Now, I need to find a thermocol or cardboard panel that I can position next to my case, to protect it temporarily.
Sweden is just 3 hours behind India. Hopefully, they'll process the request quickly.
does the panel from the other side fit?
Yes. They have the same connectors.
Okay. Lots of stuff done. After work, I need to carry the glass and some trash down to the Trashium Disposarium.
what you can do is mount the other side on the glass side, and then lay the tower flat on the desk
that way both sides are closed
but in my experience... you can go a long time without sidepanel 😄
🤔 This is a good idea.
I am not worried about dust, so long as I can find that cardboard panel to close it, while I sleep.
When the computer is running, the airflow in there is robust enough to just throw the dust out.
And apparently, my PC doesn't care about the panel either. Temps are cool at 42C.
you'll probably get better thermals without the panel unless your case is really cramped and relies on forced flow
Right now, it's the same temps either way. 42C.
The case is huge. Fractal Torrent White.

AND ECC

Be honest, how much does it cost?
Also, how much does that 5090 cost, I'm surprised it is even in stock
This builder doesn't show the individual costs.
OR at least I don't know how to view them... yet.
So 5k for 4, and probably 2.5k for non-ecc oof
When the 64gb sticks officially come out, they'll probably be expensive af
NICE
So, probably 2k for those
Okay, less than 1k for 256gb non ecc, kinda reasonable
Now, let's theorise, we got mobos who can have ram up to 8k GHz speeds right?
Zen6 will probably have its sweet spot at that, but likely overclockable to way over that like maybe 10k GHz
The only thing that's left is...could 4x64gb be clocked at 8000 GHz without exploding, that's the question
I THINK we can safely overclock them to 6,000MHz.
That's already an Expo profile setting, so.
Maybe 6,500 is safe with proper thermal insulation.
I wonder if we can install Windows and keep it on one of those RAM chips.
Windows needs like... 60GB something... of space plus a bit free.
It is possible to set ram memory as storage, so if you ever wanted to do a virtual machine on ram, it would be possible
But the easiest would just be Linux, there are a few distro which only use your ram as storage (for paranoia reasons)
Linux is all well and good, but we must achieve maximum compatibility with RAM for Windows, bestest, bigly OS.
In fact, the Windows OS must be an unalienable part of the 64GB RAM chip itself.
Amazing! Fractal support already replied. 🙂
Okay, this is has been the BEST support ever.
given their pricing... one should be able to expect some good support
reinstalling windows after each reboot or bsod ? 😄
perfect clean installs tho, still boot sector has to be somewhere
Talking of windows, I've ordered a new laptop. It's coming with w11. I'm scared.
Why? W11 is fine.
Every other update seems to brick your pc.
w11 is atrocious, kill it and get w10 IoT or LTSC
I'm probably going to buy a 100% legit w10p key.
We must have 64GB 10,000MHz perma Win11 RAM stick.
Seriously?
Their updates haven't given me any trouble so far.
In fact, I got two biggie updates today. No probs.
sadly it is, like yesterday update broke lots of apps
didn't win10 support end soon?
In like 6 months.
Win11 has an LTSC version too.
ltsc until 2035
Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, meaning no more security updates, bug fixes, or technical assistance will be provided after that date.
thats the WAAS/ home versions
is that LTSC the professional version?
Driver moment
Wait, do you perhaps have an Nvidia GPU?
I don't have w11 yet.
How did the updates brick your pc though
I didn't say it did.
Ah gotcha, because several people I know just had a black screen after windows update updating things it shouldn't have like drivers
Yeah. I'm just gonna buy a copy of w10p for like £5
Does it get different drivers too?
Fair
w10 eol soon
i would just run a debloated 11
I don't like it but will have to get used to it or use Linux
w11 update at work is requiring everyone to get either a new laptop or a memory upgrade because our PCs idle at 15 fucking gb now
What the actual fuck
w10
Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC is intended for fixed-function, specialized, commercial devices that require a long support lifecycle of 10 years.
This is the version available at present.
It's meant for clean installations only, not for overwriting an existing windows. So format disk first.
Hardware and Processor requirements links on that page.
🤣 My side panel-less PC is actually making my surroundings cooler. 🤣
hmm not sure that's possible
my freezing hand disagrees with you.
Disclaimer: Slight hyperbole, but my hand is cold.
Does anyone use AMD with unreal?Would be a 9070xt to be more specific. Should I take something into account before regretting buying it?
I use AMD, a 7800x3D with UE.
No problems with it. In fact, it's done pretty well by me.
Can you use lumen hardware and stuff like that?
NVidia is better at raytracing, while Radeon lags behind in that aspect.
Other than that, everything else will be just fine, as far as I know.
I can tell you that 9070 xt is similar in perforance to a 5070 in terms of ray tracing, but with 16gb you'll be able to do quite a bit more
I couldn't test DLSS I guess, anything else I should keep in mind?
Turns out I was right about my panel-less Fractal freezing me.
The air that thing is blasting out is awesome.
I was testing the size of a piece of thermocol and when I put it up against the case, the fans almost blew it off. 😄
💪
💪
get a model which doesn't have the 12 volt high failure rate cables, some have it, some don't
good old 3x8 pins is way better in basically every single way
This is how my Torrent slept last night.
Oh, the shame! I must endure until the replacement panel arrives. I must.
Oh no, no. It dropped away from the case, from my careless fingers.
The glass was on the bathroom floor.
The case was on a bad stool.
Oh like far away
Next time you gotta chalk your hands before you do anything w/ pc
Next time, I'll do what I did the last MANY times I cleaned this. Remove the glass panel BEFORE I take it into the bathroom.
I have no clue why I decided to remove the panel IN the bathroom, this time.
Silly
Funny enough, this looks much better than what I imagined it would be
So imagine this:
Your pc with a missing side panel
And now, a thick winter patchwork blanket with tones of different colours that don't match with anything on top of it which covers both the side panel, the other side and the top
🤔 And perhaps a drum with scrap inside it and set on fire?
You have a drum and some scrap?
No. I don't have spare blankets or the ability to patch them either. So, we'll go with it.
Gotcha
🛢️
That’s what I thought your case looked like
Kinda like your case cleaning effort haha
Why take it to the bathroom btw
Have you tried using a vacuum with it
Sure. But, the blower is better.
Oh, yeah. I did this time.
A bit of a difference there was. The amount of dust blown out was slightly less.
But, only slightly.
Like, there were three dust balls less than without the vacuum.
My side panel is almost out of Sweden now.
I hope it gets here soon. My PC fans are dropping my room temp by 1C. 😄 At least in the area where I sit near it.
looking at those temps in india, it seems it'd be welcome 🤣
True, IF I didn't have a 5-star rated AC at home that keeps my room at a lovely 26C - dry during the summer. 🙂
But because I DO have it, my right hand is cold. 😄

