Me too
3 weeks to go before MegaJam starts
@subtle onyx Actually it’s 2 weeks 2 days. Getting close!
what should we prepare before megaJam start ?
Having a blank project in version control and having everyone synced and ready before you start is always a good idea
I second the notion that you should work out your pipeline before the jam starts.
Get familiar with itch.io, how to set up your project there, how to package and push builds, etc.
Any advice for a first timer?
I'm going the trial by fire route. I've never even made a game before 😂
I'm going the trial by fire route. I've never even made a game before 😂
@silk panther That's two of us 🤣
@livid quiver Best of luck, fellow embracer of chaos!
is it okay to put starter content in epic megajam????
I will like to join a team as a modeler
Yup. But you must disclose that.
thnx
Okay thanks
It's that time of the year again!!
I don't understand. I'd like to participate to Epic MegaJam but I live in Quebec and it says that "The Contest is not open to individuals in the province of Quebec, Brazil, or Italy."
But why ?? 🙁
something to do with your local laws
Did they ever announce the winners for Film Jam? It's been a year now 😵
@idle rock because the law in those regions/countries make it harder to legally include in international prize contests.
Oki. that's too bad 🙁 well I was getting prepared for the jam but good thing I caught this early on then..
@idle rock I noticed Quebec gets excluded for giveaways in other things too and looked it up, apparently due to very strict laws:

Hey folks
Heyo!
I'm hosting a Game Jam, come join and have some fun! https://itch.io/jam/mika-jam-l
MegaJam 2020 out of reach for Brazil 😦
Prepping for this MegaJam, watched last years announcement to see if I could come up with any ideas based on the theme. Then I watched last years results and the overall winner was a really well done version of the idea I had come up with. Felt nice.
hey any big jams for christmas
My guess of the theme in Epic MegaJam might be a christmas theme
LOL
So it might not be a christmas theme
Guess i need to practice harder for the Epic MegaJam
it won't have a Christmas theme, the theme is always some kind of expression
Yeah, I'm expecting another idiom.
They have been seasonal in the past, but not usually obvious enough to tie to a specific holiday.
I'm trying to think of some kind of a joke about how the theme is going to be a regular expression
but I can't think of any good regex for the joke lol
my guess about theme - is something related to remote friendship, being alone or in a company
its probably something about a new beginning
When will the theme be announced?
4th
any idea when Assembla will be open
im almost ready for Epic MegaJam I just need to learn modelling and Animation
lmao
Should be interesting seeing paper2D with Unreal skeleton. I think I have most of the bones covered. Testing it before the jam.
I am trying to time how long it takes to build the framework. Should this be 1 or 2 days of the jam and the rest for level design, sound and story?
We have 7 days to complete the games in MegaJam right???
yep
So we have plenty of time to make the game
Yo, First time Jamer here. Noticed that audio and visuals take a good chunk of the score. Whats your opinion on using 3rd party assets to focus more on other aspects is it worth the potential score loss? I'm guessing ppl usually have loads of assets they made for themselves before the jam actually starts?
I'd focus on the main game loop and work your way from there
Stream everything built from scratch then hope to win 😛
"Hour 16: Well good news is I'm done creating the programming language. The bad news is that it's in binary"
Good thing for the script that converts the binary into hexadecimal. Always hated reversing the bytes. From there assembling the machine codes should be a piece of cake form there. 🙂
I kinda want to see someone do a punch card game jam game 🙂
No - because those also don't count. Anything made before the jam starts does not count for scoring.
They do score the implementation of the premade or sourced assets, I thought.
yes, you can get marks for how well you used those things
you just don't score anything for the part you didn't do
I really don't think it's a numbers game (even tho technically it is), the game that overall blows the jury away is going to win, exception might be if like all assets and stuff is someone elses
You can't take a pre assembled game into the jam, so unless you directly copy something, you'll at least get credit for use and implementation. They did specifically state that it must use mechanics or features that exceed that of which has been done in any of their tutorials
If the judging on assets was to strict, it would just be unfair to most to start with since nobody can be amazing at everything. Especially for those doing solo jams. Expect to see a lot of pre made models, textures, and script in the jam. Very few I think actually build literally everything from scratch, even AAA studios don't do that.
I think jipp got it pretty accurate. Get your loop on lockdown, either tie it into your theme or tie the theme into it, then "whitebox" everything to get a working playstate, make it meet the minimum requirements, make sure it packages, then start choosing what assets need created custom for it and what ones could just be filler pre mades.
There have been teams of only artists that placed in finals who didn't use any original code but creatively implemented lots of pre made code. And there have been teams of only programmers that placed in finals without any custom artwork animation or sound, but creatively implemented pre made ones to exceed what they originally were
I personally think the purpose and spirit of jams is to be innovative and break the mold a bit to try new things, not necessarily take the hardest path doing them and hold yourself back, just play to your strengths and see how far you can take them. In the time limit of course
Wow guys, thanks for the amazing replies!! Can't wait to get started
so asset flipping is encouraged, got it
idk, just doesnt sit rigth with me
if you make a game, make a game, I mean I get why you would use other peoples stuff, but man, idk
Where is the fun in that
you can have 5 people on a team, thats more than enough to make everything yourselves for a jam game
What's up folks?
I'm a programmer with quite a bit of experience in Blender, so I'm going to write every bit of code, and make every model from scratch for my solo sub, however, I don't have the first clue where to start with sound design, and I'm a trash-man at material design, so I'm going to grub together every freebie I've snagged over the past 3 years into something I like. Of course, I will document all of it. It's just not feasible for me to learn those things in the next 2 weeks, then not use them again (And of course have to relearn them) in the spring.
- there are people working solo
- some people might prefer not have 5 people teams because communication can get overwhelming
- just because you have 5 people doesn't mean you can find somebody for every discipline e.g.: audio
- if you're jamming with your friend group rather than finding people online you might for example lack any kind of 3D modeller
- some people might want to do something that relies on a different role: e.g.: I love doing animation programming, but there's no way in hell I could have an animator make a walk cycle + several other animations I'd need in a week, so I'm just gonna download them from Mixamo and credit them. Likewise a UI programmer would need UI assets to do their thing.
- it's a game jam, people should have fun free of developing their idea however they see fit. If I have to be honest I find the comment you post kinda condescending and downright rude to developers with different approaches.
I mean I guess
yall do what you seem fit, but i wana get the points for actually making the assets ourselves, my team has everything you could ask for, we have dedicated sound designers, versatile programmers, 3d artists, even a mocap suit, so I think we are ready to produce a game that is actually ours. 7 days is short for making everything on our own, but we have a clear structure of who is doing what, we will setup everything before time and do some test runs with everyone, we will be ready.
7 weeks? 7. days
yeah, my bad
Sounds like you got a solid team, can't wait to see what you come up with!I think with a solid team its possible, but as stated earlier solo or perhaps an beginner team would struggle and if the choice was either a bad game or a game with some pre-made assets I would choose the latter
makes sense to me
Beginner c++ programmer looking for a team . Can do a bit of game design as well if you want to.
Looking for - A team with another programmer
DM me if intrested!
Honest question. When you made your original remarks, "if you make a game, make a game," were you under the impression that your team was typical, or were you just trying to delegitimize beginners and solos?
