#game-jam-chat
1 messages · Page 4 of 1
I had to hide some placeholders that were mostly gonna be there as background details, but I’ve got my game done and uploaded, just gotta make the video
There’s like two small mechanics that I think would really make the design of my game click better, but I couldn’t get them done before it was time to do my soft code freeze to work on art
Can anyone tell me - do submissions for the megajam require the Unreal Engine splash?
No
Some good old fashioned bu.. öhöm features..
That's amazing
please help
I have packaged my project
and ziped it
and sended it into a friend to test first
but in his game the materials doesnt load!!
does anyone know a fix?
im using ue5.0.3
I had this happen to a couple of my materials after packaging. In my case those materials were applied to nanite meshes but didn't have the nanite check box enabled in the material details. Nanite also doesn't work with translucent or masked materials so ensure anything you're using with it is opaque
ok thanks for that!
I think yeah its on static mehes that use nanite or something
but the thing is that in my pc packaged project all looks good
but when i sended it to my friend he sees it wrong
and that confuses me
so now im cooking everywhting haha
Is anybody having a ridiculously hard time uploading their game with Butler.
Try this @tropic wing
hmm, I also had an error message appear that let me know a specific material needed to be enabled for nanite. The material already had nanite enabled but I still needed to go in and click apply. So it could be something like that.
ok so all the materials that are in a nanite mesh need to have "nanite on" on the material properties?
yes, they should automatically be turned on but I found that a few materials hadn't been applied
for our video should it be edited or raw gameplay?
It can be raw 🙂
You can always add a "trailer" to your page later 🙂 We just require raw gameplay for submission
oooh ok thankyou thankyou
ok, let me try it, thanks!!!
@rain lotus mayhaps ask here if you did not do so already.
I'll ask now, thanks!
I'm ready to package but I am getting this, please help!
ah feels good to have finally submitted
@fleet finch I fixed it thanks to what you said!!!
Thanks a lot!!
It was enabling use nanite in the material properties!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcmJ7HFXs_c - could use a few more days 🙂 the assets are all default or markeplace
3 hours left ish, 68 entries 👀
It's gonna go up super fast now
68? I put mine in last night and it said mine was number 111?
there are over 200 atm i think
yeah might need to refresh... im seeing 247 entries currently
Or maybe still private?
250 odd entries so far
high res footage of my rubbish has finished processing 😄

Are they different videos?
one is the trailer and the other is link to the jam entry page
Epic staff I believe, Tina and friends
did you guys encounter such an error in terrain material?
Hi, this is the game a friend and I developed for the 2022 Epic MegaJam. Feel free to drop by and leave some feedback. It's a homage to Stardust. 🙂
From what I've seen in another Jam I entered into, public judging, where you finished in order bears no resemblance to reality, so don't take anything to heart lol
is it ok if the video is longer than 1 minute?
Ah yes, exactly what I wanted my menu to look like in the packaged project https://i.gyazo.com/72ae18474df01d96f4b760b0c01ba13e.png
I hope so, mine is over 2 mins?
I believe that due to the amount of videos they must watch that 1 minute is a courtesy/logical limitation.
And my game can be played in about 5 lol.
Well you want people to try it out not watch it. 😉
true true 😄
anyone have the code to spawn a projectile from an enemy and have it fire towards the current location of the character
Anyone know how to import reallusion animations to unreal mannequin
I don't have video editing nouse, energy, skill, tools? so has to be 1 take.
Finally done with the game, our team pushed so hard the last few hours, got work in the morning. But managed to get it complete 😄
@elder rune try OpenShot, free video editor good enough for simple stuff https://www.openshot.org/
OpenShot is an award-winning free and open-source video editor for Linux, Mac, and Windows. Create videos with exciting video effects, titles, audio tracks, and animations.
thanks
Yeap, I can relate. We finished at 3a.m ourselves.
Ye, 2am here and our other teammate its 3am
At least I start work around 10, and not 8 in the morning
yee 4:30 am on 3 hours sleep 🙂
I was up until 4.30 am overnight
Funny thing is, I took Tuesday off for the gamejam as well
And I make games at work, just nonstop
10.55am now, been up an hour, doc appt soon lol
anyone know why my ai are broken in pakaged project but not in editor omg
@elder rune You can also try Shotcut which is free and easy to use. https://shotcut.org/
Hmm, any special stuff for you geometry? We used houdini engine and had to bake everything down to normal meshes to get everything properly working
Cheers Evan
nahh nothing special, ai are all spawning at 0,0,0 in package
This happened to me during my final project at CGMA. Half the AI wouldn't work in the packaged project. I had to go back, delete them and reconfigure them again. Not suggesting you should do the same btw.
ahh okok rip well hopefully i dont have to do that
Although all spawning at 0,0,0 is new to me. 🤷♂️
It's nowhere near where I want it to be but my 2022 Epic Megajam entry is in. It still needs a lotta work, it's barely even game at this point, but it's got good bones. Doubt it'll win any categories but I've got a neat project to continue working on now.
Download & play on Windows for Free:
https://gagelara.itch.io/astrolabe
now to try and build...
My game is embarrassing after seeing the quality of entries lol, but I don't have the skills of you lot 🙂 Almost the entire map is take cube, scale, scale scale lol
If I manage to create a new video, where do I edit the URL? Can I revisit the "Submit your project" link?
it's not how skilled you are, it how much you improved through the challenge
preach. I legit entered this after only just finishing a c++ in ue course, total experience < 1month 😂 but I feel like I learned so much this week
@elder rune go to the submission page and click "edit this submission" also be careful not to hit "remove this submission" by mistake
True, I blew up a giant fly in this game, never done that before!
3d games are complex, one person team can only do so much
Edit in submission for footage, and in dashboard for trailer
@elder rune
Where do i see that though
AsAboveSoBelow 🙂 lol (by Loucsam)
Ok wait me a minute
@elder rune
For footage: https://itch.io/jam/321654/add-game/1683882
For trailer: https://itch.io/game/edit/1683882
it is just on itch? not in the submission?
There are two place. One for footage, and one for trailer
ok i got it thanks 🙂 I thought i had to somehow go back through the submission link
oh
even more confused then
Why confused?
didn't know there were 2
Hey Guys ! My entry for this Mega Jam ! Hope you like it !
https://itch.io/jam/2022-epic-megajam/rate/1687892
hmm i can't scroll up this page anymore
I'm gonna show off mine as well then: https://itch.io/jam/2022-epic-megajam/rate/1687882
Why not? I'm still able to do it
I wonder how much entries this years. Last year was more 500
@young kayak I wonder why people explain the theme in the way "above similar to below". It's nice game though
build errors 😢
@static wind I am not an English native speaker ... so "above, similar to below" was the way I interpreted the theme. Maybe a native could interpret it in another way.
There are a lot of other submissions do same as you, bro. I think it's mean "because something on above, that make happen on below". But I may wrong too
Like question / answer
ok my build keep failing, no idea how to resolve 😂 uh oh
this happen to me many year before. there is no way to resolve it instead of starting fresh again. that why I always package in every state of project.
so that year I can't submit my project but i learn from that
i'm super new to this lol, so we'll see
apparently its an issue with unreal learning kit?
those are the only assets throwing errors but I've deleted them from my game lol
anyone know?
I have the same, something error with my asset and i delete it, but it wont work. even in my case it just said error. i was really hate unreal engine in that time
@fluid agate Good luck to you if you can resolve it. If not, take that experience and good luck next year
i think I may have fixed it 🤞 had to find the files directly and delete, since unreal couldn't load them in the first place. let's pray
Merge is live, FINALLY https://youtu.be/vcYuQ-rm7W0
Probably about the most complex game jam game I have done. Tough one.
Just posted my submission to the megajam! Best of luck to everyone! https://xyz38q.itch.io/planetoid-td https://youtu.be/VJw9EaoKPsM
Just posted our game on Itch.io! https://drwidgit.itch.io/the-above-and-the-below
Are we supposed to also register anywhere else in addition?
you'll want to put it on the submission page too
I can't find the link!
😄
npnp!
Man that's the hardest game jam game I ever made. I'm going to bed. Good luck everyone!!!!!!
Woah that looks way different than on my AMD card. Is there a vendor specific raytracing thing going on? I heard the 6900 XT was good at raytracing too that's why I got it 🥲
Oh man, I was so confused. The first time I clicked on submit, it took me to the whole itch upload page. I hadn't realized you had to click on the submit button a second time to then send the entry to Epic. This was my first Jam, so maybe this is standard fare, but a bit confusing!
Nice concept with the characters saying the polite thing on the top and their inner thoughts on the bottom! Was a bit hard to read until I realized you can just read the bottom ones left to right also, I was turning my head upside down for like 20s lol. Nice idea with the puzzles too matching the top lights to the bottom. The character animation with the hands sticking out while walking was a bit distracting but it looked good overall. Liked the little intro anim sequence too. Congrats on the entry!
Congrats do you have a game page? I want to give the puzzle a try
Thanks so much for the feedback! Yeah, the animation is a little rough around the edges, really just the default manny anims retargeted to the character with a bit of cleanup. Thanks for playing!
Panic mode, ACTIVATE!
Hello. Can the game page be updated later after submitting?
yes
The controls felt really good and I like how you don't have to read instructions before starting the game. The planet's material is really nice too. I love Civ so this one piqued my interest last time you posted about it. I have a couple cities and monuments should I just be trying to build more stuff to get more resources kind of like an idle clicker? Relaxing music too fits the game perfectly 🙂
How do I set up SDK for windows
It won’t let me package
What is launch on menu
?
@brazen surge Could you try my submission and give me some feedback?
Thank you so much for the kind words! 🙂 For the time being it's definitely an idle game type vibe. I plan on continuing work on making it a lot more engaging in the near future though.