Tarifs are temporary, big tech company greed is forever
Talking about Hardware, I just want to leave this here. I've always used a very mild computer for Unreal, as an educator I want my machine to be relatable by my students in the way of "If I can run it, you can run it too". But lately I wanted to improve a lil my rig, maybe with a new graphics card, (I own a 3060 12GB), but due to the state of the video cards market inaccessible prices I thought "Maybe I should Improve my old Ryzen 5 3600X for something new". Even when I doubted I was going to get a huge improvement by just getting a slightly newer version upgrade to my CPU I am now completely surprised by the results. I got myself a Ryzen 9 5500X, maybe one of the fastest CPUs that my old motherboard can handle, but boy! Am in the ninth cloud right now with the jump in performance. I practically double the engine performance in all the projects I tested.
From Valley of the Ancients, the Matrix City, Electric Dreams and Dark Ruins everything doubled FPS across the board. I mean it was a 120$ upgrade, that's all, and know am wondering how many of you might be suffering from this kind of CPU bottleneck as I did.
Moral of the story, check CPU prices before you get a new incredible expensive video card, you might get the same surprise as me,
Cheers!
It hits quite special when I have a quad core CPU still xD
5800x3d is still like the 3rd best cpu for gaming im pretty sure
5th one after the zen 5 x3d, but still insanely good for its price
Even the 5950x is really good performer for its price

Called it
they were only delayed 90 days I think and there's still a 100+ percent tariff on china unless it literally changed today
On Friday, they issued a statement exempting some electronics from China.
I can only find said statement reported on one news site, so they might have changed their minds.
Better just to assume you have to pay X bribe at every customs port in the US, from now on.
i have no idea why electronics weren't immediately exempt. i don't see finished goods like that being made here for a while
Probably because it takes time to explain these things to a dim bulb and have him sign the exemptions.
Something new to remember.
GPMI!
problem is, those cables will never pass the safety tests to enter western market(or at very least, EU)
finding a typeC cable that safely handles 100W is already rare in EU
No worries. You will get it about the same time micro nuclear reactors become household appliances.
US gov doing so much stuff news outlets are actually struggling to keep up
Meanwhile a react streamer and his editor casually keeping up with it
Check the latest article about the Australian who got deported with his visa cancelled.
Yeah, US has become quite deportation happy
But yeah, coming back to hardware, the tarifs for now is 20% which is how it was
Who knows, next week it might jump back to 420% after Elon's request xD
No worries. With GPMI, if it takes root, it will attract more tariff.
GIMP? The image editor?
Ooooh that
Two of these can power a 5090 safely
And steal all your private || p0rn || data.
And all your ||furry fanfiction|| data generated by AI
Been obsessively checking the cable for a few days now since I got the 5090 lol
So far at 500+W haven't seen anything concerning, just mildly warm to the touch as expected
Stay safe! Happy rendering!
did you check the temps on touch of the 6 power wires? if there is something wrong, one wire will be way warmer than the others
Yeah, they are all roughly the same
Probably gonna keep checking it for a while lol
I don't have anything to measure it with, so going purely by how they feel to the touch but I should be able to feel the difference if there was any
yeah, derbaur was able to easily tell buy the touch when wires went way above what they were supposed to, so that's smart, just keep in mind your body will get used to heat
people like BM are the reason nvidia gets away with their pricing...
If amd decided to wake up and offer close to equivalent performance to best nvidia's offerings at a reasonable price it wouldn't be the case 😅
I had amd cards before where they were able to compete with nvidia's best cards
7900xtx when it hit 800 dollars was a very good card if you don't care about ai
I don't think AMD make or sells enough cards to impact the market at this point. They'd be sold out and nvidia would still be expensive.
theyve sold a lot of cards this gen relative to nvidia i believe
remember that AMD had almost 2 month buffer in stock availability when they postponed the launch last minute, and they still sold out
while nvidia sent whole 5 units of each card to major retailers
and mobile launch was just as bad, people are actively avoiding to buy 50-series laptops
also doesnt help that nvidia cards are coated in controversy rn with hardware defects
they are making the 5070 available despite the low stock by simply making everyone buy a 9070xt or 9070 instead because of way better prices
UK has dropped prices below msrp
I wonder who wouldn't want a 4090 level performance, all thanks the power of AI
With booty native performance
Tenno!
Speaking of GPU, while messing around with drivers on Linux I ended up using integrated graphics of 6th gen intel quad core i7 to run warframe
It somehow runs
On the open world map
Is that a testament to the hardware or the software?
Both, Warframe is supposed to be quite the beautiful game, yet it can run on such old hardware, it is honestly impressive
Now for doom benchmarks
Doom uses some pretty good Vulkan Rendering, unlike Warframe which uses direct x11 / x12
And also, Warframe uses a custom unreal engine version
Like halo mcc?
Warframe has been around for ages, probably since 2010, since the official release date is 2013.
I remember playing the original and then again after four years or so.
It's one of the most optimised games on the market right now.
I bet the Warframe developers know more about Unreal Engine than Epic. 😄
They cooked up their own lumen, and it is quite solid stuff
Yes. We must raid their base of operations and steal their secret cultivation manuals for spiritual developers.
Steven would never be okay with that!
he isnt, or?