Lets put it this way: I support the idea of not getting points for work you havent done
Everyone makes games the way they enjoy making them. I just dont like working with premade stuff as it feels less "my" work
Especially when it comes to overused packs
Can we use assets we own from the marketplace if it is a framework not assets? Example would be building from scratch an RPG template. I do plan to stream it. I am talking about getting docked points here.
Yoou can use any premade asset with full disclosure
I think as long as you build it from scratch within the time frame, you get credit for it. I do not know how that works in terms of using something as reference and building it with that reference as well reference
I will have a computer next to me with the code and just be writing it again.
I also do not know how they treat things with 3d model textures. Like making a 3d model and texture from scratch, then using a pre made screw cap or decals for detail
i mean, technically that is copying existing material and therefore not original
its in a grey area, depends if you go for points or time save
So, here's a total Hypothetical.
Suppose 2 people have the same exact project except 1 person makes their own (crappy) 3D character, and the other uses a pre-made (Fantastic) 3D character. Will the one with the crappy character win, or would it be a tie?
I'm sure the scoring isn't as standardized as that, but hypothetically...
Well it would depend on the fun factor and how much either adds based on its effect on the player. If you have a 3D character and use every mechanic you can and show that you really put time customizing the detail it would win hands down. That is what the industry wants. If the crappy made character, was very thought out and worked with the fun of the game it has equal chance. Everyone needs to remember its about the effort you show that you put into your work and how fun the game is to play.
but a framework could be stripped of all assets and used with no penalty? That is more my question.
I would bet that a you would need to add functionality, and the functionality of the framework would not be judged.
see that makes sense. so if that were true the added functions would be judged and not the other content. To me that would be completely unfair and unmanageable in regulation point of view.
don't tell me others don't use functions from other projects and not submit that it was written before the jam.
There's not really anything stopping anybody. I'm going to stream, and get done what I can. My only goal is to get the foundations of something I can be proud of in the future.
I think most of us that have never done a jam before would like to know how the points work and know how their project will be judged.
That's asking a lot. Games are so nuanced that it seems impossible to judge them objectively, which makes sense. I don't judge games that I play objectively. However, it'd be cool if they streamed a bit of their judging process to see what kind of comments they make in the process of testing, and how they view each submission.
I know when a game is good. I want to keep playing and not go to the next 😄
I wonder how they check the assets for 'being developed during the jam'
well, you can always re-export the FBX...
'ey, let's not make this a "how to cheat" thread.
The thing is that you can make everything and rebuild it from scratch during the jam. It will go faster because you have something to reference. I don't view my references as assets. If that was the case, no one can use Google for the jam.
If you think of something, keep it to yourself, and don't do it. Maybe DM unreal on Twitter or something, but don't share it publicly.
isn't this channel for this? and I don't imply the cheating... although I do think some people leverage this 🙂
I am just trying to understand 😦
I was talking about sharing methods for cheating the system.
I didn't mean to share cheating techniques, as I don't know how they do assessment.
I mean, think about this... taking into account the number of submissions, the fact that only an executable is present and the time between the last day of the jam and results, I don't think they really enforce the rules... Maybe for winners only, I never won...
So, taking this into account I usually just enjoy the process and challenge my knowledge to try something new from the game design, engine features or other perspectives...
and then I sleep... a lot
That’s why I’m getting into it, too. I feel like a valid submission for this contest is a huge step in my learning process.
I would like to raise the bar a bit for those that are trying to get a top spot. When making your game, ask yourself if this prototype is good enough to show that it could do well in this industry. I think if we all go into it with this mind set we will have better competition and a clear goal for our final games.
Is there any one here going solo?
I have been wondering if it is possible for a team or solo to win 2 modifier awards. Like Tiny award and Is this real life?.
@versed epoch last year the same team won both 2nd finalist prize and one of the modifiers with their game Cosmic Catastrophy (basically ‘Overcooked in Space with cats’)
I think that only happens tho when an entry fully qualifies for both, and the prizes do not overlap.
It would make little sense awarding both Tiny Award and ITRL to the same entry when ITRL has the same prizes and more as Tiny Award.
When I got a finalist spot with a solo entry last year, another person won the "Army of One" category. Which makes sense, as the prizes were very similar.
What was your submission? Just curious to see what Solos look like.
Oh man. That looks dope as hell. Congrats on being a finalist and congrats on being so talented!
Thanks
Hey I wanted to ask that what is the theme
of the jam
or when will it be announced
It'll be announced when the jam starts on the 4th
So about the file timestamps:
pretty sure we have to submit packaged projects so the files would be saved and budled into an engine internal format and not fbx. Even if it was fbx you can just get any hex editor and change the bytes witch represent the creation time. No one is gonna tell you when it was made after you do that.
challenging part is actually finding those bites inside the file, but it should be in the header and headers have a simple structure usually
hey does anybody wanna join MEGAJAM DM me 🙂
Has the assembla gone up yet? Not home to check today
Looks like from mobile it's still blocked
Hi, I am looking for a programmer for game jam thats happenning this weekend(especially someone who can handle networking, replication etc). There are pries to win, dm me for more info
Can I use Quixel Mixer for Epic MegaJam????
Yes
How about Quixel Megascan?
Okay thanks
Cool😎
I thought its not allowed
it says quite clearly in the rules that you can use assets from other sources, but you have to declare that you've used them and you don't score points for those assets
Good morning
I am not able to get the 'Neo city' Free kit from kit bash. Anyone has an idea why?
Cause its not free anymore
Hello everyone, please tell me, but for jam you need a full game or can you DEMO or alpha?
Technically you can submit anything, there are no regulations on that.
It's just that a full game will obviously qualify higher
Well thank you
And if I already have a project that I recently started doing it can be shown on the game jam
?
@supple terrace No, the whole point of jams like this is to start from scratch and make something completely new based around the theme
👍
yeh, it would be stupid to let people submit previously made stuff. Witch imo also should include any and all assets, cuz one can just take any premade assets and make a game with them, granted they wont be scored.
I think it is fair like that
will there be a theme this year?
Could I get the minimum age requirement for the current jam?
Actually I had to leave the previous jam because my of my age.
So would love to know if I could participate in this one.
There's a theme every time, you find out what it is as soon as the jam starts
it's in the rules;
ok! just wait for 2 more years
Is it me or assbela sign ups link is dead
Also chance of me streaming stright up after jam are slim, if anything i will do that after christmas
You can get permission from the legal guardian. Ask them to sign you up.
if you are older than 16, but younger than the age of majority, then yes, you can have your legal guardian give permission
This will be my first jam. Is UE an elgible tool to use for most jams?
Hi guys
lol, weird...