That was what I needed to do to get UE5 to package for windows.
Also try getting this https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/vs/. Select all the said things on this page https://docs.unrealengine.com/4.26/en-US/ProductionPipelines/DevelopmentSetup/VisualStudioSetup/
Woahhh great game! You integrated the theme perfectly nice one! Brilliant idea having to coordinate the two players on top and bottom. It really feels like that american ninja game show especially the ragdoll physics when you smash into an obstacle and fall into the drink. Controls feel pretty good although I didn't like how it auto jumps when you hold space. I'm stuck at 46% on the stage one (after the tutorial) can't get the bottom guy to make the jump. Liked the dancing anims on the title screen btw kinda gets you hyped lol. Congrats on the submission it definitely stands out
she's up! https://youtu.be/DgfuuVo8WUw
My MegaJam Submission: ShardTrek!
finally
@fluid agate Lucky you 😉
hahaha i know
Watching my file upload and counting down the minutes... I just wish I had enough time to fix one bug.
got my game all submitted: https://youtu.be/4TuQK-OZzmw
Short gameplay demo of a small growth management game made for the 2022 Epic Mega Jam! Take over a small post-apocalyptic farm that produces strange, reality-bending plants, and do your best to keep the corporations busy fighting each other so they don't buy you out.
The theme of the jam was "As Above, So Below," and much like you must manage t...
feel like my video making is absolutely dreadful
but then, I did this solo as a way to test where I need work, so mission accomplished there I guess?
Well done everyone. It's been a long week - take care of yourselves.
Already looks sick from the title screen! Had a hard time hearing the narration during the intro because of volume levels or mixing but it was gorgeous, those zombie guys on the ground with the red eyes left an impression on me. Pause with escape actually works little details like that feel good. The slice animation feels a bit sluggish and strange how it always goes forward no matter which way you're facing. Shaders are absolutely gorgeous and the character design is great despite being a potentially generic samurai the combo of the mummy wrap and one glowing red eye make him feel unique. Also like his animation running with the sword up when close to enemies makes you feel ready for combat. Combat itself is confusing I couldn't really tell if I was doing damage to the enemy, or if I was taking damage until I died. I ended up feeling like I should just run away from them. The sound design could use some work to give more feedback during combat. Lighting is awesome, great atmosphere. Congrats on the entry! I could easily see this being developed into a full release
@brazen surge so you are go through try all submissions here and give a feedback, do you? 🤣
oh my I forgot to put my name in the zip file should I delete and resubmit?
oh god how to upload greater than 1GB
@lyric harness you should install visual studio and do this https://docs.unrealengine.com/4.26/en-US/ProductionPipelines/DevelopmentSetup/VisualStudioSetup/
I dont know how it works at all so I can't help, but thats related to uploading big projects
won't run on my computer lool
Awesome game the graphics and music were on point, loved the controls and first person camera reminds me of Colony Wars Vengeance a game I loved. Good use of lighting colors to help you figure out what's going on! It was hard to tell when you were damaging the little robots attacking your base which confused me a bit on what was going on. Was also hard to tell if/when they damage your ship, maybe if the UI had some kind of shake reaction or something for feedback it would help? I like how the music gets more intense as the levels progress! Sorry for the scattered notes but great submission congrats 🙂
im screwed
thanks so much for the feedback! its very much appreciated :))
ooh, @brazen surge mind taking a look at mine?https://itch.io/jam/2022-epic-megajam/rate/1687559
Thank you!!!I just installed it and restarted computer. Time to retry package
Do I need to have it open while I package? Or just installed?
@lyric harness What is Roy?
Nice one feels really comfy could use some music to go with it. Controls and character animation feel good. I like the simple instructions just enough to get started. Great UI! Would be nice to get some feedback on whether you got a letter right or not without having to drag all the letters in to find out. I like the riddle concept even though they always make me feel dumb lol. Good submission! Liked the attention to detail with the UI (which is pretty btw), showing the AI play during demo, and character select
@lyric harness You need tick same as this to install SDK and requirement for Unreal to able package your project
Do I need to have visual studio open while I package or just installed?
@lyric harness No, you just installed and do package inside Unreal
IT COMPLETED WITHOUT THE SDK WARNING. OMG!!!
Where is it now lol
I saved to a folder
Not there
@brazen surge much appreciate with love. ❤️ thank you
where you choose to save when you package 😵💫
I feel like I learned a lot this week
same
I made a folder on desktop. And saved there. Not there
@lyric harness try to package again and see where is it
@lyric harness
package sorry i type to fast
@lyric harness when do start package it let you choose where to save
Right. I chose a place. And when I look there. It’s not there
i need to see package logs to see what happen
i can't help because that is depend on your action not because system error
dm me
This is the one I was most hyped for glad to see you submitted! Just a heads up the first time I ran this game the floor was invisible (I'm on AMD 6900 XT) but after I restarted it was fine 🤷♂️ Lmao I love the detail "you might want to crouch to get more reach with that chainsaw". Game looks gorgeous. Great dynamic lighting is this UE5? Chainsawing stuff besides the blender is satisfying too 😄 I only wish some other materials like glass in the bathroom reacted to it too. This game has serious meme potential I could see streamers eating this up might even go viral lol. Holy crap the stealth concept with x-ray to avoid the neighbors seeing you is funny turns it into a real game. Love how the alex thing whines if you hit it. Omg the bowling ball lol love the variety. I've gotta go to sleep but will have to come back to this tomorrow to keep playing past level 2. Congrats on the submission nobody who plays it will forget it 🙂
Nice UI btw
Despite all the setbacks, i was able to submit, altough way worse than what i hoped it to be.😂
Thanks for all the people who tried to help with the problema!
If someone wants to try it, please be aware it runs just above 30fps with rtx 3080😂
First game ever made, I had fun making it with new people I've never met until this event
It was hard, but it was worth it and I loved every creative step we made
Thank you so much! Funny is something we were going for so I'm happy to hear it. Yep ue5, lumen, nanite and chaos ftw.
Do you need to submit something on epic games site after you upload to itch? Instructions unclear D;
i think you just have to make sure its on both itch and the epic megajam itch page
It might be one small leap for a frog, but it's one giant leap for frogkind https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61sH65Z1xjc
It might be one small leap for a frog, but it's one giant leap for frogkind
thanks @blazing quiver !!
UPLOADED AND DONE I'm FREE
haven't had sleep in 24hours
going to bed whole team did hardcore sweat we are so pleased
Can't wait to peeps play the game and leave comments
dances then falls dead asleep
I NEED 1 minute
congrats everyone!
@brazen surge if you don't mind i want to put your feedback on my game page. thank you again, shim ❤️
Well, I forgot to rename my zip file. There goes my submission down the drain
can we edit a submission? I forgot to add a link to a YouTube video 😦
Mine is windows.zip
Congratulations!
@lyric harness I'm so sorry
COME ONNNNN
Nebdhdhdkjdhah she s TSS cry dog da b da
Pluurtyggfegjgtyjkfrfbhtaftgedddrd
@lyric harness Calm down, bro. I was in your situation before
@lyric harness I was unable to submit my project a few year ago. And I learn from it to do better after that
@lyric harness So I really understand how do you feel now
I still want to turn it in!!!!!
@lyric harness But you know time is over. We can't change that
CHANGE THE TIME!!!!
LET US SUBMIT!!!!
Dammmitttt. I haven’t slept in a week!!!!!!!!
LET ME SUBMIT!!!!!
anyway to submit it?
@lyric harnessdw just sell the game
Was there a strict file name on the download file, if so, oops lol
IM SOOO ************************* PISSED
Everyone was. Not only you
I don’t own the assets
ok, doc appt, good luck all
THI IS MESSED UP
you got from Megajam sponsers ?
Yup. I changed my filename correctky but itch.io's butle changed it automatically. I can only see it now that I am downloading my own game
Take a rest. I believe you will be fine after this. Give you a time. I was in your position before
can we edit submissions after closing?
LET US SUBMIT!!!!!
nothing is gonna change 😢
LET US SUBMIT!!!!!!!!!
Nobody here has the authority to do that
Where are h r mods
Even the mods can't do that
you realise if you get their attention they'll probably just ban you for being a spamming idiot, right?
Yea, we missed it too. 1 whole week, day job, then every waking moment on the game jam.
We even started getting all the things ready early to beat the time. All the filling of forms got us late for submission.
This is disappointing. We'll submit a day early next year...
budget your time better, calm down, read the rules
there are no submissions allowed after deadline for any reasons
This is not official Unreal Engine discord if you dont realise
@lyric harnessdw man theres tons of other game jams in itch io
good attitude, hope you have better luck next year
as far as I know you can submit early and just update your submission as you go
you can edit all the submission form info after as well
I upload and I was on team member data
Hopefully next year's theme would be easier
All I can say is: don't package your game during the final hour. It's not worth the stress.
Good luck to everyone who completed and submitted a game. ❤️
i should have timed myself and gave full attention
Atleast you learned something. Even in regular projects, you should periodically test a packaged build
or just maybe have everything submitted early and update your submissions incrementally
Congratulation to all. Theme was really difficult this year in my opinion. I didn't made it too. But np next year I am better.
I made sure to package every night before passing out
AND USE SOURCE CONTROL!
there's probably a good reason why incredibuild was a sponsor
Same lol. My eyes are burning rn from lack of sleep
Btw what type of game yall made
And you are not Elon musk
yes ofc
it's a tower defense
it took me well over a day to even start, the theme was cool, but it leant itself to overscoped ideas pretty easily
are the people that missed the deadline going to post their game page?
I'd still look at it
yea I had to pull the scope back a couple times, this is only the 3rd game jam I've done I think, but that is def a common theme
yeah and this theme in general pretty easily makes you think of "dual" concepts, which immediately means you're potentially doing twice the work depending on the idea you come up with
see, you can still share it, don't get too heated, hope you feel better
anyone else here from the uk?
nearly 5:30 and i'm off to bed 😄
I had to rage for a minute. But I think I’ll be ok…
sorry everyone!!!
For my outrage
This is my first epic jam. And I was seconds from submission
Seconds
I've been lurking silently during this gamejam, but I gotta say it, you pulled some incredible looking games, people
I'll plug my game and I'll be playing the ones that some of you posted for a while https://itch.io/jam/2022-epic-megajam/rate/1687474
Posting our jam entry demo here for people to check out if they want! https://youtu.be/H76JMFp7aU8
Developed in 7 days as part of the Epic Megajam 2022, a gravity defying puzzle game inspired by Portal
I hope you all had as much fun as I did
Trailer for the Cat Fission Scientist's 2022 Epic Megajam entry Quantum Foam!
https://partlyatomic.itch.io/quantum-foam
@lyric harness i'm happy when you calm down. good luck and plan better next time 🍀
Heck yeah, another Portal love letter
where's the link?
Thank you and sorry there for the outburst. Y’all knows how it is
I should probably add that to the video eh lol https://vesperduck.itch.io/vertigo
Yeah, that's a great idea, downloading right now
Made it in with just a few minutes to spare, but I managed to complete my game.
https://youtu.be/wMg-Gl9fD1U
Unreal Engine - Epic Megajam 2022
As Above, So Below.
A hidden object maze game. Explore the wreck of the RMS Hermetica, a steampunk sailship. Find hidden keys and bulkhead wheels to progress and complete the game within a time limit.
Made in 7 days by myself only for the Army of One category.
Game available for free on itch.io
https://mken...
Though be warned, the game isn't very kind to GPU's lol
There's a lot of reflections...
Did you do the ray tracing?
Modifier, I mean.
Light it up? I think.
I think that's right
I only submitted mine for army of one. The other modifiers were all a bit tough to go for.
Nice, good luck! That's got the best prize
Thanks, fingers crossed but I only just scraped through finishing in time and didn't manage to do everything I'd hoped for. Still I'm just proud of managing to get through it. I tried once before and didn't make complete it in time last time.
I know that feeling, I haven't slept in about 30-something hours in the last sprint to the finish line, we submitted in like the last 10 minutes
I had an hour's nap while I downloaded the SDKs and .net framework to let me package in UE5, but otherwise I haven't slept since... ummm, tuesday? I'm not really sure anymore.
lol time to sleep, I would totally sleep right now but the adrenaline of that last minute submission
I got stuck after the first chamber 😦
Exactly, same here. I'm still a bit wired.
but it looks great!
Stuck in terms of bug stuck, or figuring it out stuck? lol
the world needs more portalesque games
And thanks!
figuring it out
mostly
Ah, well good luck then! I hear the third puzzle is near aggravating for people so far lol
I had some weird behaviors here and there, but well within the gamejam nature of this
I'll give it another go
So this year as much as entries last year, more than 500
Yeah, I definitely had my todo list of bugs to complete that didn't quite make it to the end product lol
After Jam close, we can't change or upload our game until it's finish
We still able to edit submission. But I don't know it's legit or not
https://petraefa.itch.io/abovebelow Been the longest 24 hours. So glad I was able to submit something. Congrats to all everyone that made it and good luck everyone.
as we all do, as we all do hahaa, I just finished it, it was great!
Awesome! Well thanks again for playing and glad you enjoyed it
no probs!congrats to the team
that was a very fun jam! learned heaps congrats everyone who submitted 🙂
I did Brackeys then this jam, I’m soooo tired
It really was a wild ride. The fact that I got more done with substantially less time than I had last year has me feeling pretty confident in how much I've grown
Yo what's that Elon Musk simulator game where you launch rockets as an astronaut?
I thought this was cool: A gource (git history visualizer) video of our game.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEnIYhoAh3A
Didn't finish in time 😢
if Ive put together a better video am I able to update it on itch or is that a nono?
You can update the video on the page but I don't think you can edit the video on your submission form
ty ty
Anyone else planned on continuing development on their jam prototype moving forward? I've personally become super enthusiastic about the potential Astrolabe has and plan on reworking it into something a lot more polished.
lol my first playable game & also first game jam
happy that I was able to submit at least
🙂
🙃
@dim stream Just visit your game as I go through entirely entries to learn. Honestly I skipping most interpret theme "as above so below" that ways. Too much entries have similar 😵💫
Thanks. I just wanted to actually finish & submit something . So I went for the most obvious & easiest interpretation 😁
I haven't checked out the other entries yet but I assume there would be other games with black/white visual interpretation as well
along with top/bottom level
Until now, there maybe one as I remember, but not pure black/white as you
going pure black/white took out the texturing & material work out of the equation
most of my time was spent figuring out how to actually make ancilarry systems for the game like spawning, menu system, game mode etc
had only a day or two to actually work on game mechanics & level design
otherwise I'd make my own props & character & add a few more levels
but glad you finally did it
i guess you are solo
@dim stream And i believe you have a good experience too
wait so did the submissions over 1gb get disqualified?
No, there no rule about size. Just over 1gb need tools to upload on itch,io
No actually there is a lot projects more than 1gb.
Looks great!
I have go through more than a half now. Because I want to learn how people do things
I learnt allot about UE5, especially physics(and how annoying they are!)
If anyone wants to play through my game and leave some feedback, I'd love to hear it:
https://rossua.itch.io/pastel-planets
I would like to make some performance improvements and clean up a few areas
this ended up being a game made in 2 days, I have a job and my first idea failed hard!
Hey, if someone interested, my game is here : https://jibus-gd.itch.io/mgm
its a first person puzzle game in the we were here style ^^
If you want to play a fun Active Ragdoll Sandbox heres my game!

