I purchased a material pack on the marketplace and all the textures/materials appear to be present in the BP editor/content browser, but when I apply the material to any geometry or static mesh, the icon switches to the default grey checker and the material never appears on my object... what am I doing wrong here?

marketplace is still very broken with that issue where similar priced items will get shuffled into next pages...
its noticeable without any filter, but especially noticeable if you apply a filter like highest discount (so 50% for example) an item with 50% discount will display multiple times on multiple pages, meaning some poor item did not get displayed ... so what was programmed to bring fairness (shuffling items) is actually harming products from never being seen...
and also frustrating users (me) when i see the same item on multiple different pages i cant help but think im wasting my time
for example that cargo ship was on page 1, and im on 9 and there it is again

Just a thought but I think it would be nice to have a VR focused inventory / crafting system. There's nothing really suitable in the marketplace and I had the idea after seeing several VR devs asking about inventory systems.
Example Use:
The player finds some firewood and a lighter, later pulls them out of inventory and crafts them together to make a fire. Then pull out a fish from inventory and cook it on the fire.
I'm currently trying to convince W3 studios it's a good idea. ๐

The complexity of that seems pretty insane (though, I guess it could be implemented as a generic item "do-er"), but it does sound like a really awesome idea if executed properly
I am however I'm also not so experienced, I prefer to focus more on level design / story. If I can pay a dev to save on time I will, that's how the marketplace works ๐
@zealous ibex Yeah something really generic along the lines of object A and object B overlap and trigger an event. It doesn't have to be inserting parts together or anything, I don't see it being any more complex than other inventory systems out there.

Better if you define that clearly. You could pay me $160 and I'll give you a copy of my plugin. You could also pay someone to remake that and they'll ask, let's say, $5.000. There is no third option, but from your phrasing, it sounds like you're looking for one, one along the lines of: you pay $160 for me to make a product for myself just so you can buy it for cheap. That's not how the marketplace works.
Without that specific clarification, your request isn't special. The forums are filled with "I am an expert, but for whatever reason, I don't want to do this". From a certain point forward, it's not worth investigating such request to filter out the lazy and selfish people and keep the honest and well-intended ones.
To be clear: I am not bashing your request. I am strictly picking on the "I am trying to conving W3 to do it" part.

I want to make a (small scale) single player FPS akin to half life. Nothing big or professional, just a hobbyist project. And yes, for a DediServer you would download the Source version of your engine version from GitHub

I've gotten about 40 ratings on my free pack in the last two months it's been free (I think I had about 20 ratings prior to that, though I can't remember...and that was after 4 years)
it's been "purchased" for free about 25k times :/
although I guess I should feel lucky that out of those 25k, a few didn't decide to 1 star me
To be fair, I'd imagine a lot of the 25k just grabbed it and then didn't even look at it

you can filter for the tag "permanent collection"...seems like a lot of work just to find them, though...or you can click on the free tab and navigate past all of Epics stuff
it doesn't all show up in free tab. couldn't get the tag working, you can only filter a tag on a search, it doesn't autocomplete "permanent collection" so you can't add it, "permanent"/"free"/every other combination doesn't show anything of any value.

I'm considering making some procedural city architecture for the marketplace. Any general advice(or requests) while I check out the guidelines? I've not sold on the marketplace before.
Perhaps just modular, semi-scifi city buildings?
No fancy textures or designs, but more like advanced geometry peices
My current idea is to create each building block in 3 stages. The ground flood (detailed), the second (semi) and third+ (basic cubes).
The building blocks will the extend horizontally to create alleyways, city store fronts, etc. I would also add slight details to each side of the bottom geometry so lots of variation. Also yes relatively generic urban /cyberpunk scifi stuff

@tame wasp make standard and consistent pieces/sizes, maybe look at requirements of plugins like dungeon architect and think about how those packages procedurally assemble levels

Found I really good looking perlin noise generator tool in the marketplace that I really want but its been dropped support wise a few builds. I'm trying to understand how to implement noise to drive terrains or meshes. Is it all implemented through material or can it be done in BPs?
Is it ever okay to buy video game assets as long as you tweak them around/make the most important ones yourself?
I ask because people who use assets are often criticized for it
Our plugin (Windows Platform) is compiling successfully on our end (4.20.2) installed from Epic games Launcher but this plugin is failing to build at Epics end. We have attached a report from the marketplace team. Anybody have any idea why this is failing to build at Epics end?

Errors like these usually hint towards missing includes.
They can work on your end because you might have setup PCH stuff

Models don't have to be made for UE4. If you find a good one that has the proper filetype (and license) then you can most likely import it.