I'm looking for a 3D artist to collaborate for the game jam
Depends on the rules of the Jam. Unity Jams will typically require you to use Unity3D software. This is UE4 jam, as far as I know, the accepted entries are the ones made in a version of UE4
I have a Question. Can I have tools already made in houdini used in the UE4 Game jam?
if it just tools then it's not unreasonable - depending on how much those tools automate your workflow, you may want to mention them in your submission
but tools are tools
tools are fine i think, like editor utilities, plugins and so on should be usable without any mention.
more or less, yeah - though if I were using tools that pretty much did all the work (e.g. generating textures using templates in Substance, or generating foliage from presets in Speed Tree), it would make sense to mention it
yeah, the border between tools and premade assets is becoming more diluted with software progressing quick over time, I've had such dilemmas recently
for example, if I shoot some textures like rust or abstract shapes before jam and use them to mix multiple together in Photoshop + manual work, into texture to use in jam, would it be closer to tools or premade content side?
i would say thats pretty much tools
the rules on whats premade and what isnt is quite messy
to me it sounds like stuff you took 1:1 or with little changes you gotta disclose for sure
and maybe mention if you use procedural tools and stuff like that
when I've mixed audio in the past, I've credited where the samples came from, if I were to use photo sources for my textures, I'd do the same
yeah, source credits may be nice
Signup for source control with Assembla is now available! The link is on the itch.io page, but here's a handy one: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1uAJp2F6-TWmP9PC42HdqHQPsWcDljPZDFTYErRKl_aw
Welcome to the 2020 Epic MegaJam!
As a participant of the #ue4jam, you and your team get free access to the Assembla platform to collaborate using Perforce, SVN, or Git version control repositories during the jam.
Perforce and SVN repositories support direct integration with Unreal Engine to save and collaborate effect...
How do I code, I want to learn
why use Assembla over GitHub
You'll run into repo size limits pretty fast on github
Depending on what sort of assets and such you've got
and not assembla?
So what special categories are you guys looking at going for?
Top 3
Hello! Quick question- I've seen a tiny base build of Ue4 been linked around on streams, anyone here got a link to it?
@edgy fulcrum here you go, it's called Nano made by Pfist https://github.com/polymoon/Nano
How to reduce the size of your packaged game.
I had a fun time with this jam last month - I put together another for December (with end time adjusted for Epic MegaJam 🙂 )
https://itch.io/jam/marketplace-monthly-mashup-december-2020
Did anyone stream playing through the jam entries these past few jams?
@gaunt copper did! (and he had a neat bot where viewers could submit a score)
Github only allows Git as source control, Assembla allows for different Source Control options such as Subversion and our lord and saviour Perforce.
imho Git and Github are designed around the idea of developing code-based projects and not really built with game dev in mind much, personally I find both awful for game development.
Since Github as a platform was made with code-only projects in mind when you try using it for a game project you'll run out of your monthly allocated space very quickly.
As for Git itself as Source Control software I think it's really designed more for how general software are developed using the waterfall model, and not really well suited for the more 'chaotic' agile model used for game development. Or to explain it with more explicit examples: when you code software you have your code base, then have different branches being developed in parallel by different people and eventually pulled back into the main branch after being validated. Game dev is kinda like that in theory, but in practice every branch can also have 2-5 people working on the same files at the same time by accident and... I think Perforce for example was just designed to handle those game dev specific scenarios WAY better.
i tried to setup perforce but it didnt really work, so im just going to go with GitHub
if we run out we can always just spend that €5 to get it going again, sooo
Or you could spend that $0 and use git with assembla instead of GitHub 😉
I'd rather spend five bucks and have version control that works with binaries
@azure flicker Git was design by Linus Torvalds for Linux Kernel project when source control system they using license changes, GitHub is just hosting service for git that just happen to become popular and it has not much to do how Git works. It was indeed done for text file use only since there not much binaries in Linux kernel source and heavily on focus on offline merging from most exotic sources which linux kernel tend to have as 1000s of different people and companies contribute to it. Thats why they made it offline and decentralized it makes git pretty versatile
Linus Torvalds visits Google to share his thoughts on git, the source control management system he created two years ago.
If you want to use Git i recommend Microsoft Azure repos, it's free to 5 users (ideal for jam ;]) and has unlimited space with LFS support (also unlimted). Only size limitation is push size limit of 5GB which is reticules for git.
!gameidea
@dim plume, Check your direct messages. :incoming_envelope:
Or you could spend zero bucks and use perforce with assembla, and still get VC that works with binaries
humm, idk man i think its kinda late to step away from github now
Jam is in 3 days and some people on the team are having problems setting it up
Size migth be an issue but i hope a little money can fix those
We have our DevSquad Game Jam starting in about 3 weeks 😄 We have just announced some of our sponsors: ActionVFX, Creators Vault, and Poliigon!
https://itch.io/jam/devsquad-2020
A game jam from 2020-12-21 to 2021-01-11 hosted by DevSquadLearning. The DevSquad Game Jam is a relaxed competition in which you make a game based on the theme (which will be announced at 6PM on the 21st of December and
Can I use my already made function libraries without any penalty in the epic megajam?
you need to disclose what functionality you have had already implemented before the Jam
these functions will not be evaulated when scoring your submission
anything that is not stock engine or made from scratch has to be disclosed
There are no penalties for pre-made assets, but you don't get scores for them either
^ so you should mention them in your entry submission; it won't impact the score, especially if it's just a basic function library
If anyone wants to take a look at PaperFlip3D before the jam, shoot me a DM.
This raises a question; Suppose 2 people create the same game, but one uses a sourced or premade fantastic character model and the other makes a bad character model during the Jam, will the person who made the bad character get more points for the effort, or would they essentially be counted as the same?
Should I try to do it myself even if I'm not very good, or should I source my weakneses and focus on my strengths?
they clearly state in the rules, any premade asset for them is basically not there.
the person with the bad character model would win, because the other game has no character model from their POV.
also Victor is not allowed to answer most specific questions because that would count as giving “legal advice” towards winning the competition, and doing that is a no-no.
Personally, I recommend the latter. Focus on your strengths. As for your weaknesses: source them from the Marketplace, find a teammate who can handle it, or design the game such that it's not important.
It's not clear, however, if bad content counts negatively.
It's pretty clear. Anything you make yourself that is of poor quality will count against you.
Yeah, that' s contrary to what what gmilh said was "Clear," but it's what I assumed.
It's possible to make up for low points in visuals if you have excellent fun factor, audio, or use of theme.
Are you making a game pfist?
Planning on participating, yes.
sweet
is anyone inrested in teaming with me during this game jam
also dose anyone know the theme ?
or have andy idea what it might be
I think the theme might be "2.5D" 😄 I'm dreaming
I would cry so hard into my pillow every night of the Jam... Do you really want that for me?
My submission would be a snail-mailed jar of my tears.
Nobody knows, but the best you could do is go back and look at the themes of the past Jams.
The theme will be announced on Friday at the end of the kickoff stream.
Info for the kickoff stream is up. https://forums.unrealengine.com/unreal-engine/events/1838048-inside-unreal-2020-epic-megajam-kickoff
2020 Epic MegaJam Kickoff
WHAT
It's time to kickoff the 2020 Epic MegaJam! We'll be joined by representatives from IGDA, KitBash3D, and Microsoft to talk about what to expect from the jam, answer questions, and last but not least... announce the theme! Make sure you stick around for Microsoft's presentation on how to create a
Saying that using premade stuff doesnt affect your score is ignorant towards the rules witch state that using premade stuff will not be scored for creation, only implementation
So if we are interpreting this rigth
self made game asset, decent looking, badly implemented = premade/sourced assed well implemented
but if you can make your own assets we will assume you can also implement them well, so self made should always come out on top as long as you know what you are doing
But looking at past jams its either huge fun factor or great graphics
for the winning entry, so if you can cover both, you are good to go
my team will probably take premade materials and decals, but will model and texture most of our stuff on our own
Thereby saccing points on textures but winning back on asset creation and implementation
"if you can make your own assets we will assume you can also implement them well" that's absolutely not true.