hi everyone, I know that this question must have sounded times and times here, but... Can I update the submission entry (not the build, but the controls reference, categories, etc.) after the deadline?
Hey there!
Congrats to everyone who were able to submit in time, it sure wasn't easy!
If anyone wants to try our little narrative game and give us feedback it would be super appreciated! 😄
https://mrgooox.itch.io/backstage-shenanigans
It was hard to adequately set things up at 4-30 in the morning
love the gfx! will definitely check it out
Thanks! Our artist is insanely talented! 🤯
I think you can edit your submission on your game jam entry, just not your project. If that makes sense, I added in a YouTube link to my submission after it had closed.
:3 I love this community
I'll play your game at least same for you @jaunty orbit and anyone else who missed submission just link the itch page
haha nice 360+ submissions
There's 525
Little bit more than last time, love to see it. Feel sorry for the judges who have to play through all of them lol
I wish it was possible to build for browsers / WebGL 🙂
it was possible for 4.23 something i think
yeah, it make sense not to have in UE, but kinda sucks for gamejams
Terraformium
Wow that was a lot of fun!
My first Game Jam, I am actually pretty proud of what our team of 3 did in a week. Haha
Lots of really good entries.
Guys be sure to go back after you've rested and proof read your submission pages, update your gameplay videos. Get better screenshots, etc!!! You can change everything EXCEPT the game you've uploaded. Uploads are disabled
I finally did it after 2 years of game jams, I submitted my game on time (4 min before the deadline). I spent an absurd time doing the map/models and I did the mechanics in the last day. May look unfinished, but I'm proud of my self.
If you are interested in my game feel free to leave some feedback.
https://itch.io/jam/2022-epic-megajam/rate/1688151
Well done!
https://itch.io/jam/2022-epic-megajam/rate/1687834 Would love to get some feedback, also about the performance, is it running well? The environment is a bit on the heavy side
man, I just slept the sleep of ages - how are we all doing this afternoon?
Just made it to game jam in the last minute! some bugs here and there but here is the game guys !
https://itch.io/jam/2022-epic-megajam/rate/1688161
7 days of caffeine over dose's and an abusive amount of unreal engine 5, here be the final product!
Not the most fun day today for me, I have to catch up with all the work I so expertly hid from all week. 😅
also will be releasing full devlog and articles on how we made this in 7 days
this is looking great btw
how large was your team?
4 people
dude ur stuff looks amazing
2 x devs, 1 x tech artist, 1x 3D artis
Thank you bas! really glad you like it
I really wish someone would stream some playthroughs of the games, would be really fun to see, even if it's only a few of the more promising or interesting ones.
I've got a beefy rig but it's running smooth for me! I like the title text transition, was a nice seamless intro into the game. The animation kind of jitters when I push blocks, sometimes the character goes into the push anim even when outside the block. Also is there sound? I didn't hear any Foliage looks great the wind effect goes a long way to making things feel alive. How does the puzzle work, are you supposed to push the block off the cliff to pass it to the guy below? Looks like he was moving towards me to catch it but the block floated off the end it didn't fall down to him. I reset the game and tried pushing the blocks together in different combinations, or recreating the scene with the 3 guys standing at different levels the little hill below the plateau but couldn't figure it out. Lighting on the landscape looks really good I like how the sun casts shadows on all the trees and you can see the shadow move as they sway in the wind, you did a great job with the foliage placement feels pretty natural but enough of a clearing between the plateau and the rest of the world so you can see what is going down below 👍
Hey, guys!
Congrats everyone who was participating, we've done it 🥳
This was the first time doing solo submission for me, quite a run 😄
Built the core gameplay around NVIDIA Ray-Traced Caustic Effects, so RTX card is mandatory for playing.
Would love to hear your thoughts:
https://nariadchikov.itch.io/split-light
I'm scanning all of the submissions now
I'll be doing a stream of playthroughs this weekend at some point