I tend to use certain noise textures for each thing I make, and if I install my own packs sometimes you see the same texture 4-5 times

So I can strip it apart and move it into the project
And then delete all the rest

I've tried countless ways to scale down the vegetations (the grass and fern, flowers) sizes... but nothing I do works.

@ebon leaf Are you trying to scale down vegetation you have placed or the vegetation in one of their sample maps?

@tawny minnow So I tried scaling down the grass foliage mesh in the foliage browser, before and after painting the foliage on the map, but it doesn't work. In the content browser, there's a parameter that says Editable Mesh: None, and maybe that's why the foliage isn't changing? I'm not really sure. I tried changing it but it seems to be unchangable.
I'm not sure how to change that setting, as I'm not completely knowledgeable in that area.

@tawny minnow Also, just to try, I painted the meshes on the map, and tried to rebuild the lighting, and somethings wrong with it. It stays at 0%, and the map size is only about 15 x the size of the starter content flooring. But build lighting when using the content regurlarly (using the materials), works fine. So this is another issue.

also, user can set resolution themselves, so only providing i.e. a 2k one, and explain they can set it to 512 or whatever in the texture would save some mem

yea, could even do it in a shader where you control the mipmap level trough a variable
I knew we could set the texture size, never thought we can control it through a variable. /facepalm
im not exactly sure how it works with setting that variable though, I know you can lower it, I dont know exactly how it loads the tex in the bg, if it tries to load in the full res first, or only the mipped one

it does load the whole atlas, but thats one tex draw compared to loading in two 128x256's

aaaaa that's what I remember reading. that it turns into a squared texture no matter what
when I have a 256x512 sprite, if I ever need another one, I'd add it to the same texture, and just offset the uv's in the mesh or shader

well for signs/textures same as the one above it makes no difference if it is 512x2048 or 2048x2048. just wanted to know which is more optimised. A 512x2048 or 2048x2048 texture with alpha?
storage wise, the 512x2048 makes sense, though I think you could get away with just using alpha and adding color to the table trough some math, or a tiny one-table sized mask.

if you have to ask that, you arent ready to publish something on the marketplace. google tutorials for material variables/parameters, material instances, etc

read the guidelines, they generally dont accept one object, you'll need to make a proper material applied to the mesh(es), set up example scene, add lod's to the mesh, etc

Hey @maiden rapids it's a decent looking AMP but you need more models in your pack in order to get accepted
try to make either multiple amps or an audio setup with speakers, amps instruments etc

I have a question for creators (and buyers) who use the marketplace. Besides your own initiative, how do you gauge interest for what your next big marketplace product should be? The suggestions thread on the forum didn't have a single post for 6 months. Do you run polls on twitter? Do you check what's missing in the store (can be a bit tricky with so much content). How do you find that gap that needs filling?
i just build whatever I feel like and hope for the best.
and in the random occasion I do think of something thats not done, I make it, and discover its not done because people dont want it

I bought a little model, but scanning something that isn't completely rigid is difficult
I'd have to scan every little piece and put it together (and the little plastic bones don't scan well)

I was thinking UE could do with a live chatroom plugin. Even for singleplayer games, it would be cool to allow players in game to chat (maybe share game photos) and would increase engagement. Just throwing this idea out there to any devs who might be able to create such a thing.

Do you price them based on number of assets?
Do you price them based on complexity and time needed to create them?
Do you price them based on market demand/usefulness of the asset?
Do you price them based on competing assets?
Do you price them based on another factor?
Also for the people who buy assets. Do you take into account the complexity of the assets being sold or you just compare the number of assets contained in each asset pack, when it come to an asset packs price?

Having things that you re-use built up out of multiple varieties and randomising them is something that most projects should want to have, I had thought of building such systems myself to help placing assets, but this looks better and much more featured than anything I might have built for myself

When I'm trying to submit an asset for approval, it's not letting me do it. Nor it is saving the form as a draft nor it is submitting. I even tried it again from scratch, struggling for last 2 hrs. Can someone please help me? Or can someone tell me the Mail to contact epic games regarding this?
I haven't tried submitting yet, but I can't seem to save as draft either @unborn dirge .
Also, I've got a set of blueprints I've tested on 3 different versions of UE4. 4.19, 4.20, 4.21. Since there's no changes to the actual content for each version, should I only upload 1 version?
I can totally do one for each engine version, but if the content is going to remain the same, am I doing it wrong by doing multiple uploads?
@stiff pond If you dont need to make changes to your package between versions then you dont need to upload a new one. There are check boxes that you can set for which versions of the engine a particular upload of the package is compatible with.

Just make sure you are uploading the version for UE 4.19 and not the one for UE 4.21, and it should be fine