To make an example, I've spent a long time learning animation programming, and all that it goes into making character animations feel right and blend properly into one another in-game.
An animator or a blueprint programmer with low experience in animation programming could definitely still get animations in engine, but it will be apparent to a trained eye the implementation is very iffy and the different animations don't flow into one another as they should.
Same goes for lighting. I've seen so many 3D artist rush lighting as an afterthought and greatly underestimate how powerful lighting is in affecting your game's presentation. Once I knew this small team working on a game, and they were struggling so much with their models and texture they kept feeling their work looked bad and were redoing it over and over. Friend of mine with some experience in lighting happened to walk by and took over one of their laptops, played around with lighting for like an hour, and when he was done the same game with the same models and texture suddenly had the looks of a Steam released title.
cant see the reply comments on my phone, cant update discord for some reason, its so annyoing not being able to see what people reply
old reply style was better anyways
you can click on the reply part and it'll literally scroll up and highlight the replied to message.
on phone the whole reply message is replaced with a pen icon, but i found a trick to read it
well, im positive we will be able to make some great ligthing, I have some experience on that area 🖒
if the guys got the assets, ill make them look good
will go for volumetric fog and reflections
the definition of graphics in any graphics mod, ever
We have another sponsor for our Game Jam 😄
Visualistic Studios has some cool packsages they're offering winners
Hello ! Beginner here.
I wish to participate in the Epic Megajam, Army of One and would appreciate if anyone could give me some insight.
In the rules it is stated.
-The 2020 Epic MegaJam will feature 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finalists, and five modifier categories. Each team member will receive the prize awards.
- Each team (including, but not limited to the finalists) can also win one of our five modifier categories.
Does that mean that an individual can be in a team and compete for the Army of One prize?
If yes the game has to be different from the one the team has summited, a game made individually ( most logical assumption ) or am I missing something ?
not it means that each entry can potentially be one of the 3 finalists AND also win in one the modifier categories.
but you as an individual are only allowed to submit ONE entry, which can either be in a team or a solo entry made by only yourself.
you cannot, under any circumstance, partecipate with more than one entry (an entry = a game project)
For Army of One specifically, that means that if you submit a game you worked on by yourself, you’re eligible to potentially win as one of the 3 [game] finalist and also win in the Army of One category. Meaning if your game is one of the finalists and you also win in the AoO category you will receive the prizes listed for both.
For a bigger example, you could submit a game made by yourself which work in VR and has a build size below 100MB. Then your game would be eligible to run for 3 finalist spots and also eligible to run for 3 special categories. But in that scenario you could only potentially win finalist spot + only one of the special categories.
You can never win more than one special category, but you can potentially be a finalist and also win one special category.
@azure flicker Thank you ! This information is quite useful and answers my question.
Clarification noted ! Thanks @azure flicker
you’re welcome 😄
Going for Army of One with a VR entry, should be fun 😀
nice
Hi solo fighter... want to know... whats your tactic for JAM? 1 Day design, 3 day art, 3 day implment? using premade asset?👀
1 day brain storming game ideas, 2 days Level Design, 2 days modelling, 2 days coding, Im Using Original Assets.
a whole day just for ideas, i mean, it is definitely important, 7 days is soo short tho
Yeah, you got a point there
I mean most jams are just a weekend 😄
I'd say 15 minutes on design, 2-3 days on art, then the rest remembering I'm not a programmer and scrambling to make something resembling game mechanics.
Because that's what's going to happen if I end up solo 🤣
@fringe furnace My method for solo is:
- try and limit main design/brainstorm to 1day, quicker is better (Depends on how inspired by theme you are)
- start on mechanics ASAP, blockout levels, use cubes for art (or premade assets, noting as they are imported into project)
- once the game is done/fun, replace cubeart and premade assets as much as possible
Just in time: https://forums.unrealengine.com/unreal-engine/announcements-and-releases/1838621-unreal-engine-4-26-released
Unreal Engine 4.26 released!
With the release of Unreal Engine 4.26, you can create environments, characters, and creatures of unparalleled realism and design your entire production pipeline around Unreal Engine.

using a new version for a jam is not very smart imo
New version is probably fine. (I say this despite having been burned more than once by new versions in the past)
I wouldn't use a new version, you never know what random bugs you might encounter
and they can screw you 😄
Just make sure everyone on your team is using the same version.
Good lord the headaches version misalignment can cause
Pssst Assembla Signup: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1uAJp2F6-TWmP9PC42HdqHQPsWcDljPZDFTYErRKl_aw
Welcome to the 2020 Epic MegaJam!
As a participant of the #ue4jam, you and your team get free access to the Assembla platform to collaborate using Perforce, SVN, or Git version control repositories during the jam.
Perforce and SVN repositories support direct integration with Unreal Engine to save and collaborate effect...
oh god yes, I can't even imagine working in different versions 😐
I got some horror stories from Unity's early days.
is anyone intrested in teaming with me for this game jam
I have got a friend request on steam from a member of SideFX to get a free 2 month houdini license, however I have not heard from him since he has been offline for 2 days, would I be able to receive a license in time for game jam?
4.26 out... Called it! 😄
So, gonna be kicking off the mega jam from a hospital bed with my laptop 🤣🤣🤣 Gotta go to the ER for a hernia atm and I'll still be in the hospital when the jam kicks off tomorrow, this is gonna be fun lmao
Energies to you brother
Please don't be too hard on yourself. Health is above everything
I have a question
Is it safe to use UE4.26 in game jam
I have zero experience with game jams and I am only a beginner with Unreal looking make my first project by the ed of this week 🙂
thats fine
great
yes
@urban meteor ty and I'd say 4.26 is safe to use
great then lt's switch!
@wet moat just below the game hams channel is a channel called game-jams-lft
Post there for a team!
its 17:20 for me it shouldnt be an iss
I'm late to the party ... just realized the Mega Jam kicks off tomorrow and I don't have a team. Is anyone looking for a Blueprint/C++ programmer? Don't really care about the game design or the art direction, I'll leave that to the other creatives. I'm an engineer at heart, just like gluing the bricks together and making something that works. Feel free to DM me. 😄
@bitter laurel You may want to post that in #game-jam-lfg
"Submissions may not depict nudity, animal cruelty, any illegal activity or substance, or any other offensive or obscene subject matter as determined in Sponsor’s sole discretion."
So uhh is shooting people out of the window?🤔
I interpret the rule as being less about genre/style and more about content.
so its not going to be FPS based then
I don't think they would reject a game simply for being a shooter. They would reject it for containing offensive/obscene content.
Do you think basic the NSFW idea would apply. Make something people would feel comfortable watching at work?
Yes that's probably a safe bet.
