu

@royal aspen we ended up going for a threadripper 3960x and a rtx a6000 (the budget kind of went out the window a bit lol) with the 128gb ram with the option to upgrade to 256 in the future

grave stratus
#

Hey peeps, I've been away from unreal engine for about 2 years now due to school and I was thinking of getting back to UE5 since my research focus is graphics and physics simulations and I think there's a lot to learn from it. For people who work with source code in UE4 or UE5, what hardware should I be looking for? I'm mostly looking for a laptop since I move a lot for work but I don't want to spend a lot of money on something I don't need.

#

Also, with the shortage in hardware, I'd probably have to go for something more expensive anyway because most of the best-value laptops are out of the market. I think I'm stuck with either a bad old gen one or a more expensive new-gen one

flat glade
#

any post-maxwell gpu can run nanite and it's surprisingly efficient for what it does but lumen is very expensive

#

if your goal is just to study how they work and not really realtime I think you should be okay with aiming for the equivalent of a midrange gaming laptop. If you want to do a lot of source builds you are going to want a lot of ram+cores as well

grave stratus
#

It's both study how they work and trying to implement some of my work in them. I'm looking to start implementing some of the features mentions in research papers with the help of UE. But yes it'll most likely include a lot of builds. I was wondering if an 11th gen I7 with 32 GB of ram might be enough or if I have to bump that up. I'm not too worried graphics but the problem is that most laptops with powerful CPUs only offer options like 3060+

#

I was thinking of a Lenovo legion 5 or Asus Zephyrus G15 but I genuinely cannot find them anywhere. There's a huge shortage where I live and I'd mostly have to buy one of these year's upcoming 12th gen intel laptops or suck it up and get an Alienware since it's one of the very few things that are not out of stock right now

#

I just don't feel like I need 64GB of ram, esp DDR5 or a 12th gen intel processor at the moment

#

and the GPU is NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070
and RAM is 16gb (but I will upgrade to 32gb)

#

And last question, is the i7-10700KF is better than the i7-11700F (I saw that the i7-10700KF is more expensive than the i7-11700F) ?

#

Is it because the i7-10th has the "K" letter and the i7-11th not ?

median marsh
#

oh nvm, the other one is F

short bramble
#

I saw that with the "K" letter, the CPU is faster than without "K" letter

median marsh
#

The F series range of processors is basically the multiplier locked version of the KF processors.

short bramble
#

so I don't know if one more generation (11th) without "K" is better than a 10th generation with "K" ?

median marsh
#

so the KF can be overclocked easier (at least on multiplier level)

short bramble
#

but what is better ? one more generation or the "K" ?

median marsh
#

i think most people saw 11th gen as downgrade to 10th gen

short bramble
#

oh so the i7-10th with KF is better I guess

median marsh
#

the 11th gen has better tdp (probably because of lower base frequency) and supports pciex4

vivid skiff
#

I wonder if the AMD equivalent to that can live up to the performance in lesser price

short bramble
#

I get an F version because I don't need integrated graphics if I take Nvidia RTX 3070

#

F = no integrated graphics

#

right ?

#

I guess it's better for the computer to not have integrated grpahics if I already have a GPU installed

median marsh
#

you can probably disable it in the bios anyways

#

sometimes the ones with iGPU are cheaper for some reason

short bramble
#

so F version is better I guess

median marsh
#

if you don't plan to use iGPU or to overclock you can get any version i think

short bramble
#

ok thanks

short bramble
#

So 32gb of RAM + GeForce RTX 3070 + i7-10700KF is a great setup for UE4/UE5 you think ?

Any tips for European Desktop-as-a-service with GPU providers? I've been planing to go for Azure NC8as_T4_v3 as we are already using Azure for infrastructure, but those VM's are not available at all these days. AWS G4dn.2xlarge and Google N1 standard 8 are obvious alternatives, but are quite a bit more expensive. I know some American providers like CoreWeave, but I'm guessing it the machines should be in Europe to minimize delay.

Is this enough to create medium-size games in Unreal 5? I know they recently recommended 64gb RAM, but I'm creating stylized graphics games, not like the demo they show. I'm worried about RAM. As far as I know, DDR5 has some issues going beyond 32GB at the moment.

tall grove
#

Good evening everyone. Quick question. I am currently debating about possibly upgrading my computer cpu and was curious what is better for Unreal Engine? My setup is as Intel Core i9-10900K | ASUS Rog Strix z490-E Gaming | Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black | Corsair Dominator Platinum 3200MHz 32GB | NVIDIA RTX 3070 Ti | Fractal Design Torrent RGB Black | Corsair RMx Series RM850x | 1x SAMSUNG 970 2TB M.2 | 1x SAMSUNG 970 500GB M.2. Should I go 5950X or 12900K?
I read the CPU was the most important part for Unreal and that a decent GPU like the 3070/3080 is more than enough. I guess I could look at other parts of the system as well. Thanks!

brave panther
#

Oh good, I was worried about the RAM thing.

#

I could, but I heard that DDR5 RAM is instable at the moment if beyond 32 GB. I don't know if that's true or not.

#

I mean, I heard there's blue screens sometimes.