Sweet
Playstation? doesn't mention windows?
I only watched the trailer but this is a really neat idea!
The puzzles look very interesting
Lol love the guy's expression on the title screen he looks stupified, fits perfect with the into text "Where am I?" Nice touch with the pause menu UI. Settings screen even changed the detail in-game without restart! I like the waypoint going up the stairs because they were long enough to build some suspense, but without it a low-attention player (like me) might have checked out. Having the dialog update as you go keeps you engaged. The platform timing was pretty good requires you to use run and focus but not too difficult either. The checkpoints were nice keeps the game moving along even if you fail so the player won't give up. The character's armor material looks really unique and good almost like chain mesh because of the noise + metallic combo. Character anims fit too I like the cartoony run it matches the character design. The models, shaders, and lighting all feel like they fit together. Nice music it's perfect! Feels epic but not overbearing, kind of comfy actually. Made me feel like the fetch quest I was on was actually important lol. I've never played a game like this before! After I delivered the wine I was confused for a second how to get back to the marketplace without a waypoint but it wasn't hard actually I didn't get lost in town on the way back. Game runs real smooth. Would be nice if you could see how much social points and money you have on the UI somewhere to keep track. Couldn't tell if the game had footstep SFX if so they are too faint to hear well. Got lost at the beginning of the race because either the waypoint didn't show up at first or I didn't see it, but then it showed up later. I got pretty far on the clouds trail but ended up getting stuck in a little hole before one of the flags. Congrats on the submission, very cohesive game and was fun!
Sorry message above meant for you
Would be nice if you could see how much social points and money you have on the UI somewhere to keep track.
It appears when you click TAB from the left
Also I don't have footstep sounds.
But thank you for that long and detailed feedback, I really appreciate it! :D
Hehe, thanks!
Will be happy to hear your thoughts if you play it 🙂
Thinking about post-jam improvements now, if the idea will get overall positive feedback, I might build the level editor for it!
the only addition I need is a Pink floyd soundtrack in the background
Actually, I wanted to add it as an easter egg, if you click on prism in the main menu 10 times or so 😅
But then thought about copyright issues 😂
I was able to get this running on a AMD 6900 XT, mouse was just a bit laggy but the graphics mostly matches your Itch screenshots. Cool concept reminds me a little of the mobile math-game Euclidea which I loved. The prism light effect is really cool! And the controls are intuitive, the prompt "click everything!" is all you need worked perfect. I'm normally not into puzzle games but this is relaxing and engaging. I know coming up with puzzles is tough especially on a time crunch so good job on that. Nice ambient music fits the theme well and the click sound fits nicely too! I like the variety in prism shapes they're not all triangles, keeps things interesting. By the third puzzle it did start to chug on my rig when when the large light bends hit so yeah you were right about RTX only 😄 Very unique game never played anything like it, even though it reminded me of Euclidea it's only a passing semblance, and Euclidea itself is a very unique game. Nice submission congrats!
Hi there again, Honorable Community.
Congrats to everyone who participated in this game jam. It is truly something. The games submitted become better every year!
Thank you very much for trying it out and writing that comment, reading it gave me a smile, happy that crunch time was worth it 😊
By the way, were color sensors working for you properly?
Have a friend with AMD card, for him it was not working 🥲Might be it depends on the model and drivers.
Haven’t seen “Euclidea” before, definitely will check it out!
What do you mean by color sensors? The purple ring at the end to finish a level? If so yes I was able to progress
my small game (my first solo in mega jams - yay) is here:
https://merekht.itch.io/the-tree-rhythmers
A rhythmic relaxation game with growing trees, dynamic weather and beautiful tunes.
I didn't have all week to work on it, so 60% of the scope were left out. Nevertheless, the game is out there for people to enjoy and for me to proud of!
Yeah, the ring thing 🙂
Cool, so it seems it depends on AMD card model, will investigate it further as a post-jam version of the game!
we also will be updating the game for post jam. We felt it was already too close to being a full game. 😄
i cant say i have ever had so much stress to the point my brain shut down around 11:30 last night while filling out the submission stuff. 😄
Haha, can feel you!
Congrats on finishing it 👍
Hey folks!
We’d like for everyone that created something for the jam can be part of the Epic MegaJam event. Projects added after the deadline are ineligible for prizing, but we’d still love for folks to see your game and include you in the sizzle during the results stream.
If you weren’t able to make it in time, please send a message to community@unrealengine.com with your game’s Itch.io page and we’d be happy to add it to the Epic MegaJam page.
@worn hamlet By when should we send this email?
Do you happen to know if we are allowed to edit the submission details (text, extra-categories, video link) after the deadline?
or will this be a disqualification?
Yes, you can edit everything except for the build itself- as that is locked until the judging period is concluded.
Really unique art style looks great! Even though it's 2D and not pixel graphics, it doesn't look like a mobile game or anything. Something about it is too sophisticated to fall into that trap, maybe the lighting. I alt tabbed for too long and when I came back the director was ranting about how where is everyone and the cast is below him pretty funny 😄 I tried using PS4 controller at first but the button prompts were meant for Xbox (press A). What's the keyboard equivalent? I didn't see controls listed on the Itch page. My PS4 controller ran out of battery so I'm charging it but will come back to this, looks charming though
As soon as you can really 🙂
horray to that, because populating that form at 3-4 am is hard...
Before I got this card I read this model has special raycasting abilities maybe that's it
Hey just a heads up I went to try your game and got this message, something must be wonky with the Itch algorithm
ohhh
emm well snap
the game is here
in the megajam
I had to register a new account couple days ago, and I'm updating the page today. Maybe thats why

Some gameplay from the Epic MegJam 2022 game I made with the them of As Above, So Below, where a Cyber-Dog named K9, traverses the above world using his skills to change to his alter ego in the 'identical' dark world below. Hopefully he can find a way to free his alter ego, doing good deeds in the above land.
I wrote to itch.io support. Thanks a lot for letting me know!
This is actually the first time I've ever finished any game jam and submitted an entry. I'd love to hear anyone's feedback on my cave game
https://loochlabs.itch.io/exit-whole
I would always get frustrated and quit.
I was dead set on submitting for this one.
Feelin kinda proud now that its all said and done
You should absolutely feel proud!
Thanks!
Thanks for trying! it's far from being complete, it's too buggy to complete the puzzle unless you know exactly how.
The key is to understand that each cube controls one of the robots below, you need to push it to the cliff for the robot to sense it. only then the robot follow the cube's movement. from there you use the 3 robots to help you deactivate the force field that keeps you on the mountain. that's the concept anyway, will be very hard to do with the current build, need a few more days of work 🙂
I though about the concept about 48 hours before the finish time, so had to cut a few corners 🙂
can anyone check our and rate our game: https://itch.io/jam/2022-epic-megajam/rate/1686761
Ohhhh that makes sense now pretty cool idea actually
Here's the game I made for the jam! https://doktor-plekter.itch.io/skatelantis
I barely did any real playtesting, so I'm curious/nervous to see how it runs for people 😅