Just realized jam starts tomorrow <.>
What about a pot farm simulator? It's only legal in certain parts of the country 😉
@upbeat helm Lmao I made a template pot farmer in ue4 for VR. Idk what I will do with it but it definitely is fun
Also, checked into the ER guys, wish me luck! Hopefully it's not a hernia but I'll know soon enough :3
Haha we should have teamed up! One of my stupid goals one day is to make a procedural weed generator with houdini, maybe one day we make the pot farm simulator the world has been waiting for!!
And take care brotha, we are sending you good vibes 🍻
@upbeat helm tyty and I actually would be down to make it a community project. I'm a former professional cannabis chef with a lot of connections in the industry
Plus with all the VR players that smoke, would definitely pop off
@gaunt copper omg, you are right, it's not today 😮
i had Dec4 in my head and Dec10 and didn't made make sense xd
Yeah it's unusual this year. The jam kickoff is on a Friday.
And it ends next Friday.
Are we allowed to create a blank project and upload it to source control before the jam starts?
Yeah @steel lodge plenty of people do that, As long as you are just not actively working on it
I do like that it's on a Friday
Cool. Which source control would people recommend for the jam? I've used all of them before, just wondering what is the easiest to set up and get going
If you don't have experience with any of them I'd go with Perforce
Not that perforce is always easy - but it's the best for UE
@steel lodge basically you can do whatever you want (and use premade assets and whatever), you just have to tell them what you used
I see whole houdini gamejam kits on the web. So, that really gives you an advantage. But I guess if let the organizers know that you used them as premade assets, it is fine (right @tranquil matrix ) ?
meanwhile on my end
"Github can't be THAT bad, amirite?"
Ah, the mistakes of youth.
Another question - 4.26 was just released. Since it's released, it's safe enough to use that for the jam right? Or would people recommend the last version. I know sometimes there a few hotfixes that get released quite quickly
@steel lodge Considering the source control: We will try the free Assembla accounts offered for game jam participants. It is basically Perforce on Steroids, as far as I understood. Lets see.
@void hull Assembla is the server provider (and they do other things as well) - You can use Git/Perforce/SVN respectively with Assembla
So, we upload our games to Itch.IO before midnight Dec. 11th, but do we then submit the links somewhere else?
@void hull I can't answer specific questions when it comes to the rules - The only answer I can give is that any premade assets must be listed as part of your submission
That's why it's really important that you don't wait until last minute before you fill out the submission - There are two steps to it: 1. Upload the game to your itch.io page. 2. Submit the game to the 2020 Epic MegaJam. And give yourself ample time to do so! There are several questions you need to answer to submit the game.
I think I just answered your question above - let me know if not
All of the information required to submit to the jam is requested when you submit it
Also important to remember that a 30-60s gameplay video is required
You did, Thanks!
Doesn't have to be edited or anything like that - although some teams do put together a trailer. Great way to get people to play your game, and very similar to how you would market your game "in the real world". So good practice!
Checkout Escape Velocity - Previous jam winner, they have a steam page now! https://store.steampowered.com/app/1466110/Escape_Velocity_Solar_System/
Watched last years Jam Announcement stream, and IIRC, 2k had joined, but only a few hundred submitted.
That sounds about right. The submission rate is usually around 20-25%.
400 subs, with ~1k devs... Good news for AoO's like myself, lol.
Or bad news because they overestimated themselves and fell short...
Remember that teams can be up to 5, and each team can only submit once - so there's always going to be a lot less submissions than particpants 🙂
Epic MegaJam last year had ~460 submissions
I second @tranquil matrix here. Perforce is hands down the best source control for UE4 projects and I'd argue agile game projects in general.
I think something like Git can be alright for non game related, code only projects. But when it comes to game dev, Perforce is the best suited for the kind of workload you'd be experiencing.
I run my own Perforce server on Amazon Web Services to be able to use Perforce on my own personal projects, and so far it has worked far better than any alternative SC would've. I also had a couple of instances where I'd be doing game jams with programmers used to work solo and use Git who pushed to use that instead... and every time we ended up having to pass files over USB stick to a single computer because Git would fail on us somehow and the person/people who pushed to use it would be clueless about troubleshooting the problem.
TL:DR; pick the one you feel more comfortable with, and ideally know how to troubleshoot. But if you want an external input for your decision, Perforce is the best option based on my 5 years of experience with it.
that's the one you said on stream you were gonna add in your steam library of local multiplayer games to play when having people over, wasn't it?
Yeah it's great - super easy for everyone to pick up and play
I love seeing game jam games get fleshed out and released on Steam.
So, on top of getting admitted to the hospital for possible appendicitis, my ass also got covid
Fml
yo what happened?
@wintry nymph Lol the universe screwing with me is what happened. Still gonna make an entry for the game jam though
That's good, I thought you are going to skip the MegaJam
Hey
Hey
Wait for the theme to be announced tomorrow and get excited. 😄
Once the jam starts, you can go back to the jam page to submit your game.
So, when event start there will provide as with theme,
Than we will create a game base on that theme,
Than we will submit the game,
And base on the game, there will give the score to the game,
And if you win, you will get the Price.
Am I missing something?
Or it is the way
This is the way.
Hello, we are a team of 5 and do we need all 5 members to register in itch.io or one is enough??
I think all 5 have too
only one needs to register
Dude, I'm super excited for the theme announcement, cannot wait :3
What's the award for placing high in the mega jam? (If there is one)
@crisp bear There's a whole list of awards and prizes on the jam page, that's linked at the top of the channel.
Ah, thanks. I always forget you can put stuff there
so excited! for Epic MegaJam 😂
do we have to register before? or can we just register while its ongoing?
So, good news! Because I got covid, the hospital sent me home With some antibiotics since my appendix didn't burst yet and is only considered a "hot appendix" and the dude who does the appendix surgeries didn't want to work on a covid positive dude basically.
I get to do the game jam from. The comfort of my own home woo won't!!
With my dog ✌
@languid sparrow that's good news, just always stay safe, and keep healthy
What does visual means, is it particle system???
in what context are you asking about the meaning of the word visual?
if you're referring to the voting category for the game jam, it refer to the quality of: 3d models, textures/materials, 2D sprites, lighting, particle effects, animations, composition, and general presentation. A game with only flat coloured materials, but good colour composition, lighting, and consistent style, will always trump over games where high quality textures and materials are improperly used without any knowledge of proper composition, poor lighting, and inconsistent style.
As for which categories particle systems do affect, I'd argue both Visuals, in terms of how good they look and how well they fit with the general visual presentation, and Fun Factor., because particles provide player feedback which reinforce the sense of player presence and can instigate positive or negate feel into the player.
Okay thanks, now i know what i need to get a score in MegaJam
Some one wanna join me for the jam?
@kindred tartan .. see the #game-jam-lfg section
-
It goes without saying guys (and gals) .. that being 'accommodating' and 'being relaxed' about other people's opinions (who may have different cultural/religious/other values) .. is a great way to form or join a good team. For example: People fall out (horribly) over what type of game to make on Day 1 often. Don't be like that.. put your reasons patiently & respectfully.
-
Learn new skills (beyond what you already know .. be a 'Asset' to the team!).. including those which are not your usual .. use the pressure of the JAM as a good stimuli !