He should turn her into jewellery!
And he said "Damn", not "No!"
He's not okay with it, but he's accepting of it.
this sounds like some dark spin-off!
yes, thats right
Well he did need a distraction
Tarrifs not even gonna affect the bottom line of some companies tbh. The markup is insane.
Why do people ignore first party benchmarks? The manufacturers can't lie about the products because people will find out about the true performance anyways, so they are surely close to reality!
Meanwhile the first party benchmarks:
RTX 5060 Ti review embargo lifts tomorrow... and unfortunately that also appears to be the release date. And it looks like 8GB model reviews may be hard to come by. Anyway, here is my thoughts on the entire Nvidia 5060 Ti slide deck from Nvidia.

Disappointment bulletin board
here's what i think will happen
it launches at the price of the 9070
and the 9070 will absolutely destroy the 5060
https://youtu.be/0el5OwAKB28?si=rSTWAucYT1LBf1-h&t=1747 the end of this video is gold 😄
The RTX 5060Ti is here and is available in 8GB and 16GB... but you should NEVER buy the 8GB model... Oh, and the 5060Ti 16GB should be $50 cheaper.

@frozen hatch, moving the discussion here since we're talking specifically about M3 hardware.
I run the M3 at its default resolution, which I think is maybe 5K?
It's the Apple "Retina" whatever that means.
On basic projects I'm getting like 60-100 fps
I haven't done extensive hardware profiling, I can't really compare it apples-to-apples with other hardware.
I can tell you the SSD is a little slower than my PCIe NVMe drives I ordinarily use, but it's not painfully slow.
CPU-wise it has been fine to work on.
60-100fps on 5k resolution? I wonder how much would you get with 1080p can you maybe test that?
Maybe? But not today, I have meetings starting soon that will last a few hours 😢
Generally I never drop the resolution below native.
Yes, and you shouldnt, im just trying to compare what dedicated gpu would that chip equate to
also, is the m3's igpu different than the current m4's?
Not sure, but I imagine probably so?
@median marsh omg that name xD
Well. The 5060 and 5060Ti GPUs are here... So how do they compare to previous generations of 60Ti GPUs?

5060ti 16gb seems like the only one even remotely worth buying
i have to wonder if itll have better performance than the 5070 in a number of titles due to the increased memory?
Already the case with the 4070...4070ti and 4070 super
Doesn't matter how fast it computes if you are in a memory bound senario
It seems 12GB is the new 8GB now, but worse.

Yeah, they stopped a long while ago, but because it was overpriced, there was a tone of stock
overpriced?!?! relative to the 7900XT or relative to nvidia?!
It was like 950$ or smth, and people were meh, imma wait for Nvidia 50 series and the 9070 stuff
The 7800xt sold way better than 7900xt and 7900xtx because at those price ranges, you'd get a 4070 ti super or 4080 super with a little extra

Isnt that a quadro card
Instead quadro card render only?
that's what it had. 5000 Ada if that helps? And ya it's not cheap. 6k CAD
expensive as fuck but it's good
6k CAD is quite cheap for that sort of laptop
Just don't buy it for gaming 😂

Acer has introduced the Nitro 20, a Strix APU based desktop.

Does anyone here have a base m4 mac mini?
that bad huh?
it won't be bad for gaming
i wouldn't really advise getting a quadro though unless you need the extra memory or signed drivers
warframe was even running on mt laptop with i3-2310 and nvidia 5xx card with 2gb memory, 30 fps anywhere other than open world
it got super optimized when they were making handheld console port
it's also like a decade old
can run with low graphics and it's basically how it was years ago
Dont know ifnits a quadro. Says nvidia rtx 5000 ada generation 16gb gddr6
Google says quadro
it definitely isnt geforce
they abandoned the quadro name i think and just call them rtx
It is a pcie 3.0 x16 to give you an idea of how old it is
strange. Why would they put such an old card in a brand new laptop?
unless i'm not understanding things.
Sadly that's the only one ive found that offers that amount of ran, that amount of vram, and onsite support internationally (that part's just as important as the specs)
jesus. id' hate to see what the price would be
Pny quadro?
You can still find some quadros on the market just labeled differently.
i wonder what laptops you could get hat 32gb card in.
Very expensive ones

don't think less of it, if you want to render things, it'll be incredibly optimised and powerful while also being incredibly efficient...Until you use it for gaming
ya that's half of what i'd need it for, so hence the concern 😄
plus 16gb is 2k in a laptop so
lenovo anyways
there isn't a lot of options for high end laptops it seems
@delicate crystal ummm okay, which games do you play
It was more i was looking to do some open world dev in unreal, and i wanted this to be viabld for at least five years. I also do some serious ai and kubenerntes work in my dau job so hence the high end specs
should be fine for the job, as long as it is not latency sensitive tasks, it'll handle it with insane efficiency

The reason for the changes is put forward by Synology as a result of the success of its High-Performance series of drives. It's claimed that this will grant "the highest levels of security and performance, while also offering significantly more efficient support."
If they find it's more efficient to not support third party hardware, it's only a matter of time before they find it's more efficient to not support their own, older hardware.
Theyll probably wonder why theyre losing sales by next year.