From above, so below 🙂
i'll put in a few more hours to make a smooth running version
Does anyone know when Epic will announce the winners etc?
yeah, or even a month probably
heh, still waiting for my aws credits 🙂 so, announcing the winners, not holding my breath
It was something like 6 weeks last year
yeah probably this year it will take something similar
There's even more games this year though. 😀
Last year it was in 1.5 months
Heh, just read that you wrote the same 😅
Results would probably be announced on 27th October
a featured playthrough on the October 27th livestream
Does anyone know why my foliage from mega scans is turning white, ONLY after playing the built version. In editor it’s still a green lush tree. But not after playing the packaged version???
Hey, It's been a while since I participated in a megajam. A few years ago @pine fulcrum made these insane livestreams where he played every single game. Is this still a thing?
no idea
BTW CONGRATS TO ALL ENTRIES AND PARTICIPANTS!!! This year was EPIC. I couldn’t submit in time. But cest la vie. Next year I’ll BE BACK!!! Lol
❤️
#game-jam-chat message - You could still submit it, but you will not be eligible for rewards
Thank you. I put a lot of effort into my little seagull game. Wish you all the best next time.
Where!?
this message
why did auto-mod block that message.
posted email address I think? community@unrealengine.com
now its not blocked
strange
@digital fern, :8ball: My sources say no.

Maybe I should set the spam filter to alert us but not block.

and also possibly ready an antivirus?
Try it out and let us know 😬
nah I opened the archive and saw the readme
not even their game :\
definitely not executing that with a 10 foot pole
it requires a different kind of execution
Some creative looking games this jam! the last 30ish hrs of the jam was crazy for me. Knocked out right after I submitted and made sure everything works lol
https://itch.io/jam/2022-epic-megajam/rate/1687832 entered in stylized graphics modifier, relatively new to 3d so could use feed back on the art style (can you guess the influence lol)
https://itch.io/jam/2022-epic-megajam/rate/1688084 Our first project in unreal~
anyone know when the judges finish and winners are released?
Sometime in late October probably
Thank you!!! Honestly I wasn't in it for the prizes. I just wanted to share a fun game with all! I Just sent the email.
5 levels. All with unique styles.
if we submitted a project that was finished, but we wish we couldve added more to, is there a way to add an update without modifying the original build?
afteer the jam only I'm afraid @glass fossil
Reupload as a new project and its not part of the build
it's okay to update like screenshots and description though right?
It was fun to participate in this jam. First time my game for jam looks kinda finished. I mean it contains several complete levels, audio, menu, tutorial. Not just a bunch of buggy features as always 🙂
You can take a look
https://itch.io/jam/2022-epic-megajam/rate/1687765
Bad thing about Epic jams is no rating or ranking, whatsoever. We are just left to question what we did wrong, right, or could have done better.
If we go through the trouble of doing all this, and they even go through the trouble of playing them, they could at least write a sentence and share their thoughts.
would be nice if there was a category "community favorite" to encourage playthroughs + feedback
Yeah they don't do much at all except "These guys won. These couple were decent. The rest of yall suck." Is the usual winner announcement
Agree, that would be good
pour one out for all the teams that submitted a .uproject or a plain .exe 🥲
Anyone know when they're going to do the judging?
Last year we got the results about a month and a half after submission, I suspect it'll be roughly the same this year
Wow, that's going to be a long wait. Fair enough to go through 525 games, but after all the adrenaline of scrambling to finish the game now I don't know what to do with myself.
Here is ours

Two peeps did this, wanted to do more levels tough, some stuff we didn't get to finish due to work hours 😦
Probably gonna work more on this game, didint get to finish everything and level 2 was hard 😛

@winged void Your submission is last one. I was unable to seen your trailer before
@winged void Why do your team choose to do project this way? There have anything you feel good about it?
we all really liked jRPGs and so we started with that
our inspirations were Journey and another wolf game that you travel as...
i cant recall. Far North or something like that?
Yes, I see
and overall I think we did, but we didnt get the last cinematic and stuff
and we found a bug that stops you with a soft lock about 1/2 way in
:/ soooo whomp whomp. we tried xD
it was my first Game Jam anyway, we learned a lot about what to do and not to do next time. 😄
@winged void Yes, that was very great experiences right?
indeed! I had a lot of fun
wish i managed to get a submittable build 😢 always next time i guess
You can still submit if you finish it soon for the sizzle real they do.
@winged void One question that how do your team interpret the theme this year?
send in the video or something they said earlier
an Upper world and a layer world that require the balance of each other by sacrificing your former self to save them.
in the end the wolf who was bound to the dark realm and transformed into a being of light in the upper realm was granted access to the light world in the wolfs form for doing selfless deeds.
thats essentially the idea behind it anyway. because your always a wolf in the lower realm and always a being of light in the upper realm. Only in the end are you delivered to a field of grass to roam free.
Question: Does anybody know if it is allowed to post new builds after the deadline on the itch game page? Ofc I don't expect those to be considered for the Jam but was wondering if we are supposed to freeze all releases on the main page for the game.
@winged void Very complexity of interpret and deep behind story I can say. There no much theme express in game mechanic I guess
@agile marlin Yes and no, the upload button on itch was disabled for the jam
I see! Thanks! 🙂
Well the mechanics are not meant to be that way, this is more of a puzzle and story game. The puzzles however do reflect this as you have to solve puzzles in the upper world to advance in the lower world. If you are a fan of Journey, then you would probably be a fan of this, if not, then you would most likely not like it. 😄
@winged void I just though it's differently space. Don't know above or below if I don't know about story. And last scene in trailler, I'm sure your team take inspiration "Your Name" anime right?
I think we did mention that at one time yeah
not me personally but i think one of the other team mates
@winged void 🤣
?
wait
is that the anime?!
🤣
i thought that was from our game
then i noticed it was higher resolution and more details. haha
@winged void Yes, as I said. 😉
wow, that is funny
Where can we find the late submissions on the epic mega jam page? They said on here to send your itch to a community unreal email address
And they will post it
they wouldnt be published anywhere i dont think.
@worn hamlet said it will be posted to epic mega jam page. Not sure which page that is. Itch ? Or unreal . Com?
oh okay. cool. i assume thatll be after a few days whenever people send it in. 🤷♂️
anyway, later folks. It was fun
@lyric harness This is not official unreal discord. And they guide you to sent to "community unreal email address". So you should ask them in there
As I know there is no Epic MegaJam Page where accept entries outside the itch.io
I suppose this is Epic MegaJam page: https://itch.io/jam/2022-epic-megajam/entries
Thank you!
hi will unreal editor in fortnite be on xbox consoles or pc
No voting, there's a panel of judges that'll be playing through all of the entries
They must have a team of Epic minions, or Elves!

Last video for the jam. I woke up 4am on a Thursday and stayed up till 12pm on Friday when it was due. Been sleeping all Friday afternoon and just made this devlog on Saturday.

Minions, The Rise Of Epic. 😂
So yeah, how long the ratings will go on exactly?
Would be awesome if we could see the judges playing our games, get the feedback live without seeing the final rating they give.
Hey guys. We, Team Rocket, have submitted our game Bilateral to the gamejam.
w/ team @warped wren @warm star @timid barn
Was wondering if it's okay now to update our itch.io page with more gameplay instructions and guides, and also adding devlog ?
Anyone who has clarity regd this. please let me know. thanks.
Also check out our game and give us some feedback. It would mean a lot coming from the community.
I think reviewing 525 games in a row is a heroic deed already lol
Our Team encountered a problem with the page of itch.io. We don't know why the download link was removed from it.
Do you have any save ?
The project was submitted before the deadline, we tried it and everything was working well, but now we don't have the download link anymore...
Please help us it would be devastating after a week of hard work and lack of sleep to see it beeing ruined by a technical issue 😦
I think you will have to get in direct contact with the Epic people, there is likely nothing anyone can do in here, I don't think anyone is from Epic in here. Hope I am wrong though.
Okay thanks I try all since 2 day now....
I'm going to be playtesting submissions live if anyone is interested.