-
It has been repeated a gazillion times by veterans here .. to 'aim small' or 'reduce the scope' of your game (reduce reduce reduce!).. when participating for the first few times.
Good luck to those who have found a team, and who haven't. Stay positive, network with others (psst.. you are not going to land yourself with the next Sid Meier 99% of the times .. so consider compromising )
oh boy, we are going to have mocap anim in our game, so excited!
@here Hi! Could anyone help with registering a team for megajam? How is that done and do I need to have that done before the jam begins?
hi folks
does anyone know when and where can I find the jam theme?
@idle geode it can be done at any time before the jam ends in a week
- one person in the team needs to have an account on itch.io
- go to the jam page and click 'Join jam' https://itch.io/jam/2020-epic-megajam
- in about 6 hours the jam will start, and a new option 'Submit your project' will appear on the jam page for the people who have joined (if you won't haven joined yet by then, you can still click 'Join jam' and immediately 'Submit your project' at any time before it ends)
- to submit a project, open Itch.io and login with your account, from the top right of your browser window click on the down arrow next to your username, and from the dropdown menu select 'Upload new project' (7th row from the top)
- your browser will open to a page where you can set up a new game page. You'll see lots of options such as description, images, etc. All that you have to worry about to partecipate in the jam is uploading a packaged build of the game, and on the very bottom of the page in 'Visibility & access' make sure the game is set to Public (that option is usually disable when you first create a new page, if that's the case click Save and refresh the page, the option should become available then).
- after you have created a game page you can go back to the gamejam page, and when clicking on 'Submit project' you'll be prompted to pick a game from the list of game projects you have created under your user account to submit (if you never created another game before, your only option will be the one you just uploaded).
**IMPORTANT NOTES: ** @idle geode you will be able to upload new builds on your game page after submitting your project, up until the final deadline.
Since you can submit your game at any time and keep uploading new packaged builds until the deadline, this means that you should not wait until the last day, or worse the last 10 minutes, to create your game page and submit it to the jam.
Likewise, when you click 'Submit your project' on the jam page, you'll be presented not only with a drop down menu to pick the game page your just uploaded, but also a short questionnaire to fill in with info such as the name, nationalities, and email addresses of your team members, list of premade assets you used, link to a gameplay video, and other info you need to provide. So make sure you submit your project ahead of time, so you have time to provide those info.
It should go without saying but no, you cannot upload new builds after the deadline. The point of this being a competition with prizes is that everyone has a the same limited amount of time to work on their entry. It should be kinda obvious that are not be allowed to keep working on their entry days after the deadline, but I've witnessed in the past people thinking the opposite.
Finally, while you won't be able to upload new builds after the deadline, you will still be able to edit your game page, upload screenshots, even edit the info you wrote down in the questionnaire when submitting your project. For this reason I generally recommend focusing on your game during the jam period, and only get to make your game page pretty after the deadline.
@azure flicker thanks a lot!
@azure flicker one question on the adding the screenshots after the submission. It says in the rules
Submissions must include a link to gameplay footage (between 30-60 seconds) demonstrating recorded gameplay. The footage will be included in our highlight reel on the 2020 Epic MegaJam results livestream.
the core word here is a must which was not there during the last game jame, so I wonder if this is absolutely required before the deadline for submission to be considered for competition
It was actually already there in the last gamejam, that being the Spring Jam 2020. You must be thinking back to the Epic Megajam 2019 where it wasn't mandatory yet.
So the gameplay footage mentioned there is the one linked in the submission form, NOT the video you link in the game page itself. The content of the submission form can actually be edited after the deadline.
Back during the Spring Jam earlier this year what I did was: I recorded a 30 seconds clip with no much thought behind, linked that in the submission form, then the day after the deadline I edited together a better gameplay video and replaced the link no problem.
@azure flicker yeah, I missed the Spring jam. thanks for the info!
For VR games, is there a specific controller scheme / headset that we should make sure to include for judging?
Does anyone know if we can combine the Epic MegaJam with the 7DFPS jam, entering with the same game?
From the 7DFPS side it is allowed
@tranquil matrix I think the countdown for the jam kickoff stream is broken, it says it's already 5 hours 40 minutes past the time
what is the topic it said on the count down timer than jam started 2 hours ago
the one on itch?
can confirm, itch seems to be the correct one
yes, it is at 5 hours for me and going up
3 hours 53 min for me, probably wrong convertion
2 hours 54 mins for me
where did you even get that other timer? 😄
@wet moat it hasn't started, don't worry
phew
the timer is all messed up it seems
how have they managed that
diffirent time zones ?
it was suposed to start a 7 in the uk
i think
but the timer is still broken thats confusing
I guess time zone conversion is broken but that is a third party site, can't blame unreal for this
yeah
its 2020 so blame covid for anything
well, it says spring jam but the timer seems correct for the upcoming one
are we allowed to use 4.26
ofc
then it's your own fault 😅
that's why you cook your projects during the jam and not in the last second @wet moat
yeah I made that mistake when 4.24 was released
true @somber hazel
well, I gave it a few hours but that wasn't enough and I ended up unable to submit
I am sure evebody here is great, but also humble so they won't come forward 🙂
this one is correct
i think
Itch.io page countdown is correct - something has changed with the countdown tool or I'm just not clever enough to figure out what's wrong with it - it works in some local time zones and not others T_T We did forget to update the text though... no spring jam in December ^^
We'll be live in ~1h25min
I'm referring to the countdown which displayed "2019 Spring Jam"
Ah it was a joke - Sry I'm in the midst of like 8 things. See ya'll soon!
cant wait for the jam to start any ideas for theme
How much time till the stream?
So dayum excited for this years Jam!!
36 mins
Yeah woot woot
Its actually 12 at night here!
Oofta
A bit
The "one man army" category be like https://gfycat.com/sparseassuredlamprey
swordfish, watts, high, voltage, Stanley, Jobson, Hugh, Jackman, hacking, play, music
Yep. Solo devs get ready. Every second counts.
Keep that scope down as low as you can, and focus on your strengths.
This goes for everyone, but particularly for solo devs.
Pff, I'm only gonna use one hand as well, make it fair
Guys looking at the cover poster any ideas what cud be the theme ?
Based on the poster, maybe it'll be a retro theme. Man I'd be stoked if it was.
But I think the retro poster is just a throwback to the name, which is based on Epic's original company name.
I am also thinking the same, the casette is giving a retro look
its always a abstract set of words.. which is a good thing .. since we see many ways of 'interpretation' of the 'wise' words of our judging team 😄
Fun fact for those who don't know: Epic Games used to be called Epic MegaGames! Hence the name of this jam.
wait really ?
Yes.
Same reason there's Epic MegaGrants.
Epic Games, Inc. is an American video game and software developer and publisher based in Cary, North Carolina. The company was founded by Tim Sweeney as Potomac Computer Systems in 1991, originally located in his parents' house in Potomac, Maryland. Following his first commercial video game release, ZZT (1991), the company became Epic MegaGames,...
lol .. this is funny to me.. in a way
would be cruel if it was called Epic Microgrants
"Here's five bucks, buy yourself a tree asset"
Could be gears, as the cassette as two small gears rotating, maybe i am just speculating
In early 1992, Sweeney found himself and his new-found video game company in a business where larger studios, such as Apogee Software and id Software, were dominant, and he had to find a more serious name for his. As such, Sweeney came up with "Epic MegaGames", a name which incorporated "Epic" and "Mega" to make it sound like it represented a fairly large company (such as Apogee Software), although he was its only employee.