Is this user benchmark fellow some sort of internet scourge, who exists in all things everywhere and at all times? 😄
The thing with YouTube and other hardware article sites is that you'd get a large variety of opinions
Sure YouTubers would mostly focus on gaming, and sometimes doing benchmarks for questionable games like star wars outlaws
But generally if you have a a brain...and know what you want to use the hardware part for, you can look at specific benchmarks in the reviews instead of just ya yeetting the whole thing...
But by far the funniest part of this comment is him kinda admiting the ultra core series is not worth upgrading if you have 12th gen
That's like saying if you are using zen2, it isn't worth upgrading to zen5
Oh, I get what he's doing. Just, who is he?
I've read some of you mention 'user benchmark' before.
Was he a troll or something?
https://userbenchmark.com is a VERY intel-biased, VERY restrictive benchmark system
User benchmark is a true benchmarking website that offer true benchmarks unlike the YouTubers that have been payed by Advanced Marketing Department
OH.
I see.
I know the website.
I thought this was a troller of some kind.
Thank you. 🙂
Nah nah, it is a super serious service, even the benchmarking tool is the peak of benchmarks, offering to benchmark the whole pc
Yeah. I do find the site a bit cumbersome. Although I think I've only ever used direct links to GPU comparisons there.
Thank you, mods. 🙂

Hello. I'm curious about your opinions.
I'm thinking about increasing my skills while using the 2070 super I have or buying 5070ti..
What choice do you think you'd make?
My CPU is 9950x.
Do not buy a 5070ti, horrible price per value, Nvidia’s been fucking over consumers lately
A 2070 is plenty to get you going
Np
Depends on where you are in the world, some countries get way more screwed than others
But even then you can do a lot with a 2070 super
What do you intend to do with it? Small project, big project, learning unreal engine, etc?
small project and learning ! but I'm planning to go to advanced level.
I want to try many different things.
Oh, then it is perfect, when I was learning I was using an Nvidia 960m (still using it for advanced projects funny enough) and it worked quite well, anything that would drop the FPS would indicate I needed to optimise something, so I used various engine tools to determine what it was, also learned the weight of some features and whether or not they are required etc
Thank you ! I will build it up step by step from the basics.
GPU market is pretty terrible and almost everything is way higher than it should be
5070ti isn't great value (no card is lol) but it's not like there's anything else at that price? the 9070xt was meant to be way cheaper but I usually see 9070xts retail for higher than 5070tis which is just stupid when the 5070ti is a better card
If you eally encounter a hardware limit with your 2070 (vram limit will probably suck after a while) you can always just upgrade later
Thank you! I guess it was a good idea to ask.

anyone here know jack about monitors?
buying a 4k240hz oled and wondering if its worth spending extra to get a monitor with display port 2.1 over hdmi 2.1
You need a DP port for higher refresh rates. With HDMI ports, there are limitations.
Exact data is available on the monitor's specifications sheet.
Pretty much.
Always read the spec sheet for your monitor and the reddit experiences before buying one.
With the latter, you get to understand what cooling solutions and troubleshooting steps you MIGHT have to take in the future, among other things.
This is good to, https://i.imgur.com/pSThnuF.png
I understand that dp 2.1 is "better" but I don't really know how
is the display compression actually noticeable?
Certain refresh rate thresholds are more noticable than others
Higher is better
Most people likely won't notice without something to compare to
or if they had something really poor in comparison
the refresh rate is high. my only concern is display stream compression
i hear people saying it's visually lossless. any other annoying things about it?
I currently don't have anything running 2.1 so can't speak on that part sorry.
I'm still pretty dated on monitor side
yeah I'm going from a 13 year old 1080p TN panel to a 4k240 oled
It basically said it adds about 0.5 ms of latency anyways
I know you said no, but if that's true its negligible.
Display port is more of an open standard where as hdmi is something you gotta get a license for
Which is why hardware manufacturers would love to favour display port over hdmi
And somehow, with their latest stuff they beat hdmi, so they gotta get good otherwise hdmi will get forgotten
HDMI is probably going to get retired, especially if the Chinese successfully export their GPMI/GDMI cable.
Of course, if that cable causes 🔥 , it's a different story.
the red dragon flames
Btw, apparently some 50 series models have very elevated backplate temps, like the printed circuit gets around 70-100°C, potentially yet another screw up
And it isnt even close to the power connector
🤦
You'd think companies would figure out that it's a better idea to manufacture FEWER models and get the details right.
THAT would probably bring the model costs down AND prevent replacements and recalls.
So glad I skipped this generation
You see, the engineers at Nvidia which do the most autistic active load distribution (for reference AMD uses passive load balancing) in order to make their board so absurdly complicated that only they know wtf is going on so that they cannot get replaced, because no engineer fresh out of school would be able to handle the autism that is whatever they did
What you meant is that they are so adroit at their jobs, that their genius cannot be comprehended by plebians.
Yes, and their genius causes anyone who wants to repair their cards to have the worse time of their lifes
This makes sense, since all genius involves a great toil and trouble.