Anyone know a good .gitignore to start off a game jam project with? Trying to avoid Git LFS bloat and a lot of people with different experiences will be accessing the project directly who might not know to be super careful about what they check in. Was looking at this one which is more complete than what the Unreal Editor generates for you when adding git integration but not sure if there's a better one https://raw.githubusercontent.com/github/gitignore/main/UnrealEngine.gitignore
www.gitignore.io is always the best place to start
just input windows, unreal engine, visual studio, vscode, rider
Woah this is awesome thanks!!
https://www.twitch.tv/loochlabs found a streamer playing submissions 🙂
I had a ton of fun playing entries on stream today. Thanks for anyone here who dropped by
We'll do this again soon (tm)

You can download our game using this link : https://wetran...
That is super cool. Very well done 🙂
That's really cool.
Anybody know when will they check submissions?
Not sure when they will actually look at it, but in the rules they state they will have had the presentation on the winners on or about October 27'th
hello, quick question, I want to do some updates to my game (as result of player feedback). Would it be a problem for the judges?, as in will they know to play the original version? or should I do a new page entirely for that
Do not modify your page (or build) Itch.io its very bad web site
Its will be remove your build and say after that "you cant update your build"
Create new page its better
My team loose all and we dont know really why.... Be carefull
I thinks we going to be not rate of the MegaJam :/ We are very sad
Oh that is unfortunate, I will make a new page, thank you!
You can't upload new build to Itch now - it's locked til after the judging is done, tho I've seen some Teams add a download link to updated version in the description previous jams.
Wanted to share my Jam hack I figured out in the last minute - maybe can be of help for someone in the future.
We didn't have time to make a pretty aim cursor UI, so I added a sphere with a transp material & the 'Disable Depth Pass' checked to the player char. Then set that sphere to the hit location of the mouse (only tracing a custom channel on a plane attached to the character)
You said if we give a game before deadline, and a problem come 4 hours after the deadline, Epic games got a save of the build?
Dont think Epic got a save, I'd guess they haven't downloaded the games yet. I would guess they will download whatever is accessible on your itch page - check your Uploads page and see what's there. If its blank you might in trouble:<
Ah:'< don't think epic can do anything about that but maybe itch can help you out?
I speak with Itch support and say "You have to ask the host for help"
What time? And would you be down to stream play my game entry?
no real agenda, send me a link and I'll throw it on my list
I'll try to give you a heads up if/when I get to play it
Awesome! Where does the stream take place?
typically between 5am - 9am EST

What is a viable VR game package for a jam? i.e minimum systems. As a solo dev, I only have access to an Oculus Rift so clearly can only test on that. I can throw in input via dropdowns for others, but who knows if they will be ok. What have others' done who submitted for VR? What VR kit did you use?
Wait you still can add updated games?
You won't be able to upload to a submitted paged until after judging is done. After that, you can upload updates. Alternatively you can create a separate page and upload there in the meantime
i just threw a google docs link in the main one
I just use the VR template they made since its openXR.
Yeagh that's what though. I just saw people constantly updating. Thx for clarification 👍
What do you mean 'they made'? The Epic games standard VR/AR template?
probably talkin about the 4.27 template
its different than previous versions.. already optimized for quest and uses open XR
I can only test on Rift I guess is my point, so when I am making a game I only typically add Rift related controls(for my own benefit(never released a game into the public))
SO I am trying to understand how I am to make a game minimum standard for a public jam release
I think the jam page said it has to be oculus mobile.. IE quest
but the jam's over right?
Oh is that what that meant, I didn't even understand what that meant.
Yes it is, I entered, but as there were no Epic people around I didn't feel I could get quick responses around so didnt go VR path
gotchya
I don't understand why some Epic people didn't hang around in here.
Would have been good P.R.
Yeah I mean the template that comes with 4.27 and 5.03. It's got all the inputs hooked up and graphics setup for quest as a bare minimum. Its uses OpenXR so should work with rift. Well it does when I use my quest in "rift" mode.
But if you make it pretty graphically intensive it might not work on quest? Uncabled.
You can do PCVR I'm sure last years entry was
I guess in 1 week that won't happen
I mean the entry that won the VR award
Ok, cheers.
It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for—it’s time to announce the winners of the 2021 Epic MegaJam. While it hasn’t been easy selecting the finalists and modifier winners due to the sheer amount of talent and inspiration on display, it has been a privilege to play every one of your wonderful creations. Now, join us as we showcase the winning...
last years winner
around 38:43
Thanks.
Any info how long will it take to review games?
I think I saw Oct 27 as the reveal 😦
Given over 500 games, fair enough I guess
"a featured playthrough on the October 27th livestream"
Going from that anyway, unless they announce sometime before that
God damn lol
PCVR wasn't allowed this year for some reason
sad times