I mean using not 1 but two similar meaning 'generic' words for the name .. 'Epic' & 'Mega' + Games .. that makes no sense to me..
but I guess they just had their 'Apple' moment (how Steve Jobs named it Apple out of 'supposed' frustration .. to reach a consensus on name)
I pasted a snippet above about the name.
Tim was working alone and wanted to sound like a bigger company so his competitors would take him seriously.
It's an ironic name.
Who has a basement with parents? And maybe some computer. That's the ingredients to become CEO of a big software company.
yeah but its sweet in some sense. I have a company of my own in a different field, and I can relate to how much the 'name' thing initially can at the very least affect you
For sure. 🙂
The label I chose for my side projects - Polymoon Games - is based on my tendency to have too many side projects. Poly = many, moon = moonlighting as, well, everything. 😅
I also love space and astronomy.
I wish Epic can open a office in India .. and I can join Epic at some point of my career without having to relocate to another country
would be nice to chat up to Tim at a company conference 😄
I met loads of people at unrealfest. But not Tim :(
This was 2019. It's a shame 2020 was online.
Epic Megajam theme announcement is more hype than Cyberpunk haha :D
Ahh I just cant wait
wake me up when it's time 😴
Set up a wake up timer in 15 mins
I am excited to make a devlog about my entry also :D
yeah I'd watch it
Thanks!
you got a YT channel?
Alrrriiiggghhtttyyyy last 10 minutes
I did a timelapse of my GMTK project a few months ago, it was dope
I dunno where to share tho, can I do that here? The YT channel
will there be a stream or just the topic being dropped?
stream
Stream
Stream
cool!
pop-pop-pop, triple kill
waiting for the stream also
@wintry nymph wassup
the link goes to Twitch ye?
Ya here too haha :D
SO EXCITED
Yes!
Jam idea. You get a hint of the theme at the beginning then work off that. At the end of the jam the theme is revealed and you are judged on how close you were :p
soooo we counting down or what
Yo guys, what is the setup to get an assembla depot this time around?
5 minutes to go
🕚
soooooo close ^.^
What does Assembla do?
source control
It's going to be a 2 hour stream?
Stream is up
That will be very stressfull
Twitch
Certainly it will not be, it's a chance to flex your creative muscles
Wb YT
Do they even do it on yt? It's normally twitch
often both simultaneously
Its announced in roughly 30 mins
Uh.. commercials... Lol. jkjk
Bruh I think its gon be 2 hours
We don't know for sure but jam kickoffs are typically 30 minutes.
Of course, they have a lot of guests this time so it might run a little longer.
lol why did they start the jam before the theme
Ikr
Read their facial expressions to infer the theme...
I think the theme is 80s
game jam: "Make all your own assets!" kitbash: "Use all our assets!"
TBF, They encourage you to source assets, but ofc they can't score them.
where'd you get this from?
That's too specific. It's always a concept.
based ob the jam thumbnail
the delorean
the cassete
It probably wouldn't be 80s but rather, a vague time reference.
Lol they'd probably win...
What's kitbash 3d
well. im gonna rip that story of a marine platoon time travelling to ancient rome, obvs
just meshes and materials
Like a crappy quixel
But with more meshes
How does speedtree work?
I tried using the free versuon
For ue4
its a bit peculiar they dont come with a demo map
so was the theme anounced?
There is no free Kitbashes
The node tree did nothing
They all cost 200$
there used to be a small free one
I guess this is a good time to build my empty project, eh?
No theme yet?
Pretty sure the stream will be 3 hours
Turn on your mesh distance fields, set your RHI's to dx15 🙂
the stream is on twitch only?
Yes
I don't see it on youtube yet
my game is just going to be off that guy that presses the next slide button
dose anyone know theme
Will be announced soon
when?
Next person to ask theme, let's make one up and see if they build for it...
be patient.. they announce it at the end mostly
I didnt understand
oh god what fresh hell is this
oh i got it lol
That picture of the crowd on the right didn't age well...
yikes
anyone have problem inviting people to assebla team?
who thought this was a good idea? I mean the target demographic...
what was a good idea?
the enterprise motivation lady 🙂
It's good information...
you don't want to get a job in the games industry?
She talks a lot of sense ngl
oki I guess this is a bit more relevant now 🙂
Zero masks in those pictures.
they could have photoshopped them lol
I forgot there was a pre-COVID era...
I thought that was pretty obvious
Yeah it was a whole different world back then mate
This preamble is so long I learned Blender since it started
we actually left houses to work
damn, you're efficient
Like, for making smoothies?
lmao
TBH I only learned how to make a cube
i like the speech
That's all that you're supposed to make.. Default cube only.
And we don't corrupt the default cube with distortions.
I wish I actually spent time learning blender, instead I watched hundreds seasons of different shows lol
thats it u can start a tutorial series now
Jesus christ it's Mel-Bourne!
oooh shit, we've got a badass over here
111 chapters
Reminder: the theme will be announced at the end of the live stream.
😦
I wish my country was more popular man
I'll make sure to post here and update the channel topic as soon as the theme is announced.
which country you from?
why do you need your country to be more popular?
I wish that Jesse guy was as positive as Renne 😄
I think they were saying there was no IGDA chapter in their country
I wish my country was less notorious
that camera is actually hella cool, kinect on stereoids, hope iClone supports it later on
Yeah it looks pretty neat.
2h
At the end of the stream, like they always do.
I forgotgen
Is this real life contenders
yeah preach
What a bunch of
The stream length depends. Sometimes it's only 30 minutes, others it's 1 hour or more.
Nice guys
how exciting is that
Love epic

The theme is what is the theme
"waiting"
Everyone is excited
Practice breathing exercises.
!ask Will this year's theme be good for horror games?

Don't break my heart, Manny.
aww a cat
!ask Tell us the mega jam theme
@small fern, :8ball: Concentrate and ask again.
I thought I did
whats the difference
!ask What is Mega Jam 2020 theme?
@small fern, :8ball: Outlook good.
that sounds like a weird theme
lol
I thought this was jam by epic, not by microsoft
Virtual reality is fully immersive while Augmented reality is iron man style widgets on top of real world.
Microsoft is sponsoring prizes for the Is This Real Life category.
it's advertisement for sponsors
That's how I would describe it
If I had an XR capable headset, I would have entered one. But I got a rift s. So I'm just entering a VR title
or it just Fantasy
wtb theme - have $5
Over 1.1k viewers on Twitch. Wow.
theme is microsoft - recreate the windows 7 desktop background and make it better with water
Lmao if the theme is covid or pandemic related imma kms
Cool. How are you doing healthwise mate?