What a great site
I got a really good flexibile pcie 4 x16 cable from one of those, let me remember the name
alibaba
Nah
PCIe x16 to x16 adapter for graphics video cards turn right/left extension gen4
😮
I was kinda surprised when I received it because I half expected it to be a scam,
How stiff is it?
Bro it is flexible AF
Any noticable latency?
No, not really, usual x16 pcie cable
I am quite scared of bending near the origin of the cable though, because there is a lot of smaller wires, bending any one of them could be problematic
But anything after that is easy
Just don't bend the cable constantly like any cable
Yeah don't want to strain
Funny enough Windus showed me their stuff on Ali express and I was like oh cool, but also it is Ali express, so I found their own website instead xD
And they have way way more different combinations and offerings of cables
Yeah Aliexpress is hit/ miss
I prefer alibaba
Usually a bit "higher" quality
Not quite high
But decent
I just do research on the seller before buying, no matter the platform
Interesting, the 9060 with 8gb might be phased out really quickly by looking at how much reviewers trash on the 5060ti 8gb
Bad yields saved for a 9050 8gb wouldn't be so bad tbh, slap a 200$ price on it and it becomes quite attractive
China exclusive.
Who is this Windus person? 👀
I am not sure I understand the benefits of this entirely, but I think AMD is moving towards making its drivers and software opensource.
Moving next week
yea, I'm pretty sure they planned to make ROCm and a whole bunch of others open source
What's the benefit though?
Are they doing a Bethesda and getting modders to fix their drivers or something?
Then they can be like Linux and argue about what programming languages to include and or use.

No, it has Sudoku, Chess, Minesweeper and many others.

Fun times. You'd assume they'd streamline the drivers after awhile, or at least refine one or two driver releases to resolve these issues, but.....
It's just bloatware. Of course it's going to get bad.
I'm getting a new laptop shortly. I may stick a copy of w10 '21 iot on it. See how it does.
I doubt anyone'd notice, actually. The video talks about 600-700 FPS. Do you actually see that? I can understand differences between 30 and 60, but above that, I doubt the mk1 human eye experiences anything different.
I mean, I'd also just like to not have cortana and copilot hamfisted into the ui.
Reduced telemetry, etc.
Sure. I bet 'people don't notice' is part of the reason they never bother to refine the software.
Yeah, people can argue numbers, but NVidia can always shrug and say, "Show me you play better at 600 FPS."
What if you've got a shitty gfx card/cpu and you're actually got the difference between 30 and 60 fps?
NOW, things MIGHT change once brain chips become a thing and HumAI start competing professionally.
Then you get Todded.
God Todd, "Starfield is optimised. Get a new PC."
They're also rich though, and can sell remakes that are janky and earn hundreds of millions of dullars!

Sometimes on a 9070xt they perform better, sometimes they perform worse
Very inconvenient meaning they could be driver issues, because all the windows versions tested are enterprise so they don't have ads
is there an sdk for it?
would be cute to make something on an ereader psp
No idea.
If the sdk exists, it's probably in Chinese.

Hello, actually I wanted to ask currently which laptop is best for handling Unreal Engine 5? (I already have Alienware 32 GB RAM, RTX 4070) but UE5 often crashes on it. Any suggestions?
Likely software issue, what is your CPU, RAM, GPU, VRAM usage before crashing?
Alienware M16 R1 model Intel i9 13th gen (13900k), 32 GB RAM, RTX 4070 8GB
I never checked but it takes a lot only I suppose
How long have you used this computer?
Oct, 2023 brought.
well it may be a software problem, it may be a hardware problem, it can be both, man what could go wrong with a 13900k
out of curiosity, is your warranty still valid?
No
That only. Dunno what is happening
The 13th and 14th high end models were known for having excessive voltages and power draw, and turns out, they couldn't handle it in the long term, making them degrade faster than normal, essentially they were high failure parts compared to the 12th gen
One of the symptoms of that is frequent Unreal Engine crashes
But it might be unrelated to your case, and worse case scenario, you could apply some settings to reduce power draw and voltage values if that's the case, but hopefully it isn't
@undone laurel you could try: (A) update BIOS; (B) disable any/all overclocking configs you or Dell may have created in the BIOS (After update, Reset to Factory Default BIOS).
I think it's related only like whenever I play any game also.....the lag.... I can't describe...like while using UE5 and for playing games..... something always feels non optimised. Like intel or nvidia .... it's either of them not working well with each other or something
Already did that. This instance I am telling after doing all these things only
Do you get crashes while playing ue 5 games?
Like while developing itself, laptop will hang, Unreal Engine will crash..... repeat run sometimes
In starting it will be smooth but as soon as I try filling scene with assets or foliage , it will crash badly
Well you can play unreal engine 5 games like Fortnite for a few hours and if you get a "out of memory" or "out of Vram " error then the culprit is the CPU
But if you don't, then it is likely a fixable software issue
that laptop is more than capable
probably some power savings bs
@undone laurel Go into your Power Options / Power Plan, and select High Performance. If that option isn't available, create a Custom Power Plan and set all the settings to Maximum, downtime to zero (for hard drives and PCIe), etc. etc.
Then, try your usual software and see if it crashes.
Also, set the auto-sleep, auto-display switch-off, auto-hibernate, etc. to NEVER for on-power and on-battery.
If you have any MSI software on that laptop, disable it while using UE.
With these settings, try running the UE 5 engine/games with the laptop plugged-in AND on-battery (not plugged-in). Let us know if it crashes.
how does a RTX 3080Ti comapre to a 7900 XTX?
depends on the workload, what do you have in mind? UE and gaming? With or without rt / AI things
because in raw performance, the 7900 xtx beats the 3080 ti by quite the margin, like 10-30%
ya that' what I figured.
So was asking as I was pricing out upgrades (64 to 128gb ram, 256gb to 4tb hard drive, 8gb 1070 ti to 7900 XTX), and found a system that would give me most of those upgrades, plus upgrading the process from a threadripper 1920 to a 3970X, but had a 3080Ti vid card, for roughly the same price as the initial upgrade price
if it is about 700-750$ for the 3080ti it is quite the good deal