I assume there is no problem if we update our game page with description, devlogs etc.?
Nope - I would even encourage it!
Cool. Already updated with a devlog.
Do they post the scores anywhere or only announce the winners?
@calm urchin Only announce the winners
Figured.. would be useful for everyone else to know where they fell short, so they can improve those areas
So why didn't Epic have a presence in here? Or somewhere, public facing, during the Jam, or leading up to it?
Or where should I have been asking any questions, that needed an Epic answer?
Forums
I wouldn't expect to get official support from Epic here or anywhere else
a couple of community reps did duck in here during the jam though
seems like the whole event has been radio silence for the most part from Epic
Yeah, just seems like an opportunity missed to engage
I am trying to get my entry working in VR at the moment, for the hell of it. 🙂
@ivory dove have you discovered Modeling tools editor mode in PIE?
And the cube mode in that is cool.
Demo Space warriors
https://youtu.be/mYfvE1lRdeU
My first jam project Idea was 2D puzzle platform (split screen) , then I decided to challenge myself to switch to 3D RPG/RTS , but this what I got so far a demo 😵💫 .
check AWS console.
They didn't send me email too
1 year expiration date. I'M IN HEAVEN
nope, zero credits for me
i do pay them around 100$ a month, probably don't want to lose the business 🙂
Maybe it was something silly like needing to use an email address not already tied to an existing account
I had existing account created 3 years ago. To that account I got credits
Do you have multiplayer game?
no, i use it for other server side stuff, backend development mostly
nah, but i'd guess it's related to some credits i got in the past...
amazon don't like to give credits to accounts who received something in the past
Idk. It's my second time
For people who entered the Megajam, what are some things you learned from that you would do differently if you could do it over again?
Start cooking builds earlier even half way during the jam uploading it to Itchio to create your page and have a back-up build submitted even if it isn't done (and can easily replace later before the deadline).
I gotta be more insistent with my team members that this time we will totally have Small Scope for sure this time
I could have done more pre-prep and been more familiar with the ins-and-outs of the custom engine version I was using before the jam started - as it stands I only had a compiled version up and running on the same evening it started
discovering I basically couldn't do volumetrics or translucent particles mid-jam was unpleasant
other than that, I think I did okay-ish, could possibly have downscoped slightly to begin with as to have more time to work on stuff like UI, but something was always going to suffer on a solo jam, I think
looks like a lot of people flubbed their entries
throwing away the theme essentially
this one guys is funny it says 'as above so below' then its like 'space is both'
cheaters lol
i tried a couple to see what the fuss is about - but the games dont run lol
what was the AWS credit for i never did figure that out
@tough cypress
Promotional credits for Epic Megajam.
for multiplayer game
I wanted to use for matchmaking
multiplayer crowd how does that tie to epic/unreal?
like a API ?
is that how you have? to do multiplayer?
im still trying to pick up the 10-20 pieces needed for a game
got a lot of em figured out
i thought multiplayer was something that went through epic so i was like, huh?
should it tie to epic?
so if you use unreal engine for multiplayer you have to use AWS?
im reading a page about it now, since i found one
Amazon was one of the sponsors of the Megajam
ok im still confused but i guess i dont get it
It's just one option you can use out of many possibilities
You can win prizes if you use AWS in your game
Yeah I'm confused by this too. I was under the impression EOS was an all-in-one solution. Without it you'd probably use AWS ec2/rds to host game servers, leaderboard, saving player state, achievements, etc. But apparently AWS were promoting their GameKit and GameLift products specifically. I have my AWS solutions architect cert and still don't quite get where they fit in lol
thanks for the info man - pretty important subject so i appreciate it
Even with the limited time, the one thing I wish I did more was prototype different ideas early instead of “paper prototyping” since a proto helps identify core loop/scope/theme fit/etc.
how many of the 500 entries you think are legitimatelly english
or the converse of the question - i wonder how much was international entries
Same thing I say to myself after every jam, scope smaller. Then it never happens anyway:<
Build UI Early. Both jams I waited to the back end and always regretted it. While it seems straightforward, I always forget just how much time it actually takes to get everything hooked up and working
Yeah, I started out with a way too complicated idea and had to pivot on the last couple of days to make something out of what I had already.
Originally I planned on having puzzles that the player would have to solve, but that takes time to design each puzzle that I didn't have. Luckily my wife suggested that I could just use what I'd already built as a hidden object game and that let me finish in time.
I have this problem constantly, but this time forced myself to do a thing which works from begging to the end.
My trello is now dedicated to lessons learned, and how to improve for future jams. But my end goal is really to make games that can be finished and that don't have impossible scope. I've got a number of unfinished games, and use marketplace assets, and they'd been worked on in bursts for years. Mostly abandoned from either technical difficulty, unsolvable bugs, packaging issues, feature creep, and various other traps and issues. This was my second Jam, and my second submission. And despite having to restart at 2.5 days in.
And I made a really good effort pre jam to prepare and learn. All that effort was abandoned at 2.5 days lol. It crashed and burned. The menu system re- built again in my jam project suddenly exhibited a split screen like behaviour that wasn't exactly split screen like couldn't be resolved after hours of asking questions and trying to solve, and after other issues of crashing had also caused project restarts with my nano, and level streaming code, I simply abandoned everything including my idea. I even changed my theme idea, to the point I can't recall what my original idea was, and that took me a day to work out lol.
Couple things:
- as always cut the scope early. The best ideas may fail late in production. I have to tell though that I didn't have all 7 days for the jam this time and it felt easier to discard big chunks.
- it's hard to record the rhythm challenge (by hitting on your keyboard) at 3 AM in the morning without waking up your spouse.
That's why my rhythm challenge is a bit off 🙂
for anybody interested in playing:
https://itch.io/jam/2022-epic-megajam/rate/1684261
I think the quarantine is lifted already
If anyone here has VR and wants to give us some feedback, we'd greatly appreciate it! We built it for the game jam and used the VR Expansion plugin
https://plus2studios.itch.io/butterflies-and-beetles
Unfortunately, Vive controllers don't work in that build (we were so close to fixing them in time...) So if you have Vive controllers and want to play, I can give you a new build via google drive to play - game play wise, it's the same as the one on the itch page.
This is more of a programming tip but make modular tools for designers to build content before starting the more time intense systems.
Keeps the team effort from spiking at the end.
Ohhhh this is interesting, any examples?
I guess like a base class they can make blueprints off of and parameterize to make enemy/weapon variations?
Yeah for example I made a spline tool that allowed designers to make paths for characters to walk along. But I made the tool late and so it was not used to its full potential
Be efficient, have your work flow fast. Don't waste time on detail assets if you don't want to participate in that category. Backups backups backups.... keep project nice and clean, so won't have search for things all around the place. I usually skip on things in my head which tells me: ogh this thing would be cool to add :). I did my little thing all alone from models, rigging, sounds. Have a little plan and decide how much time you can give to each thing. I splitted 50/50=assets/code. I am solo so idk what os good for team things... but basically start and finish one thing (part of code/asset etc..) don't just stop in the middle and start other thing. But I can't stress too much Backups,Pipeline (workflow), no necessary stuff until core elements done.
source control during a jam is so useful
even if you're solo
I used the free assembla repo this year going it solo and honestly it was really great to have
saved me a lot of time once or twice when it was a lot quicker to revert things than undo my screwups etc
true enough, but if it's hosted externally it's safer as a backup and you don't have to faff with setting up a local repo
assembla is just one click
Went out of my way to learn how to set up source control w/ GitHub this year, since I just recklessly ignored it last year and regretted it. Absolutely saved me a couple times during the jam
Any info on when they announce winners etc? I guess in a few weeks?
around 26th Oct I believe. Could be earlier or later tho, "in or around" was the term used in the rules
Stream on the 27th, I believe
any had a pleasure of checking out other submissions? 🙂
found any hidden gems by chance?
"They came from above" was pretty fun
finally got my file fixed and is ready to download! (butler on itch was confusing to navigate) https://itch.io/jam/2022-epic-megajam/rate/1688974 Any feedback would be amazing!
i rlly liked they came from above
Steep learning curve but I liked Graviboule
Does anyone know if I can post a link here to an Unreal game jam I'm hosting? I didn't want to spam or self-promote, but someone told me I should post it here so I wanted to check if it's OK first
@brazen surge plenty doing it already, what's one more 😄
lol OK if it's a problem I can delete it's just a game jam after all 🙂 I started this jam as an alternative to the yearly Megajam, something that is lower stakes so more beginner friendly (no prizes) and more frequent (hoping to host regularly). It's an alternative to other jams which tend to be more dominated by Unity teams with WebGL builds. And it starts... tomorrow! https://itch.io/jam/unreal-engine-funjam-1
well, if we're posting jams we're hosting, I'll put a link to this month's jam as well:
https://itch.io/jam/ue5-free-assets-monthly-challenge-september-2022
but I really came here to ask if anyone knows anyone who streamed themselves playing the megajam games?
Only themselves? Or any of the the entries?
last year I watched a couple streams of people playing through all of them
So anyone, not themselves
yes, I will find the link
@ivory dove is the guy that did a twitch stream
And he posted links in here
Game Dev / Programmer / Tech Artist - making the video games, mostly with Unreal Engine
Search his broadcasts should be a 5 hr stream of megajam
Thanks!
How do people join game jams?
Usually, just find one you're interested in and get involved. If it's hosted on itch, you can just click the join button on the jam and submit any public or restricted itch project while the submission window is open.
The exact rules and process will vary depending on what you join.
The Jam page mentions a discord but no link I could find. Is there a dedicated server or are we just jamming in here? 🙂
@atomic helm Are you having trouble with one Jam in particular?
If you look at this page, https://itch.io/jams in the jams starting, running beyond today: then you should find there is an active join jam link.
Do I need to develop the game in the mobile environment from the start or can I develop for desktop and package for mobile later? Unreal engine 4
You click the Discord button to join, I'll make that clear in the description thanks. Let me know if you still have issues joining
When are they announcing the winner of the mega jam?
Probably not till mid october. They've got hundreds of games they've gotta play through lol

are we allowed to update our game?
there's some improvements I want to make but I don't want to invalidate my entry
You can't modify the actual download file until the jam is over
ah fair enough, I guess that's until Oct 27th then
You can also do as I'm doing; build a touched up version with eliminated bugs etc ready to go for when the 27th rolls around
kind of late to the party, but you can use AWS to setup a 30gb perforce server for free. I just followed this video https://youtu.be/7eVO0qXC3nk

There was a category in the jam called "Use it or Lose It " which required the use of only a single, 4 channel texture map.
Yesterday I watched a GDC talk from the developers of 'The Ascent'. They used a single texture for the whole game & I found it very interesting how they were able to maximize the use from it. Check this out if you're interested.

pick up games in jam chat? why?
I feel like it's spam or a bot or someone who doesn't know where they are or what they're doing.
feels like a bot to me
either way it's not even relevant to this server
it doesn't go anywhere here, that channel is for dev streams
As promised here we are with the full devlog for our epic mega jam 2022, enjoy.
https://arcils.com/Article?Id=27
some high res images in there might take a while to load everything up
i was so busy i forgot to keep record of what I made when, and theres no way im going to be able to get out a devlog, but urs is impressive
Thank you. we had it planned out and screen recorded almost all of our work so we can sit back and do a devlog when we had time properly
anyone know how I can change the font size of an input box in a UMG widget in runtime?
Probably have better luck here #umg
nope
Here's a good site for UMG if you haven't seen it, could find info 🤞 https://benui.ca/
no, wasnt able to find anything
I'm going to work on a proper jam postmortem / post-jam devlog for Astrolabe in the next week or so. I just put together a Bandcamp where people can listen to my soundtracks from these past two Megajams, for anybody who might be interested
What's the best way to upload a packaged game to Itch? I tried installing Butler from the Itch.io app, but it doesn't open when I click "Launch"
Oh duh it's a CLI app, this just installs it you still have to run it from command line
I had to add butler to my PATH
For anyone confused on uploading a game jam to Itch with Butler, I wrote up a mini-guide (can also find it on the Funjam site with all the links)
@brazen surge There's also an app on itch called GUI butler which highly simplifies the process for people like me who hate messing with command line stuff. It's pretty nifty
Hey folks, I've been working on my gamejam game (Jump down, fall up, check it out, super cool) and I would like to upload an update because it has a dumb bug when resetting the level, but as I understand you can't upload anything until the jam results are up, but could I upload a devlog entry and a dropbox link with the updated version in the meantime?would that disqualify me?
That would be fine. You can add links to devlog, comments, or even in the page description. The only part that's locked is the upload
Oh,that’s super cool then, thank you! I’ve been getting some views and that dumb bug it’s been damaging the experience for some people

sorry i though this was a gaming channel kinda thing sorry
impressive stuff boys. i will do brake down as forum post some time later. was an a adventure for me to make game ;D
We just finished a game jam, really happy with how it came out for 10 days work https://scriptorious.itch.io/swerve
@visual yew its beautiful
I recently started game development, I want to participate in a hackathons to learn more. But there are none in my city, can anyone recommend online game dev hackathon sites?
@rose gyro can you also share sites where you can get free assets? I am terrible at creating them by myself.
For unity?