#

Too new, I think.

#

I probably have to wait for a BIOS update, but hope that the 32GB is good enough for now.

#

I'll just share what the iBuyPower support staff said: "You may come across stability issues. That's another one of the reasons we don't offer higher capacities, blue screen errors are more prevalent with higher capacities. Other than that, the RAM should be compatible."

#

Has anyone had any success with DDR5-6000 (64 GB) in a i9 z690-p setup?

#

Well, I want to learn Unreal, create a stylized graphic RPG, indie focus. If 32 GB can handle that, then I could stay with that until I need to go further. I don't think I'm doing anything intense.

tall grove
#

I see, well I am just learning and designing as I learn my ideas. Outside of that, I do Audio Production with FL Studio 20 and some art stuff plus the occasional gaming.

#

Oh okay, Cool

brave panther
#

Oops, I got confused with who was talking to who, sorry.

brave panther
#

I just bought a 2x32 GB kit (DDR5-5200). Quite happy!

#

The problem was that duel kits don't work well (4 x 16 GB) for 12th gen Intel so far with the z690 mobos. Having one kit is preferred for DDR5.

It appears to be an ongoing issue with duel kits. One stated in a forum:

and if you check the the Z690 + DDR5 discussion here and elsewhere, you will find that basically nobody could get 2 DDR5 kits running - at least not at the rated frequency.

DDR5 has far higher capacity per module than DDR4. It is one more reason more to stay with 2 higher capacity modules than trying to combine 4 modules.

#

Idk if that is nonhedt

Ok so or i could buy two 32 GBS and I'll sell the one I have now or put 2 extra 16 gbs

Same brand too?

Nah I have 8+8

I have like a team force or something are those good

@devout pendant

#

Hmm ok

bright magnet
#

I don't really care Abt rbg but a little doesn't matter to me

#

Btw is 3600mhz and 18cl good

#

The 18 cl seems kinda high so idk

#

Yeh but I'll get 3600 for now withy 3000 and let the 3600 run at 3000 and later when I move the 3000 for 3600 too I'll just run it at 3600

royal aspen
#

600mhz gain on intel 9700k is probably not worth the effort

#

But sometimes the 3600mhz is priced similar so whatever

bright magnet
#

3600 was like 10 bucks more

royal aspen
#

Ye

bright magnet
#

I alr bought it now just waiting for it to deliver

royal aspen
#

But just so your aware, there probably won’t be a 3000mhz xmp for it

#

Will have to set it to run at 3000mhz manually

bright magnet
#

Then when I get another 3600 I'll just set it to 3600

royal aspen
#

Aye, the 9700k is a odd one because it’s a 8core 8thread due to intels security issues over hyper threading back then it will probably deprecated quickly

#

But you could certainly do that

#

I would probably put that money towards a tenth gen replacement cpu instead though, even if it’s at 3000mhz ram
The 10700k has twice as many threads for example

#

You’d have to check if your board supported it though

bright magnet
#

That'll be my next upgrade

royal aspen
#

Would definitely speed up shader compile times if your working in unreal

bright magnet
#

Yeh most of the time that takes 10 minutes but what would ram speed up

royal aspen
#

Ram speeds kinda vary in effect based on architecture but still like the measurable amount of performance gained is going to be varied based on the task at hand

#

The thing I notice most with faster ram would be things like the mouse being a bit snappier in games and stuff

bright magnet
#

Most of the timewith unreal engine on takes 98-99% of my ram

royal aspen
#

If you’re running out of ram that would slow things a lot

bright magnet
#

I couldn't even run discord

#

I could but gardly

#

So it was a good purchase?

royal aspen
#

You’re going from 16gb to 32gb yeah?

bright magnet
#

48

#

16 to 48

royal aspen
#

So two 8gb and two 16gb?

bright magnet
#

Yes

royal aspen
#

Yep but if performance is something you’d like, like in gaming and stuff, using just the two 16gb sticks will perform better on that generation of intel

bright magnet
#

May I ask why?

royal aspen
#

Intel runs better with a single dual channel back then than two occupied dual channels

bright magnet
#

Is it a big change?

royal aspen
#

No

bright magnet
#

So for like 6 months it won't matter

#

Will prob buy another pair of 2x16s in 6 months

#

Or a new cpu

royal aspen
#

I think at 32gb you might not need the extra 16gb, so I’d try that and only do the 48gb setup if you find yourself running out of ram still

royal aspen
bright magnet
#

If 32 can run unreal

median marsh
#

are the 16gb one stick?

#

or 2x8?

bright magnet
#

2x8

#

I think u can't have three stick of ram

#

Only 1, 2 or 4

#

I think not sure

royal aspen
#

Tbh ideally if your getting four sticks even you buy them all at the same time in a kit 4x16

#

So if you’re familiar with selling off things, and you need 64gb then that’d be my advice

#

That way you get something that is vetted to run at the advertised speeds

#

(In theory)

bright magnet
#

Or whole pcs

#

I think it's globale but not used in any other countries i think

royal aspen
#

Cool cool

bright magnet

They just arrived and it like loaded within 1 minute

instead of 10-15