What happens when you connect a Fire Truck to a PC water cooling loop?...
quickly reach the limit of the thermal conductivity of water lol
Well its 1600 for tge whole system so theres that. If it goes through probavly look at selling tge 3080ti and getting tge 7900 xtx
yeah 7900xtx is a lot better
since youll have the 3080ti tho you can always determine if its sufficient for your needs
I have played Fortnite before, but didn't come across this error but when I try some other heavy games like COD, the lag is prominent and heavy work on UE5 also the same, it will crash
I will try this and let you know
Still if you guys had any suggestions on better laptops that would be great. Meanwhile I will try fixing the Alienware issue
Is this normal?
That's 84C and quite high.
If you have a blower handy, then blow the dust out of the laptop through its vents.
Blow it out from all sides and then check the temps.
If that doesn't lower the temperatures substantially, then the thermal paste has probably worn out and needs to be changed.
How old is this device, by the way?
Since it is set to high performance, you could try the other way and set it to power save
Because looks like the CPU and GPU are likely thermal throttle themselves in order to avoid death
He said Oct 2023
2023? If he hasn't cleaned the laptop, then it's probably clogged.
The laptop's shutting down to avoid burnout, most probably.
Yup
Chinese blower ftw! ✊
Reverse those attachments and you have a very unwieldy, but useful vacuum cleaner. 😄
Have you used it before?
Yes. I've had it for several years now.
As good as the day I bought it.
However, when you reverse the attachments, you kind of have to keep hold of the dust pouch when it's on the blower hole, because at least in mine, it doesn't fit securely, so there's a chance a high blow setting will blast the pouch out of the blower. 😄
Lol
that's a really good laptop and I don't know why you'd upgrade if it's only like a year old
if you do anything, buy a desktop
I'm not discarding Alienware, it will be my primary only, just looking for another better laptop.
This is after turning off high performance mode
Alright
Yeah, those are high CPU temps.
Hopefully, blowing the dust out of your laptop will make things better.
Otherwise, you'll have to open it up and change the thermal paste.
it's good to check up front before opening laptops nowdays, many higher end models come with liquid metal as default
if you want gaming laptop to run cooler just reduce the CPU max power down to like 65W
you don't lose any performance but it doesn't try to draw 100W every time windows telemetry sneezes in the background
Will just go to service centre to get it right
Also please tell this
Anything above it would be high end enterprise laptops
Honestly you are set for at least 5 more years if you manage to keep the temps to an acceptable degree
Have you tried setting the power profile to "balanced"?
It depends on the CPU, for something like 9950x, even 92C is perfectly normal under full load, because it boosts as much as it can, so no matter what you throw at it, it will reach high temps
the 9950x has moved the temp sensors, so add like 7°C and it would be the displayed temps from zen4
Hello guys !
What do you recommend me for cooling my CPU (i7 or i9), air cooler or water cooler ?
I read that water cooling can have a lot of failure compared to air cooling.. any advices ?
I'm using many big softwares like Maya / Zbrush / Substances / UE5 etc.. so I need something that can cool my CPU very well and if possible avoid too loud noise
i7/i9 cooling requirements are very different
and what CPU would it be?
water-cooling isn't unreliable but it definitely can fail way sooner than a air cooler can (which is basically never)
The i7-11700KF CPU
My PC actually have a water cooling but after 1 year my CPU is getting hotter and hotter each day..
air cooler, use a thermalright peerless assassin 120 evo
i doubt it's an issue with the cooler
you can take the block off of your CPU and repaste it
will likely only cost a few dollars and will make it like new
what's the cooler?
When I boot my PC I got a message "CPU overheating, please check your water cooling is firmly attached"
oh they can... had a gpu die like that most likely
that's rare though. water coolers aren't even rated for use past like 6 years
didn't knew that before, why is that?
it's a "MAG CORELIQUID 120R"
pump failures usually
if you never moved the cooler and it randomly got hot slowly, it is possible the AIO got filled due to a factory issue
yea, i was never a fan of the pumps on the actual cpu which pretty much every AIO does
Yes I already sent it back to constructor and they told me they have replaced my AIO cause the old one had factory issue, but now I got the same issue.. and I'm tired to send it back to constructor every time
do you hear the pump turn on when you start your PC? Does the radiator fan work?
check if it is installed properly and check thermal paste, if it still doesn't work, another constructor issue
Yes the fans work and I hear the pump, I also feel like mini vibrations when I touch the pump
that's also a pretty small aio though for an i7 it's probably fine
agree
when you remove the bit attached to your CPU, the top of the CPU should be fully covered in a goop
if it isn't, then whoever built your PC didn't attach the cooler right
So maybe the issue is not the cooler ?
could be, but first check how it is installed
Because when I'm in idle state, only on the Desktop, my PC makes a lot of noise (due to fans) and my CPU temp is at 70°C
But it only happened after 1 year, first year it was "ok"
So I have to remove the pump over my CPU to check the thermal paste ?
that is some really bad paste if it went that bad after just a year
only if you are comfortable with it
2-3 years, longer for better pastes
Do you have recommendations of good pastes ?
thermal grizzly duronaught
(I was thinking about buying a new AIO cooler from Corsair, but I'm wondering if it's better to just use Air Cooler..)