@urban meteor the hospital discharged me with acute appendicitis because I apparently had covid
At home with the strongest antibiotics known to man
ouch
Alive, appendix hurts a lil
I hope you feel better soon
But ready af for the jam
Damn bro

The theme will be announced at the end of the stream :3
Hell yeah! Like the sound of that
hope the theme is good
amen
I'm hoping it is something I can justifiable use a picture of my dog for honestly lmao
use it anyway
Dogs are always welcome, I'm sure.
for us
yupp
The judges would appreciate any cute animals included.
Would be dog being a VA count as a team of 2??
Jkjk
I'm just being a goof with that one
Reminds me of Silent Hill 2's dog ending.
yeah, ya done goofed lol
"It was you all along!"
My buddy joked that the theme should be neko girls in thigh highs
Best ending
did they not release the theme yet?
Soon noodles:3
Soon™️
God, if the theme is food imma cook and do 3d renderings of my dishes
Same
Fun fact, also a professional cannabis chef who specializes in Asian noodles basically
please not a food theme
1000 people in 6 days 23 hours from now: I wish I had just 1 more hour to finish my game
i don't have the assets for that T_T
But the pandemic shut me down with events closing down in the US 😭 So, that's how I ended up following my game developer dream
water, clouds, chaos, niagara... how am I supposed to pick one of these features for the jam man, can't learn them all this weekend 🤯
it'll be a souls-like game but the characters are pastries
kinda same
I can't even run 4.26 because somehow its broken on linux
Theme incoming. I'm ready.
Me toooooo
Since I'm a solo developer I'll be using a handpuppet instead of Assembla. "What's that Mr Pixels, more volumetric fog?, ok if you say so Mr Pixels"
i got so much free time with all the things shut down
Hey guys, can someone send my a link to the stream? 👀
lucky you
Another tip: I highly recommend creating the itch.io project for your game as soon as possible.
Check the pinned messages. Someone once submitted 2 seconds before the deadline.
Still holds the record for closest call.
drop the theme while lewis isnt here lol
oh noes, I wanted to include some megascan assets, need to check out butler now 😅
cubes and spheres it is!
are we have to use houdini?
I want the Houdini category tho
But I think I shouldnt waste any time on it
If you didn't start learning it prior
It can be a VR game right?
Would stick to your usual modeling software
For this gamejam I think I will do an open world RPG
I believe you
alright, these motivational speeches are going too far 😄
i cant say what i will do without the theme
release the theme!! ❤️
Will mostly be cubes
Lol since I'm on bed rest, I literally have 120 hours to dedicate to army of one
Unlessy appendix bursts lmao
Yikes, I'm nervous for you dude
I'll love lol
should you be sitting this one out?
Live*
You should also love yeah
Gotta finish the game even if I'm dead ngl
will we need to list all the assets we made ourselves and ones that were premde
I love myself enough since I still have like a oz of exotic I am gonna smoke during this game jam
samee
Yes, lost all premades
List*
You will not be judged on them, remember thay
That*
Even if you made them yourself, list them
The jam scoring is only for assets made during the jam
It's coming.
Theme: It's been a long time, but we're not done yet.
It's Been A Long Time, But We're Not Done Yet
Hmm
wth is this theme lmao
dope dope
VERY GOOD THEME
@small fern much better 😉
This actually lines up perfectly with a fever dream of a game I had
VERY UNDERSTANDABLE
Wait what is the theme of the jam
this is the theme
that's the theme!
rheme its been a long time but we are not done yet
Well guys. Blunt is sparked, time to get to work boys
playtime of the game should require 6 hours
Someone break it down word by word haha
i totally get it
Also, totally shouldn't be smoking with covid, buuuut
Could someone give any ideas ?
the theme is its been a long time, but we're not done yet
A game about jam kickoff stream, which can not get to the theme because of the large number of sponsors.
If anyone wants a good idea, think of adding a prior story to your game that starts you in the middle of your journey
Yh that works
Like work your lore hard
Anyway guys, I'm off to get some work done, gotta hit my whiteboard
Already finished and submitted my project 😎 GL guys
I'm thinking like a battle arena where objectives just keep coming, and we'll see how long you last
lmao
Lolz
Yeah I believe you
well that seals it, I'm def doing the guy pressing the slideshow button - game. I'll call it... Slidemaster
Or a game where you are almost done after a long run
It's been a long time, but we're not done yet
like no idea with that theme. I might pass.
"Next Slide Sir"
I mean this theme is tailormade for roguelikes no?
it's sooo early, you're giving up already?
come on dood
@lime crane See if you get a good idea in the next 24h
truly
I never have a good idea. haha
I'm just going to remake Daikatana
that's the thing about ideas, they don't have to be good at the start, but over time, and a little bit of polish, you can make it good
what about a first person narative game about a guy that was lost but is still trying
to find his friends
I'm looking for a team to work with. any available?
go to lfb
wrong channel?
lfg
ok
#game-jam-lfg check here
OK, so how do we set up teams? We need categories like, Age, experience in industry, Overall skills (modelling, coding, effects, tech art, design...etc...)
What?
gosh i need ideas
Depends on your ELO for matchmaking.
this theme hit me in the face like a brick ngl
it's good to have challenges once in awhile
How about a game about 2020. It's been a long year, but it ain't over just yet. Going out with a bang, no doubt.
oh don't worry i'm not complaining, i'm just tired from work, trying to come up with a few game ideas
at least your appendix didn't burst, amirite @languid sparrow ?
yet
😆 😆 😆
first thing that popped to my mind is Metallica Nothing Else Matters
I will probably not find use for this, but maybe it will inspire some of you here
you saved my melting brain
any good game ideas????
Just add forest fires, a deadly disease, President election, and maybe a astroids?
My brain hurts now
oof, this theme
for real
me either
going out with a bang this year with that gamejam theme
You can just start the game on the last level
Brain Dead
Like halo 3, "finish the fight"
Low-key wanna join in with some people for the game jam, but I feel like I lack experience. I've done stuff with blueprints, I know C++ and I mainly do 3d stuff + texturing and what not, but I don't want to let people down
and i am just 13 and have to go to school
Oh no, I'm mostly afraid I'm make others fail xD Since it's a group thing you know?
Aside from doing like one course on the UE4 docs page, I'm completely new to using the engine
The theme of the jam is easy, is about submitting an unfinished project to the jam
I can not think anything
bruh
zombie game?
Is EA sponsoring it then?
I kind of have an idea for a short third-person game but.. new lmao
endless zombie game?
Cyberpunk 2077 is entering the jam
WHAT
Okay! Got my idea done, time to start prototyping
Random question actually
this stupid theme!!!
Desperately trying to avoid Coronavirus with this theme 😄
Can I have game testers aka my lil sister?
i don't see why not
nothing in the rules on the itch page say anything about testers being prohibited or adding to your team in any way
Litty, I gotta be careful about playing VR with my appendicitis atm
for sure
But lord is this idea perfect, y'all will see when it's done 😈
looking forward to it man, GL HF 👍
Fatboy SLim?
This theme tho
I really want someone to do melting and stretched clocks, because it would be a long time

@carmine kindle had that though
I actually thought of making a grandfather clock with limbs into an endless runner :(
the theme is a good excuse to submit something broken and unfinished
GameJamSubmission.JPEG
make a model of kitty kallen