Hey any 3D or 2D modelers/artist around here who wanna join myself and another in this upcoming jam? We are currently planning to make the game in unreal. ^^
So when's the announcement of the MegaJam2022 winners?
Do not play it: https://andrewrain.itch.io/silenttalecozyautumn
this is actually really fun to play and looks great, the audio is kinda driving me mad though, it is very loud and hard to make out the music with all the noise
Thanks for playing! Our sound guy might be cleaning it up this weekend and we'll release an update after the jam's voting period ends
Sounds good, no put intended
Oct 27 is a livestream of the announcement
Wait so the megajam results are not in yet?
27 oct, found it hidden on the itch jam page
Long time
Yep, They're got a LOT of games to play through lol
I think our team forgot to remove the spheres we used to test lighting🥲
As long as it was in keeping with the theme, like something ito astrology/hermetics , youll be fine.
Anyone notice their game jam game get downloaded recently, so it can be judged yet? lol. Not mine. A month to go still!
oddly enough, mine has not been downloaded either
They still have another month to play them all. Pry only half done
aye, plenty of time
I kinda assumed they'd probably subdivide it all and batch download, but apparently not
My game has been downloaded 40 times so far.
Just submitted for a 4 day game jam! I feel like that's about the minimum to make a playable and fun game in Unreal. First time on a small team (4 people) and as the only programmer. Custom rigging/animation, Wwise troubleshooting, and a bad git merge took up a lot of time as usual but it went pretty smooth overall. We aggressively cut scope and it left us time to relax at the end and focus on bug fixes, balance, polish, and controls https://scriptorious.itch.io/gene-breaker
@brazen surge well done. After working with git, begrudgingly, later in my IT (non gaming) career, and having git gurus around me, I was able to always consult them when things went horribly wrong, and they did go wrong. Now retired, I won't touch git, as a solo doing hobbyist game dev. I just frequently back up the entire folder, which works fine. It does, however, stop me wanting to join a team, as I imagine all teams want to use source control. Git scares me at what can go wrong, and with nobody around to help fix it. I've seen the mess first hand.
You can do a weekend (Friday evening through Sunday evening) and still get results in Unreal, but scope has to be tight and there's not much wiggle room for mucking about or mistakes
Ah! Bad that you had such an experience with git. It is pretty cool once you get the hang of it. It is just that version control is hard with binary file formats when there are merges and conflicts involved - which is essentially any team of more than 1 person.
better to set up version control to lock files so that you don't get merges / conflicts involving binary files at all tbh
That or be super strict about who touches what, when, and make sure everything is pushed atleast once a day (ideally more)
Perforce is great for teams, but soooo annoying
git checkout -b adding-character-movement
git add .
git commit -am "Adding character movement"
The above creates a new branch and then adds all new files to it, and makes a commit
git reset --hard HEAD reset all your file changes
git clean -f remove new files you added
The above two will get you to a clean state, you can verify with git status. Sometimes there will still be a new folder, just manually delete it
git checkout adding-character-movement
git merge master
The above will merge master into adding-character-movement. Then when merge conflicts show up, you can pick which version of the file you want like so
git checkout master file/with/conflicts.uasset
git checkout adding-character-movement file/with/conflicts.uasset
The above will pick which version of the file "wins" in the merge from one branch or another. You can also put in a commit hash instead of main or adding-character-movement to pick a file from any specific commit. Then when you're done, commit the merge, and switch back to master and merge your branch back in like so
git add .
git commit -am "Merge main into adding-character-movement"
git checkout master
git merge adding-character-movement
Those commands will get you through 95% of problem cases
Also a good idea to check what you're about to commit before doing so with git status and discard any changes unrelated to what you were doing, like if you saved a map file you didn't actually do anything with. You can also right click and pick "Discard" on the files from Github Desktop, or just uncheck them before making a commit. That goes a long way toward avoiding merge conflicts.
I'd rather use a system that simply doesn't allow merge conflicts to exist, tbh
'cos you know, the best way to solve a problem is not to have it all
For some reason, one game jam insisted use of source control, and a daily commit. What the heck? Suffice to say I wasn't going to join that jam.
seems like a way to verify that your work is genuine, I guess
makes sense if there are prizes involved
I commited several times a day during megajam, so one commit a day would be trivial
trivial if you use it. Horrendous if you don't
nothing like blowing up your project so badly it'll take hours to undo your latest changes... or you can use version control and hit the magic undo button
I backup regularly without source control. I've seen source control do worse damage than not having source control.
git is one of the worst things to ever happen to programming
unfortunately, I use it daily, even for personal/one-shot projects 😕
anyone know why the number of megajam entries has gone up from 525 when it ended to 526 for a while and now 527 today?
We allowed late submissions at the time to be added to the Jam page, though none of those added late submissions are eligible for prizing. There was an entrant that reached out on Twitter after the Jam that had only just been added as a late submission.
If you're interested, here was the initial post regarding this 🙂
cool, thanks for the quick response, I hadn't seen that post
Anyone else gonna be participating in the current Unreal Challenge? Wasn't sure if there was a channel for it, though I suppose it's kinda jam-adjacent 🙂
https://forums.unrealengine.com/t/unreal-challenge-creep-it-real/650286
INTRODUCING OUR SECOND, ALL-NEW UNREAL ENGINE COMMUNITY CHALLENGE! In May we hosted our first-ever Unreal Challenge, and the community did not disappoint! We saw over 450 fantastic entries to Unreal Challenge: Better Light Than Never. Each challenge will focus on a specific skillset or feature within Unreal Engine and general development. ...
I've considered it, but I'm not a fan of these more art orientated challenges and I still want to finish up a post-jam version of the jam game
We will be hosting more in the future that also focus on other things, such as; animation, VFX, specific mechanics, and other areas of development. The first few will be broad to gauge interest. Our overall aim is to use these challenges as a way to engage the community in all aspects of development to provide other learning opportunities that they can also then later use the knowledge gained for the MegaJam 🙂
I'm going to try, especially because it fits into my monthly challenge series
me 😈
The epic megajam is over, but I finally got my sort-of game in a condition I'm proud to present. And, I bet I'm too late to be added to the list of jam games, but hopefully it interests somebody: https://dishbutt.itch.io/ant-ai-sim. The "as above so below" factor was going to be that it included an anthill.
Maybe @worn hamlet can help get you onto the Epic MegaJam sizzle reel?
!stream
Any gamejam people willing to help me with a melee question? My lock on system is automatic, similar to Ninja Gaiden but my character keeps selecting different enemies with the slightest movement. Is there a way to give my current target more "weight" than the others?
Could you just store a reference to your current target and use that whenever it's set, otherwise fall back to default behavior?
Or if you are calculating weights based on something like distance, add a modifier like +100 if that enemy was also your current (last) target
Then have a struct like WeightedTarget with a weight and target property, and sort by weight then pull the first item out and grab its target
So there isn't a "known best solution" for this?
Another way is to add a enum like lockType with values (soft / hard) and any target locked would go from soft to hard if your player hit it or is locking it for a certain duration.
or dont run it on tick
Just saw this jam which is for Unreal! https://itch.io/jam/senscapejam2022
Ooh! Glad you showed me this or I would've missed it.
Happy October!
I'd like to invite people to join my game jam **🎃 SPOOKY 2D JAM 2022 🎃 ** a 48-hour game jam open to developers of all skill levels/ages, happening next weekend (October 21st-23rd)! very few people who use unreal do 2d i believe
thats more of a unity or godot thing
Yeah there's momentum growing around Paper2D though like this channel https://www.youtube.com/c/CobraCode/videos some people are even doing pixel perfect
Here to share my knowledge about game development I acquired over the years making indie games and also working as a professional game programmer.
Most videos revolve around unreal engine, however I might branch out and talk about other engines or more general game development concepts as well.
Live a Live is a recent 2.5D commercial Unreal game on Switch
unreal might not be aimed at 2d.. but the tool set is huge
so if u want 2d multiplayer... unreal might still be better
or if you used unreal for years .. you dont swich to unity to make a 2d game if you never used it
also blueprint is more artist friendly
Does unity have it's own thing like blueprints? But that is true I haven't rlly heard of anyone switching from unreal to unity, but there's a ton going from unity to unreal
it does not, not officially - you'd likely be doing the scripting work in C#
There was something newish in 2D that was hailed a 'gamechanger', 3rd party asset I think. Name escapes me. Might have been the Pixel 2D Platformer Engine which got an Epic Mega Grant.
Maybe you are thinking of PaperZD? Anim system with notifies, it's free and Epic recently did a vid on it https://www.unrealengine.com/marketplace/en-US/product/paperzd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g34Qhv8M3lU
This week we will be taking an in depth look at the PaperZD plugin, an incredible MegaGrant Recipient project! We'll be chatting with Critical Failure Studio's Co-Founder Carlos Ibanez about how the plugin packs a major punch against typical 2D pain points in the engine, and how its creation came about while dealing with the challenges of develo...