but make sure it is well installed, because if you remove it, you'll have to clear the thermal paste, even if you just applied it
So I have to buy the thermal paste grizzly before removing it
Because if I remove the pump to check the thermal paste, I will have to clean it
yeah, but a tube of 1g should be enough for 2 pastes
On Amazon I saw "Thermal Grizzly Duronaut – 6 g" for 20$
thermal grizzly expensive as shit
Have you checked that the radiator isn't clogged with dust
likely wouldn't affect first start temps at desktop
arctic makes relatively inexpensive paste
But I want something quality and that can last in a long time
Yes I removed all of the dust
if you want long lasting, don't go with AIO, because more elements can fail, where as, if an air cooler fails, it is usually just the fans, and they can be swapped without removing it, plus with the cpu you have, it'll be fine
So why some will use Water cooling ? For which case ?
Hmm
Asking because the side underneath the fans (if the fans are pulling through the radiator) likes to clogged
they use water cooling because it is just better than air cooler, offers way lower temps, but their weakness is price to performance and also not as long lasting as just a big metal thing with fans
Because my PC is an already built PC from MSI, and it had this AIO inside it by default..
well, at least it is not expensive AIO at all xD
thermalright phantom spirit 120 evo is really good for its price, and if you don't like rgb, you can go for a black version
I never used water cooling, it's my first attempt to use it, but I don't have really goof experiences with that since it had a lot of failure..
at least most failure don't lead to leaks, and if they do, they have non conductive liquid, so it is fine if your components get wet from it
Does it make lot of noise or is quite silent ?
you'll barely hear it
At least yes, you're right, but I'm tired of seeing my PC getting hotter month after month until it stops working and I have to send it back to MSI for changing the water cooling pump..
I already did it 2 times so now I'm thinking about just install another cooler myself
yeah, it sounds like either the thermal paste is failing or the pump is getting clogged
Each time I sent it back, they told me that the pump had an issue and they changed it..
lmao
So the Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 EVO or some Corsair ? Which brand is the best for cooling ?
thermalright is known for having very good price to performance
(That's why I'm tired of water cooling, too much issues..)
I don't have problem with price, I just want performance
Noctua NH D15 G2, is what the best air can reach
Noctua is known for high price and high quality
absolute overkill for a i7 lol
ikr xD
So with the Noctua NH D15 G2 I can run the most powerful CPU existing with low temp and low noise ? I don't need water cooling for the most powerful CPU ?
basically
So I really don't understand the use of Water cooling as they have too much failures
but is overkill in your case and has worse price to peformance
Yes but it will last minimum 5 years, right ? And it's 150$. So 150$ for 5 years is worth it I guess
normally they don't fail so often, your pc's aio was probably among the cheapest so it makes sense it failed so much
And the people who got very powerful PC / Workstation, do you think they use AIO or Air cooling ?
for this one, you'll have it for 8 years minimum, the company offers free hardware adapters to make it be placed on future motherboards
And also comes with one of the best thermal paste for free
either AIO or custom water loop
only very few would actually use air coolers
because some workstations have over 64 cores running very hot, so the insane amount of heat generated can only be handled with water cooling
YEAHHHHHH
I realized a few days ago that I can actually slap on a third fan there. 😄
ikr! that's so cool
Thank you so much for your advices !
So after all of that, what do you recommend me ? Quality Water cooling or basic air cooling ? I'd really love have very low temp and very low noise
So maybe water cooling from Corsair.. what do you think ?
Quality air cooling.
if you really want extreme quiet, go noctua
I have eight fans in my Fractal Torrent and the only noise I hear is the USB fan cooling my monitor OUTSIDE it.
what's the biggest aio you could fit?
You mean budget ?
I guess my case can have 120, because it's the size of my actual water cooling
yea that's the smallest one, fits even in my pocket...
you would probably want at least a 240, better 360 one
that's some big pockets, can I have the same xD
so check your cases data sheet
That's why his computer is hot.
His AIO is cooling your pocket. 😛
gotta cool deez nutz
twue.
I have to change my case or can I set a 240 in my actual case ?
What case do you have?
you should know
if the biggest it'll fit is a 120, don't bother with buying a new aio
you will get better performance out of a air cooler
having a good case with good ventilation will be very good for temps of all components
(assuming you can fit a big dual tower)
i would go for air anyways
My PC is MSI MAG Codex X5 11TE
I don't have the size of my AIO or case in the description
idk how hot these i7's get, but my 5950x is fine with air and it's rare that it really has to use all cores to get to a point where i hear the fan. just get sure that the heat get's out of the case
Classic or Luxury?
Classic
But it does not tell me if I can buy a 240 or not
if you can barely fit the AIO you have into the case (focusing on lengh) then it can't fit anything above that
120 stands for 120mm which is like 1 fan, 240mm is 2 fans, 360 is 3 fans
So if I can't fit a 240mm, it's not worth it to buy a 120 AIO
My AIO is only 1 fan
I have 2 fans on the top but not linked to my AIO/CPU
Your case is ever-so-slightly smaller than my fractal torrent.
they are for small form factor, they are not worth investing into if you aren't using a compact or budget build
It's a mid-tower ATX.
You can fit a 240 liquid cooler in there, or a dual-tower air cooler.
the question is if it has proper mounts for it
Fractal Torrent - 544 x 242 x 530 mm
MSI MAG Codex X5 11th - 195 x 514.8 x 466 (mm)
just because your case wasn't designed by an idiot, doesn't mean that all cases are 😄
He can fit a dual tower air cooler though.
And that'll be more than enough for his CPU.
AND MSI itself has a tech support for that CPU for a 240 AIO.
So, I think it can.
Dual tower air cooler or a Noctua NH-D15 G2 ?
@short bramble what GPU do you have and is it getting warm?
the noctua is a dual tower air cooler
I was about to say.....
RTX 3080 and in idle it's 56°C and while working it's 80°C
yeah, consider getting a better case
Oh ok sorry lol
It's hot for a GPU ?
yeah xD
I think it's not normal to have 56°C in idle
yup
it is not at dangerous levels, but not ideal
Even if it was build my MSI, I can change the case relatively easy ?
Actually... Lab's right, I think.
I am looking at pics of this case, and it isn't built for fan cooling.
Do you have some good cases recommendation ?
I am a loyal fan of Fractal cases, now.
I myself have Fractal Torrent.
Their customer support is AWESOME!
Ok thank you, and I need a big Fractal case
you'd have to disassemble most of the computer, so only do it if you are comfortable with it
Yes I already built many PC's from scratch
perfect
this case wasn't build of cooling period xD
where the fuck does the air come from
@median marsh You're right about idiots designing cases.
See that space next to the glass panel? That tiny space?
So to resume, I need : Thermal Grizzly Duronaut
Noctua NH-D15
Fractal case (big)
you mean the massive air intake?
Yes the cool design is very very bad..
god you don't need a new case
but my case isn't better either in that regard
the case is something personal, I'd reccomend doing research about the designs you like, lian li makes some really good cases too
it's an old CPU, don't rebuild the whole thing just for a cooler lol
I don't really care with design, I only want performance
Ok so I don't need a new case, so just thermal paste and Noctua ?
you have an i7, you can slap any cooler on there that isn't low profile and it'll be fine
thermaltake cte c750 is my personal favourite, complete overkill, and probably too big, but I like having space (it can even fit workstation computers in there xD )
But it's better to buy the Noctua if I'm planning to buy a more powerful CPU after ?
Noctua is good. Thermal Assassin is good. There are many good options.
if you plan on getting a better CPU like an i9 or Ryzen 9 I would just buy a aio at that point
noctua is overprized
^
get a "clone"
But I'm very afraid of the AIO because of failures.. Air coolers seem more stable
thermaltake makes them, bequiet (also they are almost at noctua price range), and however silentiumpc Endorfy
🤷 In your case, they seem very unstable.
they are arguably insufficient for modern i9
I'm going to guess that the aio is mounted somewhere that's causing the pump to die
in your case, budget wise it would be good to use thermalright (also the cooler has a pretty good thermal paste for free) and a lian li, fractal or thermaltake for 100-150$
yeah whatever cooler you buy will come with paste
You can then slap three fans to the top and one fan to the back of the case, to suck hot air out.
Although given the position of the GPU in that case, I wonder how much of that air will reach it.
Anyhooo, it should be better than the temps now with a failing water cooler.
Yes I guess everything will be better than what I actually have for sure x)
But Lab told me to have a new case for my GPU temp
oh yeah, for sure, shitty AIO with shitty design case
54°C idle GPU temps aren't normal imo
Yeah. 34-36C on idle here.
Almost. The AIO is linked to the other fan which is alone
Oops. I lied. 33C.
that's a 20°C difference from a different case
You think my GPU temp is just the case ?
he... i got 53 with barely load, too 😄
and with high load?
So recommendation for Fractal case ?
i think around 75-80
Cool...
From me, most certainly.
Awesome sauce company.
I really need performance, low temp, low noise, last long
Well, first, change to the noctua air cooler and fans.
See if that makes a significant difference, before changing the case.
That way, you spend less.
But the case is for the GPU also
how are we at noctua again? 😄
I guess the Noctua will not impact my GPU temp
Okay, fine. Ben Air cooler. Happy? 😛
they are the peak for air cooling after all xD
Yes and 150$ for 8 years is really worth it lol
Worry about the GPU later.
Let's see how the air cooler AND other fans work together.
Ok so :Thermal Grizzly Duronaut
Noctua NH-D15
And I remove my AIO, I throw it, and I install my Noctua instead of that
you don't even need the thermal grizzly right away because the noctua comes with one the best thermal pastes
Remove the AIO. Yes. Don't throw it in the garbage. You might need it to cool a hamster on an electricity generating wheel.
Hahah
I'm really traumatized with AIOs x)
But for now I will use Noctua as Air cooler seem very stable
Noctua NH-D15 G2 that G2 is quite important
there are 3 versions, get the standard
yup
And the size is good ?
Your case is 195mm.
Noctua is 168mm.
make sure it has mounting hardware for your cpu
It'll fit.
it might not clear your ram
also
just plugged in a 5080
i thought the 12vhpwr complaints were just redditors failing to plug a cable in
no
no no no
the cable is a troll
If it doesn't clear your RAM, you have to mount the fan next to the RAM slightly HIGHER than the other fans, to provide clearance.
thats a crazy amoun to spend on an air cooler
and thats coming from someone who owns one
It won't clear my RAM ? What do you mean ?
the cooler is a massive block of aluminum
it sometimes isnt high enough to not hit your memory and be uninstallable
So if it does not fit my case and touch my ram.. I have to buy another case?
